PrvaLiga Telekom Slovenije. We won 5 of our last 6 games, but the 1 game we lost, (against Mura), was the game that cost us as we lost the title on.....

..... well actually I'm not really sure what we lost the title on. We had the best goal difference and we scored the most goals so..... what did we lose the title on?

We lost the title on Head to Head basis against Mura, on goal difference. How tight is that? Gutted. :(

Hervis Pokal. What usually happens is that as soon as I take a picture of a new unbeaten/winning record, we immediately lose the next game so I fully expect to lose the 2nd leg against Mura. Not only did we win, (this was reverse psychology against the FM Gods), but we then went and won the Final. The record is up to 19 games now by the way.

Finances. We might have spent £7.15M on facilities, but it's an investment in the future and we still have f712686effbb7e7b929d2569ed103bea.png in the bank that I'm struggling to spend on players never mind the transfer budget of b5a3b9e4777d8b9a8097db943e3b4dd7.png

New contract. DC Koper, Slovenia. May 2042.

I was hoping for a longer contract if I'm honest. I've taken them from the 2nd tier, won the Cup 3 years running and only lost the top tier title on Head to Head goal difference this season.

This is what it is now. Mura have leap-frogged Maribor as the top ranked team by reputation in Slovenia.

5,911 Mura (+129) Won the league, got to the Semi's in the Cup and got to the Euro Conference Group stage
5,889 Maribor (-79) Finished 3rd in the league, Runners Up in the Cup and got to the 3rd Qualifying Round of the Euro Conference
5,602 FC Koper (+160) Runners Up in the league, Cup winners and got to the 4th Qualifying Round of the Euro Conference

I wonder what sort of jump we would get if we won the league, won the Cup and got to the Group stages of the Euro Conference?

PrvaLiga Telekom Slovenije. We always seem to get off to a slow start and I think it's because the players are either undercooked in terms of fitness, or overcooked in terms of fatigue from trying to get their fitness levels up. Whichever way it is, I always seem to get it wrong.

Slovenia National Team production. Sep 2042

I often use this as a gauge as to how we're developing, but it seems particularly slow going at the moment. Although we have produces 3 players who are currently in the Senior National squad, none of them came through during my tenure.

I sold (32) Anej Čeh (SVN) *, (although he was already at the club when I joined). I don't remember selling him, but £3.8M would have been enormous back at that stage of the save. He's currently valued at £13.25M and we still have a nice little clause on him. If he was sold today for £13.25M we would get £2.8M

Happy Schalkwyk (SAF) is the 2nd South African that I had signed before I remembered that I was restricting myself to Balkans only. I'm gutted because I really like him.

The agent who proposed this Happy to you probably has many other South African players in his portfolio. It's very likely that you have a good relationship. Annoy him with something and ... he won't give you "his" players anymore.

PrvaLiga Telekom Slovenije. We're the form team in the league at the moment and are up to 2nd, just 1 points behind Mura. Maribor's form has dropped off a cliff and they have lost 4 of their last 5 games in the league and have actually lost 7 of their last 11 in all competitions. If anything, I'm a little peeved that we didn't beat Celje and si

You could be right actually.

Actually, you are definitely right. The 2 South Africans I have are both managed by the same agent, "Stanton Biyela" and he looks after 303 clients.

Yep, I've just looked and all the South Africans on my scouting screen are his clients. Both players have been demoted to the U19's so that the Ass Man doesn't pick them when I ask him to auto-pick the squad, (and 1 has gone out on loan). They both look really good so I am going to be upsetting them some more before too long.

PrvaLiga Telekom Slovenije. We should have battered Bravo, (but didn't), and then Maribor hit us on the counter not once but 3 times in a game we should have won but somehow lost 4-1 at home. :( We bounced back with a good 1-0 win against Mura the following week and should have scored about 10 against Triglav. We are honestly going to absolutely spank someone one of these days.

Europe. We beat Monaco home and away, but only managed a single point from 2 games against KF Tirana. It's a funny old game. :idiot: Our last game is home against Ferencvárosi and you would expect us to win with ease based on the other results so far. It would be astonishing if Monaco fail to progress from this group.

PrvaLiga Telekom Slovenije. An unbeaten month in the league has propelled us past Mura, (we're 6 points ahead of them now), but Maribor have won 4/4 this month and edged 1 point ahead of us at the top of the table.

January Transfer window. FC Koper, Slovenia. Feb 2043.

I set myself a maximum limit of £1M for player purchases, but went over it for 1 deal that I deemed important. We spent £3.1M on players ahead of the window opening, and we still have an available transfer budget of £9M to spend, but we have to balance the books and I can't afford to spend the whole budget because we only have a9c2c092f839ce48ff43bbf4b8f4a2ed.png in the bank and I always try to keep a healthy bank balance to stop El Presidente getting involved in bids for our players.

ab5d465e5d010b172626c3a0c5f8f502.png

Jaka (SVN) * has already been at the club on loan for the last 2 seasons, but we have paid £1.1M to make the deal permanent. He's still got 5.0 PA after signing.

0b5e2c35862288b31788c9f716f9cb4b.png

14e51a3313e6844446d73bfb998afcfb.png

Datko (SVK) was signed with 5.0 PA but it has dropped to 4.0 PA after arrival. £200k seemed like a bargain at the time and it possibly makes more sense that his PA isn't quite 5.0

2d6d6072f2f56d33d246a46b1f93ceac.png

e5675655ca3f25a483886a9a5b088ed7.png

Bekim Skenderi (ALB) appears to be a bargain at £400k because he has 5.0 PA after arriving.

c0a0be83b146aaf7cd2003a9a4527548.png

ec458ad5d7843ecc74424aeecefd7b5d.png

Tihomir Holender (SRB) has been signed as a DLP, but he needs to develop some to make the grade. £500k is a decent deal, but he was signed as a 5.0 PA player and it's dropped to 4.0 after signing.

3389e76cb7f834ce5271b9e99a44b642.png

Sanel Malićević was signed largely on the back of a 5.0 scout rating and his physical attributes. We had to pay £850k to get him and his PA has dropped from 5.0 to 4.5 after arriving, but I'm still hopeful that he will be a decent long-term investment. We've lost our best striker in each of the last 3 windows and the only reason we won't lose our best striker in this window is because we're already lost him and then got him back in on loan again.

PrvaLiga Telekom Slovenije. The win against Maribor was big. Not just because it sends us top now, but because we know from last season how important the games against Maribor and Mura might be come the end of the season.

Been a long time (for me), but good to see you focusing on the youth! That last intake is brilliant. Any tips on youth development in the most recent versions?

Thanks very much.

I'm afraid there just isn't a short answer to your question about Youth Development and I'm afraid I don't have the time to respond fully at the moment. My 1st main save in FM22 will be a Youth Only save and I will try and use the editor to have a look under the hood at what works, how and why.

All good! Wasn't picturing a  youth development tutorial so much as any quirks you'd noticed from your recent experiences. I'll figure out some of the intricacies soon enough with my own youth only game. Even more moving pieces to figure out when the last version I played consistently was FM15 and that obviously was before the introduction of mentoring and different progression curves.

I wouldn't expect anyone to remember this (since it's been literally half a decade), but I fondly recall sharing experiences on the topic and IR back in my Avenir Beggen game in Luxembourg and you were doing youth only in Iceland (I think). I keep an eye out for some of the posters I recognize from that time since that was one of the better experiences I've had playing FM!

Yeah, I'm the same and I definitely remember the Avenir Beggen save now that you have mentioned it.

The problem with my responses sometimes is that what starts out as a quick response, ends up as a Tolstoy tribute piece. I don't know when to stop. I actually did start responding, but after about 10 mins and my 3rd tangent I realised I had barely scratched the surface so just gave up.

Biggest tips?

1. Youth Recruitment and Junior Coaching are cheap so at a small club with limited finances concentrate on them 1st ahead of Youth Facilities and Training Facilities.

2. Sign all players to Youth contracts on intake day. Even good Coaches/Ass Men/DoF with good attributes often get their star ratings hugely wrong at the outset.

3. If you have a youngster who you think is going to be good, pay him more at the outset to sign him to a +3 contract. (Big signing bonus rather than cash and don't be afraid to "bung" the agent too).

4. If you have someone who you think is going to be good, play them in the 1st team before their time to aid development. At the same time you can focus their training how you like and sort PPM's out early. Loaning players out early can be risky.

5. Don't be afraid to play a player in a different position to that which he is natural in.

6. Biggest tip? Play them. Play them, play them, play them.

PrvaLiga Telekom Slovenije. We went into the last game of the season, (against Mura), knowing that a win would see us crowned champions. At 90 mins we were leading 2-1 and it wasn't until the 96th min that they scored the equaliser. :( After losing last season on head to head basis, we have lost this season to a goal in the 6th min of injury time of the last game of the season. Beyond gutted. :seagull: Brilliant title race though. :applause:If I have to pick out 1 game that cost us the title, it's the 0-0 draw with Triglav where we dropped 2 points. We've played 15 games in these last 2 months of the season and we just didn't have the legs to finish it off.

d0a13a4e7c96b1e142bad28b761d2b00.png

On the one hand we should have won the game, but on the other hand we were lucky to even make it to extra-time. We're just too inexperienced and too lacking in depth at this moment. This will be great experience though. Because we bottled the league title, it also means that we get another go at this competition next season.

Hervis Pokal. After not winning much at all for most of this save, we've now won the Slovenian domestic Cup for 4 successive years. :applause:

Squad by appearances. 56(1) appearances for an outfield player is ridiculous in my opinion, but actually only 32(1) of them came in the league.

Squad by CA. It's significant that *** Kodermac (SVN) is out best player (by CA), by a whole 1.0- margin. As a result of this when he leaves I would expect many of our players to get a PA boost when he leaves, (because the level against which they are being judged will be lower).

Rankings. Jun 2043

European Competition rankings. Our reputation is rising slowly, but we're still behind our neighbours Slovakia.

908add10a13fb61d4a12e1550b6f6075.png

European Nation coefficients. We get an extra European place, but this isn't for this year it's for next year, (which is typical because I expect us to win the league this season and then the 2nd placed team will still get into the Champions League next season where as we have finished Runners up now for 3 seasons running and only played in the Europa Conference each time. The 3rs placed team also goes into the Europa League rather than the Europa Conference.

That being said, it's not all down to us because at least Mura have also had a good season in Europe.

9a2b263ecd06379a329ba9300bcf0150.png

We're ranked 14th and our ranking points for last season were 15.875 which is actually the 4th best of any Nation. It's better than Spain, better than France, better than Portugal and better than Holland.

European Club rankings. Our ranking points in recent seasons have been 8.00, 0.00, 3.00 2.50 and last season we earned 21.00 points.

FC Koper, Slovenia. Squad Depth. Jul 2043

Something I'm keen to do this season is try and keep partnerships together. So if I drop 1 centre-half, (for whatever reason), then I also drop the guy he usually plays with. If I drop a left back, then I also drop the player who usually plays in front of him and so on and so forth.

GK. This is the 1st time since I've been here that we've had 2 decent GK's.

1st choice. Žiga (SVN)
2nd Choice. Andrei Irimescu (ROU)

46ff3846c2038265dce5e391e11ffb8c.png

DL.

1st choice. (43a) Jon Pečnik  (SVN)
2nd choice. (39a) Cemalovic (SVN) (BIH) *

6d6ba6e9f33527ee2d4b27166f5e2475.png

DR.

1st choice.  (40b) Fink (SVN) *
2nd choice. Urbanč (SVN) *

85c73e6915ca77712b5325361f0452ae.png

DC. This is particularly where I want players to play in partnerships where possible and it's the 1st time where I think I have the personnel to do so. You will notice that the players have a (1) or a (2) after their name to indicate which pairing they are part of. It doesn't mean that they will never play with someone else, but they just won't normally. If for example I get a serious injury to a (1) and a (2) then they will be forced together.

1st choice.  (40d) Ljubec (SVN) 6'6" (1)* & Stojanović (SVN) 5'10" (1).
2nd choice. (40a) Sojer (SVN) 6'0" (2)* & Datko (SVK) 6'0" (2).

51c904912f8eb70236b5b60d43e92eb5.png

MC. This is another area where partnerships are key and possibly even more important than the centre-half pairing because of the difference in midfield roles.

1st choice. Galešić (SRB) (1) &  (31) Ribič (SVN) 5'9" (1)*.
2nd choice. Magdič (SVN) (2) & (38b) Kovač (SVN) (2)*.

fedd147f5dba176b7f7d04c73b7ab356.png

ML & MR. These players don't need to have a relationship with eachother, (because they are on opposite flanks), but they do have a relationship with the full-backs behind them. We're a little weak in the right-sided left winger position so if I stumble across one of them I would definitely make a signing.

1st choice.  Erion Lleshi (MKD) (1) &  Jaka (SVN) (1)
2nd choice. (40c) Leskovar (SVN) (2)* & (34) Denis Šabec (SVN) (2)*.

7d014d07cd8bdec01706ff506bd6abe2.png

SC. These players link with eachother, but they should also link with wide/central players too. (I hope this area is improved in FM22). We're far stronger up front than we have ever been before. We possibly need another DLP, but in terms of actual finishers we have loads.

1st choice. *** Kodermac (SVN) (1) & (40e) Spudić (SVN) (1)*.
2nd choice. Kozar (SVN) (2)* &  Krajnc (SVN) 6'4" (2).

1c6f2a817185a01082dda85dbea4ef38.png

While I've been a fan of "rotating partnerships" like this for a while, it was something that I really took to the next level while managing Barca, (simply because they had the players available to do so). What I'm thinking now is that rather than muck about swapping this player in and that player out, I will select 2 completely separate Team selections.

Yeah, part of me thinks I should have prioritised the league, but a European Final is not to be trifled with.

"Tolstoy tribute piece"  , completely understand. I remember you harping on #2 way back when and you eventually wore me down. Any evidence I've seen since supports your point though, including some basic data @deez0r captured in his Benidorm thread here. The PPA you see is nearly always misordered and feels like it's often off by a star+. The rest are good reminders, but familiar outside of #1. I hadn't realized that those upgrades are far cheaper. Definitely worth prioritizing those first then!

Transfers In

Galešić (SRB) (1) was signed as 1st choice DLP, and while he's not exactly what I was looking for, he's certainly decent and will improve us.

Mancevski (MKD) was signed to add more depth up front in the expectation that we would be losing loanee *** Kodermac (SVN) (1) back to Man Utd and we would be unlikely to get him in again. In fact we did get him in again so Mancevski (MKD)'s opportunities have been limited so far.

Kozar (SVN) (2)* came in as 1st choice AF, but has been knocked down to 2nd choice with us getting *** Kodermac (SVN) (1) in on loan again.

*** Kodermac (SVN) (1) coming back in on loan was a major coup and after 40 goals in 51(1) appearances last season and I stupidly almost didn't even try. Because he's at Man Utd we might even be able to get him in again next season because although he's brilliant for us, he's a little short of the level required for Man Utd

Side note: have you ever taken a keen eye to training performances and the correlation with player development as a means to evaluate player potential beyond your staff's PPA? It's something I'm trying in my Andorra save for the first time and I'm wondering if I'm on to something (or trying to read the tea leaves in a grande latte at Starbucks). If not, I won't clog up your thread with that discussion but I've found it interesting.

More decidedly on topic - how have you found the performance of someone like Kodermac (Unambitious, low-ish Determination) versus better personality types like Mancevski? Noticed any differences on the pitch?

FC Koper, Slovenia. Aug 2043

PrvaLiga Telekom Slovenije. I was hoping for a long unbeaten period in the league, but Celje put paid to that. We're still in a better position than we have ever been before though so I'm not too upset. We were by far the better side but actually Celje had a penalty, (that we saved), and their goal was scored by our ex player Jerbić (CRO), who was a threat all game.

Transfers. I was tempted to accept this and just get him back in on loan, but he's under contract until 2047, (so 4 more years), so there is no rush to sell him and we don't need the money.

Because we're coming to the end of the FM22 cycle I'm not getting too engrossed in anything. I'm really just going with the flow.

*** Kodermac (SVN) (1) is very good at this level, (probably too good for us), and we were lucky that he has been bought by a club like Man Utd where he's not good enough to start for. He scored 40 goals in all competitions last season and 6 goals in 8 appearances this season.

Mancevski (MKD) is on the fringes at the moment so not really getting a chance so it's pretty hard to compare them. He's scored 2 goals in 1(5) appearances.

I didn't respond to this immediately because it warranted an in depth response, but there is something that has been nagging at me so I have come back to it.

SI would have you believe that Det, Pro, Amb &.... something else I think, all impact equally on player development. I don't agree with this. I don't believe that Amb, (and whatever the other thing is), have the same impact as Det and Pro at all. Again, this isn't something I know. This is something I think. I should reiterate that SI are adamant that these 3 things impact player development equally.

I personally believe that Det, Pro and game-time are the 3 significant drivers in Youth development.

When I look at the messages I get telling me who has performed well/poorly in training this month, (senior squad and U19 squad), then these are their personalities.

Best.

Spirited Pro 17 Det 14 Amb 12.
F.Det Pro 8 Det 15 Amb 8.
F.Pro Pro 17 Det 12 Amb 13

F.Pro Pro 16 Det 14 Amb 12
Spirited Pro 11 Det 11 Amb 9
Bal Pro 13 Det 12 Amb 14

Worst

Res Pro 15 Det 16 Amb 14
Bal Pro 12 Det 6 Amb 7
Unamb Pro 11 Det 10 Amb 2

The problem with looking at training performances separate to Youth Development is that it's often driven by outside influences, (such as morale and happiness). If we look at the Res player who performed the worst in training this month then he has a great personality, (Res), and good attributes, but performed poorly in training because he has the hump with me. He wanted to go out on loan and I agreed, but then I forgot to offer him out for loan and nobody came in for him and he only spoke to me about it after the window had closed. He's also not been playing much, (separate issue), because he's not 1st or 2nd choice centre-half and that's also causing him a problem. So despite the fact that he has a good personality, he's not performing well in training due to outside influences. Add in that he's not playing and I think we can agree it's reasonable to expect that his development would have stagnated a little.

94670814bd979048e00d532f4793d667.png

Do I use the above as 1 of the tools to judge PA? No.

I use it as a tool to see how/if they are developing.

1st comes the PA and we can't influence that so there isn't really much point worrying about it or giving it too much thought.
2nd comes the development and that's all about giving the players that we think have the highest PA, the best opportunity to do so.

The 2 are completely separate.

You can only successfully develop so many players at a time in any 1 position, (because only a certain number of players can be given enough game time), so the rest will ideally either still be in the U19 squad or will be loaned out. (If we had a Reserve Squad or a B Team then that could be another option but we don't). In this instance, the Resolute player isn't playing but is in the Senior squad and hasn't been loaned out so I have failed his development this half season, (I count development in half seasons because of the 2 transfer windows).

That's just training though and we know that development is more than training.

Development is a bi-product of other things, (one of which is training), so we need to think of them as linked, but not in the way your question suggests. I hope that makes sense.
