[FM21] A right Royal mess. Scandinavian Journeyman save starting in Faroe Islands. Very biased towards Youth Development. Possibly 100% #YouthOnly

Good luck. Hansen looks a smasher. Always nice to come in and your best player is a 21 year old who you have immediately tied down for 4 years!

He's just scored 5 goals in the Cup so he's certainly a smasher! :D

Much as they are by far my favourite Icelandic club, they are in the league below us and we are challenging for the title.

Youth Intake. It looks a pretty ropey intake to be honest. Nothing better than 4.0 PA. The CA appears to be pretty rubbish too.

Summary. We lost in a Semi and a Final, which was tough to take when you consider that we only lost 1 league game all season. We had both the best attacking and defensive records in the league and it would have been so good to go undefeated in the league, but we just fell short. On the plus side, we are in both Europe and the Royal League next season for the 1st time.

Teaching players new traits. Jan 2037

In another Nation, (possibly in the Gibraltar save I think), I had a problem where I was unable to teach players in the U19's new traits. It was greyed out despite me taking control of individual training for players in the U19 squad.

In the Faroe Islands it was fine, (I think), but now I am having a similar problem, but the opposite way round.

This is what it looks like in the Senior squad.

This is what it looks like on the responsibilities page, and I have dried to reset it a few times but it hasn't worked.

I can actually control the individual training for the Senior Squad. I just can't get the players to learn traits, (which is a big deal for me).

Has anyone noticed this and is there a workaround?

great to be able to follow one of your careers again!

Thanks very much.

I'm hooked on this save now, (despite the on-going issues). It's hard changing my mind-set to one of Journeyman save rather than 1 club #YouthOnly but I'm trying. (Although I did go a full season without signing anyone because..... I basically forgot).

Scandinavian Royal League rules. Jul 2037

So I have never played in this competition before so I never realised that the registration rules were that you could have only 3 players over 19 and 0 players over 20.

Is that accurate? Is that a real thing? (or was it a real thing when the competition existed?)

Progress. Jul 2037

I know this is going to sound ridiculous, but 18 seasons into this save I finally think it's bitten me. This season has been really significant in that respect. I think part of the problem is that it's all well and good playing a Youth Only save, (and I love it), but when you start off as an Amateur club and have to progress to a Semi-Pro club it really impacts things and I think it took it's toll on me a little. When I jumped ship from Miðvágs Bóltfelag to Ungmennafélagið Afturelding, I might have moved from Faroe Islands to Iceland, but I still went from 1 Semi-Pro club to another Semi-Pro club and I can tell you it's a real slog playing Youth Only but not being Pro.

Then I jumped ship just after we turned Pro and when I might have expected to reap the benefits of our Professional status, and went from a club that I had re-built, (albeit relatively quickly), to a Stjarnan squad that was already established and expected to be up there if not quite challenging for honours. Suddenly we are smashing teams and it finally feels that all this hard work has paid off. I've been really struggling with a new tactic all the way through this save. My Poacher on the left has been filling his boots all the way through, but I have struggled to find a DLF on the right who will really click. Last season I lost Skúli Hansen to a broken leg, (that will teach me for writing that he was good), and it's only this season where he has really shown what's possible in this DLF role. I think the problem previously was that the players just didn't have the intelligence to play the role effectively up to this point. When you think about it, I have largely had a squad of teenagers all the way through up to the last 2 seasons, and the areas in which young players often struggle most is "mental". I have had decent physical players and decent technical players and even a few who were decent at both, but up until Skúli Hansen I haven't had a striker who also had the mental attributes to go with them. He's given us an extra dimension and made the way we play far more fluid. It feels like things have finally "clicked" and all this time up to this point has been worthwhile.

I'm not saying that the save has been a slog up to now because I have enjoyed it for the most part, but I don't think there was a connection with the level I was playing at and the aims of the save ie. playing in the Royal League and competing with big Scandi clubs in Europe. I appreciate that I brought this on myself and in hindsight my 1st foray into the Faroe Islands shouldn't have been with a Tier 4 club, but you know what I'm like and it almost feels like a different save if I'm honest. People must look at me playing 13 seasons in Faroe Islands and not winning the top title and think I'm mad, but I really think it has allowed me to form a basis for my Managerial character in the game. This is an area I've not really delved into too much because so often I just stick with the 1 club. This is different though and although I currently only have a National A licence and 1.5 reputation, I can see scope in the immediate future for this to change.

To those of you who get frustrated with saves, please use this as an example that sometimes you just need to push through and let the save grow on you. It would have been so easy to just finish this and go somehwere else but can you imagine how I feel now that I'm playing in the Royal League and in Europe. Honestly, it's brilliant. :kriss:

Icelandic National Team production

This is often 1of the 1st things I look at when moving to a new club, (players previously produced by the Academy), but because I made the decision, (even before joining), that I would be signing players, it suddenly got pushed down the order of importance  and I never got around to it.

c7fec6b45a8f1e670aac164ca4dd401f.png

Róbert Ísak Jónsson is a centre-half playing in Norway. He wasn't actually a product of our Academy, but spent his formative years here so is classed as HG at club. Just for the record, I wouldn't re-sign this player if I was playing Youth Only, but could in this part of the save.

Patrekur Leifsson is a proper legend and has earned 100+ Caps. He's had a hell of a career and while it's unlikely I will be able to being him back as a player, I certainly hope to get him back at the club in a staff capacity, (assuming I'm still here when he retires).

Viktor Már Kristjánsson screams out DLF to me, (now that I know what I'm looking for), and just look at some of those loan fees! He's had a really interesting career and is in his 4th Country, (speaking 5 languages).

I wonder who else there is knocking about who we have produced? Have scouted some of these so we can have a better look, but we don't have the finds to sign anyone so even if there is an attractive transfer option, he will have to wait.

How do you train PPM's?

Well let's have a look at 1 of my U19's who isn't already training 1 and see what I can do......

Ok, here's 1 that I missed previously.

a7c4c899588e96f2ba2c34b99adff542.png

You can see above that he already has 1trait. He already had that when he arrived at the club, and I quite like it for a "playmaker" midfielder, (although less keen for a "destroyer" midfielder. This bloke looks more like a playmaker than a destroyer so that's fine.

ff4d202271a046a0dd17ce107905996b.png

If we go to Developing - Training, we see this.

31bdc78c16bad58d9e7c317a3e8df399.png

There are 2 different sections I want to look at here.

The 1st is player position/role/duty plus additional focus. I haven't done anything to this so far. (Must have missed it when he signed).

fbd7b7c8d877a710262eb22e5ccb9384.png

The 2nd allows me to suggest a PPM for him to learn. I'm a big fan of training PPM's and it's probably the single biggest reason I play full-gat rather than FMC, (yes, even ahead of Youth Intakes).

8c43cd9632c97ed94b791b660abce7f5.png

1st of all I want to give him a Position/Role/Duty training. Although I will be mainly playing him as a DLP(s) in the MC line, I don't actually want to train him in that role. The reason for that is that it leaves too many gaps in his development. Instead I train him as a RPM(s) which gives him a more rounded development, (in my opinion). Please note that training is NOT an area that I'm strong in, so this is my opinion rather than fact. I say a lot of stuff in my threads that I know to be true. This is NOT one of them. (If i'm wrong by the way, feel free to educate me. I'm more than happy to learn bits and pieces where I have a knowledge gap). I've given him extra focus on passing, which covers vision, passing and technique, and that will be perfect for what I want.

6fc128dcb6cdb629f2c48a756a59f799.png

The other thing I never change is the Intensity levels. I always leave it as automatic, (which the round circle to the left of "Normal Intensity" indicates. What I do change though is the intensity itself. I add "Double Intensity" to the option on the far right. Other than that I leave it as I found it.

cd4b92d93e5d4e54be84ae8dbca13f84.png

Getting back to the player, now I want to look at his PPM's so to do that I use this drop-down menu.

835cf7f5ec2f06888791f15c88c701b7.png

I only have 1 member of staff who's opinion I can ask and there are 5 different sub sections that contain different types of PPM's. I want to use the passing section so when I click on that I get a pop-up menu like this. There are a few different options here and 1 I really like for my central midfielders is "switch possession to the other flank". I attack down both flanks and this encourages my playmaker to play the ball wide rather than keeping it central.

91febaad60528785213c710c33cefef6.png
e676f3b695ddc58f17dbdceab3d01949.png

More than that though, rather than just encouraging the playmaker to pass wide, (remember the word switch was used in the title), it encourages the playmaker to pass to the opposite flank and really stretch the play. This is my single favourite PPM for central midfielders, (and I even quite like my destroyers to have it where possible).

bf8faf6586e4febed150e4d8364578c0.png

So in this case that's the option I choose for this player, the U19 Manager agrees and he immediately starts the training. Had the U19 manager not agreed with me, I would have insisted. If the player was lacking in technique or passing ability then the staff member might have said that it wasn't appropriate and at that stage I have the option to either over-rule him or ask what he suggests as a potential PPM.

1fec2e915cd9bdd5d34944859035d797.png

Hope that helps. Apologies if I'm telling you stuff you already know.

That's REALLY frustrating, (and that's why I don't like using edited databases), but I'm going to completely embrace it and just continue regardless. As it happens, it's probably a blessing in disguise because the fixtures are scheduled for ridiculously busy period where we will "hopefully" be playing European football. This will probably benefit us even it is really annoying.

The only workaround I have found for this is that you drop the player to the U19's, set the new PPM to training and then immediately put the player back in the Senior squad. The training still continues and the player doesn't seem to get the hump as long as you move them back on the same day.

Season 18. Ungmennafélagið Stjarnan. Iceland. Úrvalsdeild.

We had never triggered this achievement previously because the seasons were short and because we kept losing in Europe. Despite having a player shown a straight red card after only 17 minutes, we still secured the draw that meant we made it to 30 games unbeaten.

Úrvalsdeild. I thought we were going to romp the league this season, but despite only losing 1 league game all season, we still went into the last game not guaranteed of the title. Anything less than a 5 goal thrashing would see us retain the title, (and complete a quadruple), but I was resting all 10 outfield players because we had a European game 3 days later that I had targeted in the hope of us finishing 3rd in the Euro Cup Groups and therefore qualifying for Knockout football. We drew 0-0 and that will do me nicely thanks. A tiny bit frustrated that we didn't go unbeaten, but when you see the fixture pile-up we had, you will understand how we lost one. On the other hand, FH will be enormously frustrated that they only lost 2 games all season and still didn't win the league.

Summary. Wow. What a tumultuous season. We won all 4 domestic competitions, losing only once in 35 games in doing so. We got to the Champions League Playoff. (and lost), meaning that we dropped into the Euro Cup Group stage, and then finished 3rd there meaning that we dropped again, this time into the knockout stages of the Euro Conference. The Royal League might be flawed in terms of registration, but I still love it.

8ee7f2e821ca793182b5f0867e0fd241.png

Mistakes. Wow I've made a lot of mistakes this season.

  • GK's. I'm not sure how exactly, but we have somehow ended up with only 2 GK's at the club. 1 of them is on loan and the other is a 16 year old from the intake last year and he was injured for the 1st Royal League game so we had to play with a grey GK.
  • Transfers in general were really poor. Not so much this season, because I have been more on the ball, but certainly last season where I just didn't sign anyone because I'm so used to playing Youth Only and unfortunately while the facilities are decent, they aren't decent if your goal is to win stuff rather than just either get to the top league and stay there.
  • Contracts. I was so excited last season, (yes really), with winning the tight race for the league title that went almost to the wire, that I never looked at expiring contracts and as a result we lost players on a free that I would have otherwise have kept. Most of them were ageing players so it's not a disaster, but there was at least 1 good young prospect that we lost and our 2nd best player went too.
  • Wages. In my rush to breathe new life into the squad, (after a season of complete inactivity), I think I went a bit mad and signed too many players, causing us to overspend significantly. I think what happened is that I signed players who's contracts were expiring, but they didn't arrive until February, and then I got all panicked when the League Cup started in January and signed more players, (that were surplus to requirements when the Jan signings arrived). I'm basically gambling that because they have given me a 2 year deal, (actually it's 27 months left right now but will be 2 years at the end of the season), they will overlook by poor financial management because our on-pitch performances have been so good, (but we will have to wait and see on that because it's early days yet). I'm usually really on the ball with regards to finances, (because it's usually the only thing that can scupper me), but on this occasion I have made big mistakes. Because of the over-spend, I can't actually sign anyone for next season now and that's a bit of a problem now that my "forward-thinking" head has taken over from my "panicked head" which in turn took over from my "youth only" head.
  • Squad size and balance. When I realised that we were significantly over-spending, (£35,763 on a £27,875 budget...), I then panicked some more and sent perhaps too many players out on loan in an attempt to reduce the over-spend. Selecting the Royal League squad, (for the 1st game anyway), was fine apart from GK. I just let my Ass Man do it in the end because we had too many options if anything. I'm registering the squad for the 1st Champions League qualifying game right now and to be honest I have no idea how we will do with the HG requirements. Actually, European registration wasn't as bad as I feared and we were able to register 24 players, (only 1 GK), leaving us 1 short. We actually ended up with 7x HG at club players and 11x HG at Nation players. If I stay here for a few seasons I will obviously have to look at this and be careful who I sell/release in terms of HG or not, but that's better than it might have been.

That was a great season, especially in Europe!

It really was. The season just kept getting better and better. We would have completely dominated domestically had I sorted out the squad the season before, but as it was we got pretty lucky, (really lucky), with injuries and pulled off some great performances in Europe, (although we also got our arses handed to us a couple of times).

The save has just accelerated at a huge level.

New GK. Apr 2038

We didn't have a decent GK at the club when I arrived and I have had the same on loan GK here for the 1st 2 years I was here. Jón Þórhallsson was the man and I tried to sign him on a free at the end of his contract but he wasn't interested. He wanted to play for a bigger club.........:idiot:

b2a2ca4db909f62fb2c19474006bdf06.png

0187f7bf0ffe3e13268cb379bc51651c.png

I call him an idiot, but it's actually worked out well for him in that he's got a move to Sweden. The only problem is that he's not 1st choice and I would have paid him more than he is on there to stay. I've just realised that we loaned him from a Norwegian club rather than an Icelandic club. I actually didn't realise that until now because the DoF did the deal to bring him in.

So although we're still looking for a permanent GK, I haven't managed to sign one and there are only 2 at the club, (just like there was last year), only now the experienced loanee has been replaced by a 16 year old product of the Academy.

73540715a614540d9e6f3d457c6dc79c.png

(37e) Guð Haraldsson had to play the final European games of last season because they followed on to this season and the loanee GK had left. He did ok and he will keep the gloves until I can find a permanent GK.

He played 1 league game and 2 European games last season, and so far this season he has played 8 Cup games and 7 European games, (and I think Royal league games are lumped under European). He had already scored a penalty for us but did this today.

Fixture congestion

I forgot to mention this last year. I think it's fair to say we had a little bit of fixture congestion.

9 games in July and another 9 games in August followed by a whopping 11 games in August.

I think the only thing I have seen to rival that was the very end of the season in N.Ireland when you are still in all the Cups and still playing in Europe, but I think that's only a single month when it gets really mental. This was just........

Mate, never thought that the team I support would show up in any sort of capacity on this site (Falkenbergs FF)

You will probably be seeing more of them because I plan in playing in Sweden at some point.

You might appreciate this. It appears as if the 30's are going to be better than the 20's.

Facilities. I had to argue for both the Junior Coaching and Youth Recruitment upgrades, but managed to get it agreed in the end. I was surprised that the board agreed to both the Training Facilities and the Youth Facilities upgrades without batting an eyelid, especially when the total cost is £3M and we only have £2.6M in the bank. Today is 4th May 2038 and they are starting work on both on 9th May, NEXT YEAR, so that's a blessing in disguise. As long as we have another decent season in Europe, (certainly not guaranteed), we should have the money to pay these bills.

Summary. We've done the domestic quadruple for the 2nd consecutive season. I won't divulge how Europe has gone this season, but it's pretty similar to last season so it's been relatively successful. 2 domestic quadruples in a row makes me wonder if it's time to move on. I have to keep in mind that this is a Journeyman save after all. I can't leave yet though because we are obviously still in Europe. The other thing to consider is that I've just been sent on a coaching course and will need that to assist me in moving to bogger leagues and clubs.

Transfers. 7 of the 9 players we signed were teenagers and although £575,000 is a lot of money in Iceland, with the income we have generated over the last 2 seasons I felt empowered. With them being so young there is every chance that they will prove "investments" rather than "costs". Bjarki Andrésson 6'3" * was signed from my old club Afturelding, (where I signed him too), although he still thinks that he's a midfielder rather than a centre-half. The player on the list who made the biggest impact is probably Rúnar Jónasson, who scored 6 goals and created 14 assists from the right wing.

So, you definitely fired your HOYD after that intake right?

No. My personal opinion is that the HoYD has an insignificant impact on the CA/PA of the players coming through the Youth Intake. He can influence them "slightly" in other ways, but in terms of actual quality I believe it to be negligible. Basically, sacking the HoYD doesn't fix the problem.

Great read ! tempted to start in Iceland or Faroer myself again with the youth only challenge.. played two seasons with Aalst and i'm in the highest divion after two back to back promotions but the season take me once again.. too long.. i should opt for instant resulting a lot or i'm not getting enough speed and youth intakes in my game :(

your topic is once again a great inspiration :)

Thanks very much.

I personally think that the IR button really benefits people who play the game like I do, but completely understand that it isn't the same for everyone. Some people want to start at a club and do absolutely everything they can to get their chosen club performing at the absolute optimum level and then they lose interest after a few seasons. I do see the attraction in that, but I've generally had a longer-term view with regards to saves. Playing in this way keeps my interest and keeps me coming back. I would still enjoy it with a more short-term approach, but less so. The IR button has really given me the opportunity to play deep into saves that I just wouldn't get playing normally.

That is true, but if i use IR , i'm missing the interaction with my team if i'm nog doing the games myself ( I did instant result with Caley braves from Scotland (French regens only) but i could tell you the names of the first eleven after the first season.. But u can put time in other things like individual training and tracking (in my excell sheets).

A mix could be an option. playing in Iceland, Faroer, Gibraltar (database errors are not fixed yet with the prize money thing) or Wales with IR and playing the most important games (finals) yourself.. could be a way of doing it for me.  And stop putting everything in an excell sheet.. I have 9 sheets with information of every season, things i want to compare.. i should downsize this to one sheet with the most important things and use my sheet for player (youth intake) calculation.. otherwise i'm finished after a few seasons in whatever save i would pick.

European campaign. 2038.

We didn't quite live up to last season's levels where we played knockout football, (albeit in the Euro Conference), after Christmas. When I saw we had drawn Malmö FF in the Champions League Playoff I knew it was going to be a tough ask, but I secretly hoped that we might be able to turn them over. We did ok, but there is obviously still a bit of a gap there between ourselves and the bigger Scandi clubs. When I saw the Euro Cup Group I was gutted that I didn't think we had much of a chance, but was pleasantly surprised to get a win against the Frenchies. The £4.2M total prize money was great again and I think it doesn't really matter which Group Stage we get to, just so long as we get to one of them.

Finland should be next on my list of Nations, but it really depends what becomes available and who takes a chance on me. Obviously, which club I move to will determine whether I will be signing loads of players, signing the occasional player or going fully Youth Only again.

There are no jobs available at the moment but these are the one's most under threat.

The Danish leagues seem out of sync with the other Scandi Nations and where as everyone else is in the close season, right now, Denmark seems to be just coming towards the end of their season now.

This is the type of manager I am seen as. I'm 38 now so I think we are starting to get to get towards the stage where it's at least possible to get a son in the game.

The Finnish league just never seems to work quite right.

I'm a big fan of the first league game of the season clashing with International games, so you're missing 15-20 players (once you're one of the better teams in the league). Or the same happening with the Finnish Cup Final, at the other end of the season.

Or not being able to arrange any friendly games, so if you do manage to remain in Europe beyond Christmas, your first games are played when your players have no match fitness at all.

Damn you, Jimbokav1971 - my therapist said I was doing so well...

This is a really cool but also pretty frustrating part of the game that I have personally never experienced before.

I have seen Interim Managers before, but never while I was in the process of applying for their job. In this instance, the Interim Manager has won 2 and drawn 1 of his 3 games in charge and AC Oulu have rocketed out of the relegation zone.

To be honest, I don't want the job now. The Interim Manager deserves it and so much so in fact that I'm going to name-check him.

This seems like a good fit for me. IF Sylvia are a Pro club in the Swedish 2nd Tier. (Unfortunately they had employed someone the same day I applied I think).

I have applied for the FC Lahti role. They are bottom of the Finnish top Tier, but I don't think I want the job now. Time is running out and I think it is going to be very hard to save them with games running out.

The club that has really caught my eye though is FK Bodø/Glimt of the Norwegian top tier. I think it's obvious why I like them. They might be in trouble at the wrong end of the table, but there are more games in this league so more opportunities to earn points.

In sweden its mostly just the top 2 divisions who are pro, look for a side in the 3rd tier (1st div n/s) who have been relegated in the past 2 seasons as they will be the bigger clubs and more likely to turn pro if promoted.

Lungskille might have been good and their training facilities are ok for sweden.

I feel really sorry for Joni Koivisto.

He's the U20 Manager at the club and was looking after things while the club completed the recruitment process. He won 2 and drew the other of his 3 games in charge, and it means that he took them from 12th place to 9th place. I had assumed that they were just going to give him the job, but they didn't and I'm in. I'm delighted that he's still at the club, (as U20 Manager), and our recent form under him has shown what's possible with this group of players.

Joni has done an amazing job in turning things around and I'm hoping I can continue that. What immediately jumps out at me from the wealth of info I have looked at is that we are at more than 200% of our wage budget, and despite having 6 players in on loan, all of our wage spends seems to be committed through next season too, (which seems a little strange. Despite that, we have £360k in the bank, but my 1st thought is that maybe this is via Director investment or consolidation loans or something like that. We actually only have a very small, (tiny), bank loan, that has almost been repaid, and the Directors haven't invested any money into the club this season. We also haven't sold any players this season, so maybe we can actually afford more money than we are currently spending, and the board are just being conservative.

We've hardly got any staff for a Pro club and I've just placed adverts to fill 14 positions across 10 different roles for the Senior squad alone. I will get to the other squads at some point in the future.

The club is in a hell of a mess and I think I know why. They had the same manager for 10+ years and then the next bloke to come in really struggled. I think there is a good club in here underneath the mess. It just needs to be tidied up, streamlined, (get rid of a lot of players), and focus paid to the important areas, (which is the players who will actually improve us). We have 58 players in total at the club. That might be ok if there were 2 whole intakes on Youth contracts, but that's definitely not the case. There is a lot of dross at the club that needs to be cleared out.

Yeah, I was looking at that. I was thinking if I get sacked, then Swedish Semi-Pro might be where I head next, so I was sort of keeping them on the back-burner.

Denmark will be last on the list I think.

I almost went Norway last night.
