FM24 - PC/Laptop advice thread *** PLEASE READ OPENING POST BEFORE POSTING ***

Hi, I am moving to Vietnam in a few months to teach and will be giving up my work laptop (used for FM) I have been playing FM on it for three or four years and sometimes now it is beginning to get slow or lag, can hear the turbo kicking in, can't really use on my lap as it burns!!! 

Spec is: 

• Dell 7280
• Intel Core i5-6300(U) CPU @ 2.4GHZ 
• 8GM RAM
• Intel HD Graphics 620 (I think but am not 100% sure)

 

I'll also be using the new laptop to make lesson plans (powerpoint, word) and to watch netflix, skygo. Listen to spotify while on the game.

Having just done some googling, I appreciate I may struggle to find a laptop with similar spec at a likeable cost, but can't understand why the performance is poor at the moment.

Budget for a laptop is £500 more or less, not keen on the outlay as understandably trying to save before the move, however it really is a necessity. Vietnam is a long flight. 

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou!

One of the results of boredom during the lockdown is, that I want to play FM again after many years without playing computer games at all. My current laptop is almost dead though, so I need a new one. I have more or less no knowledge about computers in general, so don't have a clue what to buy.

 

Do you want to watch Netflix? Yes.
Do you play other games? No.
Do you want to edit vidoes? No.
Listen to music, spotify? Yes.
Do you edit photos? No.

 

My other requirements are rather simple - it shall not be a Mac (had one at work once, and don't want to use one ever again) and FM21 shall run smooth on it. It doesn't need to be the cheapest option around, but ofcourse I don't want to overpay for things I don't need.

What's your budget?  It's much easier to give a recommendation if I know how much you're able to spend!

Ideally don't want to next laptop for at least another 4/5 years.

The benchmarking sites, such as the above, show that the 4500U has a significant performance jump over the 3500U.

If you can afford one with the 4500U I would seriously consider it.

No, go for the HP.  Must admit, I had no idea until @Brother Ben's post yesterday that the HP store had such good deals.  I can't see any red flags on the HP listing, so at that price I say snap it up.

Both processors will do a fine job with FM.  The Medion comes with a dedicated graphics card, which will give more flexibility for gaming, but the Ryzen has very good integrated graphics which will play FM at medium settings (possibly higher).

If you can afford the extra, I'd still be inclined to go for the Medion if it were me, but if you'd prefer to save the money and FM is the only game you're going to play then you're not going to go wrong with the Ryzen based one either - as long as you make sure you go for the one with the 4500U.  There is a significant jump in performance from the 3500U to the 4500U.

Yep, that'll be good.  Very good processor (Ryzen 5 4500U) and integrated graphics which will handle medium settings or higher.  Good price as well - go for it.

No idea, because that doesn't tell me what the specs of your machine are, and the Lenovo site suggests that the model number in question had a range of different configurations.

To share this, type "dxdiag" in the Windows search bar, and click the "run command" which comes up.

You should get a window come up which looks like this:

Click the "save all information" button and upload the .txt file that it saves from that.

Any of those would be quite an improvement on the current one.  The CPU's are quite a lot better.

It'll run the game.  Processing won't be particularly quick, but certainly won't be awful.  Decent integrated graphics capability as well.  Probably as good as you can get for the price.

Thank you, it seems that I can only get 10% off, so is it worth paying about £40 extra to get number 1 with 14” FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, 300 nits instead of the Argos one with 15.6” FHD (1920 x 1080) TN, 250 nits?

That bit in bold means how bright the screen is - you'll be paying £40 for a brigher, but slightly smaller screen.  So, entirely down to what your preference is there.

TN panels have a better response time, as well as a cheaper price tag, while IPS panels have better viewing angles and color reproduction for a little extra cash.

Hey Chaps, looking to get back into Football Manager for the first time in years.

In regards to budget, I'm looking at around £800 for a laptop ideally, however I could be swayed to a higher budget, if the performance justifies it.

I want something that is future proofed to a a degree, so presumably a Ryzen 5/7 or Intel 7 would be the best option.

In regards to other uses, we'll be using it for video streaming and potentially other gaming depending on it's quality - this isn't a deal-breaker though.

It largely depends on what other games you want to play.  The CPU in this one is a bit better, but the graphics card is quite a bit weaker.  So, it'll be a bit better for FM, but may struggle with some other modern games.

Being completely honest the performance of FM is more important to me than other games, happy to play some old Scholl RTS's and less graphic hungry games so to speak.

Ok, in that case I'd suggest the one you linked to then, as the 1650 is more than enough for FM and older games.

Also is £200 a good asking price for one of these?

does that sound ok or about right for the amount of countries/leagues?

 

can you add/remove nations as you play so you can manage in they countries? so just say i load scotland as playabale and others as view only, can i then make them playable and apply for jobs in them as and when i choose?

I'm in the process of buying a new laptop and have the Huawei Matebook X Pro 2020 in my sights (https://consumer.huawei.com/uk/laptops/matebook-x-pro-2020/specs/)

The Spec I'm looking at is as follows (also see above hyperlink)

• 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10510U Processor, 1.8 GHz 4 cores, Turbo up to 4.9 GHz
• 16 GB LPDDR3 2133 MHz
• NVIDIA® GeForce® MX250 (2GB GDDR5)
• 1 TB NVMe PCIe SSD

I only play FM Gaming-wise and the usual browsing/MS Office etc.

Will this be sufficient to run FM21 smoothly without taking forever to complete a season;

• 2D Match Engine (90% of the time)
• 7/8 Leagues

I would appreciate any feedback and would also consider alternatives (This Huawei Model will cost me £1199.99 so anything around that figure)

For what its worth, I don't really like the look or bulkiness of Gaming laptops, but wouldn't rule them out if one would provide better performance as a lesser cost.

Hi Adam.

We can't fairly comment on how quick processing will be, as this is quite subjective and what I find acceptable may not be acceptable to you.

In terms of the spec, it certainly meets the minimum clock speed for FM21 - it is below the clock speed for FM20 and earlier, but it should certainly run the game regardless.

Should also handle the 3D match engine without issue seeing as it has a dedicated graphics card.

At the price I'm seeing on the Huawei site, there are likely to be far better value options out there.  I'd also ask if you're specifically looking for a touchscreen model, as I suspect this is one of the reasons it's priced as highly as it is.
