[FM21] The Grand Tour of Britain

Having not done a career journey on here for many years I have decided to start a new one from here. With this tour my initial set up is all of England and Scotland only as playable as I want this first one to be a tour of Britain. Also I have chosen who my first club is as they are the team I support and they are Derby County however I will make decisions for the right of my career so I could end up any where in England or Scotland.

My updates will normally be every two months and I want this to be realistic so I can only sign players found by my scouts, recommendations or DOF identify. To make you all aware also before I started I have put Steve McClaren at Derby as technical director and Director of Football as second roll.

So here we go!

On arrival at Derby the following objectives have been set..

PRE-SEASON

Headlines

  • Derby appoint former Manchester United Coach Paul McGuiness as Page's Number 2 at Derby
  • Curtis Davies leaves Derby for AEK for 21k
  • Scott Carson makes loan move to Man City permanent 475k deal
  • Adam Idah arrives on loan from Norwich for season

So it was a very brief preseason tour that was not as bad as it could have been

So next update will be end of October and if there is any fun in the transfer window!

Club Vision Update

Manager Thoughts

Well its been a cracking start with some fantastic performances. Adam Idah so far with 6 goals in 8 and is top scorer in the league. Also Jack Clarke who arrived and hit the ground running with 3 goals in 4 games 2 assists and a 7.06 average. The issue at the moment at the club is the large amount of injuries that the club currently has 4 first teamers injured as some have returned but these include Jozwiak this was the reason I bought in Clarke when he got identified by the scouts.

I am not actually bothered about the league cup exit as the league form has been amazing. We need everyone fit as we have 13 fixtures in November and December. I would be happy with still being in touch with the playoffs as we start January. So next update will be for November and December.

Club Vision Update

spacer.pngspacer.png

Manager Thoughts

Oh my word that went worse than I really thought that it would. November was hard with the start of December. What has become obvious to me is that there is no real depth in this club. The injuries have been killing me and through the difficult period I have not had the same team twice. Once they started clearing up and I got some consistency then results started to come back my way. Special mention to Andy Marshall in goal who is the only player to play every game. Adam Idah is the leagues top scorer with 17 but January is going to be massive as I attempt to bring in more quality.

There are Premier League jobs available at Aston Villa and Burnley. Also Nottingham Forest have fired Chris Hughton.

Next Update

I will come back at the end of January as this is going to be a key month for me and the club.

Still in a play-off place, @Paggioram. Good luck 🍀 in January. Hope you have a good month.

Are you tempted by any of the vacancies?

Cheers @Stuniverse Not yet as I said I want to keep this realistic and still first season and doing as well as I am I would not be looking to move. This challenge at Derby is one I am enjoying the project.

Manager Thoughts

This has been a real challenge of a month as the injuries strike again. There have been some amazing signing Phil Jones arrival just before Huddersfield and a debut goal. However this loan signing has caused massive issues at the club as Mike Te Wierik is saying that I bought him in to replace him and even though I told him that was not the case he was not happy and next other players came in and complained (sigh). Then after the Huddersfield loss as I was not happy in he walked again to complain about my team talks. I think in summer he will be moving on.

I am also wondering what to do this summer with Wayne Rooney he is on 50k per week but he has been great when playing so this decision needs to decide what to do depending on league. Also need to see how he develops as a coach.

I do think top 2 are gone and the next 4 months are massive so lets see where we are end of March.

Automatic promotion might be looking a bit far, but the Play-Offs are going to happen if the injuries can calm down.

I really hope so @abulezzI am really thinking over overhaul of medical team in summer as this has been insane. Never had a injury plagued season like this.

Manager Thoughts

Well injuries are really doing my head in so next season my medical team is having an overhaul it really needs it. Our Feb was so up and down again due to lack of consistency. So I did some minor tweaks to my formation and we are on a roll in March and have pulled back Brentford to 5 points.

So lets talk about April........ My First game is Brentford. Win that it turns up the pressure and I know that they have a game in hand but also my last match of the season Bournemouth. This end of the season is going to be massive.

At this point I am not planning for next season simply because I am not sure where we are going to be. So see you all for end of the season.

Still looking good for at least playoffs, @Paggioram. Win against Brentford and you cut the gap to a mere two points, lose and they stretch the gap to eight points which, with seven games to go, would probably end your chance of automatics. Good luck 🍀

You mentioned you’d tweaked your tactics. What tactics are you using?

Cheers @Stuniverse This is going to the wire but looking forward to what happens and how it finally plays out. I am playing a 41221 same as I have since the beta it is the shape I like. All I have tweaked is the tempo and the passing thats all. Just needed to change something to try and kick us out of the slump and it worked.

Play-Off Final

spacer.png

spacer.pngspacer.png

Manager Thoughts

That's actually annoyed me as we were the better team for the 90 mins and we had the better chances. I think if we score that Pen then we go on to win this. So now I need to sit down and think about next season and what do I do. I need to decide how I want to push on for the next season. I very much doubt Adam Idah will be back as he will be a Premier League striker and after this season he deserves a shot. I am not sure if any of the loan signings will be back next season but we will have to see.

This close season and the next pre-season are going to be huge and the press are already talking about the chairman Mel Morris willing to listen to offers.

That’s tough to take, with a missed penalty as well. Would Idah have made the difference do you think had he not been ineligible against his parent club.

Your Derby County must be well placed to mount a serious promotion challenge next season. Good luck 🍀 in the summer.

Pre-Season 2021-22

Well this was a more interesting Pre-Season than I was actually expecting. Lots of questions were answered so before I get onto transfers just to go through my thoughts for the summer. There were things I was not happy about last season even finishing 3rd so I have decided and designed a new formation for the team this season. I had 41m to spend and spent no where near so if needed I will have a decent budget in January.

I then went through the side and looked at the squad and how many appearances they made last season and some big names have been shown the door. Then there was Rooney. Well Rooney was offered a new deal but is now just a coach and on nearly 48k less wage. There is one potential signing that has not been completed in time for the end of pre season that my scouts been going mental for from the prem who is cheap and also taking a massive pay cut but I know you guys will frown but he will be discussed next update.

Also one of my strikers is favourite for the golden boot.

Transfers

Ok lets start with the transfer I promised you....

Well it did not happen as fee was agreed, wage agreed but he could not get a work permit and was not willing to sign without one so we have missed out on Joelinton he was going to take a 70% pay cut and would have been signed for 2m but oh well we move on.

Been a decent start and only league result that annoyed me was the 0-2 loss to Forest and I would have liked to have beat Sunderland but yet again penalties cause me issues. I do think we are playing better and feel stronger but Watford and West Brom are really strong and are going to be difficult to catch. Not much more to say so we carry on the challenge and the fight ahead of us.

Manager Thoughts

Amazing last couple of Months and this team is actually on fire and we are looking much stronger. When I changed the formation to a 4411 in the summer then I did not see this coming. There is still a long way to go but the next phase is the most important and challenging with the run in December and January there is also the small matter of the FA Cup and Everton.

I need to look into if I need to add in January but I am happy with the fact Adam Idah is joining full time in January.

So why did I turn down the new contract. This is simple I said I was doing this realistic and my thoughts are I will sign a new contract if the new owner offers me one as they are going to be the bosses. I do not want to force them to keep me because I am too expensive to sack if they dont want me. So I carry on the job and see whats next.

Neither of those sound great, and we definitely don't want the one who's going to replace you.

December 2021 / January 2022

Manager Thoughts - Part 1

Why am I starting with manager thoughts because this last two months have been interesting and I wanted to give you a little overview as these two months have been challenging as in December I lost Adam Idah and his replacement Morgan Whittaker to decent length injuries but the January transfer window took some unexpected changes that I did not see coming inc. a player leaving who is a top younger player who was very much a first team regular but arriving the return of an Icon of the club.

Transfers

Out

  • David Marshall - Bristol Rovers - 5.75k
  • Louie Sibley - Borussia Dortmund - 25m

In

  • Adam Idah - Norwich - Initial fee 12m
  • Maarten Vandevoordt - Genk - 17.5m

Then the final signing - The return of an Icon

  • Will Hughes - Watford - 10.25m

Manager Thoughts Part 2

So the loss of Sibs is huge as he has been a massive part of this club but not going to stand in his way when Dortmund willing to offer 25m. Also the signing of Vandervoort is massive as he is 19 years old and a massive upgrade in keeper. I found him through my new number one scout in the first season I had Joe Royle as scout but he retired in the summer and I put and advert for a new scout and one that surprised me appeared. That man is the former manager of Liverpool and recently left Crystal Palace in Roy Hodgson. He arrives as a normal scout and has been finding some gems none more so that my new number one.

I am so focused on the league that the FA cup did not bother me but I really want promotion and if Will Hughes hits the ground running we will be a force. Feb and March are going to be the biggest months of our season.

Well the wobble and implosion has started and we are starting to slip with only one month to go. Not kidding I am worried that another play off battle is in the future. I mean looking at what we have done this season and the hard work I really hope that this is not going to happen.

spacer.png

Only thing of interest away from the slide is Wayne Rooney. It looks like he might be leaving as he is linked with Everton and West Brom job. So here we go the massive last month...

What a season and what a story that ended up being. It came down to the last game of the season when I was sitting 2nd and could have been title or playoff but to end up with the title is amazing. There is a lot of work in the new season and an amazing challenge that I cant wait for.

Really think I have a great young team that will be great in the new season and the real challenge of the premier league.

Pre Season 2022/23

Well that was harder than I thought it was going to be. That has been a difficult transfer window so far as players that would seriously improve us that my scouts have mentioned do not want to come to me until I am established in the Premier League. We say goodbye to the following whose contract expired and did not want to sign a new deal Jack Marriott, Jahmal Hector-Ingram and Kornell McDonald. So what transfers happened...

Transfers out:

  • Jason Cummings - Houston - Loan with option to make perm

Transfers In:

  • Alfie Gilchrist - Chelsea - Free
  • Ricky-Jade Jones - Peterborough - 5m
  • Siriki Dembele - Peterborough - 4m (raising to 4.8m with clauses)

I already knew this season was going to be a challenge so if we can surprise people maybe in Jan options will appear. Pre Season friendlies have been very good in my opinion. Also though I was able to renew the loans of Matt Clarke and Japhat Tanganga

spacer.png

Just want to point out that was a Dormund first team not a youth team so the likes of Sibley and Billingham played.

So first two months of league are going to be a challenge as it features games against Everton, Liverpool, Man Utd, Man City and Leicester.
