FM24 - PC/Laptop advice thread *** PLEASE READ OPENING POST BEFORE POSTING ***

Recommended Posts

Good Morning,

Wondering if anyone can help me out?

In desperate need for a laptop as mine just simply cannot keep up with the demands of FM this year...

Budget - ideally £500, but if nothing can be found for that price, i am ok with pushing the boat out a little further.

The Laptop will only be used for Football Manager and thats it really. So as long as that runs perfectly with multiple leagues as playable and a large/custom database, no complaints.

Cheers in advance.

Hi all,

I’m currently looking at getting a new laptop as my current one has given up the ghost. I’ve been happy with my previous HP laptops so thought I’d start there. I also want to be sure that FM21 will easily play on it as well.

I saw this HP laptop on John Lewis which seems to cover everything:

What do you think?

Nope, they are effectively identical (aside from storage space), although the ASUS appears to be out of stock.

If you can stretch to £550, I highly recommend this: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-14-5405-14-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-256-gb-ssd-silver-10208028-pdt.html

This is better:

Better CPU and graphics card, plus £100 cheaper.

Hi

I am able to get a 15% discount through Argos for a limited time.

My budget is £500 (I’m willing to go higher if necessary)  you recently recommended a great laptop, however it’s sold out at Argos. see link below.

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9188916

I don’t really know much about laptops so would like to check with you guys first before purchasing to get an opinion on the laptop.

I usually play in 2D and am looking to load in as many leagues as I can to play journeyman saves.

Are there any laptops worth buying around that price range ?

I’ve linked one below but unsure whether it’s any good for fm

I would love to know your thoughts.

Thanks again

Is there a difference mate ? The options I have are the Xbox version from Microsoft store or the football manager website one which is epic version or steam don’t really know the difference only ever played mobile versions want the proper one ahha

Either Epic or Steam have the full version of FM.  But if the game is full price on both, save yourself some cash by buying a Steam code from here: https://www.shopto.net/en/dwnld59871-football-manager-2021-p987324/

They are legit as they're a Sega approved retailer and you'll get the code as soon as you've paid.

Either will be OK.

But, if you can stretch above £500 and don't mind shopping elsewhere, this is a good choice: https://www.box.co.uk/M413IA-EB573T-ASUS-Vivobook-14-M413IA-EB573T_2955297.html

There's an open box, but otherwise as good as new model of this under the same link for a smidge over £510, or the £570 if you want the 100% brand new, sealed version.

I'm looking to get myself a laptop, primarily for Football Manager, but would also like some potential to play other AAA games adequately (I don't need super incredible graphics etc), and some browsing and streaming.

I'd love to be able to run a large number of leagues at a reasonable speed (the dream has been able to load every available league without each day taking a painfully long time to process, but I know this may not be feasible) and have matches run on high graphical settings.

I also like to download facepacks and logo's etc, not sure if this needs to be taken into account.

My budget would between £1000 - £1200

If you don't mind a wait of a couple of weeks whilst it's built and configured, then this will give you what you want, plus you won't get all the bloatware mass market manufactures install on their machines: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/nova-15/42zkYybhQT/

You may want to add an extra storage drive depending on what games you're thinking of - this currently has a single 1TB M2 SSD.

Hi All,

I have always played FM on a laptop, but with working from home possibly being introduced full-time I’m finally looking to buy a PC that I can use for both work & Football Manager.

My knowledge of computers is limited, so I’m looking for some assistance. I’m hoping to be able to purchase a PC and dual screen monitors for around £1000. The budget is flexible if something is massively worth it, but under £1000 would be a bonus.

I’m not in a particular rush to get this, and also don’t have a preference for which shop I buy it from as I don’t have discount for any!

If anyone could provide some tips on what I should be looking for, or provide a couple of options it would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Would like the option of WiFi as well as Ethernet. not fussed on streaming/editing videos etc.

Thank you in advance!

If you can give some examples of large electronics retailers you could buy from in Sweden, I could take a look with the assistance of Google Translate.

Are you intending to play other games?  If so, please name some of the games you play so we can ensure the spec is as appropriate as possible.

Hi Kev,

I would not be too fussed about other games on PC, as I do most of my gaming on PS besides FM.

I suppose if it could run games like sims for the mrs, it might keep her happy but besides that not too bothered!

Thanks again!

Nice CPU, GPU will be ample for what you're asking for and leaves  budget left for two monitors.

The graphics card has 3 outputs (1x HDMI, 1x Display Port and 1x DVI) so you will be able to hook two monitors up to it but you will need to ensure the monitors you buy have either a Display Port or DVI input as well as HDMI.  Something like this: https://www.box.co.uk/iiyama-G-Master-Black-Hawk-G2230HS-B1-22_3453677.html

CDON, Elgiganten, NetOnNet. There also Webhallen and MediaMarkt but I have never ordered from there so only in the last case scenario I guess.

If you want some more info, I currently have a Custom Setup that loads 97000 players at the start of the game.

Hope all of this is helpfull :)

Hi Kev,

Thanks so much for looking into this, I will look at ordering it shortly I think!

I have noticed that by removing the Windows 10 it saves £70. Would this be wise to do and look to buy it elsewhere  at a cheaper price (I hear £10-£20 possible). Every penny counts! :D

Thanks again.

Hi guys love the thread, unfortunately my laptop has bit the dust and needs a new motherboard, it’s specs are great

Medion Erazer P6689 Core i7-8550U 8GB 1TB GeForce GTX 1050

Hoping for something similar, price wise under £600 would be great only used for FM and doing basic work so having a few programs open at the same time would be perfect
Thanks!

I've never done it myself so wouldn't feel comfortable recommending it.

I have seen certain grey market resellers will sell it for those kinds of prices - I can't comment on whether the keys are legit or whether they're technically within TOS to activate in any given reason.

Ultimately, it's up to you.  Personally, I'd chose to go with having Windows ready installed just to ensure there are no issues.

You won't get a laptop currently with a dedicated graphics card for £600 or under - the nearest I can find is this, which is £650.00: https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8440710

If you don't mind not having a dedicated graphics card, and so potentially needing to reduce the graphics settings a little, the best I can currently see under £600 is this: https://www.box.co.uk/M413IA-EB573T-ASUS-Vivobook-14-M413IA-EB573T_2955297.html

Very strong CPU, graphics card more than capable for the sort of games you want to run and a decent amount of RAM and storage.  Seems a decent price as well.

I’ve taken a look at the ASUS, would it be worth the extra money to upgrade to the Ryzen 7 processor for the extra £100? Do you think it’s worth having a laptop with a dedicated graphics card for FM?
Many thanks

Assume you mean this one: https://www.box.co.uk/M413IA-EB574T-ASUS-VivoBook-14-M413IA-EB574T_2955298.html

If you're going to spend the extra, I'd just go for the one at Argos as the Ryzen 5 4600H is actually stronger than the Ryzen 7 4700U (but the Ryzen 7 4700U is a little bit stronger than the Ryzen 5 4500U).

The one thing the Asus with the Ryzen 7 does have going in its favour is having a 512GB SSD rather than a 256GB one, but if you're not installing games other than FM then the 256GB will probably be sufficient.

Answering the graphics card question, and to whether it's worth it - that is entirely subjective with FM.  Medium settings still look fine in my opinion, and the Ryzen's integrated graphics can handle that for sure.  I have a laptop with the much weaker Ryzen 5 2500U and that does OK with the medium preset (and I think with crowd detail lowered and shadows off).  But a dedicated graphics card, even with the relatively modest 1050 in that one in Argos, will handle FM's 3D graphics at max settings, which are that bit nicer than the medium preset.

So, it all really boils down to what your own priorities are.

MATE, honestly, you are a legend.

You might have written something about this and If you have I apoligize. What are somethings I have to do to keep my laptop in tip top condition? I will mostly/only use it in bed or on the sofa, do I need something underneath? Etc etc

NEVER LET IT REST ON THE BED! Always have it on a flat surface, I have a cooling pad mine sits on top of.

I would second the advice from @bigmattb28. Keep it on a flat, hard surface.  And with a laptop with a dedicated graphics card, a cooling pad is an excellent idea.

Plus, keep it in a laptop bag when not in use to minimise exposure to dust.

Considering getting this - I only use my laptop for FM21 and browsing web...But I like to have a very large database with lots of leagues running so I always go for a very strong model.

I'm not overly fussed on graphics - Performance is all that matters for me.  Is this a good option, or is there anything else with similar stats that could be recommended that might be cheaper?

Hi all, looking at potentially getting a new laptop for FM 21. I currently have a HP Notebook - 15-ba042naw which runs FM 21 adequately but fairly slow with about 6 or 7 nations (it is only 0.5 star performance but isn't unbearable, just not very fast). Looking for something under £500 (or as cheap as possible) that with a similar size database would run alot faster? Don't know much about computers/laptops so any help would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance

Hello. I am in search of a laptop that will primarily be used for FM.

Because I live in a country outside uk there is no point providing me alternative options of other machinery as I am limited to what I can find in my market.

So I have found two options. The price of both is the same. I am giving the specs of each of them:

1) i5-1035g1, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, Nvidia geforce mx110 2gb

2) amd ryzen 7 3700u, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd, Radeon vega 10 (integrated)

Ram memory on both is ddr4. I want to be able to play fm in 3d with no issues and be able to load at least around 50-60K players, meaning at least 6-8 countries.

Which one would you choose between these two options?

Thanks in advance for any response!

Am considering purchasing this laptop, main gaming use would be FM but I will play other strategy games on it.

Will it run FM21 well? Does it looks a reasonable spec at the price point?

Do prefer more portable laptops so the 14 inch size is something I’m after.

If you can afford to go over £500, then I highly recommend this for £529: https://ao.com/product/81yq0015uk-lenovo-laptop-grey-77769-251.aspx  It's a lot more capable than anything I can find for under £500.

The benchmarks score both processors closely, but the i5 has a very low base clock speed so has the prospect of being throttled under heavy load compared to the Ryzen 7 based laptop.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/GeForce-MX110-vs-Vega-10_8130_8142.247598.0.html also suggests the integrated graphics on that perform better in benchmarks than the MX110.

So, all in all, I'd be more inclined to go for the second option.

Yep, that's excellent and well priced too.

With a lot of powerful components in such a small chassis though, I'd be inclined to also order a cooling pad to go with it as I have a feeling it may pump out quite a bit of heat.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/GeForce-MX110-vs-Vega-10_8130_8142.247598.0.html also suggests the integrated graphics on that perform better in benchmarks than the MX110.

So, all in all, I'd be more inclined to go for the second option.

Hey @kevhamster thank you very much for getting back to me. I was also thinking the same.

I have also found another option of a laptop, Ryzen 5 4500U, 256GB ssd, 8gb Ram, integrated GPU vega 6. Between the Ryzen 7 laptop and this one, at the same almost price range (30 euros difference) which one would you go for?

Thank you again!

The Ryzen 5 4500U is a stronger processor than the Ryzen 7 3700U.

@kevhamster, appreciate all the help you’ve been giving everyone, and without getting you to repeat yourself, I’ve picked out the two that appeal most from your recent recommendations.... the price difference isn’t much so.. irrelevant.... so am I right in thinking the AO Lenovo is the better choice of these 2?

Its only going to be FM and some Excel project spreadsheets, that are are a bit formulaic heavy, but not earth shattering.

Yes, the Lenovo at AO is better.

Edit: Fine choice of team by the way. ;)

Thanks squire.

Will the laptop make them any better?

You should venture into OTF, we need all the support we can get there :D

I would second the advice from @bigmattb28. Keep it on a flat, hard surface.  And with a laptop with a dedicated graphics card, a cooling pad is an excellent idea.

Plus, keep it in a laptop bag when not in use to minimise exposure to dust.

I have been looking at some cooling pads, do you think any of these are good

I have a gift card for 200kr for Elgiganten

Also, would a normal bag/backpack be alright? As long as I clean it that is

Honestly, I can't recommend one over the other as I have no direct experience with them - go with whatever has the best reviews.

In terms of storage, a laptop bag is generally preferable as you'll have padding and straps to keep it in place.  But, ultimately if it keeps the dust off, it's better than not being in a bag.

Afternoon All,

I've Been following this thread to know which laptop to get and settled on the Acer aspire 5 with ryzen 5 I saw recommended. I've just been to pick up from curry's and when I asked the store assistant about steam or epic they had as much clue as I do. Which works best on the acer, if fact. What is the difference between steam and Epic.

Thank you all

In terms of FM, there is no real difference.  Both are just different storefronts offering FM for sale.

I have accounts with both, but personally buy FM through Steam.
