Preferred side of a player in two or three man pairing

I would like to know if the preferred side of the player is relevant in the game or not. I've noticed that while in the past editions of the game there was the possibility to have players which didn't have a side preference, in FM 2020 there is always a side preference, not only for regens or real players for which it's specified in the DB, but its assigned even to player which don't have preferred side in the DB.

I just make this the lowest priority. Choosing players becomes too much of a hassle if you put too much importance in their preferred side. Getting correct sides for a narrow formation is going to be a headache especially with varying roles.

I *think* their side preference can change though. My current squad have every player in their preferred side but I was sure it wasn't like that before.

As for whether it's relevant or not, I assume it can have a slightest impact just because it exists.

Thank you for sharing your experience, I want to try as well to make the player change their preferred side. It also may have something to do with their versatility and preferred foot.

I usually respect this regarding Central Defenders, because IRL it's a little pet peeve of mine when managers put them in their wrong side. Pepe I was used to always see him on the right side and when he got back to Porto he played the first months on the left and that just wasn't right for me --- aparently also for him since he was put back in his literal right position.

As for midfielders... not really. Sometimes I only learn their favorite sides when the assistant make those recomendations regarding the next match starting eleven. But I care less tbh.

Not sure if it's the case now, but when it was first brought into FM it was only to aid the AI managers making their choice where to put a player. It didn't affect how a player actually plays.

Yes, I remember it was something like that. However in past editions there where players in game which didn't have a preferred side, now its not like that: the game is assigning the preferred side also to players which don't have a preferred side in the db.

Is there a way to check this for all the players in the squad? Usually only see such info from Assistant Manager's suggestion or in the tactics screen (maybe, I forgot if they do here)?
