Hi mate, look no further than this beauty if you want something cheap, but also good enough for FM. And it comes with a warranty as well.

https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/grade-a1-lenovo-v330-14arr-amd-ryzen-5-2500u-8gb-256gb-14-inch-windows-10-a1-81b1001euk/version.asp

It has everything that you need to play FM, even the iGPU is better than the ones Intel has integrated in their CPU's. In regards to the brand, I personally vouch for Lenovo, since I owned 5 laptops from them, mid and high-end segment and the construction / reliability is truly top-notch.

The issue with that one is that, whilst the processor can theoretically hit 3.6GHz, it's got a poor Thermal Design Power, meaning that when it is put under a lot of strain, like FM, it will be heavily reducing the processing speed in order to stop it from overheating, and the base processor clock speed, 2GHz, is below minimum spec, and so will quite possibly run poorly and unstably.

@JordanMillward_1

Your concern is valid, but if you do run MSI afterburner while playing FM, you will notice that the only time when the CPU is really under stress is when processing through days. Now, when that stops, and you do whatever, the CPU cools down. When you play a match is not considered stress, unless you multi-task because the match engine simply doesn't need all that much CPU power (again, tested with Afterburner). The overheating issues may occur if you keep the laptop on your lap or something like this, otherwise you can play FM without overheating issues none whatsoever.

With this in mind, are the any other alternatives with a similar price to compare it to?

Seems like quite a good bit of kit for the price (except battery life). However, I'm not as clued up as I used to be.

You will find alternatives, but all of them will have Intel HD graphics which is not as good as AMD integrated graphics, which truly makes a difference when every FPS matter (in budget laptops). I have dealt with all kinds of laptops in the past and I can tell you for a fact that I never had / seen a laptop overheating from just playing FM. It will overheat if you play fm and have a 1080p youtube video playing in the background and multiple tabs opened. But as long as you stick to FM when you play the game and nothing else, there is no such thing as overheating. I will post  youtube video in about an hour, just so you can see how FM uses resources.

Looking for a laptop for general use, Netflix, storing photos, web browsing, word etc.. Only game I play is FM. I don’t really want a gaming laptop, just something that will run FM well. I live in Australia my budget is $1500 - £750, I could stretch that upto a £1000 if really needed to.

I’m not fussed about 3D but if you have some recommendations for both that’d be really helpful. Prefer bigger screen but again not fussed, just want options

Any particular website you use in Australia?

I've found this one that'd run FM very well, full 3D and a large database/number of leagues for $1596. It'd also run most new games at medium/high graphics: https://www.harveynorman.com.au/msi-gv628re-15-6-inch-gaming-laptop.html

Otherwise, I've found this one that has the same specs but a lesser graphics card, which would still run FM as well as the one above, but run newer games at lower graphics settings, for $1298: https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-nitro-5-an515-52-573k-15-6-inch-laptop.html

Thanks Jordan but was trying to stay away from the gaming laptops as FM will be the only game I play. Looking for an all round laptop

The issue is that, to play FM well, you need a decent processor, and the processors below the one in the laptops I posted are ones that are not designed for heavy loads such as those caused by FM, and so FM would run poorly. There's no point spending around $1000-1500 on a laptop if it's not going to hold up and would need replacing to play FM well within a couple of years.

@Lukeyardley

This is a gaming laptop, that doesn't scream "gaming". This is your dream my friend: an extremly powerful CPU - i7 8750H, combined with 16GB DDR4 and a decent GTX 1050. This laptop is the dream of every FM player because you only really need a powerful CPU and fast RAM (which this one has plenty of) and just a decent enough GPU to complement it. The GTX 1050 is more than enough to play FM in 3D flawlesly. I have used this laptop for about 2 days, even though it had a different configuration (i5 +1050 Ti) and was beasting through FM. It's one of the best designs of 2018, has all the ports on the back which makes the desk look clean and the cooling solution is amazing. I mean ... for FM this is THE DREAM. Yes, there are cheaper alternatives, but in this price range you will not really find this kind of build quality and those specs.

I’m so glad you recommenced this one! I’ve been looking for months and this was the very first one I came across and was really looking into. I think I will go with this one, what’s everyone else’s thoughts on it? Jordan, Smurf? Thank you Sebastian.

Ticks all your boxes, but not the large screen - but at the price range you are looking at you won't get much better or bigger.

Hi all,

Great thread, and a big thank you to those who take the time out of their day to advise on suitable and recommendations in this thread.

I'm looking to upgrade/switch from my current desktop to a laptop.

My current desktop PC purchased in 2012 actually runs FM to a decent level - I'm looking to mirror or preferably improve on my old desktop performance to a laptop.

I've had a look at trying to benchmark my current PC to new specs for laptops but I'm getting nowhere with all the nomenclature.

Can anyone please provide options to match and preferably better the existing specs on a new laptop with

Option 1) Max Budget =£500

Option 2) Max Budget = £600

My requirements or must haves - non refurbished, backlit keyboard, full HD (1920x1080) screen and 8GB RAM minimum.

My current desktop PC specs:

CPU = Core I5 3330 CPU 3.00GHZ

8GB  RAM

GPU = 2TB Radeon HD6670

Thanks

Hey mate, to be fair, at about £500 you can't really get anything worthwhile in terms of cost / performance for a laptop that plays FM well and handles other tasks as well (basically you are looking at U-series CPU's which are a NO). That being said, there is a hidden gem at £599:

https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/asus-wvips-freesync-r5-3500h-8gb-1tb-15.6-inch-rx560-thin-bezel-laptop-fx505dy-bq008t/version.asp

This one is honestly the best one you can get if you want to replace your desktop at < £600. The CPU, AMD Ryzen 5 3550H is an absolute beast and it's backed up by 8GB DDR4 and an RX560X GPU. The GPU itself is more than capable of running FM in 3D very smoothly, so no concerns there either. Now, if this sounds too good to be true .... well, it has it's draawbacks:

- poor battery life. If you are using it at home mostly and you are not fussed about battery too much, then this isn't a big deal.

- a bit loud under heavy load.

- it doesn't come with an SSD by default and without one ... it will be laggy and sluggish when you are opening applications and even running through the operating system. The reason is the fact that laptops have low rpm hdd's (5400 rpm).

My advise is to get this one, since you can't really buy anything more suitable at this price (you can get something better that's not refurbished, but it's going to cost you >750) and add an SSD down the line. You only need a 128GB M.2 SSD which costs about £40-50 and it will take the laptop in a whole new dimension. If you preffer something really quiet, with more battery power and you're not fussed about performance, let me know.

You could do with a bit more RAM - which is cheap and easy to install.

But it should work ok.

Sorry, more questions! This is the one you recommended -

https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lenovo-legion-y530-156-inches-gaming-laptop-81fv00jjau

I found it on the Lenovo website if you scroll down for cheaper at $1500 but they are out of stock

https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/ideapad/lenovo-legion-y-series/Lenovo-Legion-Y530-15ICH/p/88GMY501020

If you go below there is a $1600 option and you can customise it. My two questions are -

  1. What customisations would make it the same as the original one you recommended?
  2. What would the best customisations be to make it a better laptop?

@Lukeyardley

This one at 1600$ is more powerful because it has a GTX 1050 Ti, but it comes with 8GB DDR4 instead of 16GB. This is not an issue whatsoever, in fact it's better to have the 1050 Ti which is about 25-30% better than the GTX 1050, so it will future proof the laptop even more. You can always add another 8GB DDR4 for a small fee (50-70$). Besides this difference, the laptops are identical. If you want to get it, don't change anything in the configuration, just order it as it is.

I would highly recommend, based on my experience with these laptops. They are well built, solid and reliable. The only thing you need to pay attention to is the screen. On some laptops they offer 2 different screen options: one that has low color accuracy and one that has high color accuracy. Do what you must, just make sure you get the better screen because it's truely great, while the bad one is really terrible. Other than that, I would recommend PC Specialist.

The problem is my U23's don't play any competitive matches. Is there any way to ask the board for example to register the U23s in an U23 league? I'm managing Dulwich Hamlet, now in the Championship, and still haven't had a chance to register the U23s in any competition, only the U18s are playing.  I can understand this is the case in the Vanarama south, but I would think a club in the Championship gets to have a team in an U23 league. Or are the U23 leagues fixed in the game and it's just never going to happen?

A related problem is that I can't even get my assistant manager to schedule friendlies for the U23s during the season (he does in pre-season), so the only way to get them playing is to manually arrange a friendly for the U23's every week, which is a bit annoying. I have selected the option "arrange friendly every week" (or something in that vein) in staff responsibilities, but it's not working.

Well, with a motherboard that has part of it broken, and a processor that old, you'd probably be looking at most of a new PC, as only the storage drives and graphics card would really be worth keeping for it (and you wouldn't be able to get a new PC plus a better graphics card under £600).

Also, do you know how to build a PC? Because if you wanted to use your graphics card, power supply and hard drives, you could buy a new motherboard, processor and RAM and build most of a new PC inside your current case. Otherwise we can see if we can find somewhere that would sell a PC without a graphics card that you can just slot your current one into?

My existing laptop just died and I’m looking to buy a new one soon. I’m USA based and would like to cap my spend at around $1,000 (and less would obviously be great). I’d really appreciate any suggestions.

HP has some great deals at the moment, but many of their processors are 8th Gen i7 with base speeds of 1.8 GHz (boostable to 4.0 GHz). From what I’ve read on here, that may not be sufficient for FM19. Example: https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-laptop-15t-value-5jr88av-1

Battery life and portability are important to me, as I’m often on very long overseas flights.  And, to be honest, FM19 is really my only reason to have a laptop! It’s my main game.  So as long as it works, I’m a happy man.

Thanks again for any advice!

For light weight you'd be looking at this

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-FX53VE-MS74-Gaming-Laptop-Computer/dp/B074Y8Q2Z8/ref=sr_1_2?fst=as%3Aoff&qid=1554131202&refinements=p_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A2289792011|2289793011%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A13580790011|7817224011%2Cp_n_feature_seven_browse-bin%3A18107821011%2Cp_n_size_browse-bin%3A2423840011|2423841011|3545275011%2Cp_n_feature_eleven_browse-bin%3A9521903011&rnid=9521902011&s=computers-intl-ship&sr=1-2

All of them are good for Football MAnager - just need to weigh up battery life over weight and also think of the price you are willing to pay.

Are you playing 2d or 3d and what kind of battery life are you expecting ?

3D but it’s not so important to me. I guess battery life is a little less important now. Delta has power at every seat on their planes. Thanks!

Hi Lads,

I'm looking at building a custom laptop on PC Specialist. Don't have much knowledge about computers but could someone build one on PC Specialist and post or DM me the details of the laptop.

This laptop will be only used for FM and small bit of browsing. I'd like something fast that will be able to run multiple leagues on large database and be able to play next versions of the game at a fast pace. My budget is 2500 Euros.

I had a look at the 17,3 Octane  IV with  i9  9900k 3.6ghz with 16GB of ram or would 32GB be better. Any help would be great thanks

16gb is plenty. But if the budget allows then why not 32gb.

What graphics card?

The processor has the fastest single thread performance which is great for FM.

Hi guys, looking for a new laptop to play fm19 and also watch movies, both from Netflix and my own blu ray rips

would prefer 3d matches

budget - £600-700

thanks

This is a very good option. You have a great CPU coupled with a nice GPU that can run FM in 3D really well. As a side bonus, in this laptop you will have Intel Optane technology which will increase boot times and HDD access times by a lot.
