The FM20 Youth Academy Challenge

Recommended Posts

Just decided to have a go at this in Scotland, just spent the evening doing 50 or so reloads to see what kind of teams I can get and University of Stirling popped up.  As you may already know they are always amateur so if anyone fancies torturing themselves on this challenge then I've uploaded the save file here

The only other always amateur sides that are eligible for this challenge are Corinthian-Casuals and Loughborough Uni and in all my time I've never seen them come up despite multiple reloads and a search on the forum bears out the fact that nobody else has either, in fact i'm sure I've asked the question before myself.

@Makoto Nakamura maybe you'd like to give it a go when you've finished at Leiston?  I thoroughly enjoyed your thread with (always amateur) Team Solent with the expanded database.  I know you love a challenge and this one would be right up there with your toughest

Good luck to anyone who tries this, i'd try it myself but I wouldn't have time to post about it sadly

How on earth has it been so simple to win the title in Iceland?  I may go back to my FC United save as at least it was hard.  Two seasons in Iceland and already won the top flight.  Six seasons in at FC United and still non league.

I had the same back in FM17 with IR. Won the league in the second year after promotion and from then every year. But it took me approximately 20/25 years to win the Europa League and two years later the Champions League.

Gosport Borough Football Club - 2020/21 Season

Manager Profile | League Table | Competition Review | Squad | Finances | Transfers | Facilities

A new challenger enters! It's been a few years since I attempted a youth academy challenge and having got bored of all other saves thought I'd give this another go. I've chosen the south coast team Gosport Borough, who have the most tremendous badge as an added bonus.

First season with the club went very well, promoted as champions at the first time of asking. The final league table actually flatters the other teams as we lost 5 out of our last 10 to stop us breaking through the 100 point barrier, we hit the top spot on matchday 9 and never looked back from there.

We also had a decent run in the FA Cup, reaching the second round before being knocked out by AFC Wimbledon. The cup run did generate a little bit of extra income for the club, however it wasn't enough for any upgrades to our youth recruitment or junior coaching as the board rejected all my requests for updates. Our FA Trophy campaign ended at the first hurdle as we were knocked out by Maidstone after resting half the first team squad.

Key players:

Charlie Davis - A fantastic haul of 18 goals and 19 assists from the right wing. 7 of those goals were penalties, but he's likely to be one of our stand out players for many years to come

Matthew Paterson - The expierenced striker was our top scorer with 25 league goals. However at 31 he probably doesn't have too many more of these seasons in him

Charlie Kennedy - Solid centre back, a little on the slow side but generally a rock in an otherwise leaky defence

Our first youth intake was solid, if unspectacular. We did get a right back who has gone straight into the first team, but other than that a few others will just be squad fillers to help bulk out the squad for next season.

Hayden Atkinson YP21a - A good all rounder who will primarily be used as a right back, but can also play anywhere on the right hand side of the pitch if needed. Will be a first team regular next season

John Butler YP21b - Winger with a little bit of pace and dribbling to work with. Probably won't be needed next season as we have three players who can play on the left wing, but has some potential nonetheless

Shaun Walker YP21c - Not a great player but will go into next season as our reserve left back due to the squad only having one specialist left back

Robert Cook YP21d - Actually a decent set of attributes for a pressing forward with good pace and decent work rate. However his technical attributes are absolutely abysmal. He may get a run out during the season as an impact sub

Aims for next season are of course just to survive. A decent cup run to generate income and update our facilities would also be nice, but establishing ourselves in the division above is the goal at the moment.

2026/2027 - Russian Winter Update

Got quiet a lot to discuss this time round, with League, Europe and Cup action all taking place before the winter shutdown.  Also the Cull that happened at the end of last / start of the season, not to mention off the field antics.  So let's get started...

The Cull

Two players that I had earmarked had been released, it is really a shame but they were not even featuring for the Second Side.  Wee Frolov (20b) did survive though although there is likely to be another cull at the end of this season.

image.thumb.png.980b8c002a1d315a40455924df7ece18.png

The League

Really is a mixed bag of everything this season.  From the highs of beating Rubin Kazan, drawing with Krasnodar and of course losing, twice to Spartak Moscow.  With the shutdown in full flight, we see ourselves 4 points behind a european spot, but more importantly - for now - nine ahead of a relegation playoff place.

image.thumb.png.51a9b621acebd381ff7272b0fadb2066.png

The Cup

Hello Sixth Round, my old friend. Yep, you guessed it knocked out in the sixth round - this time to Dynamo Moscow.

image.thumb.png.53d2e3471de5da16b1f201573f93c6ac.png

The European Conference League

The Club entered into the third qualifying round as the lowest unseeded team.  Our reward for that was a trip to Croatia to play HNK Rijeka.  The first leg being in Croatia we managed to escape with a 3-2 win.  The 4th round draw was then made at this point, and we were seeded due to HNK Rijeka's seeding, which led to a possible tie with either Viitorul Constanța from Romania or Vaduz of Lichtenstein.  But first the second leg, which we also won.  Our first two ever games in Europe were two victories.

image.thumb.png.ca7f102ea7c9669e4832c36d4c822461.png

Viitorul Constanța overcame Vaduz so it was then off to Romania.  This time, we were at home first, and despite losing the away tie we managed to qualify for the group stages.

image.thumb.png.d51a61ec2442f41046090c84c98c6936.png

Again, as with the Third Qualifying Round we were the worst seed in the competition .  Our Group opponents were...

Liga Warszawa (Poland), Ludogorets Razgrad (Bulgaria) and Dundalk (Ireland).  I have to say, it was a very good campaign so far...

image.thumb.png.aac3add0a89a0868e85706f779bc645c.png

Those results, seen us qualify as group winners...

image.thumb.png.b00e240e3d652fb013cc892294bb28d0.png

As Group Winners, we have received a bye into the Second Knockout Round.  With the drawing taking place in late February (currently late December)

Youth Candidates

Another Goalkeeper - just what I wanted.  That makes it 3 in the squad... woohooo, so lucky.

image.thumb.png.818e8b03f28ce20d8a0bcce73ffa05d5.png

Off the Field

The Club have completed the upgrade of the Youth Facilities, but that is not where it ends.  Due to finances from a high league finish and Europe we have managed to do talk the board into upgrading them again.  Not to mention, they have also agreed to upgrade the Training Facilities too.  Both of them should be finished in October 2028

image.thumb.png.14beb9cf6d7bc73ff4eea591b7c3fef3.png

Unfortunately, some bad news it looks like Kiril Polyakov (23a) looks like he will be leaving this summer.  Tried to re-sign him on a new contract, but his agent is asking for £26K a week... my current highest earner is on £3.6K a week   So might have to see if someone will bite, with only 6 months left on his contract.

Table | Squad | Transfers | Finances

I really enjoy playing in League One. No idea why, but I really like this league. I also really like my squad, all of them. And a few things happened this season. First of all, I got a lot of money after Sinisa Fumic 26a got sold from Norwich to Hertha for silly money, and since I had a 50% sell on-clause, half of that silliness went our way. So I got a U23-team set up, and accepted improved facilities all around. Still going to take a few seasons to get the upgrades done, but it's a start. That, of course, made i very annoying that Tottenham gave us a decent bid for our Hyypiä-clone that the chairman accepted. I mean, it was so last second that I got the message of the bid and at the same time it was accepted, so I didn't even have time to protest...

For the league, I had a blast. Even with a small blimp just around the sale our best defender, we were firmly part of the top part of the table. Cardiff, however, ran away early and they looked impossible to catch. But we were leading the group behind for the most of the season. Then Cardiff had a nightmare end to the season. They didn't win for any of the 10 last matches of the season! So, we took advantage of that and climbed above them and clinched the title with a few games to spare. So, I'd like to thank them for that! We are in the Championship next season!

In the FA Cup we beat Cardiff, Portsmouth, Watford and Sheffield Wednesday before losing to Manchester City in the 5th round. In the League cup we beat Luton Town and PL outfit Brighton before losing to Leeds in the 3rd round. In the EFL Trophy we won our group beating Southampton U23s, Wycombe and Luton Town. Then we beat Chelsea U23s, Millwall, Portsmouth and Tottenham U23s to reach the final. Here we crushed Burnley U23s to claim the title!

This season the youth intake was a bit underwhelming. We got a talented goalkeeper in Courtney Derrick 32a, but that was also the only one really worth mentioning. Hopefully, the improved facilities we are getting will continue to help in future seasons. There were so many players contributing this season, I could mention them all, but Mamadú Turé 28a is the real deal. Scores so many goals, and does so well. On the left wing Alan Martin 26f had another stunning season. 18 goals and 16 assists are simply great. Our captain Dara Lehane 25e are pulling all the strings, as always, from his deep playmaker role, while Jonas Sund 29c are really coming along as an attacking midfielder. Further back Garth McKeown 28d took a spot in the team and are helping out with playing out from the back with decent passing skills.

The U18s won the U18 Youth Alliance South-East for the 2nd year in a row. With improved youth level next year perhaps we can get a higher tier soon. In the FA Youth Cup they lost to Luton Town in the 1st round, while in the U18 Youth Alliance Cup they finished 4th in a group containing Portsmouth, Solihull Moors, Exeter City and St. Neots Town.

CD El Edijo 2012 - 2020/21 Season

Transfers - Squad - Table - Profile - Club Info

I've decided to start my first youth challenge at the brilliantly named CD El Edijo, their great training facilities and good youth facilities made them an easy first pick. It was an unspectacular season, ending with a solid place of 12th, but we were in the relegation zone briefly towards the end, a period that we managed to get out of with 2 wins and a draw in our last 3 games. I really think we could have been even more comfortable, but I spent too much time tinkering with tactics which really messed up our league form, plus we were last and second last for goals conceded from corners and indirect free kicks, if we can improve from here there's no reason we can't work towards bridging that 26 point gap!

Forgot to take a picture of my youth intake, but it proved that the facilities are truly providing dividends with "an excellent group of players" coming through!

image.thumb.png.9e44e15f2cff81ad0bd72d63cbad714d.png

The cream of the crop is Pino here, unfortunately he's refusing to sign a new contract (my fault for delaying offering him a professional deal) as teams are now interested in him... I don't think that I'll make that mistake ever again... :seagull:  Really hope he stays as he could be a real star but until then...

Lorenzo Bermudo looks a fantastic prospect, 5 concentration/decision making terrifies me but his key defending stats are otherwise very solid for his age, excited to see how he does. I didn't rate Paulo Ca much at first glance but I can really see him becoming a fixture down the right wing, especially with his 15/13/13 speed stats.

With finishing ratings of 4/5 respectively, Juan Luis and Manuel Jesus Molina need a lot of work if they're going to become strikers, 5 years of finishing training should do the trick!

Also for some reason I've got 3 transfers in shown on my transfer history screen despite not making any and joining on the league reset date... not sure why but I've added my transfer center screen as proof that none were made by me.

Pretty excited by this save, regens are my favorite part of the game and this takes that to the max! Good luck to the rest of you all :)

Also managed to grab this absolute beast of a HOYD by offering him the moon and the entire solar system around it

@Makoto Nakamura congrats, this might be a new start :) You could consider reducing your wage, i don't know if it is possible on FMT, but your salary represents 50% of your players wages lol

I'm surprised how well your attendances are growing despite selling only 20 season tickets. May be those fans have a lot of childrens by now :D

If anything I need more money to keep dealing with this.

I'm glad the attendance is still growing, it's really helping us in our aim for improved facilities.

This guy is probably the best player the club have produced.  I have retrained him to play on the right wing (as my second best player is a striker who struggles to retrain) and he is awesome.  His training ratings are usually 9.75 + (the last three reports have been 10.00) and he has a professional personality.  I have just got him to sign a new five year contract, despite interest from Derby County.  He is rated as a "current League One standard player".

Yes he does look decent for that level

Great news on the new contract (always feels like a bit a win when you tie them down)

For the first time we've finished in the top 10! We were lucky though as we only beat our record points total by one and 67 points is usually only good enough for 12th or 13th.

4th game of my second season at EA Bragança in Portugal and it has been a joy so far (1 loss, 2 wins). Finally having a decent amount of players to work with, especially defenders, seems to have its impact. This victory made me more than happy: both our full backs Silva & Montrond scored a screamer :applause:Montrond is really something special, his stats are abominable but he perfoms extremely well... Played 3 games so far in which he scored and assisted once, having an average rating of 7.50 as a left back.

Let's hope we can keep ourselves away of relegation fear for as long as possible!

2027/2028 Extra Update - Youth Intake

Well our new Youth players have arrived, and I have to say I am over the moon with what they have given me.  One player is good enough to be in the First team, while two more are on the cusp already!  Hopefully it is not a false dawn!

image.thumb.png.a7ca1347fc03d70a5627a821cb2f7fe2.png

The Key Players

Vladimir Yeremeev (28a), 17 - Defensive player who might be my near future ball playing defender. Looks like he could be ready for some first team exposure.  Will need to work on his strength though.

image.thumb.png.621636d7721f1f3d727d0a0a99f4a09a.png

Dmitry Marushko (28b), 16 - Right winger, who is already rated as the second best available to the team.  Goodbye Jankauskas (21a) :(

image.thumb.png.63c8178990ac16ca6922b533dd413c89.png

Ildar Chernov (28c), 16 - Another centre back that looks like he could have a good career here.

image.thumb.png.7b43945d5500d3e38da5cd5c07004ccb.png

Daniil Kondrashov (28d), 16 - Left winger who should turn into a star

Alan Kharlamov (28e), 16 - Striker, who hopefully will live with their promise, as I need an out and out striker.

Sergey Zaitsev (28f), 16 - Our third keeper in three years that will be the number one in future

Youth Intake

Finland is a strange league structure in a way - the way that the Domestic Cup is played is that it is done after you have played 4 league matches - we seem to be the only team that takes it seriously and as such were winners for the 3rd time and this guaranteed that European Football was on the cards for next season - this made the remaining 29 league matches fairly irrelevant as we were never going down and were never likely to catch the teams going for the title. We finished 5th but injuries and suspensions hit us hard. Our best ever European campaign is still going on as we are in the 2025/26 Europa League Group Stages - a 7-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge was countered by beating the Blues of Chelsea 3-2 in Finland - at the time of writing we sit 3rd.

That 3rd Soumen Cup victory has been enough to get me into the Finnish Hall of Fame which was a nice bonus - we have also completed our full complement of licenses and have convinced the board to improve the Youth Recruitment and Junior Coaching - It's bloody lovely having some European cash at our disposal now.

A season which was tinged with sadness, 1A Teemu Syväjärvi who is out of contract at the end of the season and point blank refusing to sign a new deal looks set to leave the club and likely retire from the game at the age of 22 - he broke his leg at the back end of the season and will miss the next 7 months or so - he managed 211 matches for me and was the first example of a decent player produced from our own academy. He might surprise me and remain Non-Contract but i have my doubts.

Two guys jointly held the top scorer honour, 4A Iñigo Casado backed up his 22 last season with 24 this season - bringing his tally to 50 for the club, the first newgen to achieve this landmark and he has continued to represent Spain at U20 level. He was supported by 5B Juuso Ilola who has come from nowhere really to become a near indespensible rock up front. The ever dependable 3A Rolf Isokangas was well, ever dependable - although 12 yellows and 2 red is a record for the league which I doubt he really wants.  6A Mikko Rantala had a nicely solid 1st season as first choice RM and a call up to Finland U19 at the end of the season (without playing sadly).

In terms of fresh blood:

7A Petteri Perälä is a timely addition for the Left Back slots - my best two options will probably depart and Petteri will give me some depth there - he doesn't look very good but he might develop into something approaching a back up option

I've got a link up with Chennai City in India, and they have allowed me to have a 5* potential striker - 7B Michael Praveen, a debut goal suggests he has something. Very much can be put in the bracket of "not ready, let's wait and see"

On paper 7C Ari Sundman is probably the best of the bunch, but I have classed him as my 3rd best as he plays in a position that we don't use - so he is currently learning the deeper MC role, his attributes suggest that he is decent with the ball at his feet and he will make things happen.

We've definately had better Intakes - we normally get someone who can get into our 11 but I don't think we have anything yet that troubles that 11, most likely places on the bench, unless we have injuries.

2027/2028 Season Review - A Good Season

Well my 300th game, which coincided with the last game of the season was not the win I wanted, but we did draw and it was good enough to get us a 5th place finish, and another season in the European Conference League.  A shame we could not get a place higher like last season, as this year it offered a Europa League place as Zenit have been banned from Europe, moving all places available down one place.

Although the league positions were not as high, or the wins as numerous we were well good for the place.

The League

The European Conference League

After topping the Group Stage, ahead of Legia Warszawa my price was a Second Knockout Round match against Ligia Warszawa... Unfortunately this time it did not turn out so well.  And I as manager, take full responsibility by getting my tactics wrong.  A mild injury crisis around this time did not help either.

image.thumb.png.3a7ddc63c5041b09d3d211bc4fc4e29b.png

I did get to be the team tagged as "biggest overachievers"

image.thumb.png.95c8c0f5b39b2aa48bf9d43482cd625d.png

As for the coming season, I will begin the campaign in the 4th and final qualifying round as an unseeded side on the account that the best teams qualify.

Off the Field

Another Cull is coming, further details to come in the next up-date.

We had a club board takeover as well, and they have gone to work right away, expanding the Training and Youth facilities, although it will now take longer than the October has promised

Also managed to get Kiril Polyakov (23a) down from wanting £28K a week to accepting £8K a week, through to 2032.

End of Season Review

Season 2025/26

FC United of Manchester

Errea is named new technical sponsor of FC United of Manchester!

League Table - We won the league by eleven points, such was our dominance.

League Fixtures 1, 2 & 3 - Despite losing our first two games of the campaign, we recovered well and had long unbeaten runs.  Which was just as well as just like last season, our form towards the end of the season was patchy to say the least.

F. A. Cup - A sensational cup run, one of my best ever, as we made it through to the last sixteen before being annihilated 7-1 by Liverpool at Anfield.  Still, we made a lot of money from the cup run.

F. A. Trophy - We equalled our best ever performance by reaching the semi finals being being hammered by Bradford City over two legs, 6-1 on aggregate.  We just did not turn up.

Pre Season Friendlies - Three defeats this year, all to much bigger clubs.

Squad - All of the players are on very long contracts so if I can keep hold of them all, we should do well.

Squad Dynamics - As you would expect from a winning side, everyone gets on.

Transfers In - None.

Transfers Out - Just the one departure of note, a promising youngster who was struggling to retrain because he plays in a position we do not use.  I did insert a hefty sell on clause, so hopefully he will come good.

Youth Candidates - A so called "Golden Generation" that I just can't see, though Lewis Thomas YP26A81 looks like he could develop into a star.

Finances - The cup run has swelled the bank balance.

Key Players

Anthony Connelly YP23F38 - Striker who, despite having a low ability to finish, can't stop scoring.  An unbelievable return of 39 goals in his 48 appearances.

Stuart Bloomfield YP23G39 - Striker who I have converted into a right winger.  The best player at the club.

Özer Demir YP22C19 - Playing on the left wing, he, alongside Bloomfield & Connolly, terrorised defences all season.

Dean Curran YP21C3 - Central defender who is a lynchpin of the side.  Has made over 230 appearances for the club.

Davidson Nelson YP24E53 - Left back who can also fill in anywhere across the back four.  Has a superb relationship with Özer Demir YP22C19 down the left.

Next Season

Is a play off push being greedy?

XaW - Folkestone Invicta - 2032/33

200px-Folkestone_Invicta_F.C._logo.png

Table | Squad | Transfers | Finances

This summer I kept all the players I wanted, and I've tried even better to bring some youngsters into the main squad. Since it was our first season in the Championship I were unsure how well we would fare, compared to the other teams in the league. And as it turns out, we can do fine. At the start we did well, but we had some big losses when our main players were injured or had to rest. And that's kind of my issue at the moment. I have a very good 13-14 players, but the ones outside that core is only suitable to a league or two below us. But that's part of the challenge, so I'm trying to blood more youngsters with high potential instead of the "good enough" older players I would like to use. Approaching the end of the season, we had an outside chance of reaching the playoffs, but fell a bit short. Not that I mind, I'm expecting a few years in the Championship before we are anything close to competing for promotion to the PL

In the FA Cup we lost to Burnley in the 3rd round. In the League cup we beat Forest Green, Charlton and Derby County before losing to Liverpool in the 4th round.

After the poor intake last time, the youth intake this year was simply great! I could mention a lot, but the two I'll show is Dave McPhee 33b, a very promising attacking midfielder, and Jamie Masters 33d, probably the most talented Gibraltarian right back ever. Mamadú Turé 28a once again were amazing up top and top scorer as usual. Alan Martin 26f also continues his amazing showing on the left wing. In my attempt to play more youngsters, I also swapped out my goalkeeper for Courtney Derrick 32a. He is also taking pens and freekicks, because why not.

The U23s doesn't play in any leagues, so only friendlies there.

The U18s won the U18 Youth Alliance South-East for the 3rd time running. In the FA Youth Cup they lost to Manchester City in the 3rd round, while in the U18 Youth Alliance Cup they finished 2nd in a group containing MK Dons, Forest Green, Walsall and Dover, but it was not enough to go through.

Hitchin 2021/2022 season:

image.thumb.png.ceda63cf65f2e9124fc8e9e32fedf529.png

A much better season this year, despite finishing 1 position lower there were 5 less loses.

The goal difference is much closer to where it should be compared to the rest of the table finish position (scored more and conceded less)

Goals were more evenly spread out this season. Assists provided by Jordan Davies 21c. Came in to the youth team as an attacking left midfielder but the data suggested he would be better as a CM. Re-training and 40 appearances he is now a natural in the position and progressing well, potentially could be a good player for a few years:

First team:

Vast improvement in the team this year with 5 players (4 young) deemed decent for avoiding relegation and most are close the to the “good” score of 50. Det+WR only 1 “lazy” player remaining and most greatly improved.

Youth Intake 2022:

A few players here who are very close to first team appearances already. Luke Ryan 22a already in first team to act as cover.
