FM24 - PC/Laptop advice thread *** PLEASE READ OPENING POST BEFORE POSTING ***

Hi all!

My old laptop has given up the ghost unfortunately so I’m here for a bit of advice please!

I’m looking for the best of both worlds, a decent work laptop that can run FM21 (5/6 leagues with a large database, with high graphics). Not at the same time but it has to be able to perform well at both really.

I’ve got my Xbox Series X for my serious gaming so I’m just after something for FM21, RuneScape, Minecraft, films, Spotify as well being used as a workhorse during the day.

I’ve a budget of around £700 or so, preferably PCWorld or Curry’s as I could get 20% off. 😇

Cheers all!

Must admit, I look purely at spec rather than reviews.  Nothing else in Currys was in stock under £700 which I'd consider worthwhile.

If you don't mind looking elsewhere, here's another one.

Ahhhh I’ve been comparing that to this below for the last few weeks, thinking of the ASUS as the reviews are somewhat better!

Specs-wise the Medion is a bit better as it has the newer gen version of the i5 out of the two, but the Asus is still decent.

Most are about the overheating - could be solved with a laptop cooler.

Others say the SSD isn't big enough - and it's stated what it is.

Another says they miss the DVD drive - it was never included.

Some people playing games it's not designed for., World of Tanks have a specific graphics setting on their page, for example.

It's an entry level gaming laptop at that price - not really sure what people expeceted. But I'd imagine it would be fine for FM with a laopt cooler.

The processor won't affect the graphics settings - that's the job of the graphics card.

However, out of those two CPU's, the Ryzen 7 5800H is the clear winner.

The two laptops with that CPU have either the RTX 3060 or 3070 as the graphics card, both of which are frankly massive overkill if FM is the only game you're playing.  So, if FM is the only game you're playing, I'd go with the cheaper model with the 3060.

And with those specs, you will want to also consider buying a laptop cooling pad as I'm going to assume they generate a fair amount of heat.

You'll be fine.

Gsync is a technology that sets the monitor so the refresh rate follows the FPS output of the graphics card.   It's nice to have but by no means essential.  I have a Nvidia GPU and my monitor doesn't have Gsync and it works fine.

0r

ASUS Flow X13 (AMD Ryzen 7 5800HS - NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 1650 - RAM: 32 GB)

If FM is the only game you play, the second one.

If you'll be playing other modern games as well, the first one.

Reason for this is the second one has the better CPU but weaker graphics card, but the graphics card is still more than enough for FM.

The first one has a stronger graphics card, but the CPU is still excellent even if it's not quite as strong as the other one, so will be better for gaming other than FM due to the stronger graphics card.

Can you let me know if there is anything currently better than the following at a similar price- https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/gaming/pc-gaming/gaming-laptops/msi-stealth-15m-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-rtx-3060-512-gb-ssd-10220214-pdt.html

WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET? Linked one is currently £1399 so around that price point, could stretch a little further to future proof it, but don't want to spend if unnecessary
ANY OTHER INFO?

Do you want to watch Netflix? On occasion
Do you play other games? Hoping to be able to play Crusader Kings III, Total War series, Jurassic Park Evolution, and possibly Forza Horizon with ease.
Do you want to edit videos? no
Listen to music, spotify? Spotify
Do you edit photos? No

Hi all,

looking for an upgrade on my laptop which will be solely used for Football manager.

my main priority is loading speeds as I prefer to play the games in 2D anyway. After doing a bit of research this is the laptop I’m looking at at the moment

HP Pavilion 15-ec1006na 15.6 Inch Full HD IPS Gaming Laptop - (Shadow Black) (AMD Ryzen 7 4800H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti (6 GB Dedicated) Graphics, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, Windows 10 Home 64) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0877MJY1Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_ARCDYY3Y3XV1Y2SGM8W4

I’m still not totally sure I know what I’m looking for so any help would be appreciated!

Yes.  Prices are quite high at the moment generally, so given the current market it's a very good price.

Another option is this: https://www.box.co.uk/1L6F7EAABU-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-15-ec1009na_2958259.html

CPU is the same, slightly weaker version of the graphics card, but 16GB RAM.  Same amount of storage.

Last question I promise haha. What will that extra RAM do for me in game?

In terms of FM, nothing to be honest.

But in case you do decide you want to do other things with the laptop as well, double the RAM is likely to be of more use than a marginally stronger graphics card.

Ultimately, the choice is up to you.  Both are the same price and specs are broadly quite similar. :)

If you're happy to go with a refurbished model, this one has the same CPU as the one at £500.

The reason that one gets recommended is because its miles ahead of anything else available in that price range in terms of CPU performance.

You get a 12 month warranty, same as you would with a brand new model.

Of course, there can be some things to be aware of, such as battery life may not be at 100% for example, but I would have no hesitation in recommending them to people who aren't sure.

I've bought two laptops from them and can also vouch for their warranty service as the most recent one I had did develop a fault and it was replaced for an equivalent model.

Nothing for the same price, sadly.

There is this one: https://www.laptopstation.co.uk/product/laptops/vivobook-m4/

But given the small price difference, you're probably just as well going for the brand new one at Currys.

Looking at getting at desktop. Will only be playing football manager on it and want the processing speed in game to be as fast as possible. I like to load something like 150k players and probably 25-30 leagues and I play with the 3D match engine so would like that as good as possible as well.

I have very little knowledge of computers but my understanding is that I wouldn’t need a top of the range gaming pc because FM isn’t that intensive, so I’m wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of the level of pc I’d need to run fm as quickly as possible, but without over doing it on the spec front with a load of extras I don’t need. Ideally I don’t want to be spending more than £1,000

Hey,

I posted a month or two ago, and then had a change of circumstances. Now I can get a PC again, Its now out of stock, and I’m looking for another.

My budget is around the £800 mark as I want to leave some room to buy dual monitors/screens. Main tasks would be to play FM, work on Microsoft programs etc and maybe other games like sims.

scrolled back and seen the following three mentioned recently:

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/gaming/pc-gaming/gaming-pcs/acer-nitro-n50-110-gaming-pc-ryzen-5-gtx-1650-1-tb-hdd-10209356-pdt.html

Which of these three would be most suitable for what I’m looking for? Or maybe there’s a better option than these?

Thank you in advance for any help, and apologies for having for help once again!

For the 3D graphics, it'll be absolutely fine.

In terms of how many leagues, we can never speculate on this as I don't know what speed you'd consider acceptable.  But the CPU is solid and should run the game well.

Best CPU of the three, and graphics card will do the job (all three have the same graphics card, so I've based it on the CPU).

I've had a look at a few stores and can't find anything to beat it at that price.

Thanks Kev, before I saw this reply I had another look and came across:

https://www.palicomp.co.uk/amd_best_buy on “hotukdeals” which is £450 but offers “PROMO - RYZEN 5 3600 + B550M-K + RTX2060 6GB + 600W KOLINK” for £425 taking the total price to £875.

Would this be a significant improvement on the £800 Box one above or not? Thanks again!

The graphics card is significantly stronger, but the CPU is the same.  I'd say purely for the games you're looking at playing it's not necessary, but an extra £75 to upgrade from a 1650 is 2060 with the bonus of twice the RAM is pretty much a no-brainer, especially if there's a chance you may want to look at other games down the line as well.

Looking to get back into fm and looking at a new laptop but not overly tech savvy. Would anyone know if this would do the job. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/5029976 or would this one be better https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-15-eh0522sa-15-6-laptop-amd-ryzen-3-256-gb-blue-10218524-pdt.html

Out of those two, the one from Currys is stronger.

But, if you can afford an extra £20 over the one at Argos, this is a considerable upgrade on both: https://www.box.co.uk/M513IA-BQ482T-ASUS-VivoBook-15-AMD-Ryzen-5-8GB-RAM-512_3554014.html

Hey guys, really cool thread that is exactly what I needed! My laptop is an Acer Aspire V3-574-73ZL, very old but runs strong enough, but it is giving out.

I will only ever be playing FM and on occasion a modded out Fallout NV, so I was really hoping you guys could help me out and confirm this laptop is what I'm after?

https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/compare/NX.A1HEK.003-NX.A19EK.002-NX.A1HEK.005 - The middle one (although is the one on the right the same laptop in Silver for £100 more?!)

I've been happy enough with my current laptop running FM20, so just looking for a decent amount of leagues (8-15) and nations being simulated at a decent enough speed (average to fast), would like good graphics too.

Would specifically be interested in input on the graphics card, as I was burned by this in the past and simply don't understand it - Will this one run FM at top spec and FNV?

Any questions or advice is greatly appreciated! Cheers guys

To answer your first question, as far as I can see the middle and right ones are the same spec.

In terms of the graphics capability, I've heard the Iris XE is good for integrated graphics.  However, we've had no specific feedback from anyone here as the Iris XE is actually pretty new so it's a risk.

But, you can get the below which has a better CPU and a very strong dedicated graphics card for £50 less (I'm actually staggered you can get a laptop with a 2060 for this price): https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/gaming/pc-gaming/gaming-laptops/lenovo-legion-5p-15-6-gaming-laptop-amd-ryzen-7-rtx-2060-256-gb-ssd-10205989-pdt.html

That will definitely be able to handle Fallout New Vegas, including whichever mods you want to throw at it.

Hello, thanks for the response!

you said this has a better CPU, what do you mean by this? I thought the 11th gen i7 would be better, but I have almost no understanding of this!

also when compared to this version I found: https://www.box.co.uk/NX.A1FEK.001-Acer-Aspire-5-Intel-Core-i7-16GB-RAM-512_3213605.html?wgu=13045_57622_16186127488551_3c14635359&wgexpiry=1626388748&utm_source=webgains_57622&utm_medium=webgains&utm_campaign=affiliate

the laptop you recommend has half the DDR4, half the memory, this has the 11th gen i7 so the CPUN comparison will be interesting to learn about, but has the graphics card as you said. What is the cost benefit I’m looking at here if I truly will never play anything but FM and FalloutNV?

I really appreciate the help on this!

I really appreciate the help on this!

FM is a processing game - it doesn't really rely heavily on graphics.

Whereas other games are focussed on graphics and don't really need great processors.

You basically picked the same processor again.

Kev already gave you a recommendation and I've compared the two for you.

You can make your own mind up - but you came here for Help and Kev gave it.

So you can go with your own or go with the help you asked for.
