LINFIELD – SEASON 2012-13

Another 2nd place finish, this time secured on the last day with a draw against archrivals Glentoran, secured by an icing-on-the-cake goal by Doyle to make it 2-0. They eventually pulled it back to 2-2, but a draw was all we needed on the day, pipping Glenavon to 2nd place on goal difference. We also secured another Antrim Cup win. Still a long way behind Glentoran, though, in the final league standings – 18 points back despite an impressive head to head record against them of P27 W7 D14 L6 since I took over. Also, a big year financially as the club makes a profit of well over £3m, almost doubling the club’s bank balance, mainly due to some prudent friendly tournaments raking in huge gate receipts. I’ve also been getting job offers from English clubs as high-profile as Watford and, more recently, MK Dons so someone must approve of what I’m doing! This has also resulted in quite a lot of work being done on my training facilities which should help. Want to improve youth facilities really…for obvious reasons. Oh and my reserve team (the Linfield Swifts) won the Antrim Trophy – beating Bangor in the final, a team who were just moments away from promotion to the top flight at the end of season relegation playoff against Donegal Celtic, before cruelly losing on away goals.

Fell back a little this year, and if he wasn’t a YP Project, I’d definitely move him on, as I could probably get close to a million for him. But for a set-back season, he still performed well enough. An electrifying end to the season masked some rather average performances and several goal droughts of 1000+ minutes. Nearly ¼ of the way to the magic 1000 mark now!! He also has 5 U21 caps now.

Moved to Distillery and had a complete ‘mare. But a 1 year contract and my scouts sensing something in him means he’ll be returning to Linfield next year. I doubt he’ll play that much but he might get a little more footy than he did this year. He’s also played a lot better at Linfield than anywhere else.

LINFIELD – SEASON 2012/13

Keith Tracey – Summer 2013 Update.

Improved his clean sheet ratio to just shy of 50% this season which is really impressive. However, also got his first red card – ironically enough, with his first foul of his career! So his current stats read 1 foul, 1 red card! Tough luck, Keith! Despite a much improved goals conceded ratio, his AvR fell very slightly this year, but he’s solid enough as a keeper. I do have better than him in the squad, but currently, he’s the frontrunner in the race for 1000 apps, with more appearances per season than anyone else. He’s the only one who is on course to do it in a 20 year career, with an average of exactly 50 games per season so far.

David Mullan – Summer 2013 Update.

Continued his impressive start to his career, and was rewarded by a 2nd place finish in the SENIOR player of the year awards in only his 2nd season. See a later post for details on that. Impressive. This guy is seriously, seriously, good. Impressive number of assists, you’ll see – making him the leading goal-creator in the league. He’s been rewarded with a new contract on £2,400pm, making him the equal 6th highest player in the squad. This after only 2 seasons in senior football…and he also picked up three U21 caps this year (one was after the screenshot was taken before you try to catch me out!).

Glenn Malone – Summer 2013 Update.

…if you thought Miskelly was indisciplined, think again. This was a real shocker of a season in terms of discipline for Malone, and this cut down his appearances drastically. When he did play, however, he had a decent season. Only Mullan has had a drastically better season than this guy. Hopefully he can improve to become a real player. He’s already got 1 U21 cap to his name, during his first season…unusual.

Currently that means they’re also in order of regeneration year, but that will probably change next year as Tracey looks certain to overtake Miskelly. It is just about possible that the YPs could pass 1000 appearances between them next season, but given that Miskelly will probably not be a regular, I’d think it unlikely. LINFIELD – SEASON 2012-13

I’ll now give you a summary of the various events/stats etc of the summer, with screenshots for the important ones for my YPs.

**I have mentioned it above, but Dave Mullan came 2nd in the SENIOR player of the year awards at the age of just 18!

**I only came 3rd in the manager of the year awards which was disappointing.

**Mark Miskimmon was voted Linfield’s player of the season for a 2nd consecutive year.

**All 4 of the YPs at the club made it into the best XI for the season.

**David Mullan became the 4th YP to make it into the Historical XI. I’d expect Miskelly wont last much longer there though. We’ll see.

**For the first time, we got a decent transfer kitty!!!

**AND PERHAPS THIS WAS WHY?! WAHOOOOOO.

He obvioulsy doesn't have good facilities, so the fact is, thats what he gets. You do understand the rules here, GOM, right? You have to select the player your assman chooses as your "Youth Player". Its vital he is from your youth academy. You can't just use any 16 year old that you've signed that you think has a bright future. Thats not the point of the challenge.!!

No - he's always someone from my academy - i dont always take my AssMan's word for who is the best though. I have a look through them...often i do go with him, but from memory i think Mullan wasnt the one my AssMan picked out, and look what he's doing (and by the way, he and several other YPs are having breakthrough years this year - Mullan looks like he might end up being a really world-class player!!). There was no rule saying we have to go with the "best" from each crop of youngsters, and I've never treated that line as gospel. I usually take about 10-15 minutes comparing the cohorts before making a decision....

PS I know its not really relevant but as a gooner, I'm quite pleased to see the progress of this guy!! Over £70m in transfer fees already and he's only 24!! I've been getting quite excited about him IRL in the last couple of years, too...with any luck he'll turn out this good....

I am managing in Ireland GOM, i do have a youth academy but still its a pretty poor league/reputation. Facilities aren't great either. As the team/club progresses the players will get better.

General consensus is to use your Assman pick, not your own, but on the odd occasion when another player is better you can use him.
