The engine behind marginal goals or penalty decisions (referrals to VAR, or checking with the linesman) work fine in a functional sense, but the intended sense of drama is completely lost. This is because, if the players all shift to 'goal kick' positions, then I know the goal will be disallowed (the score also remains the same), whereas when the players return to the centre circle and the score changes, the commentary that "the referee is checking with VAR!" is a little redundant.
