Network game match freezes

My brother and I have been playing FM as a network game for a few years now, and we are currently on FM19. The problem is that on match days where we aren't playing at the same time so opt to watch the other's match, or play against each other, the game freezes when a tactical change is made. Neither player can un-pause and can only be resolved by me kicking him from the game.

My machine is of good grade and can cope with any new game released with no problem at all but his isn't so good to be honest. Its a basic laptop. I run a wired internet connection and he runs wireless. We've tried him on a wired connection too, but makes no difference. Anyone any ideas on this one?
