We get off to a strong start, but the big take away is that we've qualified for the group stages of the Conference League!

I definitely think that we can get a result off Breioablik, and maybe a draw against Ludogorets.

A solid debut for the national team. Speaking of debuts, I had four players get their first cap for Luxembourg. I'll do a review with them at the end of the year or whenever it comes up.

Flogged by Denmark, but I think the only reasonable option here is to finish in front of Cyprus.

We had a first draw in the legaue but are still 3 points clear, and also a very disappointing performance against the team feom Iceland puts us in last place in the Conference group.

This has been billed as a potential Golden Generation, and whilst I disagree with that for now, it could very well be one for the National team rather than the club. I'm loving the mix of nationalities here too, we even get a random Chinaman!

We secure the league, our 2nd in a row. The board decided that was the right time to turn pro (2 months earlier than planned) and I've negotiated training and youth facility upgrades as well. We are definitely trending upwards!

While at first glance it looks like the only player from Luxembourg is the international Holtz, 5 of our players in the 1st XI are classified as home grown. I can't pick them for the national team yet though, as they need to have lived here 5 years before being eligible.

Previously Managed Teams

Zalgiris Vilnius (LTU): Won the 2045 league, qualified for the Europa League and were unlucky to advance out of their group, finishing 3rd with 8 points ahead of Kilmarnock and behind Ajax and Mol Fehervar.

Club Rank: 57th (-)

Nation Rank: 15th (+3)

Wexford (IRL): Won the 2045 league, and for some reason had an automatic spot in the CL groups. They were joined there by Dundalk, which makes things even more confusing. I think it's the overlap of the calendar that confuses things. Anyway, they finished last in their group with 3 points (as did Dundalk), behind Porto, Bilbao and Bayern.

Club Rank: 48th (+1)

Nation Rank: 24th (-1)

I should note that Bosnia has now achieved an automatic group stage spot. I'm unsure as to whether I should take them off the list (as they have technically achieved the goal I wanted) or wait and see what happens when I complete Luxembourg. What I mean by that is if Bosnia are not in the top 10 when that happens do I manage there and return them to the top 10?

As expected, we lost to Wexford, but not as badly as I thought. We then got past the Finnish and Montenegrin champions, and we have a very winnable tie next up to get to the group stage in Flora Tallinn of Estonia.

I had to be very careful about who to bring in and what position they play in order to co-operate with the league rules. Turns out that failed miserably. I'll need to rotate the squad a little bit, but it won't be too bad I think. Delage slots into the backline, Rajoarimanananananana (French 2nd nationality) becomes our new starting DM, Kil is a loan option up front, and I bring in Masson permanently as a bench option.

For the first time in over 2 seasons, we have lost a league game :( I suppose it's not so bad, most of our players were rotated out to save them for the Conference League playoff, which we ended up winning pretty comfortably.

It's a tough group, Zeljeznicar (one of THREE Bosnian teams) have made the last 8 the last two editions of the Conference League, but we could get something from Suduva and AEK, who are not as good as they are in real life.

I changed our tactical mentality from positive to attacking, as I felt that we were taking too long to break teams down (scoring very late). It worked wonders in the first game as we smashed Progres 5-1 away. As expected, Sarajevo cleaned us up, and it looks like Suduva will as well as they whipped AEK 5-1! I have some excuse though, as both our starting CMs are out injured long term and the gap to the replacements is quite large. But that's just the way things go.

On paper, Bossi is definitely our best player by a mile. At 29 though he's probably coming to the end of his peak, and there aren't too many contenders to take his place.

Nations & Clubs That Produced Luxembourg Best XI

Luxembourg (9): F91 Dudelange (2), Progrès Niederkorn (2), Fola Esch (1), Hamm Benfica (1), Minière Lasauvage (1), Titus Pétange (1), Victoria Rosport (1)

Belgium (3): Club Brugge (1), Cercle Brugge, Gent (1)

Germany (3): Hertha Berlin (1), Hoffenheim (1), Nuremberg (1)

France (2): Bordeaux (1), Nice (1)

Portugal (1): Benfica (1)

Some pretty good foreign clubs have produced some players from Luxembourg it seems, but the majority have come from home.

This is a ridiculously tough group. Spain (4th), Ireland (40th), Switzerland (55th), Slovenia (66th), Malta (196th). We should easily account for Malta, and maybe get a result against Slovenia. But 5th place might be the only logical aim here.

Preseason 2047

A long preseason, and we actually won our first CL qualifying tie! We lost to Wexford again in the next round, but it was a lot closer than last year. We then moved comfortably past FH, and only St Gallen of Switzerland stand between us and a spot in the Europa League groups. If we lose that we go into the Conference League groups again, which is also fine.

No transfers were made this season as I'm complying with the home grown league rules.

Off to a good start in the league, and we ran it real close against St Gallen but not close enough. Unbelievably we were seeded second for the Conference League draw, and got an okay group. Hertha will probably be untouchable, but we could get results against APOEL and Fortuna.

A disappointing draw to Victoria, and we needed a stoppage time penalty to beat Kaerjeng, but we're still doing quite well. It looks Jeunesse Esch will be a threat this season, with 6 wins in 6 games and only 2 goals conceded. It's time to change that.

More of the same, but Victoria have closed the gap. This was also the month where a CB was top scorer for us, with Delage getting his 5 goals in the last 3 games.

2048 Youth Intake

I was promised a golden generation, so I'm a little disappointed here. We'll see how these guys develop, but I'm not that optimistic. At least there's plenty of good personalities further down the list.

Nawrocki joining up is huge! He looks like he is going to be a real star for Luxembourg.

He's been pretty good so far! The main issue I have is trying to convince other players to commit to us that are nowhere as good as Nawrocki but better than a majority of the players we already have. They always refuse because the reputation of their other nationality (mainly Belgium or France) is higher and they want to play for them. For starters mate, you're in your late 20s, you're not even being considered for the D grade national team, there's a reason you're not getting looked at. Come and make a difference. But they always say no :(

Enjoying the save and the read so far.  I did the San Marino Challenge in FM19 through to the 2044 season - and am currently managing FC Vaduz in a Liechtenstein Challenge (why do I do this to myself?!).  But this sounds pretty familiar.  With Liechtenstein the qualifying period is 5 years compared to 30 (!) with San Marino - but there's a striker at a L4 Liechtenstein club who hasn't been picked by Kosovo and he's 29.  I'd play him for Liechtenstein as I have very few strikers - but he just says "no" without even getting to the point I can pursuade him with guaranteeing he'll start.  Annoying!  Pretty sure I'll have that with a couple of Swiss guys at FC Vaduz who aren't that far from 5 years at the club and therefore qualifying.

With San Marino, the issue was with youth intakes with dual Italian/Sammarinese eligibility.  When I started to produce Serie A level talent (which was not even one a year due to the reputation of the San Marino league even though I was playing as San Marino Calcio in the Italian league) I only started to pursuade people to play for San Marino ahead of Italy when I qualified for my first World Cup finals.  Thankfully, that was the time when 2 players were coming through who turned into world class players, so they agreed to play for San Marino and really changed my team and the save.  So, you might need a bit of luck with the draw in the qualifiers and then you should find you'll have some luck once you've qualified (the Euros didn't make much difference).

But, all part of international management in FM needing some love from SI.

Yeah I wish the option to talk to them was automatic rather than them just flat out refusing. The whole deal with Nawrocki just came by chance I think, but even then I had to talk to him about 4 times before he finally switched. Then another random thing happened where a defender once considered “promising” with German nationality out of Dortmund agreed to play for us when he was 17, made about 5 or 6 appearances for Luxembourg, then randomly switched to Germany, made 1 U20 appearance and then switched back to Luxembourg. I’m not complaining of course, but all his previous caps have been erased and he made his debut all over again when in actual fact he’s made about 7 apps. It’s just strange.

What’s  the Liechtenstein challenge again? Is it winning the EL to get an automatic CL spot?

We came within one game of a maiden European Championships berth :( But to be fair we had no business beating the Czechs on paper, but we created more xG than them and through we went! At least we cleaned up the EIL awards though. Interesting to note that Moser 6A* made his international debut before his senior club debut

No games this month, but this is definitely an interesting group. The Czechs have a chance to get revenge on us, and Belarus and Hungary will be no easy task either. My personal aim here is to not get relegated.

For sure being able to talk to them as a default would help - but also a little dose of reality.  In your case, a lot of these players will get nowhere near a top national team and you're offering them international football.  irl they'd jump at the chance - especially as you are on the up!  I think being able to tell them that would help and hopefully it can be programmed to think "you're right - I'm in!".  There is an international management discussion thread in the feature requests part of the forum, and it does seem like SI are taking it on board, so fingers crossed!

The Liechtenstein challenge is to win the CL (you can't qualify for Europe via the league unlike San Marino), so it's via the Liechtenstein Cup (which my reserves won last year easily) and it will be winning the Conference League to get a Europa League place, then win that to get a Champions League place and win that - plus win the World Cup with Leichtenstein.  Easier than the San Marino Challenge in some ways - it took me 10-15 years to start beating decent international teams there - but already beaten Iceland and Hungary in season 2 of the save.  We're top of our Conference League group half way through the 6 games as well - and the first youth intake was really good.  But it will be harder to win the CL without entry via the league.  Changes what you prioritise though - as long as we don't get relegated from the Swiss Super League, league position doesn't really matter - but Europe really does!

The San Marino Challenge was tough as the league is terrible.  San Marino Calcio - the Sammarinese club playing in the Italian league system - got generally awful intakes right through 2044 in my FM19 save - I think dragged down because of the bad San Marino League ranking, even though we were in Serie A and winning titles.  Generally lucky to get 1 Serie A standard player per year - had 2 intakes in all the years with more!  irl they ceased to exist a couple of years ago - so you have to re-create the club in the editor and it all feels artificial - thus my move to Liechtenstein!  Sounds like they are going to start a new Sammarinese club and play at L5 of the Italian league system, so back to that for FM22.

I agree completely regarding the whole international management revamp, it’s gotta have some extended playability to it.

Liechtenstein definitely seems like the easier challenge in the short term given you start at a higher level and Europe is virtually guaranteed, but as you say the hard part is actually winning those tournaments. Good luck, if you don’t make a topic on the forums about it be sure to let me know how you go!

Our most dominant league win yet, breaking the league goalscoring record while we're at it.

Best XI

Ludovic Bertrand  -  Marco Delage  -  Hugo Pereira 6C*

Bertrand had a fantastic season up front, scoring nearly 50 goals in a record breaking season for him. But I think the focus should be on Hugo Pereira. He's the first of this next generation of players to appear, and he's just getting started. There's a few other guys waiting in the wings in other positions too. Watch this space.
