Making money in the Championship

Anyone got any advice on how to make money in leagues like the EFL Championship?

I have taken York City up and managed to get a couple of mid-table finishes. However, I seem to be both earning and spending about 6 mill a year. Not making a loss, but not growing the finances either. Some of the teams I am facing have a player with wages higher than my entire wage budget (my highest is 11k p/w). Due to low wages, transfer values of players are still low. How can I go about making a profit to try and get on equal footing with some of these other clubs besides just continuing to raise youngsters in the hope of selling down the line?

The big one is signing free transfers under the age of 30. You really only need 1-2 of them per season to cover your entire squad's wages.

I signed Kebano on a free, he played a handful of matches before tearing his hamstring, and then as soon as he was fit to play in January, I sold him for 6 million. My annual player wage budget was less than that.
