Lucozade1
Still playing FM19 for now, but quite a few years in, one thing I've noticed is there is a lack of CM talent. Now I know it's possible to retrain them, but todays question is. What does a players position really effect? Is it just a defensive minded thing, or does it effect everything a player does <---- This is the question, everything below is me waffling. Lets use a #10 for example. Natural in that position but competent at CM. 4* rating as an CAM but 2* at CM. If I'm expecting him to do the same job, how does him being slightly deeper effect this? Then again, I've been reading some tactic guides lately and the overall opinion is that the formation is 90% the defensive shape. So when attacking, should my #10 be just as effective playing as CM or higher up the pitch? as I'm telling him to push forward in the CM position so really should be operating in the same area as a #10 if lets say I told him to hold back a bit more. I'm wanting to play 4231 as a formation, but as I said, with the lack of CM quality, but a huge pool of CDMs and CAMs, it seems obvious to choose a 4231 with CDMs. If I play with a Segundo Volante (attack), is he really a defensive midfielder? HUNT3R
Technically speaking, the formation is the the starting positions. It does help to see it as defensive shape, though it's not quite correct. Roles and especially duties affect the attacking shape. If a player is played out of position, say at CM instead of AM, their Mental Attributes are affected as it's not a 'natural' position. The more unfamiliar, the more those attributes are affected. In general though, if a player has the attributes to perform in a role in that position, he'll be fine. Long term, it's beneficial to try and retrain the player to at least "Accomplished" in the position.

I read on this forum that difference between player being natural in position vs acomplished is very small. Also read that when you play a player out of position that the decision attribute takes the hit the most.
