Smurf and anyone else helping in this topic is amazing. I want to upgrade but didn't have the first clue about processors and graphics cards these days.

So I'm looking for a 'good' FM machine. Ive played on stadia this year but missing graphics and custom databases too much.

Would prefer a laptop but desktop will be considered up to 7/800 if it's capable of running FM to a high standard and maybe some other sim games like cities skylines or planet zoo.

Got my eye on these twoScreenshot_20201013_101547_org.mozilla.firefox.thumb.jpg.40206958bbab793a9d199a2225af11ae.jpg, what do you think?

There is also a higher end one I'm looking at but think it's too over the top for what is essentially a Football Manaher machine

You're better off going for the best you can afford.

Where both are excellent - there's always one better than the other.

I'd highly recommend the Ryzen 7 4800H if you can.

Desktop - have you got a monitor?

I probably can but 400 more when it won't be doing much more than a journey man save seems excessive. I've also got a baby on the way so gaming may become a thing of the past.

Yes I already have a desktop but the graphics and processor let it down. It's becoming much more of a home office pc

Buy cheap - buy twice. Take the advantages now and get something for longevity rather than it will do for now.

Hi,

Hoping for some help with buying a new laptop

FM is the only game I’ll ever buy. Other than that will just be internet browsing. So not looking for a gaming laptop and nothing too heavy, but I'd want a min 14 or 15" display.

My budget is £500, could possibly stretch to ones priced £600 as certain brands/retailers have student discount.

On FM20 I ran 4-5 nations with large database (3D match engine) and would like to do similar for FM21 & beyond or with a couple more nations running. My current laptop is 6 years old so has struggled with this on FM20 as I built up a long save during lockdown.

Any recommendations for what specs I would need or a particular laptop they'd recommend? From what I've seen so far then an integrated graphics card should be fine, as would 8GB RAM as I can't see any 16GB in my budget where I've looked so far. But when it comes to Processer/Hard Drive I'm a bit overwhelmed.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Smurf I’ve seen you’ve recommended this earlier in the thread which is just about in my price range - https://www.box.co.uk/81LK0039UK-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Gaming-L340-15_2934443.html

I’ve also seen this when researching myself, I’ll get £50 discount with Currys and it looks to be a bit more  lightweight which would be more convenient. https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-5-a515-43-15-6-amd-ryzen-7-laptop-256-gb-ssd-black-10193895-pdt.html

Is there much of a difference between the two? I’m not going to load up dozens of nations so don’t sure If a dedicated gaming laptop is necessary

The Lenovo has a slightly stronger CPU on top of having a dedicated graphics card, so is still overall a stronger machine.  That said, the Acer will still handle FM just fine.

I agree with kevhamster - but on the fact that it's a better processor by virtue that it won't be throttled under stress.

I'd go with the Lenovo easily.

That's one of the strongest laptop CPU's in the market currently, so I'd imagine it'll be able to handle a decent number of leagues.

Hiya

Long time lurker in this thread J

I’ll try and keep it to a mimimum,

I currently /used to have a Lenovo z510 (Lenovo Z510 15.6-inch Laptop - Black (Intel Core i7-4702MQ 2.2GHz, 8GB RAM) purchased in 2014

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Z510-15-6-inch-Laptop-i7-4702MQ/dp/B00HR6TYZC

it appears I’m  am now in the market for a new laptop as my two year-old decided to lean on the power port (with cord in) and snapped the board inside.

After taking on the advice in this thread and looking at various options, I’ve decided that maybe going for a gaming laptop would be better. I’m moving more towards the ryzen 4600h models as they seem to be the best value.

The models i have

I quite liked the look of asus tuf a15 to begin with (it looked on the sturdy side), however after hearing the problems on youtube regarding the heat vents etc.. I decided to knock that on the head.

This sort of left me floating around the acer nitro 5, and in particular (Acer Nitro 5 AN515-44)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-AN515-44-Display-Windows-Headset/dp/B089BM56BH/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Acer+Nitro+5+AN515-44+15.6+Inch+Gaming+Laptop&qid=1602596403&s=computers&sr=1-2.

The other option seems to be the hp pavilion gaming 15-ec1007na.

https://www.box.co.uk/1L6F6EAABU-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-15-ec1007na_2958258.html

Both these machines look quite good , however .. i've notice that the acer has   a refresh rate of 144hz, whilst the pavillion doesn’t mention anything about it (unless I missing it).

Does this really matter?

asides from fm, the only other games i can see myself  playing are the likes of Grand theft auto and resident evil.

Also is it worth me waiting until black friday to see if anything else is available?

The refresh rate means the display can display a higher FPS.  This primarily would make a real difference for competitive online games, although you will see a difference in other games as well (FM less so to be honest).

Regardless, I would go with the Acer as it has the Ti version of the 1650 which is a fair bit stronger than the standard 1650 in the HP on Box, especially if you're planning on buying the new Resident Evil coming out next year as I'm gonna guess that may be quite a demanding title.

This is the closest equivalents I can find on Currys, although it is not an exact match.

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/gaming/pc-gaming/gaming-pcs/lenovo-legion-t5-gaming-pc-intel-core-i7-gtx-1660-super-512-gb-ssd-10205978-pdt.html

I can however vouch that this would be a beast of a computer.  I have a desktop with the same graphics card and same amount of RAM, but slightly weaker CPU (Ryzen 5 3600) and that handles everything I've thrown at it with ease.

Thanks.  Do you think that is overkill for Football Manager, a few RPG games and then general stuff like internet, kids school work, emails etc?

I'm not even sure how much I'd use it for other games as I'm mainly a console player although this could actually make me learn to set PC up through TV and use a gamepad ha

If your talking just FM, net surfing, basic office packages then you could downgrade,  but then check the specs of the other RPG games  as they could be more intensive than FM.

Also bear in mind if its a machine you plan to keep for yrs game specs will keep increasing so no harm to have a machine that will safely handle everything  but that machine would be a dream for FM :)

the ones on PC Specialist would be better as they won't come loaded with bloatware.

You came here for advice and I appreciate that. I recommend you take the advice.

You can of course look up similar Processor/Ram/Graphics cards specs anywhere you like.

What RPG games do you play? The graphics card choice would be overkill purely for FM, but some RPG games are very demanding so if you list what titles you're into (and any upcoming games you're interested in) we'd be better placed to say for sure.

I didn't see your original post but Smurf knows his stuff so I'd assume he had a reason to go with the selection he did.

Didn't see this reply before my own reply. Agree with this in that it is better to go the custom route for the reasons Smurf has stated. Prebuilt systems like the ones in Currys in the like will have a load of software added in by the manufacturer which take up space and can impact performance.

Going with custom builders like PC Specialist and Cyberpower UK (both of which I have personally used and can recommend) averts that sort of issue.

I also meant to add be careful of how people review, they (people in general) are quite dense.

Some reviews I read gave top computers 1 star and the reason was it didn't come with an Operating System, but clearly states it has no OS installed.

Another said the power cord wasn't long enough and gave it 1 star.

Another one said some packaging wasn't able to go in the recycling (nothing about the computer).

Beware of reviews!

Been reading the excellant views and replies, particularly Smurfs. I'm finally biting the bullet and replacing my old Asus x550c i5 6gb ram machine. FM19 and 20 have really slowed down in terms of processing to annoying levels. For me I always love playing with lots of leagues, custom graphics (i.e player face packs, logo's, kits etc) but in the last two editions i've had to massively cut back on the leagues I have running and not use face packs at all as it simply add ridiculously long processing wait simply loading a player up.

Ideally I dont want to spend over £1000 but looking in the 16gb ram, i7 (or comparative) upwards ball park. Graphics are not the be all and end all for me but would be nice Do you have any suggestions on Box or even the amazon prime sale today. There is just so many to chose from I really don't want to choose poorly.

Any help massively appreciated

Is the i5 10750h a big difference compared to a i5 10300h, when it comes to FM?  Can it run more leagues/nations faster or is the i5 10300h fast enough?

Did you mean the i7-10750h?  I can't see an i5-10750h listed.

Comparing the two here: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-10750H-vs-Intel-Core-i5-10300H/m1053158vsm1027882

This shows that the i7 is definitely the better performer out of the two, but the i5 is a capable chip and should offer a decent performance.  I would suggest the i7 out of the two though if it's within your budget.

So how many more leagues/nations can u have compared to the i5 10300h?

Honestly, I couldn't say.  Anything like that is guesswork.

Both processors are very capable, both will be decent for FM.  But the I7 is stronger.

Shouldn't be an issue.  My laptop with a Ryzen 5 2500U, which is weaker than both, had no problem with 8 nations.

Thanks. You have been a huge help!
Justifying 300 or so more for an i7, seem ridiculous when you put it like that ha. The most leagues/nations I will have is probably 5 or less. When doing a English non league to legend. I couldn’t do that as my laptop broke a few mouths ago and could barely run fm and championship to prem was slow(even just the prem for a season) from the start ha. So anything gotta be faster ha.

Buy cheap - buy twice. Take the advantages now and get something for longevity rather than it will do for now.

£1000 if you want to go for it

Although this has no dedicated graphics cards (playing other games might be a struggle) - as it's a desktop you can add a graphics card at a later time. For FM it would be fine on low-mid settings

What level of details would a 1660 Ti max-q will be able to deliver in 3D mode?

Also, what level of details would a 2060 max-q will be able to deliver in 3D mode?

Yep, all round very nicely specced.

Thanks for the help. Think I’ll go for this. Doesn’t appear to be out yet but pre order an states release only a few days away.

just wanna get back to old days when I could run fm how I wanted it. Fair few leagues, face packs, logos, kits, without the 5 hour processing wait. Lol.

my old ASUS has sadly fallen way behind.

been scouring the net for weeks unable to settle on a firm choice.

Both graphics cards will deliver max settings on 3D.  FM is not a graphically demanding game.  I can play on a mix of medium and high settings on my Ryzen laptop's integrated graphics with no issues or visual lag.

Do you play another games other than FM?  If not, you could get by with a much more basic graphics card than either of those two.

If you do play other games, it would really be those that should define your graphics card choice.

That CPU has a very low base clock speed, so I'd steer clear of these.

Okay thanks. I don't know an awful lot about specs so this is helpful.

I'm looking for a new laptop, for £600 or under, that can run a couple of leagues. I don't use 3D at all. It's going to be used purely for FM and for work, which for me is basic office stuff. Have you got any suggestions?

As long as you're happy with the relatively low amount of storage, this will do the job quite nicely: https://www.box.co.uk/M413IA-EB573T-ASUS-Vivobook-14-M413IA-EB573T_2955297.html

Or, if you need more storage, this one: https://www.box.co.uk/M413DA-EB211T-ASUS-VivoBook-14-M413DA-EB211T_2954892.html
