Six of the best for CLUB A

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Please can someone explain how this headline makes sense?  As seen as six of the best is traditionally a beating. Surely is Club A beats Club B 6-0, the headline should read ''Six of the best for CLUB B'' rather than CLUB A?

The only reason for this is to settle a debate. For me it makes perfect sense using the reasoning - If I were a teacher and were in the staff room I would say I gave ''six of the best'' to student A today. It's me giving it. Therefore its six of the best FOR me.

They can't see this at all however :D

It might be lost in translation somehow, but I read it as "Team A scored 6". I guess it's based on Team A besting Team B, where "besting" means overcoming or "getting the better of" someone. English is not my mother tongue, but I still think it's correct as it is.

I get that, but surely as the meaning of the phrase is to receive a big beating, then it is FOR the club who lost? So six of the best for Club A would suggest the score was against Club A? :D

So if Club A wins 6-0 against B. Then the headline should read ''Six of the best for Club B'' - Not A

I would argue it doesn't indicate that at all. Six of the best is an idiom used to describe being struck/beaten. Therefore to say 'six of the best' and then 'for' indicates the team it is 'for' was given six of the best. Doesn't really work and it's just a lazy tabloid headline. IMO.

Not that it really matters of course. :D

Looking into this further it looks like that phrase can be interpreted in both ways- negatively it can refer to physical punishment but there are instances of it being used positively.  It is used in the game predominately as a positive statement implying a number of good goals, so perhaps it can be looked at both ways.

As you say, however, not a lot to get too concerned about:D
