Emulating Klopp

Welcome to my career update story where I will be trying to emulate the career path and achievements of Jurgen Klopp.

As I already said in my post in the challenges section:

The aim of the save is to take over the 3rd from bottom club in the German 2nd Division in February and eventually lead them to promotion and qualifying for Europe within 7 seasons. 
I must do this by employing tactics that use extremely urgent pressing intensity along with counter-pressing on all the time. 

As set out in the rules of the challenge, I have taken over Greuther Furth because they were 3rd from bottom when I returned from holidaying the game. Unfortunately I holidayed a match later than I wanted, but I can’t be bothered setting the whole save up again, so Greuther Furth it is!

 

 

My career begins with a home match against Hannover 96. It is one of only 14 remaining fixtures I have to save the club from relegation, so hopefully I can get off to a good start. 

My next update will detail how I fared in my first 4 matches of the career.

Greuther Fürth have quite a bit of history too. They did win three championships, although the last one was almost a century ago. It will be interesting to see if you can take them (back) to the top and challenge that Munich-club-which-shall-not-be-named for the top spot, in Bavaria and Germany. Good luck!

February 2020

In my first 4 matches as manager of Greuther Fürth, I played 4, 3 at home and 1 away, losing all home fixtures and winning my first match away to Wiesbaden. 

In my first match I had 3 men sent off and lost 2-0 to league leaders Hannover 96. We held out well for a long time though in that match with Hannover only scoring both goals late on.

A week later Arminia Bielefeld beat us 1-0 at home. And then the following week, I won my first match as manager when beating Wiesbaden away 1-0. 
The final match of the month saw us take on Vfb Stuttgart, losing 3-0 at home.

All of this means we are still in 16th place after 24 matches, level on points with 15th placed Holstein Kiel, who have better goal difference. 

In March, I’ll have a chance to climb out of the relegation zone when we take on relegation rivals Holstein Kiel away from home on the 7th. 
Then we face Hamburger SV at home on the 14th of March, before completing the month of March with an away match against fellow relegation threatened Dynamo Dresden on the 21st.

March 2020

I had a decent run of results in March, unbeaten in the 3 matches.
This unbeaten run started when we traveled to Kiel and managed to come back from 2 down at halftime, with our equaliser coming as late as the 2nd minute of Injury time, through Paul Jaeckel, my central defender/ central midfielder. 
That match was followed by another draw, when we took on Hamburg at home, in a scoreless draw.  The third and final fixture saw us travel to Dresden to take on fellow strugglers Dynamo Dresden. We scored two goals in 5 minutes in the 70th and 75th minute to put us 2-0 up. Before we scored another 2 goals to make it 4-0, Dresden had a man sent off but still managed to pull one consolation goal back in the 87th minute to make it 4-1. A much needed victory that lifts us up the table into 14th position, 6 points ahead of 2nd from bottom, Dynamo Dresden. 

We’ll have a chance to extend our current unbeaten run of 3 to 4, when bottom club Osnabruck travel to play us at home on the 4th of April, before travelling away to take on Darmstadt a week later. Following that trip away, we host Sandhausen at home, before facing 1.FC Nurnberg in the Franken derby. There’s only 7 matches left in the season, so Aprils results will be crucial if we are to survive.

April 2020

We have picked up 7 points from the available maximum of 12 points in April’s 4 matches, to leave us 3 points from safety heading into May.

 A brace by Branimir Hrgota set us up for a 3-0 win at home to bottom side Osnabruck. In the 2nd match of April’s fixtures, Darmstadt’s Serdar Dursan scored a hat-trick to end our 4 match unbeaten run in a 3-2 loss, before a late equaliser by Sandhausen’s Rurik Gislason denied us all 3 points in injury time. Our last match of April was 1-0 win against 1.FC Nurnberg in the Franken Derby, where Branimir Hrgota scored once more to give us a victory over the clubs fiercest rivals. 

All of this means we need just 3 points from our remaining 3 matches of the season to ensure our safety. 

The first of the 3 matches is at home to 2nd placed FC Heidenheim 1846, then we travel away to take on Vfl Bochum a week later, before finishing the season against Karlsruhe at home.
