Communicating with my players frustrates me.

Recommended Posts

With FM21 on the horizon I feel it is time to reapproach the above subject. I'm not talking specifically about having a meeting with my player, I'm talking about the bigger picture. I mean team talks, shouts, feedback etc etc.

If I watch a match on the telly I can see the manager shouting constantly often times. For me these are the confidence managers; those that cxoncentrate on man management perhaps a little more than tactical. I think that needs to be pushed more in FM. I can chose it as a manager type but I don't think I'm helped in game with the way I can talk to players.

Team Talks

I think team talks need to be enhanced a little. Currently I can do a talk to my whole team and then I can either talk to areas of the pitch or individual players. Sadly, I don't think it always covers the breadth of what you want to talk about. The most infuriating thing for me is that I can't tell a midfielder that his finishing is poor. Similarly, I can only tell a striker his finishing is poor even if his role is depper, such as a DLF or F9. IFs in my team are goalscorers but they count as midfielders and I can't tell them their finishing is bad.

I'd like to see all options given for all players. I'd like the ability to be able to push a tactical idea to a player in my team talks. For example, if I want my creative mid to get forward a bit more I want to give him a little confidence talk at half time. "I have faith in you" could really mean so much.

Shouts

Shouts in game really need more feedback. I put out a demand more and pretty much always get a boost. I put encourage and pretty much always get a frustrated. Why? I know these players well. I train them day in, day out. I should know what comments on the field of play will give them that impetus to play the game of their life. I've played hours and hours of this game but I don't always feel like I know.

For me now, shouts consist of every 15 minutes of in game time I might chuck out a demand more, but I want to know if chucking out an encourage and getting frustrated can boost performance. Sometiems I feel like a player has something more about them when I've frustrated them as if maybe they're trying to prove me wrong.

Further, I feel like I should be able to give feedback more often. In FM20 I have tried to be less full team with my shouts and more focused on each player. If I see a player do what I want him to do I will praise them. What then frustrates me is when he does something great 10 minutes later I can't say anything because I'm blocked from shouts. I don't know exactly how FM works, but I assume it maybe gives a morale boost when you do a shout. Can we have perhaps smaller boosts but more often?

The one shout I really want is believe, but I wonder if that is what encouragement is supposed to mean. It can be so vague, and, as I said, encouragement so rarely works. If I'm given encouragement in my job I feel it makes me want to do better, and I'm not a professional footballer. Why does it frustrate every player there is in FM?

Post Game Feedback

This is a similar area. I get told that my striker has had a great game and so i got to tell him so. I can only tell him his finishing was great. Vice versa, I can only tell a midfielder his passing or his creativity was good. What about my IFs who keep heading over the bar? I want to tell them to hit the bloody target.

Don't get me wrong, anyone. I love the game. I defend it enough on these forums, as many will maybe know. I just feel like I'm throwing darts blind sometimes. As a manager I feel like I should know my players inside out but often I don't.

It's hard to say exactly what is really needed because I don't know exactly how the game works. It might be really difficult to open things up to more feedback. The last thing I want is to give players even more ways to boost morale and make the game even easier than it can be, or more ways for an ai manager to get left behind. I just can't help but feel frustrated often in game.

Thoughts? Please remember to be considerate.

It's a little old now and could do with an update, but the following is still relevant when it comes to touchline shouts:

Specifically with "Encourage" as you mention it - that shout is primarily for when your players are lacking morale.

It's all very contextual, easy to get "wrong" and players don't like repetition either.

That was really helpful, thanks.

Don't know why I have never seen that one before. I go through FM and forum interest in stages. Must have been posted on one of my periods away.

Going to make more effort to attempt to use them at the right time and see what happens.
