Anyone gone back to FM19 since playing 20 or 21? How is it holding up?

Recommended Posts

I'm craving something new (or old) and think Dev Centre, Club Vision and the new match screens as the biggest features in recent years are all major steps back for the series, so I'm curious if FM19 holds up or if I've simply forgotten about why I moved on in the first place.

I don't find FM19 superior over 20 and 21. In fact I find all these features you call major step back as a step forward, so it's a matter of personal preference.

What's holding it back would you say? While they might have a higher ceiling they're desperately lacking old features that managing without feels like a chore or hurts the game experience.

19 carried me through most of last year as the ME engine is nowhere near as horrible as 20 and I think that also holds true to 21. Strange coincidence as right now I am debating going back to 19. I really want to love 21 but the ME is horrible. I would love to know from the people who love it, how they manage to get there strikers to score, wide players to cross, headers from 6 yards on target and actually see a one on one result in a goal.

I went back to FM19 last week.  Just can't get into saves in FM21 - too many bugs and it just pops the immersion bubble.  The biggest negative with FM19 is that it's so much slower - including loading and saving - but you get used to it after a couple of days.  However, outside of that I'm enjoying it far more and finding it far less frustrating.  I'm in 2044 in my save and although it's got a bit easy because after 2,300+ hours I know how to beat the ME, it's less bugged and out of FM19/20/21 is the best ME for me (although the beta FM21 ME was superior - but then they've done something outside of the ME to make it not as good for me).

Speaking of my own experience and observation; starting with FM20, the game is as buggy as hell.

I enjoyed FM19 a lot, spent quite some hours on it (still doing so), and was quite excited about FM20 - especially that the game UI is much faster, they introduced few nice features like those you mention.. But, I found soo many bugs - and not talking about opinionated/arguable stuff like ME, but fundamental functionalities, like; broken staff responsibilities, simple checkboxes won't work, missing options etc - that made the gameplay an annoying experience to me.

And what made even more frustrating (and hopeless, I must say) is that, I have actually spent my time to report all bugs I found, give feedback/input to SI etc so that they get fixed in the new version - and guess what? all the bugs persisted in FM21.. And not even to mention that multiple threads were deleted when I raised the point that they are still remain broken.  although they were reported by many ppl, acknowled as bug, and "under review" for months.

These days, I re-install the game from patch to patch, see that the bugs remains untouched, still giving another attempt (I like playing LLP) and then find some more bugs that was working fine in earlier version :lol: and then go back to FM19 (now I don't spend my time to report those bugs anymore though:)

~

TL DR; yeah (unfortunately) I still play FM19 - bit slower/sluggish UI comparing to newer versions, but everything works as they re supposed to work, hence still addictive ;)

I don't remember the overall game speed, but just from turning it on now earlier to see where I left things off I was very positively surprised at the snappiness and speed of menus. Much quicker than FM21. FM20 has them both beat though. Is this not the case for you?

I went back to 17 as usual. Having a blast.

FM17 is definitely the best of the recent ones prior to FM21 - it's the one I went back to last year with FM20 being so poor - also predates the invasion of the picnic tables and the moving backwards to hopefully move forwards 3D match visuals.

But FM21, even with the odd UI choices, is still the best for a long, long time and I haven't wanted to look back to older versions at all this year.

Same here.

18, 19, and 20 got gradually worse for me, with 20 being the worst ever edition imho.  21 is much better, but is spoilt by no longer offering a challenge when taking over poor or average clubs.  So I went back to 17 and have spent a dozen seasons mulling around the lower leagues with poor-average clubs, doing what poor average clubs do.. pretty much nothing    Lots of mid-tables finishes, a couple of relegation scraps, and a shot at the play-offs all mixed in.  But this next season is going to be our year.. the academy is starting to bear fruit!

Of course you're free to enjoy the game you like the most, but in my personal opinion there's not even to compare FM21 with its predecessors thanks to a ME that is really evoluted, not bug free of course, but I can't honestly remember a better ME. Even the so praised FM17 had very massive issues with defending, but the older versions are always the best I think.

If I think of FM18, what I remember is shots on corner flag and terrible finishing. If I think of FM19 I remember on terrible finishing, passive defending and slow teamplay. If I think of FM20 I remember of a very boring ME based on set pieces. None of them can be claimed to be better to FM21 in my opinion, which offers multiple ways to set your squad and a great variety of goals scored.

I admit I'm not the best example here because I'm still fuming at FM21 as much as any other FM I played so far  and I manage a top team but Ronaldo scored 18 in 14 appearances abd Dybala 8 in 14. Crossing seems fine to me, it could be due to my sensibility to the thing or the quality of players, surely sometimes they could take better decisions but in general I don't have such a huge problem with it. I agree on short range headers that seem to be OFF.

I don't know what you mean with one-on-one results in a goal but this is from the last matchday I played:

I played FM20 for 6 months during the first lockdown and kind of got bored of it, found it much too easy after winning CL with York City. I reverted back to FM19. I tried FM21 but enjoying my FM19 and I don't get to play too much at the moment so don't think I upgrade to 21 yet..

Just on a quick think I spotted in FM19 this evening, can anyone explain this? I LFC and after the 5th game in the Champions League marked as qualified for the next round. But looking at this, if sporting wins against Dortmund and I lost against Zurich there is a chance that I'd get overtaken by Sporting - obviously goal difference dependant.

In the end I beat Zurich 5-0 and went through as group winners and they drew 3-3 so its all good but to me it was not guaranteed after the 5th match.

I went back to FM10! Best save I ever had there restoring Nottm Forest to European glory. Move over Cloughie!

The animations are odd compared to 21, there's corner "cheats", heading can be a bit random sometimes but throw ins work and crossing isn't an immediate corner kick. I wish there were some of the newer features i.e. players being more of a pain in the ass and it wasn't so easy to find the next wonderkid even without searching.

edit: apparently I forgot the sorting rules of CL:

So you clearly have them in one of the categories before goal difference in all group matches.

1. higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question.

2. superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question.

3. higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question.

4. higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question.

If after having applied criteria 1. through 4., teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1. through 4. are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the remaining teams to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 5. through 12. apply in the order given to the two or more teams still equal.

5. superior goal difference in all group matches.

6. higher number of goals scored in all group matches.

7. higher number of away goals scored in all group matches.

8. higher number of wins in all group matches.

9. higher number of away wins in all group matches.

10. lower disciplinary points total based only on yellow and red cards received in all group matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points).

11. higher club coefficient.

In the Champions League, teams on the same number of points are split based on head to head record. So even if Sporting do win, I assume you have a better head to head which will ensure you go through.

Yip I’m back on Fm19 after trying to get into fm21 for a few months but can’t really complete a full season as I’m not enjoying it as much. Must be one of the worst games in the series for bugs and data issues, And I feel the licensing issues are getting worse each year and taking the fun away. Hopefully a major update in Feb will change my mind.

Thanks...sounds simple way of doing it :)
