iacovone's Savona End of Season Update - 2009/10

Ok so overall a very tidy first season at the helm. We weren't rolled over by anybody and were always competitive with our mix of youth and dinosaurs (;)). We ended up coming 8th which was more than given that we were only looking to survive. So the finances are a mess so we could really do with a takeover!

The Best XI looked like this and Sabs picked up the fans player of the year. The skipper led the team superbly. He would also be my player of the year.

Aims for next season are to secure at least an 8th place finish. I'm always looking for bargains and to improve the overall quality of the squad. So here's to an even better 2nd season

Ok so here is a little sneak preview of my latest signings. The squad still doesn't have much depth and I can't really change this as my wage budget is so small so I'm going to have to hope for an injury free season!

Anyway here they are:

Davide Savarino - A useful experienced head in midfield. Looks like a strong leader.

Federico Salerno - A very promising GK, only 17 years old but a big presence.

Vladimir Koman - Not too sure how I bagged this guy on loan. Could be a star!

Giovanni Buriani - A promising CB who is being trained as a RB. Will get some gametime this year.

Antonio Zinni - Outstanding prospect in the Italian game, I identified him last year as just a 16 year old, now I have him for a year. He could be special

Basically I need another CB and possibly a CM as I'm switching to a 4-3-3 this year. If I can find a bit of experience out there I'd almost get dangerously optimistic!

Oh god you would be able to rule the world with that amount of money so early on, my team still is sitting at -500k, propped up by the board adding 55k to 100k every month, so after 4 years getting that amount of money they have probably put 4-5 million into the club and the only return is 2 championships a manager of the year award and promotion :p

Oh please please let it be true!!

EDIT: Well this would be quite frankly absurd

fingers crossed for you iacovone..... well done on your first season - great achievement.

with regards to Oviedo, hopefully it MIGHT be smoother as it's only supposed to be another board member taking over. I'd love a takeover like that though!!

some good sigings there iacovone... Saverino looks a solid midfielder, Salerno looks a great prospect, and the loan signings Koman and Zinni look great. Will be interesting to see how the new team lines up and performs...

To be honest if this takeover does happen I can't see how it would affect my team that much. I'd try to use the money to improve facilities mainly I think. Obviously there would be a few signings - I should get out of C2C quite quickly but theres only so much I could do with 10m at a club of this reputation.

The signings rlipscombe have done well so far. I have Zinni and Koman on opposite flanks in an attempt to terrorize the opposition full backs. However I've still not found a formation that utilises them perfectly so far. I'm playing a 4-5-1 at the moment but we're just not scoring enough goals. We were unbeaten for our first 6 league games but just lost 1-0 at home to Monopoli so I need another rethink :(

Haha, the same happened to me, orginally my chairman had planned to do the extensions but my computer restarted itself and the when i loaded up and it got to the same point where he decided to scrap the ideas. He then got annoyed after the first time of asking for an upgrade to both, however, by the end of the season he accepted my requests to both, and iacovone i am actually in spain

So where has Amir Cohen's money been spent?

Well the Savona squad list now reads like a who's who of lower division Italian prospects. The average age of the first 11 may be only 20 but there is a lot of talent on show. However despite all this we have been having a pretty poor season :thdn:

We became the draw specialists and as of 16th Jan 2011 we are languishing in 14th!

Goals have been the big problem - partly due to my 1 up front obsession this year and partly because of the absolute inability of the 2 options I have to actually score! So this next few months are vital as I doubt Mr Cohen will be too happy with a relegation battle :(

Pasquale Rossi - A very promising defender, possibly too small to be a CB. He has no real weaknesses and is still only 16!

Luca Lubrani - A very gifted full back who could be a main stay for years. Shame about his pace but this might improve to the 10-12 range with a bit of training. Like him a lot.

Alessandro Lanzoni - Talented AMLC. Ideally he is here to be the left winger. Technically very talented, shame about the crossing though :thdn:

Ferdinando Guariniello - Technically gifted winger but lacking in a bit of pace. Hopefully his physical stats will improve in time.

Roberto Petruzzelli - Expected to sign in a couple of days. A determined pacey CM who I hope can become a box to box CM for us.

signed some real quality youngsters there iacovone.... Guarinello looks like a real star of the future. Lubrani looks quality too.

think you've gone down the right route in regards to the money - might just need the odd experienced player. as alan hansen, you'll win nothing with kids.... ;)

ferdinando " dinosauro" Guariniello looks a good player shame he doesnt have the pace but nevermind a good one for the future you could train him as an AMC .

Lanzoni looks great his technical atributes look good and at 17 though you'll be able to improve that crossing stat a great prospect.

Luca "dinosauro" Lubrani. looks great prospect for you could be your fullback for many years.

you have some great players there good luck mate

Good luck rlipscombe, how close are you to the playoffs?

Bad news - Petruzzelli signed for Levski in the end :(

Never fear, iacovone always has an ace up his sleeve...

i'm about 5 points clear of 5th with 6 games to go.... SHOULD be ok.....

I can't understand how its come to this but with 7 games to go we are 4th from bottom

Even with the talent at our disposal there has been so much disappointment this year. I'm not going to go too in depth until the End of Season report because we really are in a very real danger of ending up in the relegation playoffs at this rate :thdn:

iacovone's End of Season Update - Savona 2010/11

One of the toughest seasons I've ever had on FM. It was such an odd experience. We began the year well losing only once in our first 8 games IIRC. Our defence was solid but early signs showed we were going to struggle to score. Then came the takeover from Amir Cohen a Kuwaiti tycoon intent on seeing Savona rise to the top of Italian football. Now despite the 10m added to our coffers I still wanted to pursue promotion according to my philosophies - ie. the discovery of youth. That meant in January I shopped for predominantly U20 prospects. Now never before in FM has this posed problems for me, however this time, no matter what talent I had on the pitch at my disposal we were getting outplayed and outscored by very mediocre teams. I altered the formation so many times but to no avail. Looking back on the season the obvious problem was the complete absence of a goalscorer. No-one got a decent run going and my 33 year old forward Lucas Gatti failed to score in over 2000 minutes of football  - shocking. The general feeling in my head was that we were never in any real danger of relegation but we were always stuck in or around the relegation playout spots. I was happy with the technical quality in the team but these players have an awful lot of growing up to do if we are going to push on and get out of this league. Here is the league graph detailing just how poor we were (in fact since the takeover its just been downhill in the league). The end of the season was tense and even though we picked up 13 points from our last 8 games (believe me that was actually quite good) we only just finished outside the relegation places as this table shows!

So now to the individuals that made this season what it was

Carmine Giardino had the highest average rating of 7.05 in all comps by the end of the season. Now that is depressing. Nevertheless well done to the versatile defender. I may just give him a new contract after that.

Top Goalscorer goes to Antonio Conti with a mesmerizing 6. :thdn:. Though young I expected better of him.

Most assists came from Antonio Zinni the man I mistakenly viewed as a real star of the future. He was pretty poor overall for us.

Biggest disappointment for me was definitely either Conti or Gatti. The forwards really let us down.

Honourable Mention must go to Federico Salerno in goal. He was excellent for the majority of the season and has shown glimpses of real star quality this year. So young still. The only problem he now faces is the signing of Giordano Liguori on a free transfer. He is currently heading to the U20 World Cup with Italy

Finally for the most tackles per game my boy 'Sabs' must be honoured. Though this is probably his last season as a definite starter he has been valuable to us all year.

Carmine Giordano picked up the Fans POY Award so I guess I have to renew his contract now.

Finally the Best XI for the Season and the Best Ever XI

Now I can't promise all my reports will be as detailed as this one ;)

For some reason despite the complete lack of success I really got into this season. It will be remembered for a couple of things. Amir Cohen's takeover and multi-million pound funding and Lucas Gatti's 2000+ minutes without a goal.

2011-12 - Time to finally push for those promotion playoff spots. Just need a goalscorer now.......
