Help with dyche tactic/defensive football

cautious, more direct passing, pass into space, early crosses, be more expressive, higher tempo, counter, regroup, distribute quickly, force opposition outside, lower line of engagement

Results:

How can i make this better defensively? My aim is to play proper lower league football, defend low, direct passes, goals from counters and set pieces. Anytime i tried such a tactic it just falls apart completely.

Counter on a Cautious mentality won't yield many counters 

A SV(A) in the middle of the park & a WB(A) as part of your back 4 aren't defensive solid roles

Lower line of engagement on a Cautious mentality will just give the attacking incentive to the opposition, as well as Pass into Space will likely hand the ball over  

Be more Expressive doesn't scream defensive solidarity to me  

The only time I would use Cautious, is when trying to create a Possession tactic but even then I'd push the lines up the park. It's about finding a balance with your roles & TIs, the idea is to stay solid but still have various ways to score, even then, you need to know your GK & defensive players are solid enough to be able to defend for 90 minutes because if the opposition have better attacking players, they will break through

It's true, although the OP did not say he wants to play a counter-attacking style 

From how he described what he wants, I would assume he wants rather passive defensive football with counter-attacks as an additional tactical tool (when an opportunity is there).

Honestly, I would not recommend playing low-block in lower leagues, simply because such style requires players that are really good at defending - and not just defenders but also midfielders. Burnley would have never been able to play low block if their midfield were not so good at helping the defense thanks to their good defense-related attributes (positioning, tackling, bravery, work rate, teamwork etc.).

Before you design the tactic, make sure that you have the players first. Burnley plays a system that requires specialist players that fit their system. Expecting any team to be able to apply that system immediately is unrealistic and even with a perfect tactic your system will still fail because you do not have the players to execute it.
