FM24 - PC/Laptop advice thread *** PLEASE READ OPENING POST BEFORE POSTING ***

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am moving to Vietnam in a few months to teach and will be giving up my work laptop (used for FM) I have been playing FM on it for three or four years and sometimes now it is beginning to get slow or lag, can hear the turbo kicking in, can't really use on my lap as it burns!!!

Spec is:

  • Dell 7280
  • Intel Core i5-6300(U) CPU @ 2.4GHZ
  • 8GM RAM
  • Intel HD Graphics 620 (I think but am not 100% sure)

I'll also be using the new laptop to make lesson plans (powerpoint, word) and to watch netflix, skygo. Listen to spotify while on the game.

Having just done some googling, I appreciate I may struggle to find a laptop with similar spec at a likeable cost, but can't understand why the performance is poor at the moment.

Budget for a laptop is £500 more or less, not keen on the outlay as understandably trying to save before the move, however it really is a necessity. Vietnam is a long flight.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou!

I got redirected here from OTF - probably the last post I made in a FM-Forum was over a decade ago :D

One of the results of boredom during the lockdown is, that I want to play FM again after many years without playing computer games at all. My current laptop is almost dead though, so I need a new one. I have more or less no knowledge about computers in general, so don't have a clue what to buy.

Do you want to watch Netflix? Yes.
Do you play other games? No.
Do you want to edit vidoes? No.
Listen to music, spotify? Yes.
Do you edit photos? No.

My other requirements are rather simple - it shall not be a Mac (had one at work once, and don't want to use one ever again) and FM21 shall run smooth on it. It doesn't need to be the cheapest option around, but ofcourse I don't want to overpay for things I don't need.

Thanks in advance :)

What's your budget?  It's much easier to give a recommendation if I know how much you're able to spend!

Thanks for reply, have spent last hour reading through the thread.

Has awesome replies that one too. Can I ask, what's the massive difference between Ryzen 5 3500 and Ryzen 5 4500? Can you recommend any 4500 and is it really worth the extra £?

Ideally don't want to next laptop for at least another 4/5 years.

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-4500U-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-3500U/m1052299vsm760067

The benchmarking sites, such as the above, show that the 4500U has a significant performance jump over the 3500U.

If you can afford one with the 4500U I would seriously consider it.

Worried that this is too cheap at 500? https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=1E6Z9EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB&lang=en-GB&pup_e=1&pup_cid=55877&pup_id=1E6Z9EA%23ABU&gclid=Cj0KCQiArvX_BRCyARIsAKsnTxN-XGtBIFggQQX23nzJpbAHQoa14kvMcuDMy0WIhbreRtDD7dn8KwMaAvvoEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#reviews

Would you recommend the HP (4500) or the earlier link you provided, the Acer from Argos (3500)?

Finding it tough to search specifically by 4500, most search results just return 'AMD ryzen 5' and aren't specific regarding 3500/4500.

No, go for the HP.  Must admit, I had no idea until @Brother Ben's post yesterday that the HP store had such good deals.  I can't see any red flags on the HP listing, so at that price I say snap it up.

Thanks kev. That's one I had in mind. But just came across the honour magic book 14, which you can upgrade to 4500. How would you say that is for £80 less than the Medion?

https://m.hihonor.com/unitedkingdom/product/honor-magicbook-14/

Both processors will do a fine job with FM.  The Medion comes with a dedicated graphics card, which will give more flexibility for gaming, but the Ryzen has very good integrated graphics which will play FM at medium settings (possibly higher).

If you can afford the extra, I'd still be inclined to go for the Medion if it were me, but if you'd prefer to save the money and FM is the only game you're going to play then you're not going to go wrong with the Ryzen based one either - as long as you make sure you go for the one with the 4500U.  There is a significant jump in performance from the 3500U to the 4500U.

Hi, i've been looking at the following laptop:

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-5-a515-44-15-6-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-512-gb-ssd-black-10208163-pdt.html

I mainly use my laptops purely for FM and then other general laptop uses but nothing anywhere near as intense as FM (SkyGo/BTSport on the odd occasion).

Currently out of stock in my area but i've advised to re-check the site on the 15th for an update in stock.

Any advice with this or anything similar? In terms of price range i could probably go up to £650 at a max.

Thanks guys, first time i've ever seen this post and i've always been looking for something similar when i look for new laptops. Seems really helpful :applause:

There's this one as well, which is the same CPU but slightly smaller (14" screen) and less storage for £50 less - but if you want the larger screen or storage £550 is a good price for that.  Very good processor.

Just to query, my current laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad 320S, in terms of improvements for FM running with either of these two, would you know how much of a step-up it would be?

Sorry, forgot to write that. I can afford 800£, but would like to give a couple of hundred less, if the laptop can run FM21 easely.

I was looking at this one. (The website is in Danish, so the specifications are as following: AMD Ryzen 5 2,3 GHz, 8 GB DDR4 RAM, 256 GB SSD, Radeon Vega graphics). Should this do the job, or would you suggest to buy something better? :)

Yep, that'll be good.  Very good processor (Ryzen 5 4500U) and integrated graphics which will handle medium settings or higher.  Good price as well - go for it.

No idea, because that doesn't tell me what the specs of your machine are, and the Lenovo site suggests that the model number in question had a range of different configurations.

To share this, type "dxdiag" in the Windows search bar, and click the "run command" which comes up.

You should get a window come up which looks like this:

image.png.fb361283ba34e7e9857ca9dc76be0cb9.png

Click the "save all information" button and upload the .txt file that it saves from that.

I've attached the document for you if that helps. Also, i'm thinking about possibly expanding my budget and pushing up towards £700 and i have found the following :

Any suggestions with these or others at a similar price? Are they worth the extra £150/£200 in comparison to the previous two?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions

Any of those would be quite an improvement on the current one.  The CPU's are quite a lot better.

https://www.box.co.uk/FA506II-HN138T-ASUS-TUF-Gaming-A15-FA506II-HN138T_2963827.html would be the best one of the three - best CPU and a dedicated graphics card so it is the strongest option.  A dedicated graphics card isn't going to be essential though if FM is the only game you're playing.

The Acer at Currys and the other ASUS one are both basically the same spec, but £50 difference in price.  Both seem to have good reviews, so my take would be to go with the one that's cheaper!

It's very difficult to quantify exactly how much the performance will increase with these compared to the original one with the Ryzen 5 4500U.  Any of them will do the job you've said you want it to do - just these will do it a little better.

If you can genuinely afford the extra, then I'd say go for the ASUS at £700 once it's in stock, because it does have the best specs of the lot.  But, if it is a stretch, then the others will also do a good job.

thanks

It'll run the game.  Processing won't be particularly quick, but certainly won't be awful.  Decent integrated graphics capability as well.  Probably as good as you can get for the price.

This one: https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8842033

Same CPU as number 1, but much higher storage (512GB compared to 128GB direct from Lenovo).

If you can upgrade the storage in number 1 to match the model at Argos and make it cheaper though, go for that.

Thank you, it seems that I can only get 10% off, so is it worth paying about £40 extra to get number 1 with 14” FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, 300 nits instead of the Argos one with 15.6” FHD (1920 x 1080) TN, 250 nits?

That bit in bold means how bright the screen is - you'll be paying £40 for a brigher, but slightly smaller screen.  So, entirely down to what your preference is there.

TN panels have a better response time, as well as a cheaper price tag, while IPS panels have better viewing angles and color reproduction for a little extra cash.

Thank you, so I take it that TN would be more suitable for games and IPS for watching films?

Hey Chaps, looking to get back into Football Manager for the first time in years.

In regards to budget, I'm looking at around £800 for a laptop ideally, however I could be swayed to a higher budget, if the performance justifies it.

I want something that is future proofed to a a degree, so presumably a Ryzen 5/7 or Intel 7 would be the best option.

In regards to other uses, we'll be using it for video streaming and potentially other gaming depending on it's quality - this isn't a deal-breaker though.

Thanks everyone.

This is the best I've found under £800 - very good spec for the price and a decent graphics card as well seeing as you've stated you'd be looking to play other games: https://www.box.co.uk/30029471-Medion-Deputy-P10_3201868.html

Hey kevhamster, thanks for the swift response.

I've been looking at this one (below), for an additional £20 do you think it's a better option.

https://www.box.co.uk/82B50042UK-Lenovo-Legion-5-15_2938438.html

Additionally, how do you think these would run FM overall. I'd like to run at least 6 leagues (speed isn't a big issue here).

It largely depends on what other games you want to play.  The CPU in this one is a bit better, but the graphics card is quite a bit weaker.  So, it'll be a bit better for FM, but may struggle with some other modern games.

Being completely honest the performance of FM is more important to me than other games, happy to play some old Scholl RTS's and less graphic hungry games so to speak.

Thanks kev gives me some food for thought.

Ok, in that case I'd suggest the one you linked to then, as the 1650 is more than enough for FM and older games.

Being completely honest the performance of FM is more important to me than other games, happy to play some old Scholl RTS's and less graphic hungry games so to speak.

Thanks kev gives me some food for thought.

if you could wait for couple of months a new legion variant will be released at better specs and almost same price probably a bit higher than 50-100 check em out here..

Hi

Will the game run well and will 3D matches run smoothly on a Lenovo T470s.

i7-6600 CPU 2.6ghz

8gb DDR4

Integrated HD graphics

Also is £200 a good asking price for one of these?

thanks

It will work, how well is anyone's guess. If 200 is all you're spending then it is what it is.

https://www.box.co.uk/1L6F7EAABU-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-15-ec1009na_2958259.html

Started up a game,

running the following,

Scotland league 2 and above

Belgium first div amatuer and above

Croatia second league and above

France national and above,

Germany,  3rd league and above,

Holland 2nd div and above

Italy c and above

Poland first div and above

Portugal secodn league and above

Russia first division and above

Spain second division and above

MLS

Large Database selected, Its showing game speed as 2 1/2 stars??

does that sound ok or about right for the amount of countries/leagues?

can you add/remove nations as you play so you can manage in they countries? so just say i load scotland as playabale and others as view only, can i then make them playable and apply for jobs in them as and when i choose?

cheers mate

Hi,

What’s the least cost laptop to play FM21 on? I’ve got it on mobile but fancy a change and do get the full experience... any recommendations?

Technically this would run the game - but how well and at what expectations is always going to be ambiguous as per the opening post.

You'll have to play ball (so to speak) and tell us what your budget is.

Hi Gents,

I'm in the process of buying a new laptop and have the Huawei Matebook X Pro 2020 in my sights (https://consumer.huawei.com/uk/laptops/matebook-x-pro-2020/specs/)

The Spec I'm looking at is as follows (also see above hyperlink)

  • 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10510U Processor, 1.8 GHz 4 cores, Turbo up to 4.9 GHz
  • 16 GB LPDDR3 2133 MHz
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® MX250 (2GB GDDR5)
  • 1 TB NVMe PCIe SSD

I only play FM Gaming-wise and the usual browsing/MS Office etc.

Will this be sufficient to run FM21 smoothly without taking forever to complete a season;

  • 2D Match Engine (90% of the time)
  • 7/8 Leagues

I would appreciate any feedback and would also consider alternatives (This Huawei Model will cost me £1199.99 so anything around that figure)

For what its worth, I don't really like the look or bulkiness of Gaming laptops, but wouldn't rule them out if one would provide better performance as a lesser cost.

Thanks in advance,

Adam

Hi Adam.

We can't fairly comment on how quick processing will be, as this is quite subjective and what I find acceptable may not be acceptable to you.

In terms of the spec, it certainly meets the minimum clock speed for FM21 - it is below the clock speed for FM20 and earlier, but it should certainly run the game regardless.

Should also handle the 3D match engine without issue seeing as it has a dedicated graphics card.

At the price I'm seeing on the Huawei site, there are likely to be far better value options out there.  I'd also ask if you're specifically looking for a touchscreen model, as I suspect this is one of the reasons it's priced as highly as it is.
