FB attack vs FB Support with overlap instruction

Whats the difference between placing a FB on attack vs using support role with overlap instruction?

Interesting question, would be curious to hear an answer as well.

From what I gather:

In terms of individual mentality, they will be the same.

The attack duty will have "cross more often" and "get further forward" hard coded, but you can add those to the support duty as well.

In terms of influence on other players - the winger on the same side will have a reduced individual mentality if you use the overlap instruction.

The overlap instruction will affect what the wide player in front of the fullback does, rather than just the fullback. That is the obvious one. I can't really say any more than that without actually doing it. Which you should do and let us all know!

First of all the general mentality of a player on attack and support is different.

Also as mentioned - if you hover over the overlap box it explains that the player in front will hold onto the ball and await the overlap - could slow down transitions or discourage him from playing a central pass, or switch of play.

I personally tend to go for a fullback or wingback on attack duty depending on roles on that flank and create the natural overlap rather than use to instruction.

Also, the FB isn't hardcoded to run wide, even on an attack duty (which is one the reasons I always use full-backs if I have players with good decision-making). The overlap, in most cases, will encourage that.

FB on attack vs. FB on support with the overlap TI:

- FB on attack will (still) have a (bit) higher individual mentality

- FB on attack will tend to cross more (due to the hard-coded PI)

- if the wide forward or wide midfielder (depending on the formation) is played in an inside-oriented and primarily attack-minded role (IW/IF/RMD), a FB on attack will provide him with more effective support compared to FB on support, even with the overlap TI included (because instructions cannot fully compensate for what roles and duties do through their interaction)
