Having Trouble Really "Committing" To A Save

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Ive got a few saves on the go at the moment, ive written about a couple in Vitoria Guimaraes and Valencia here.

I find myself going between saves, and i feel i really need to commit to a save.

Can you help me find the team im looking for?

Its in two categories, and id be open to suggestions on either:

Category One

  • Top divison of England, Spain, Italy, Germany, France or Portugal
  • One that can attract some decent players, and has some cash. doesnt need to be a fortune, but at least that can change the team a little
  • European qualification is a bonus, but not essential
  • Team that has consistently undeperformed for 3 or more seasons or had quite a few managerial changes to get the best out of them
  • One that could challenge for things immediately, but unrealistic that they would actually win things immediately

I have a Chelsea save that i think fits these criteria quite well, but others i had in my head were the likes of Monaco, Bordeaux, Spurs, Dortmund, Fiorentina, Roma

Category Two

  • A team that is very vanilla that no one cares about
  • A team that sits in league 2 of England or Scotland
  • A team thats had little to no history of going upwards
  • A team that is either a big club for the city it is in......or........a big club but lives in the shadow of a big club and battles on in spite of this

Suggestions i had for this route were Tranmere Rovers, Grimsby Town, Carlisle United, Port Vale, Stranraer, Edinburgh City

Just wanted to gather a few thoughts

I DO like my Chelsea save by the way, and if you feel its a good team for category 1, i will continue, as its still early days in that save.

Thanks Everyone

Two teams that spring out for me straightaway for category 1 are Sevilla and Roma. Both big clubs with decent pedigree, realistically you should be able to challenge at the top end of the league in time but not immediately.

Category 2 I would suggest Harrogate Town in League 2, not too far away from where I live so Im debating starting a challenge with them. They have just been promoted to League 2 so they are tipped to go straight back down. Also Gateshead is a decent shout, lower than League 2 but they have a decent stadium already (12000 capacity I think) and obviously they are in the shadow of Newcastle so they could be a good challenge too.

must admit I do this quite a bit. I think its because the game has such a vast array of choice, you kind of want to manage......everyone.......for a bit.

Peterborough? ridiculously talented, very young squad, a bit of cash to spend, decent ground, underachievers... potential is there...

Newcastle? huge club, plenty of money to spend even without gutting the club, but if you do (and it needs it) you can get huge sums of money to spend.... crap owner, but is trying to sell the club ..

Both good shouts. Peterborough always seem a very big club for that level and yet never seem to do particularly well

It's a nightmare but for the few times a year you do commit and really get into a save, its worth all the wasted hours 😂. The bundesliga seems really competitive to me this year. I'am currently hertha Berlin. They have strong backing money wise. They are after a new stadium in the near future and have a good young squad. If you go as far as to guarantee champions league. You will get way over £40 Mill to spend.

The bonus of managing Peterborough is having the legend that is Barry Fry as your DOF.

Watford or Norwich for a wildcard choice...

Both huge teams, both have a vast amount of players that should be sold on for huge amounts of money, which leaves you with a massive warchest and a base of really good young players to build on...

Theres something about Plymouth Argyle thats really grabbing me.....and I dont know why. But theyve grown on me.

I looked through their squad and to be honest, i dont recognise anyone.

I looked through the history of the league finishes they have achieved, and it doesnt look like theyve ever been in the top division. Last time they played in the championship was a decade ago and since then, theyve spent most of their time in league 2.

Just been promoted to league 1 (i did say id like a league 2 team but newly promoted into league 1 is a pretty close 2nd).

They have a stadium that holds 16,000 people, so its pretty damn big for their level.

They are the only club in that area for miles around, so theyre very big for the level they play at

........and........

they have a very cool looking kit, badge, and they are sponsored by Ginsters Pasties................ Ginsters.....on the shirt!!

Have i found the club??? am i making a big mistake??? please tell me

I have played 2 seasons with Milan, and 2 seasons with Valencia and reached the same difficulties as you - i think it gets 2 easy 2 fast. I have started with Lille and i am loving it so far. But i will stick too their philosophy about buying young and ok cheap, 2 sell with a big big profit. I really do love this save so far, and they have decent cash, and with PSG in your League it is never easy.

These are the transfers after season 1. I have tried to buy as cheeply as i can, and the next season i will probably make some big transfers out. Renato Sanches wanna leave for a bigger club, and that is why i bought Frank Onyeka.

You can always check on your other games and see if Plymouth have been relegated to League 2 after one season. I think they are a great club to manage with the stadium, fan base and potential to do much better. And that's in addition to your fondness for the kits, badge and pasties!

I have three saves going atm., but I can't decide which one to commit to... I've played the pre-season of all three, but still can't make up my mind.
Even worse than that, I always come up with new teams I'd like to manage, then start a save with them and delete my other saves.

I hate it

Its because the game has too much choice.

Its like looking at a menu and thinking theres ten things on it youd like to order.

Its too easy when the going gets tough to think ahh stuff it, ill manage someone else.

Real life isnt anywhere near as easy as that, and in real life our expectations are lower too. Because we can play multiple games a night and because its not real life, i think we just expect to win, not least because we see people online winning with whatever club they choose.

So i can totally relate to you!

Everton (Cat 1) and Birmingham/Salford (Cat 2). Parma, Hamburger SV, Athletic Bilbao (sign only Basque players), Milan and Roma are quite attractive (maybe only signing italian players or/and former homegrowns in the club).

Exactly this.

I find myself going as the lowest team I can find or relate to and then 2 seasons in thinking I can go and rebuild Barcelona, or one of the Milans.

Guarantee I'd play as them for a season or two, be bored rigid of not having to manage a budget and spending 200m on players and then be off playing in the Dutch 3rd division with a 20 year plan to conquer AJax, which I'd quit after a year haha.

category 2 could be one of the many clubs in london / manchester area that are around league 2. Brentford, Dag & Red, Barnet

MK Dons and bristol rovers could work too.

Its Vanarama level but I love York City. It's a place I'd love to live, so it's why I've chosen them for FM21. However it will be a journeyman career, its the only way I know how to commit to saves.

Other teams Middlesbrough and then trying to emulate the past European successes at Nottm Forest.

Not sure if you are still looking, but

Cat 1: Schalke. They cannot be as bad in FM, as they are in real life. A decade removed from their excellent run getting them cups and European success. Derbies against BvB. 60k seater stadium, with good commercial backing. Even with a self-imposed 'salary cap' they still have a lot of wages available if you clear out the dead wood.

Cat 2: Falkirk. Former middling top flight club who have fallen on some difficult times, now down in the Scottish League 1, two tiers away from the top league. Have a good sized stadium, in the shadows of the Kelpies and the sometime clouds of smoke from Grangemouth ;-) Eventual challengers to the Old Firm? Only one way to find out.

Sheffield Wednesday is quite fun. Don't have the best Championship team in the world. Start on -6 so it's not going to be incredibly easy to get promoted the first season. Finances are in a bad way and the facilities are not great so it's a medium-long term project.

I have just finished my first season came very close to the playoffs missing out by a few points and in the summer the club was purchased by a tycoon.

Whenever I struggle with a save, I look at loading up holidaying for a decade of so and picking up there. Seeing the lay of the land, is there a fallen giant to rescue? Is there an interesting project? Can you break a monopoly?

I do the exact same thing.  I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one.  I just took Newcastle to 2nd in the first season, made some minor moves for CL depth and as soon as I get close to preseason my mind starts drifting to a new save.  My last long term save was FM2014!

I like this. I tend to only have 1 save from the start, as I wouldn't want to repeat - largely - the same clubs doing the same thing. So either a 'sliding doors' save after 8-10 seasons where I keep my original going and also resign from my starting club and then take a new job. I get the fun of a new club, while also comparing my first clubs continuing efforts but with a new manager.

I think if I do a totally from new second save, I will do the 10yr holiday :-)

I'm struggling to stick to a save atm.

Once the update comes out I will be starting my long term tenerife save. Until then I want a short 3 season save so looking for suggestions.

I'm having troubles now, more than ever...

Quit my Anderlecht save, do to being screwed over by the board in season 2.

Quit my Crystal Palace save 'cause it was going "Too well" (We were in 2nd place come January, 8 points down to 3rd place)

Quit my Ajax save after a season... Don't really remember why

*Sigh* I'm a hopeless cause :D

Try doing one of the challenges mate or just start unemployed and do a journeyman save etc.

Hey guys. I’ve just finished an enjoyable save with Deportivo, but have since floated about starting new game after new game without getting past pre-season in any of them. I’m looking for a long term one club save.

I’m looking for a team within One of the five big nations although which one doesn’t matter. Also it doesn’t matter to me if they are top flight or lower down. Preferably top or bottom tier of a nation though. Somewhere I can feel that I am not under too much pressure to succeed early on and perhaps build something over several years. Closest one I’ve thought of so far is Rostock in Germany or Marbella in Spain. I’m not too worried about finances etc. Just expectations that aren’t through the roof from the get go.

Charlton Athletic and Ipswich Town both in League one. Both former premier league teams. I have a soft spot for Charlton, No idea why but have played with them the past 3 years iterations

Paris FC the paupers of Paris - Try and get them to challenge and overtake their illustrious "Noisy neighbours"

1860 Munich would be a good side to try and restore to the top flight.

Idd and you could make it even harder by doing a youth only with them.
