FM20 All-European (Less England) Small Club to Big Club Challenge

Introduction

Welcome to a new season of the ‘Euro Nation’ Challenge, born out of the recent history of the highly successful Gundo’s Challenge and the Big Euro Nation Challenge that spawned out of it.  After a steady start on FM18 and FM19, hopefully with FM20 we will see a continuation of ithis and have another strong (and successful) season.

The premise of the challenge is simple, to start with a previously unplayable club and taking them all the way to a National Title and then on to winning the European Champions League. With a variety of leagues, styles of play, different rules, and many different locations for your clubs there can be a lot of variety throughout the thread, providing a great atmosphere and stories for our users to become immersed in.

The Rules

A) Game Set-up

1) Load One Nation Only (All Available Divisions within your nation)

2) Your choice of Database Size (Large Recommended)

3) NO Edited Databases of any kind

4) Customising Database

You can add players to the database up to a limit of 100,000 in total in order to add more depth to your save and also add more difficulty down the line.

Suggested Adds

Players from Top Clubs/Top Divisions (Europe or All Continents) - This increases the challenge at Continental Level

Players Based in your Nation - This can add up to 50% more players to your game

Players Based in your Region (Central Europe/East Europe/UK & Ireland) - This can add extra players likely to join your club

There will be a file correcting the club/competition names, I will advise use of this.

NO other additional customising is allowed.

5) Attribute Masking should be Enabled

6) Disable Ingame Editor (Please do this)

7) Optional Ticks

Add Key Staff (This will give you a Scout, Physio & Ass Man by generating them if your club is without)

Add Players in Playable Nations (This will ensure all clubs have a minimum number of players, generating them if needed)

The extra levels of detail that you can change while in the game are up to you, as they shouldn't make a difference.

B) Steps in the Game

1) Add an unemployed manager; you will not use this man to manage your club. I like "Unemployed Man or Holiday Man"

2) Go on holiday until the reset date of your chosen nation (Should take about an hour)

TIP -

Changing

Detail Level to None

will make it go faster. (Remember to change it back afterwards)

TIP - Saving on the day before this date may give you a better choice of teams by reloading the game then going on holiday for one day, I would strongly recommend trying this.

3) Add a new manager - Use yourself, or a created character to help build a story line

a) Personal Details

- Your Choice

b) Tracksuit vs. Trainer

- Your Choice

c) Past Experience lowest Possible (Generally Sunday League)

d) Coaching Licenses lowest Possible (None)

e) Other options are up to you

TIP - If you add the language of your country of choice it will make it easier at the beginning

TIP - Training now includes you at some level depending on your abilities.

4) Choose to take over any club which has been promoted to the bottom playable league of your nation.

TIP - Easiest way in FM19 to see this is on the "Season Review" screen, showing the "Promoted Clubs"

TIP - You can confirm your club by checking the Domestic History's page for not being at this level since start of game

5) Retire your unemployed manager.

6) Manage your club to National Title & European Champions League Victory

7) Completing the Challenge.

C) Signing of Players

1) You must be able to scout them

TIP - You don't actually have to scout them, just be able to

TIP - You can check your scouting range on the Scouting page

2) Alternatively (If you can't scout them), you must bring them on a trial first

3) You are able to sign anyone sent to you via Agent Offer

TIP - Make sure you screenshot the Agent offer

4) In later versions you can get your DoF to find players, he will bring in players not in Scouting Range, these are also allowed.

TIP - Grab a screenshot of your DoF signing them

D) Posting

1) Player naming is allowed. (This is a warning for those of you who do not wish to see this)

2) Discussion of tactics is allowed. (This is another warning for those of you who do not wish to see this)

Expected Updates

We have minimum expectations when it comes to a first up post and also in the end of season updates. The Bold pages are necessary for everyone; the others are some suggestions that will get others interested in your posts and following your club. All other screenshots are welcome and encouraged, but we please ask that the majority are posted as links, because lots of pictures can make the page very slow to load.

First Post:

Domestic Leagues History (Club)

Profile (Manager)

Overview (Club)

Squad (Club)

End of Season Updates:

Transfers (Club) - This is so we can see the ins & outs

League Table (Competition)

Squad (Club)

Information (Manager)

Profile (Manager)

Information (Club)

Profile (Players)

Progress of your club should be documented using this thread; we want to hear the story of your club all the way through. Please keep us updated, even if you are doing badly. If you title your end of season report in bold this makes it easier to identify. Everyone will be supportive, and really get into your game if you give more detail.

E) Other

1.        If you are Sacked

1.       You can Restart from the beginning or;

2.       Continue your game and pick a new club (Under Same Rules) at the end of the next season or;

3.       Add another Euro League/Remove Current League, holiday a whole season and continue

1.       You can still only have one nation running at a time

2.       Once the league becomes active you MUST holiday a full season

3.       The club must be one of those unplayable from the beginning

2.       No Restrictions on Parent or Feeder Clubs

3.        International Management allowed from FM14 forwards (But you cannot start as an International Manager)

The use of any external utilities and editors (Such as Genie Scout or FMM) are prohibited. As of FM14 there are also unlockables, these are also prohibited, please don't use them. It would be appreciated if you also ticked the box at the start which prevents the use of the ingame editor.

How to Post a Screenshot

1) While in FM, press the 'Prt Sc' button (usually next to F12 on your keyboard).

2) Open an image editing program such as Paint and paste the image

3) Save the file as a JPEG or PNG

4) Upload the image to an image hosting website such as Photobucket or Imageshack

5) Post the direct URL to the image here.

Alternatively using ALT + F9 in game saves a screenshot to your user data folder. (You can also edit this in the shortcuts options)

The Euro Nation Motivational

I would like to thank all of you who choose to participate in this thread this year, and to wish everyone taking on this challenge the best of luck on a long and hard journey to managerial success!  I have personally had a number of hugely enjoyable saves over the years, first in Gundos challenge and then latterly in the Big Euro Nation Challenge.  The atmosphere and support these threads have historically offered is key in making the thread, and your saves more enjoyable as I can testify to.  I and some of the other regulars of these threads are here to help for the new challengers and hope everybody that participates contributes considerably to the thread. There is nothing better than getting immersed not only in your own game but providing the encouragement to other people's attempts too. Remember we are all fighting the same battle - to defeat the AI (and uncover fabulous newgens!) - Therefore it goes without saying that any form of cheating will be severely chastised. Don't do it! I know that it is painful to lose a European Final or to lose the title on the final day (I have been there myself on more than one occasion) but eventual success down the line is all the sweeter for those defeats.

Good luck to all the participants – Here’s to a successful (and enjoyable) version!!

Gonçalo Brandão | NK Krk | Croatia | Initial Post

Let's get on this early, shall we?

Croatia was one of a few nations I was considering having a run at this year, but I picked it more at random than there actually being any reasoning behind it.

Picking a team was a little more thought-through. First off, I had the idea that I wanted to play on one of the Adriatic Islands off the west coast. There's not all that many to pick from in that regard, so it was a pretty easy choice after that. Plus, they have a fun badge - much more unique than the red/white checks that a large proportion of Croatian clubs (understandably) have.

With my PC now running very happily, I hope to be able to continue this year's version for as long as it takes!

Edit: @rlipscombeI randomly clicked on some of those screenshot links in the opening post and they no longer work.

I should point out that there is no promotion from N Ireland after the first season and after the 2nd season it is almost impossible to get a team other than Belfast Celtic.

Also the reset date is the day of the the playoff match 2nd leg (end of april), you then need to go forward a few months to 24th jun to see which team appears.

Probably need to go back further with the reload to get other teams. I know for England you have to go back to May 30 even though the promoted teams show up on June 24. In my little bit of loading looking at other nations, I've had Kelty, Brora and Berwick. Definitely going back to Scotland at some point.

Yeah, this is the case this year. I had to save roughly 1 month from the reset date and then keep re-holidaying the rest of the way.

The Kelty save is so far out of realisticnessunfortunately. Tam Scobie, Nathan Austin and a few others are all there on mega bucks. None there after being promoted and cant sign any biggish name players despite only using 1.7k of a 5k wage budget. mmmmmmm what to do

Gonçalo Brandão | NK Krk | Croatia | 2020/21 (Season 1)

Summary

Our first season in the Druga HNL went about as well as I was hoping. At no point were we comfortable, and it took us until matchday 7 to get our first win, but we also weren't ever really in trouble - at worst we dropped into the relegation zone a couple of times only by virtue of tiebreaks. A win on the last day of the season actually pushed us up to 11th, which was actually quite a bonus.

Luka Viduka, on loan from NK Lokomotiva, was the star of the early season. My initial hope was that he might score us 15 goals as a lone striker, but the goals started to dry up a little after the mid-point of the season. Fortunately, it wasn't long after when I decided that Zvonomir Sosa wasn't really doing it for me on the left wing and tried moving him to a left forward position (with Viduka still through the middle), This was a revelation and gave us so much more threat with our route-one style and was probably the key to our survival. Vatroslav Mrsic also deserves a mention for being ever-present in the centre of our defence. He's on loan to us from Istra 1981 and I'd like to be able to keep him on for another season, whereas I think it's time for Viduka to go back to his parent club.

Strangely, we weren't entered into the Cup. I'm hoping it's a seeding thing and we'll be in it next season, but reading through the details for the competition online doesn't make it entirely clear if this will be the case. Finances are on the slide, which is to be expected in a division with minimal gate receipts (225 average attendance) and no prize money. All the more reason to push up ASAP.

Edit: I was about £1k below my £5k wage budget for this season - the board have just told me they're giving me a £10k wage budget next season!

Here we go! 1.FC Schweinfurt 05! Season 1!

Our finances are looking very good! Had plenty of wage room left and a fairly decent existing staff. I was able to find some VERY good free coaches/Assman/GM that shared our style of 4231 Possession football we'll be playing alongside our backup 4141DM. Preseason has come to an end and we had our home opener with a convincing win.

Quite a few 4 star players want to leave, of course, and the free agents I've found so far that fit the system want just an obscene amount of money for their relative playing time and skill. So, we're going to be running a fairly lean ship. Any signings I've done have been under 23 thus far with some good promise, as I expect to spend at least two years in 3. Liga building the club reputation.

Right everyone, I'm going to attempt this again this year. Not been around for a while, but will attempt to make some progress.

I have decided to head to Romania to begin my journey. The lucky club? I've taken over Bucovina Rădăuțithey have no real history of any note. Promoted into Liga II in Romania, they do not have much infrastructure - a 2,000 seater stadium, basic or poor facilities and £185,268 in the bank.

Should be a good challenge!

I'm interested in trying this challenge. Where do you think may have the greatest challenge even later in the upper league? I read another post about the EPL and how absurd the money gets in it, so you have a situation of buying whatever you want. I want to avoid something like that.

I seem to remember from earlier editions, that Slovenia was quite hard, and nobody has completed it there.

Well we made it through the first season and finished significantly higher than expected.

We made it to 9th in the 20/21 standings, which was a real joy, but it was a very congested table and it was right down to the wire, unfortunately. Mathematic safety didn't come until the end of April, with only two or three matches left. Our squad at the end was significantly smaller, with a few players getting annoyed about wanting to move on because they had four stars or some offers. Very frustrating. Here's the end of season run down:

Squad

Manager

Transfers

The board is going through some significant monetary growing pains. We shifted all the way to insecure before moving back to okay, but currently we have just roughly one million in the bank. However, they've given me nearly $4 mil USD p/a in salary and only $140k in transfer. So, it's going to be free transfers. I've been looking very hard at U21 players, and I think my roster may end up being one of the youngest. However, the goal is to get some sales generated by finding diamonds in the rough or stabilize finances by being a stead mid-table team for the next year or two before I think we can start challenging for promotion safely. Also rather annoyed I haven't been seeded for DFB-Pokal this season, etiher.

Gonçalo Brandão | NK Krk | Croatia | 2021/22 (Season 2)

Summary

The Club Vision presented to me by the Chairman this season was to be a mid-table team this year, and push for top half next year. The media had us down to finish 4th this year. I was aiming for somewhere in between - I wanted top half bu I wasn't looking to pull up any trees. The squad definitely had other ideas, though, meaning for about 2 thirds of the season we were right up there with a shot at winning the league. Only one team goes up from here, so this is the only way to get promoted. Unfortunately, we faded pretty hard in the last third or so of the season. I still can't complain about a 4th place finish, as it's still a massive leap forward.

We were once again propped up by some great loanees, with Denis Busnja being the pick of them. I'm hoping to cut down on loan signings for next season and instead rely on our own players. Captain Marino Jedvaj was also integral to our solid season and I don't see any chance of that changing next season. As with last season, Zvonimir Sosa was a star for me. This season he won the top scorer award and came runner up for the young player award. Unfortunately, I think I'm going to have to sell him over the summer if an appropriate offer comes in. We were fending off bids last summer and in January too, and we're really not in a strong enough financial position to hold onto him.

With us achieving the club's goals a season early, our new objective is to maintain our top 4 position. Personally I'd like to be challenging for the promotion spot this season, but I'll be satisfied enough with just not getting worse. Our previous directive to "sign U23 players" has also been replaced, now with a "sign high-reputation players". I'm not sure how I feel about that, although it does give me license to maybe search for a couple of ageing stars to improve our depth.

Civil Service Strollers - Scotland

The match engine seems to be in pretty good shape, so time to get real and try to get Edinburgh their first Scottish championship since Heart of Midlothian in 1960. I got Civil Service up to the Scottish Championship a couple years ago, hopefully I can get further this time.

My Profile

Club Profile

Club History

Not thrilled with the club vision, they are expecting a mid-table finish. Seems unrealistic for a newly promoted side. The team has a lot of speed but the defense and central midfield are lacking.

This FM seems way harder when you start with no credentials. Your players are quicker to judge you it seems.

When I wrote this post, we had played 4 games. We had 1 point and a score of 2-9. Since then, we have gained 7 points from 5 matches, and are sitting in 15th place. Still not great but better.

Gonçalo Brandão | NK Krk | Croatia | 2022/23 (Season 3)

Summary

I turns out that switch in club vision wasn't so difficult to manage. One of our summer signings qualified as high reputation as far as the board were concerned, even though I didn't rate him that highly and he ended up playing more of a squad-player role. We had quite a large turnover of personnel this year with both Jedvaj and my first-choice holding-midfielder leaving us for cashmoney, and almost all of last year's loanees going back to their clubs. Even though I said I didn't want to rely on loan signings, the requirement for U21 players to be in the starting 11 was really a killer which ended up resulting in me bringing in some more season-long youngsters. I think our vastly different looking squad was why we started the season in a little bit of a rough patch - I was concerned we wouldn't even get anywhere near that top 4 until about the end of November. That's when things started to turn around. Even with 3 games to play, we were still about 7 points from the top team so I didn't expect the final day promotion that we got. This might be the first time I've ever been grateful for a league to sort by results between teams. I've not felt quite so passionate during a match in FM since my old "BEN" Oliveira Bairro save in FM11(10?) which some of you may have been around long enough to remember.

In terms of players, I found another "high reputation" player to bring in that was a significant part of what started us in the right direction up the table and therefore a key component in our promotion. That man is none other than World Cup runner-up Danijel Subasic. Despite Sosa's great season last year, he was muscled out by the in-better-form Ivijan Svrznjak (pronunciation guide, anyone?!). Still not as many goals as I'd like from a lone striker, but at the same time, I can't complain a whole bunch because we got promoted. The third man I'd like to highlight is Ilan Pejic, who is the only player to have played every single game - league and cup - for us this season, and also scored the opening goal in our 2-1 final day win to secure the title. He's on loan from Dinamo, and while I don't think I can afford to pry him away from them I've already put in a bid to extend his loan for a season.

I'm under no illusions, next season is probably going to be our hardest yet. I've already asked Subasic to reconsider his retirement (he's still thinking about it), and there's a couple more of this season's loanees I'd like to either make permanent or at least extend for a further season. The board have now added "make the most of set pieces" into our club vision, but it's not too important to them, so I'm hoping that my set-ups already cater to that. The club are also in the process of turning professional, so I have a feeling juggling my wage budget next year could be interesting.

Rich Nazzaro | 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 | 3. Liga | 2021/22 (Season 2)

Summary

The second season started out VERY rough. I was scrambling to put a squad together during the one week of preseason and leveraged some loans again. The transfers for the year were alright. I keep selling my players for less than the board wants, of course. We were off to a very hard start but came together very quickly, climbing up the ranks rather well. Towards the end of the season, we were threatening for at least the playoff position but ran into a poor stretch of results (I messed up on team selection quite a bit, unfortunately).

The club finally set the expansion of the stadium up to comply with 3. Liga rules and wants me to finish next season in the top half. I have a good existing team, along with some surprises (Zalewski, Sint) I wasn't expecting much from. My goal is to challenge for promotion, but qualifying for DFB Pokal is a huge boost for our struggling finances.

Rich Nazzaro | 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 | 3. Liga | 2022/23 (Season 3)

Summary

I've gotta be honest, I'm really starting to struggle with the team. I feel no connection to them, and it's become a bit of a drag. This was reflected by some real inappropriate expectations I had for this season. I decided to try to keep on the core of my team from last season - and shorted spending on defenders. That didn't go well, although I only had a single loan player this year. We ended up finishing in 9th. Very tough season. Finances are still not looking the best, sitting at Insecure the entire year.

The transfers I did make I felt good about, and I had a few surprises I've carried on into Season 4. I screwed the pooch and let my awesome defender, Lamti, go. This may well be my last season with the team unless I start getting excited about them again. I think, knowing so little about Germany is the problem. Regardless, onwards and upwards!

So far so good in Scotland. Lost our first 4 league games, but since then we've had 4 wins and a draw. Settled into a counter attacking 4-4-2 and I have a fast striker and winger that causing opposing teams serious problems. Strikers scoring and converting one on ones doesn't seem to be an issue so far this year.

Well.. Once again .. That was quick. And probably justified.

After collecting 21 points in my first 17 games and in good position to survive, or star CM Teles breaks his leg. 11 games later and only sitting on 32 points and I'm relieved of my duties.

I simply can't get my narrow tactics to work in this version. Well.. I'll keep trying :seagull:

Gonçalo Brandão | NK Krk | Croatia | 2023/24 (Season 4)

Summary | League Table

I thought survival was going to be a struggle this season, but it turns out Sesvete were so bad we never had any risk - only one relegation spot makes it much easier. Toward the end of the season we were picking up results against the likes of Hajduk and Dinamo, so if we can continue like that who knows what we can achieve? It felt to me like the real turning point was when I changed my DM role in order to support the centre-backs, meaning my wing backs were much freer to maraud upfield.

Ilan Peric was again great for us, and we still can't buy him. I've extended his loan for yet another season, though. The same goes for Dario Stefulj, whose ability to play any of my central midfield roles well meant he was essential to our squad as well. No big former internationals this time around, but James Talbot was solid as my replacement for Subasic (now my U19 GK coach) .
