Yeah at some point I will do a Dutch league save. There a few teams I like the look of like FC Groningen, FC Utecht, RKC etc.

Right! It was tough to decide which team to manage as there are so many interesting clubs in that league...

Early Days In Zwolle

Welcome to Zwolle, a beautiful little city in the dutch Overijssel province. A rather quiet city close to the Ijsselmeer of an approx 125K population.

Here plays PEC Zwolle, the local football club. Since being promoted in the 2012-13 season, they have been playing in the Eredivisie.

Their best ever finish was 8th place though, back in 1978. In comes Joe Baxter, the South African football manager. Let´s see what he can do here.

spacer.png

Not much silverware there. Except for the KNVB Beker win in 2014, when Zwolle beat Ajax 5-1 in the final. A rather modern and solid stadium for 14.000.

Goalkeepers

spacer.png

This is maybe our weakest area. Bertrams and Mous are solid, but not much more. Kesting has more talent but still much to learn.

Defenders

spacer.png

This looks better. Paal, Lam and van Polen are the best players here. Although van Polen is already 34 he is still the leader of the team. Add some talented youngster like van Looy and Chirino and you have a nice defence mixture.

Midfielders

spacer.png

The strongest area of our first team. Lots of gifted wingers and a solid rock in central midfield. Pherai and Hedilazio are only here on loan but maybe we will be able to make their moves permanent if they play well enough. Some of those players can play as strikers too.

Attackers

spacer.png

2 Loanees and 1 talent. Buitink and Tedic will fight for the 1 place in attack. Van den Heerik will get to play the odd first round cup game.

Tactics and Formation

spacer.png

We will try to play and stay positive.

Key Players

Rico Strieder (28), German

spacer.png

Without doubt our best player. The former Bayern Munich academy player has matured into a solid central midfielder with good teamwork (17) and work rate (17). His positioning (15), anticipation (14) and concentration (16) are also top notch. The natural engine in our midfield.

Thomas Lam (26), Finnish, 23 caps

spacer.png

Lam is leading from the back. As the main central defender, his teamwork (16), tackling (13), jumping reach (14), positioning (13) and stamina (15) will come in handy.

Bram van Polen (34), Dutch

spacer.png

Despite his age, Van Polen is still our top right back. His natural fitness (15) is nearly unrivalled in the team. Teamwork (15), Determination (14) and Leadership (17) make him the ideal captain for us.

Mustafa Saymak (27), Turkish

spacer.png

He can play anywhere in midfield. But he is best when he can play on the wing. His technique (15) and his dribbling (14) make him the ideal candidate for one of the flanks.

Pre-Season Friendlies

spacer.png

There´s not much to be angry about. Maybe we should have won against Zwickau, a team from the German 3. Liga. I bet Heino was not happy we slaughtered him :)

The New Season Begins

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

I do not complain. We can be glad we got 3 points after those 3 games. But... Twente scored the winner in the 92nd minute after the ref went to the VAR monitor and awarded them a penalty after their striker dived in our box. That´s what yo get when you are the Underdog! Against PSV it was pretty obvious from the start that we would not get many chances. So I was delighted when Drost scored the equalizer just before the break. A pity they scored again right after the break to recover their lead. And then they scored again of course. The game against Vitesse was pretty even and it was Drost scoring again with our defence holding tight.

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

It would be nice if we could finish there at the end of the season. Heracles and Emmen are the surprise teams but alas it is early days.

Love the Dutch league. Some world class clubs. Fans are wild. Youth production is phenomenal what more can you want!

Great memories of my time there with Heerenveen.

Great challenge as well. Few good players came through the ranks at zwolle in recent times!

Welcome @SixPointer  :)  You are absolutely right. My first time with a dutch club and it´s big fun! I always found Zwolle a kinda "cute" club so now it´s the time to make them become great (maybe) ;)

A Golden October

EREDIVISIE & KNVB BEKER

spacer.png

What a month. We managed to score 10 points in 4 matches, including a massive win against AZ. And it should be clear now who is our striker number one: Thomas Buitink scored 6 goals, showing his class. A pity he is only playing on loan for us. If he continues scoring, we should make this move permanent definately. In the KNVB Beker, we managed to defeat second division outfit Cambuur but man that was a tough game! They parked the bus and gave us something to think about but Misidjan scored with a long range effort and that settled it. Our next opponent in the Cup has a bigger name: We will play Ajax Amsterdam at home.

spacer.png

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

5th place looks good. But the tough games against the big guns are yet to come. So let´s just enjoy the moment. Heracles are still surprising though.

Back To Reality

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

We could not stop in-form Heracles. This must have been our worst game of the season yet - we created not one clear chance and only had one shot on goal. Den Haag was a different matter - we dominated the game and the scoreline does not at all reflect what happened on the pitch. Though the timing of our winning goal seems lucky it was more than deserved as we squandered so many clear chances before. 3 points after all, all good. Then we drew against Feyenoord who are 3rd at the moment. Our defending was top-notch again. This is how you play against the big clubs.

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

We remain in 5th position. I hope our good showings against allegedly stronger teams continue. Heracles are still hanging on to the top.

Living In A Winter Wonderland

EREDIVISIE & KNVB BEKER

spacer.png

We trashed VVV in a wonderful game orchestrated by Mustafa Saymak at the beginning of the month. The following draw against Waalwijk was well earned in the 90th minute when super-sub Reza scored the equalizer. In the KNVB Beker we gave favorites Ajax a hard fight, but the defeat was inevitable as we ran out of steam in extra time. Maybe this fatique was the reason behind our loss against Heerenveen 5 days later. At least we were able to recover from that with a win against Willem II, a nice christmas gift.

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

We hold on to 5th place. But we need to strengthen the team.

A New Year

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

January didn´t go as smooth as the months before. We lost 3 games but I guess that´s not unusual against this opposition. At least we beat Heracles and Vitesse.

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

Still in 5th place. And still a lot of matches to be played.

NEWS

 spacer.png

  • We brought in a new keeper in January for 450K from Allianza Lima
  • Steven Rivadeneyra is the current national team keeper of Peru
  • The 26 year old is a lot better than our current keepers including Mous
  • His best attributes are his bravery (16), his reflexes (15), his positioning (14) and his decisions (14)

  • We decided to terminate the loan of Slobodan Tedic as he did not get many games here and his performances were rather underwhelming
  • We sold winger Mike van Duinen to St. Etienne for 650K

When The Going Gets Tough The Tough Get Going

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

A great month results-wise. We managed not to lose against the two top teams of the league and won our other fixtures against lesser opposition. We were of course lucky against Willem II, when we scored the winner in injury time but the was just the reward for our hard work until the end. Buitink continues to score and the fear of not having him in our team next season grows. I really hope we can make his move permanent or at least loan him out again.

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

With 42 points, it is unlikely that we get relegated this season.

Marching On In March

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

Buitink saves the month once more. We manage not to lose and collect 7 points in march. That AZ draw was a very lucky one for us as they dominated possession and the whole game, but we managed to break through once on the counter and scored.

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

We move up to 4th! Who would have thought that before this seaons. Surely I didn´t.

NEWS

spacer.pngspacer.png

We wrap up 2 new signings for next season: Both are coming on a free transfer as their contracts run out. Paul Jaeckel is a 22 year old German central defender with great physical attributes. He joins from German second division outfit Greuther FurthLuca Vido (24) joins from Italian side Atalanta Bergamo and can play as a striker or winger. He´s a very technical gifted player with flair, technique and dribbling his most outstanding attributes.

Jinxed!

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

@Deisler26must have jinxed us! We lose our first game in months against RKC Waalwijk of all clubs! Then again I guess this must have happened some time and in secret I am glad it happened as it takes some pressure from us. A very dominating performance against Twente provides us with 3 points and the game against last placed Sittard was easy as soon as Buitink broke the lock.

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

Still 4th. Heracles is hot on our tails.

NEWS

This is what our Youth Intake looks this year. We don´t complain as Babel, van der Pol, Markley and van Schijndel could become good players (maybe).

A Photo Finish

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

A comfortable win against Sparta Rotterdam sent us on the right track and the draw against Groningen could have been a win easily but damn this last game of the season! If we at least snatched a point, we would have finished 3rd! But it wasn´t to be. Alas, 4th place is great for a club like us.

EREDIVISIE

We gloriously finish 4th and will play in Europe next season!

Season Summary

spacer.png

spacer.png

spacer.png

spacer.png

Steven Rivadeneyra was definitely our signing of the season. Well he was the only signing as well though, but nevertheless he helped to tighten our defence and so was heavily responsible for our great league finish. Player of the season must go to Thomas Buitnink, who scored 17 goals and also became top scorer of the Eredivisie. A pity he did not want to extend his loan and we were also not able to buy him. Captain Bram van Polen had the most assists although mostly playing as a right back. Sad thing is, he did not want to extend his contract and so we have to do without him as well. A lot of players will leave and we will have to build quite a new team for next season.

NEWS

spacer.png

A new stadium is in the planning phase. But nothing really specific can be said about it yet.

spacer.png

SC Telstar becomes our feeder club. We will be able to loan players out to them to get match practice for their development.

Summer Time And The Living Is Easy

A lot of players have left us. We will miss our captain Bram van Polen the most. Reza Ghoochannejhad is also gone, but he was already 33 years old. Keeper Xavier Mous didn´t want to play second fiddle to our new keeper and let his contract run out. Winger Virgil Misidjan was looking for a new challenge and never really found a home here. We needed to react and bring in new quality players. Besides Jaeckel and Vido we signed these players:

Aschraf El Mahdioui

spacer.png

Signed from Slovakian club AS Trencin, the 25 year old Ajax academy graduate gives us more depth in central midfield. His Vision (16), First Touch (15) and Passing (15) make him a prime candidate for the advanced playmaker role.

Rodrigo Arciero

spacer.png

The 28 year old Argentinian right back comes from Finnish side SJK. He is a good tackler (14) and marker (13). And he can also play on the left.

Charles Andreas Brym

spacer.png

The left winger from Canada, signed from Mouscron, brings great Pace (16) and Acceleration (17) to the table. And he is a good crosser (15) too.

Juanma Hernandez

spacer.png

Here comes a 19 year old Real Madrid player for our attack! Ok, it was only their academy, but that´s something for a club like us. He is a great finisher (16) with a great first touch (16). We paid 2.3M for him.

Rolando Blackburn

spacer.png

The Panama international joins from Bolivian side The Strongest. He cost us 750K. Also a great finisher (16) and a good header (15).

We also bring in some players from our youth team:

  • Keeper Damian van Drenth (18)
  • Left winger Arenchelo Leito (18)
  • Right winger Jarno Westerman (19)

A Whole New Team

Goalkeepers

spacer.png

It is obvious who is the master and the servants here. Apart from the odd cup game maybe.

Defenders

spacer.png

Jaeckel is a massive addition to our defence. He will have to lead alongside veteran LamArciero on the right and Paal on the left sounds good on paper. But there is a lot of talent here to step in and make their marks.

Midfielders

spacer.png

Strieder is still the king in our midfield, but El Mahdioui threatens his throne. Both will play of course. There is some nice competition for the last place in central midfield though as well as for the wings.

Attackers

spacer.png

The veteran striker Blackburn should start here. But he will need some rest in a tight schedule of course.

Key Players

Steven Rivadeneyra

spacer.png

He showed in the second half of last season how important a great goalkeeper can be to a team. And his reflexes got even better (15)!

Paul Jaeckel

spacer.png

Our new skipper in defence. With his pace (16) he should be able to catch up with the quickest strikers in the league.

Rico Strieder

spacer.png

The man, the machine, the man machine! He controls our team on the pitch.

The Secret Of Getting Ahead Is Getting Started

EREDIVISIE & EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE

spacer.png

What is going on here? Am unbelievable start to the season! I suspect it is down to the Europa League euphoria and that I finally changed our tactics to "Very Attacking"... We score but we also concede a lot when we play with this tactic (which we did apart from the 2nd legs in the Europa League). One sure fact is that Rolando Blackburn is starting to score for us and El Mahdioudi is providing him with great assists. Even Jaeckel already scored two goals. With that courageous approach we were able not to lose against heavyweights Ajax and AZ. We will continue playing brave and attacking. The most important thing though is that we made it to the group stage in europe after those games against Motherwell and OB from Denmark. This is what our group looks like:

spacer.png

I say we have a chance to qualify for the knockout rounds! The opposition does not look too scary to me to be honest. Even a team from Gibraltar is there.

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

Looking good considering we already played teams like Ajax and AZ and managed not to lose.

NEWS

spacer.png

We wrap up a deal with 26 year old central defender Yordi Vilchez from Alianza Lima. He will join us when his contract runs out on January 1st 2022.

Making It A September To Remember (Not Quite)

EREDIVISIE & EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE

spacer.png

There´s the first defeat of the season, but no need to be too depressed - we were able to score 2 goals against Feyenoord with our attacking style. The same happened in Copenhagen where we held FC Kobenhavn to an impressive draw. Next were 2 bottom of the league clubs, but those games are harder than those against the big ones as they park the bus so heavily. In the end we came out winning both, against Groningen we were lucky, against FC Eindhoven not so much. The result does not reflect how much more chances we had to make it 2 digits but only managed 2. And they scored one with one chance. We closed the month with an ECL match at home against polish cult club Legia. A pretty tight affair but we came out winning in the end. 3 more points in our group.

spacer.png

We are top, but it is a pretty close affair and we have only played 2 games. Not surprising though that the Red Imps are bottom. We´ll play them next.

EREDIVISIE

6th. This is fine.

The Clear Light That Belongs To October

EREDIVISIE & EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE

spacer.png

No defeat this month! Our self confidence shows with a great understanding of our very attacking tactics. Ok, the opposition was not that scary but you have to win those games in the first place. The win against minnows Red Imps sees us go top of our group in the ECL:

spacer.png

EREDIVISIE

We move closer to the top but I know this is only the beginning of the season.

EREDIVISIE & EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE

You Didn´t Come This Far To Only Come This Far

EREDIVISIE & EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE

spacer.png

The results are improving and we are scoring more now it seems. Especially Blackburn seems to have "clicked". In the KNVB Beker we fielded some kind of a 2nd string players team but won nevertheless against 2nd division Dordrecht. The game against Legia was one for the spectators: With both teams already qualified it was some scoring bonanza. We did not lose a game this month. Hope it continues.

spacer.png

Top of the group! Not bad for first-timers.

spacer.png

Our next opponent in the KNVB Beker will be old buddies Heracles.

EREDIVISIE

We are keeping up with the pace of the frontrunners now.

EREDIVISIE & KNVB BEKER

Three pretty tight home games there in January. We scrape through in the KNVB Beker against Heracles after penalties, then win against VVV, then lose against PSV. All in all not bad for us as we keep up with the pace in the league and got through to the quarter finals just to be pitted against some old rival:

Getting (Mostly) On The Right Track

RESULTS

spacer.png

So many draws... The KNVB Beker elimination was no surprise, as Ajax are just miles above us. Gladly we picked up form after that with 2 wins and an -at least- away draw in Groningen who still fielded a 38 year old Arjen Robben. The draw for the knockout round of the Europa Conference League has been made:

So Glasgow Rangers it is. This looks heavy on paper and I am sure this is gonna be heavy on the pitch.

March Madness

RESULTS

spacer.png

A mad march indeed. Our players are beginning to tire I guess. Ajax slaughtered us, then Rangers almost did the same but at least one away goal gave us a bit of home that something is possible in the 2nd leg. Which, of course, wasn´t the case as we only drew 1-1 and went out. We beat Heerenveen in between but that wasn´t worth much as in-form FC Utrecht took all the points in that 2-3 home defeat. We really have to wake up.

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

Even Vitesse was able to overtake us.

NEWS

This couldn´t have happened at a much better time. Damn! We really are running out of strikers. Maybe I really should make Jizz Hornkamp an offer...

RESULTS

Ok, these results might have been expected beforehand but a 1-5? That a bit much but just shows we want the season to end now. Only 2 games to go.

EREDIVISIE

spacer.png

It is going to be hard to hold on to 5th place. AZ are in top form and Vitesse are there as well.

NEWS

The Youth Intake did not bring a "Golden Generation" but maybe a silver or bronze one. Niels de Velde could become a good playmaker in the future. Maybe.
