Domoboy23
Hello, Please can someone explain how this headline makes sense? As seen as six of the best is traditionally a beating. Surely is Club A beats Club B 6-0, the headline should read ''Six of the best for CLUB B'' rather than CLUB A? The only reason for this is to settle a debate. For me it makes perfect sense using the reasoning - If I were a teacher and were in the staff room I would say I gave ''six of the best'' to student A today. It's me giving it. Therefore its six of the best FOR me. They can't see this at all however Edited May 14, 2021 by Domoboy23
XaW
It might be lost in translation somehow, but I read it as "Team A scored 6". I guess it's based on Team A besting Team B, where "besting" means overcoming or "getting the better of" someone. English is not my mother tongue, but I still think it's correct as it is. FrazT
The phrase would indicate a large winning score, so if club A had won the game 6-0, the the headline is correct

So six of the best for Club A would suggest the score was against Club A? So if Club A wins 6-0 against B. Then the headline should read ''Six of the best for Club B'' - Not A Edited May 14, 2021 by Domoboy23

Six of the best is an idiom used to describe being struck/beaten. Therefore to say 'six of the best' and then 'for' indicates the team it is 'for' was given six of the best. Doesn't really work and it's just a lazy tabloid headline. IMO. Not that it really matters of course. Edited May 14, 2021 by cpfcrebel
FrazT
Looking into this further it looks like that phrase can be interpreted in both ways- negatively it can refer to physical punishment but there are instances of it being used positively. It is used in the game predominately as a positive statement implying a number of good goals, so perhaps it can be looked at both ways. As you say, however, not a lot to get too concerned about
Hovis Dexter
Ha Ha ... pure coincidence. I read this thread and won my very next game 6 -1 resulting in the six of the best headline
