Hi, looking to buy a new laptop as my old one has finally given up the ghost. Will mostly be used to play Football manager and then just low level general use (browsing etc). Probably looking at a budget of between £300-£500 but also don't want to find myself needing a new one in 12 months time as it can't handle FM 25. Dont really know anything about computers so any help appreciated. Also, saw this one below heavily discounted but might just be terrible for what I'm looking for (and never even heard of the make before). Cheers in advance

Definitely avoid that one. Celeron processors are not good. To get one that I'd be confident can handle FM25, taking into account we don't know the system specs yet, may require looking at refurbished ones with that budget. Is that something you'd be happy with?

Thanks for the response. Yeah not against a refurbished one if its from a trusted site. I did notice you recommended the below for just over the £500 mark so would that be my best bet?

Edit - just noticed that specific one is sold now

That one is the best I can find under £500. Should still be fine for FM25 I reckon.

Check the terms, I'm assuming you're thinking about accidental damage, which a warranty likely wouldn't cover.  A warranty would more be about parts going wrong. You'd need a gadget insurance policy for accidental damage in all likelihood.

Further to what Kevhamster said, often individual PC parts will have a longer warranty (the power supply for instance) so even if not covered by the retailer you might still be able to get a replacement later for a specific part if needed

Hello all,

I'm in the market for a new laptop for FM24, and other games.

Games I play regularly:

- FM23 (FM24)

- Planet Zoo

- Cities: Skylines

- Cyberpunk 2077

- Fallout 4

- Red Dead Redemption

Budget is around £1200 realistically. I've got a HP Omen which I bought in 2017 which has the following in it:

- Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz   2.81 GHz

- 16GB Ram

- Nvidia GTX 1050

It plays most games on fairly decent specs but not fantastic so I'd be hoping for a fairly substantial upgrade if I'm gonna buy something new.

I don't really know much about laptops beyond the basics so appreciate any suggestions / help.

Cheers!

Something like this would meet the recommended specs for the games listed, of which Cyberpunk is the most demanding.  Plus it should have sufficient storage for it all!  RDR2 and Cyberpunk are both pretty hefty install sizes.

Hi all,

Looking for some advice - after a new laptop for FM24. Won't be used for anything else really except maybe the old film on Netflix when travelling something like that.

Play in 2D classic - never been a fan of 3d, like to have quite a few leagues loaded up to make journeyman saves possible, budget is up to £650 maximum.

Would the two laptops below be any good please? And could you recommend anything else in the price range?

https://www.currys.co.uk/products/hp-envy-x360-15.6-refurbished-2-in-1-laptop-intel-core-i5-512-gb-ssd-silver-very-good-condition-10247389.html

https://www.currys.co.uk/products/asus-vivobook-16-x1605za-16-laptop-intel-core-i7-512-gb-ssd-silver-10251394.html

Noticed also Amazon Prime Day coming up - anyone ever managed to get a good laptop for FM on offer through that?

Cheers

I'd go for this: https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1406500?clickPR=plp:3:60

I've always thought Prime Day was a bit of a gimmick, not sure how good the deals actually are.  And as good as Amazon is for finding all sorts of stuff, its filtering options when it comes to computing stuff doesn't work very well at all so it can be difficult to find what you're actually after.

Thanks for the quick reply Kev.

I've never had an AMD processor and my knowledge isn't the best to be able to understand the technical info when I try and compare.

How would this processor stack up against the 12th gen processors in the links I sent please?

It does rank higher on notebookcheck

But, that is kinda moot if you can't get hold of it!

That one is a Ryzen 5, still ranks higher than the Intel chips:

It was listed as a clearance model, so I don't think it will to be honest.  You'll probably be better off just going for the one from Ebuyer in case that sells out as well!

Hi all,

Going round in circles and need some help.

Currently using late 2013 macbook which is on verge of burning a hole through my table and decided to try to future proof myself to best extent within budget...

Got myself to 4 models and seeking option please. Ideally want mux or advanced optimus and think all 4 have and not sure between ryzen or intel for future fm.

Option 1 £1665 from Dell after disc

DELL G16, i9-13900HX , RTX4070 2x16GB DDR5 4800 , 1TB, 240hz

Option 2 £1330 from dell after disc

DELL G16 i7-13650HX, RT4060  2x16GB DDR5 4800 , 1TB, 240hz

Option 3 £1611 from Lenovo

Legion Pro 5 Gen 8 2023, Ryzen 9 7945HX, RTX4060, 2X16GB DDR5 5200, 1TB, 240hz

Option 4 £1349 from overclockers

A16 TUF A17 (can't find F version), Ryzen 9 7940HS, RTX4070, 2X8 GB DDR5, 512GB, 144Hz

Each one has different plus and minus and I'm not that switched on to know what benefit one has over other to work out best value for money or best to last a while.

Above is how the CPUs stack up against each other according to https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html?

So, I'd personally go for option 1 or option 3, based on the CPU.

Also taking into account GPU performance, then option 1 is the overall winner, although if FM is the only game you're playing that in itself shouldn't make a difference.  Even though we know FM25 will see increased system requirements, I can't imagine the RTX 4060 having any issues with FM at max settings.

In summary, I'd go for option 1 if you play other modern games alongside FM, and if FM is the only game you play then I'd go for option 3.

Anyone used the Samsung Galaxybook3 Pro 5G for football manager.

Work are supplying a laptop for travelling and this seems the best on the list.

It is the model with 8GB RAM and that’s my biggest concern with it

For FM23 & FM24, it will be absolutely fine.  Harder to know about FM25 as we don't know how much the system requirements will increase.  I suspect it would still be fine but may need the graphics settings turned down.

So I'm buying a new PC for FM24, but undecided on CPU. I could go down the Intel route with the 14th gen coming out this month but it's the end of the socket. I could go with AMD then still be able to upgrade the CPU in 2 years time. Currently considering the 7800X3D, 7950x and the 14700k/14900k. Thoughts?

I plan to play other games on PC now, not just FM. I know the 7800X3D is the best CPU for gaming but I'm playing at 4K resolution so it doesn't matter as much. I'm more focused on getting a good CPU for FM and it still being good enough for other games.

According to that the Intel outperforms the Ryzen as things stand, so it really comes down to whether you want the best option now, or are more interested in the upgrade further down the road.

If it was your money and your budget? Which would you choose mate? Is the processor the only real difference between them? What about graphics and the makes - is there much difference between Lenovo and ASUS?

I have a voucher I can use for curry’s so the price difference will end up being negligible.

really appreciate the help

I'd go for the one at Currys. As well as a better CPU based on those benchmarks, based on the info on the AMD website it looks the integrated GPU is a bit better as well.

Or, you could go for this and have a much newer and more powerful CPU: https://www.laptopstation.co.uk/products/hp-laptop-14s-dq2512na-11th-generation-core-i5-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-14-fhd-screen?_pos=2&_fid=aba903e1f&_ss=c

You have the option with both to increase the RAM to 16GB for an extra £59.

As per the OP, we don't comment on how many leagues you can play comfortably with any given setup, as the processing speed is subjective.

However, the i9-13900F is one of the best CPU's currently available so it'll handle it better than most things you can currently get.

Hi Kev,

Firstly, thank you for your awesome service! :) I’ve just had one of these go bang (motherboard) after 3 good years of it, thanks to your recommendation… https://shorturl.at/duxS3

I’m now looking to replace it, hopefully for no more than the £500-600 ballpark really, or less if good value is available.

FM24 (and beyond) is my main benchmark, and I tend to watch matches in 3D. I don’t play many other games if any - the rest of the time, it is used for streaming sports (HDMI port and Chromecast ability helpful) and Office applications.

Any recommendations very welcome and gratefully received. Thank you.

As we're needing to take into account the fact that FM25 will see increased system requirements, I am going with the assumption that a dedicated graphics card is going to be needed for the 3D settings until SI tells us otherwise, so this does keep it at the top of your stated budget:

Thanks Kev, and for the quick reply! I’m happy to make that assumption, as I wouldn’t want to buy now only to be caught out by FM25 in 12 months.

I like buying from a well-known retailer like that, but it’s currently showing out of stock. Do you know of any similar alternatives at all?

Apologies for asking twice, but with my situation, I’m 100% laptop-less at the moment! Thanks!

Damn, it must have just sold out as it didn't show as out of stock when I linked it!

Hi, could anyone tell me if this laptop would be good enough for running FM24 and beyond (albeit FM25 min spec not know)

https://www.johnlewis.com/acer-aspire-5-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-processor-8gb-ram-1tb-ssd-15-6-inch-full-hd/p110507725

If not, then happy for recommendations for up to £600ish.  Would be used for FM, internet browsing and watching tv series/films.
Thanks.

I’m coming back to FM for this year after not playing since 2021 and I need a new laptop, haven’t got the first clue where to start looking. I’m looking to spend between 300 - 450. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd go for this: https://www.currys.co.uk/products/asus-vivobook-15-x1500ea-15.6-laptop-intel-core-i5-512-gb-ssd-black-10240161.html
