Achievements Starting at the Top of the World

Recommended Posts

I have spent all of FM21 grinding through youth-only saves in England.  I've decided to take a break from that grind and try to win some trophies in an Achievement Hunter save (excel files adapted from Lutterworth Fox's work).   For the beginning of the save, I took six nations to choose from.  I narrowed it down to clubs that are in the second tier (FM-wise) with potential to get promoted back into the top flight.

The nations and clubs:

Bulgaria - Lokomotiv Sofia

Hungary - Vasas

Norway - Tromso

Poland - Widzew Lodz

Romania - Rapid Bucuresti

Sweden - Degerfors IF

I put the Wheel of Randomness to work to choose the nation and by default the club.

To the top of the world, we go and begin the save!

I love a stadium with snow!

Here are some the achievements we are trying to attain.

Finally through the first half of the season in Norway.

We are in a three-way battle for two automatic promotion places with Ranheim and HamKam.  It's a race that could come down to the last match of the season.

Center forward Moses Ebiye leads the way with nine goals and also tops the team with five assists.  I've been going with a stable starting XI for most of the season without much rotation.  Promotion is the essential for the club this season.

2021 Mid-Season Update

No achievements achieved but a quick update

Not a bad start for a newly promoted team to the Eliteserien.

On The Move

When the biggest club in Norway rings your phone, you answer the call.  You take the interview.  When they offer the job, you accept even with the team in 11th place and having no hope of playing in Europe next season.  The infrastructure is just too big to fail.  The opportunities to win trophies is just too great.  The pressure to win is also great but I want that pressure.

So, I hopped in my car and made the 16 hour/700 mile drive from Tromso to Trondheim to take over the job.

They do have a specific type of football that what to see and win trophies.

I didn't realise Norway was that long!

If I'm looking at the borders right, it appears to share a border with Russia.  All the way at the top, it looks like Norway has the all the land at the top above Sweden and Finland.  I've finally got below the Arctic Circle and I still have plenty of room to move south in Norway.  It's such a long and thin country.  It's like Chile but in Europe.

2021 Season Review

I took over the club when they were in 11th place.  We won all six league matches while I was in charge and moved up the table to a 4th place finish.

I added to my trophy cabinet with the 2021 Braathens Cup (Norwegian Cup).  This secured our place in the Europa Conference for the 2022-23 season regardless of our outcome against Stromsgodset.

The youth intake is not what I hoped for.  No additions to the Achievement Hunter chart even with the Braathens Cup victory.

2022 Season Review

Transfers In

We made two big additions to the squad in this fiscal year.  Centerbacks Nicolas Pignatel Jenssen from Stabaek and Odin Bjortuft from Odds come into the club.  Jenssen came in to shore up depth at the position.  Bjortuft came to replace the departed Gustav Valsvik who left us for Nice.  We had two other big defections in the summer of 2022 when right back Adam Andersson left for Germany and star right winger Carlo Holse left for a big money contract in China.

We got out to a very hot start and never looked back as we claimed our first league title and third achievement of this save (win a league title).

We ripped through the early rounds of the Europa Conference.  I expected us to come up short of the group stages after we were drawn against AZ in the last qualifying round but we utterly destroyed them in Holland before winning the tie, 9-3.

The group stage was relatively easy with Arsenal beating everybody so it was a race for second place which we won on the last match day beating APOEL, 5-0.

The stars of the team were left winger Stefano Vecchia who led the team with 19 goals and Edvard Tagseth who led the squad with 19 assists from the midfield.  The Eliteserien Player of the Year was neither of these players as left back Haitam Aleesami and his 19 assists in addition to solid defense earned those honors.

In the offseason, I made yet another move as one of the jobs that I had my eye opened up.

In my opinion, Nurnberg is a club with massive potential.  A 50,000 seat stadium....a solid youth academy.  It just needs the right manager to harness that potential.  This is a club where I could stay for some time as I try to push them out of the 2.Bundesliga into the Bundesliga and then finally back into Europe.

I agree about their potential, especially with their history (admitedly a very long time ago).

2022-23 Nurnberg Season Review

My first match in charge was unspectacular 1-1 draw against Darmstadt before we fell in the DFB-Pokal to Energy Drink Salzberg.  The turning point of the season came when we came from behind to beat Erzgebirge Aue.  That sent us on a eight-game winning streak which ended when we blew 2-0 lead while down to 10-men against Paderborn.  Two more wins to close the season means we closed the season earning 30 points out a possible 33.

When I took over the club, we were in 15th place and teetering on the possibility of getting relegated to the 3.Liga.  Our late season explosion pushed us all the way up to 5th place and ahead of Hamburg which was another club that I had my eye on while at Rosenborg.

The backbone of the team is down the middle with the center forward, Sergio Cordova, leading the with 14 goals.  A hybrid attacking midfielder/central midfielder Sarpreet Singh leading the team with 10 assists and our goalie Christian Mathenia leading the team with five man of the match awards.  That's who we are going to build this team around as we push for promotion to the Bundesliga.

This club was really underperforming when I came on board based on the xG stats.  Based on those stats, we should have won the league and got into the Bundesliga.  I dragged the team up to 5th place.  Hopefully, with a full season under my management, we will win the league and play Bundesliga football in the 2024-25 season.

Summer 2023 Transfers

Brought in a bunch of younger players on frees to shore up cheaper depth at a few positions.  The big deals were the veteran signings with a pair of central midfielders in the attack-minded Alexander Muhling and the defense-minded Marcel Sobottka.

I missed on my centerback and center forward signings so I had to go the loan route to fill in some gaps there in the short term.

2023-24 Midseason Update

I'm not going to say what we have done in the first half of the season because don't talk about it while it's happening.  That said, we have a healthy 15 point lead over 3rd place Hamburg for the automatic promotion spots and an 11-point lead over 2nd place Darmstadt for the league title.  Barring a massive collapse, we should be playing Bundesliga football next season.

Center forward Sergio Cordova has been a force at the center forward position this season with 16 goals in all competitions and averaging just a tick under a goal per 90 minutes.  Loanee Daishawn Redan has been important coming off the bench with seven goals while getting the spot start while we push Cordova out to the right flank.  Assists have come from a variety of locations.  Center midfielder Paxton Pomykal, attacking central midfieler Sarpreet Singh and left winger Robin Hack all have six assists and left-back Mads Petersen has five assists.  Loanee Javier Montaro has locked up the opposition attack all season and taken some of the pressure off his partner, Chris Richards, from having to everything in the center of the field.

The youth intake looks like it will be a good one with a bunch of quality players coming in at a variety of positions.

Only one major signing coming in:

Nikolay Korobeinikov comes in on a free from FC Honka.  He will provide even more depth at the center forward which could be important as teams are sniffing around Cordova in the winter transfer window.

Defensive minded center midfielder Jonannes Geis departs for 3.Liga side Heidenheim in a deal that was completed just before teams could sign him on a free.  Geis had played just 20 minutes for us this season and he wanted to leave.  I was more than happy to get this amount for him.  I called up summer signing Jens Castrop who has nine U21 caps and three U21 goals for the German national team.

2023-24 Season Review

The undefeated season ended when Bayern took us out in the DFB-Pokal Quarterfinal.  We held a 1-0 lead before our defense completely crapped the bed under Munich's pressure.  The undefeated league season ended two weeks later at the hands of Karlsruhe who beat us 2-1.  We rebounded from that loss and won every game for the rest of the season.

With a season like ours, we absolutely ran away with the league title by claiming the title by 26 points over second place Hamburg.  Furth lost in the promotion playoff match.  Bielefeld and Darmstadt fell apart at the end of the season and finished outside the playoff spot.  Schalke got off to a slow start and couldn't rebound.  As a result, they will spend another season in the 2.Bundesliga.  At the other end of the table, St. Pauli, Eintracht Braunschweig and Magdeburg return to the 3.Liga.

We set three records this season.  Two in the 2.Bundeliga and one team record.

The 2.Bundesliga Team of the Year featured 10 Nurnberg players.  The only position to not make the team was our deep lying playmaker where three players rotated through the position during the season.

A great team effort this season.  A few players will find themselves on the transfer list due to the combination of promotion to the Bundesliga and lack of playing time this season.

A few good players come through the intake.  The downside is our top two players play the exact same position.

The board doesn't give me a lot of money to spend on transfers so I'm forced to sell to raise the bulk of my transfer funds and buy players.  Or I find players who are out of contract with their current club.

These numbers should all be green next season as we move up to one of the top leagues in Europe.

With the record breaking season, no achievements were earned this season and we were one goal away from an undefeated season.

Early Bundesliga Days

Early days have been tough and we are flirting with relegation.  Defense has just been awful.

We've brought in a lot of players in the summer window so some of this bad form could be because of the new faces.  However, some of the new faces are just new permanent faces to the club as they were loan with us last season (Redan and Montero).

What a difference a jump in league makes.  Last season, we were scoring goals for fun and not allowing a lot of goals.  Now, we are struggling to score goals and the opposition is scoring goals for fun.
