Hi all,

Sorry to create a new post, and i'll try and provide as much detail as possible.

Trying to get back into Football Manager as it has been a while, (FM15 was my last game) I've always tried to play it on bog standard laptops that can't cope with it.

I have an external monitor at home I use for work when I WFH, so could either go with PC or laptop, would be happy with either, obviously laptop would be better for mobile gaming of it, if I went on holiday etc.

My budget would be around £5-600, could maybe push to 7, but would ideally not want to, Also, if I could get my requirement for cheaper, that would be great. Would be looking at making the purchase in the next month or so, would any major changes to quality happen in this time?

The PC/Laptop would be for playing football manager only, not really a PC gamer (apart from FM).

I like to run a fair few leagues;

England (From Prem - League 2)

Scotland (Prem)

Spain (La Liga)

Holland (Eredvisie)

Large database as well as I like to be able to do some proper scouting in my games.

I like the 3D engine, but its not necessary for me (I'm old school so have always seen the 3D engine as a novelty)

I like the game to run quick.

Would appreciate any help, as nearly all my laptop purchases to play FM in past have been a disaster and basically based on whatever is on offer at PC world or currys, and I don't want to splash another wedge on a laptop only for it to be rubbish.

For the price you won't do much better

https://www.box.co.uk/FX504GD-E41275T-ASUS-TUF-FX504GD-E41275T_2458989.html

This has slightly better graphics card but you're not interested in that - the major difference is a 1tb hard drive - so if storage is required for other things etc.

Same as the one above except a step up in the graphics card:

Same as second one but a slightly better processor:

Another one https://www.box.co.uk/30025006-Medion-Erazer-X6805_2431523.html

It's up to you - but the first one on the list would do you fine.

Thanks for the help Smurf, will the first one likely also run well on FM 2020 (I'm assuming the specs won't be too different to 2019?)

Just to say, thanks for all the advice Smurf. I've got a new laptop and without your advice about processors I'd probably have bought something that doesn't do the job, instead this one is running the FM19 demo smooth as you like.

No problem.

It's ridiculous the spec laptop you can get for that sort of budget these days.. that's an amazing lappy ..  8th gen i3 that boosts to 3.9ghz, 256gb ssd and 8gb ram for less than £400 .. mad

also, an update on my new laptop.. best laptop i've ever had, completely silent at all times, super fast, super powerful,.. would only suggest that anyone with an i7 8750H should 100% undervolt it to reduce throttling and reduce heat output.. it's reduced temps by 20c and i get an extra 40fps on most games.

That's the same processor I have in my new laptop. What does undervolt do and how do you do it. At the moment the laptop seems to be progressing the game well enough.

Depends on your laptops cooling solution, but he 8750H tends to run very hot, and as such, it tends to thermal throttle, which means it never quite reaches the clock speeds it can.. default is 4.1ghz ..

by undervolting it, you are providing the cpu with less power in order to find the sweet spot where it will happily boost up to top clock speed without thermal throttling... this means better performance, less heat and better life span on the cpu.. all in theory of course...

As mentioned, it depends on your laptops cooling solution whether it will benefit from it.. you can use various programs to undervolt it and also stress test your cpu to see if it would benefit it.. suggest researching it a lot before trying anything though because while the worst you cando with undervolting is underpowering your cpu and a few bsod's .. if you go the other way somehow and overvolt anything and essentially overclock your cpu, you can easily end up with a broken burnt out cpu and bricked laptop.

I'd personally go for this one, if you would also like to play games other than FM - https://www.box.co.uk/FX705GM-EW019T-ASUS-TUF-FX705GM-EW019T_2400047.html

Otherwise, if it's just FM, the cheaper one should run it just as well, given the difference is just a slightly weaker graphics card, but still more than enough for FM.

Hi Guys!

In terms of what im looking for - I dont use the 3d match engine, generally I look at having 2/3 nations loaded (8-10) leagues, classically ive alwas used a medium database but thats mainly due to the fact that ive always had fairly poor laptops as up until the last year or so I have had crappy jobs and thus a low budget! so I would love something thats capable of dealing with a large database. Finally and probably most importantly I use the data editor a lot and install as much graphics (kits, badges, skins etc) as I can, also try my hand to creating kits via photoshop.

So heres a few links to Laptops, just wanted some second opinions really on which would be the best to go after (all the links are Argos, theres probably cheaper retailers out there but I have an Argos card so this just works easier for me)

5 is probably the reach of my budget really so unless its significantly better than the previous 4 options I wouldn't really consider it

Many Thanks!

Good Morning

I need a new laptop. I purchased one a couple years ago on a limited budget but need something better now.

I generally play with around 2-5 nations active and have no desire for the 3d engine (I'm old school) and large player database. I'd like something which is faster processing as at the moment there can be a slight delay when clicking on links through the game. The Laptop will solely be for playing FM.

My budget is between £300-£500 and id prefer to be able to collect from a store than order on-line. However if ordering on-line proves to provide a laptop that is better value and performance then that is ok.

Is this one any good?

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-15-3000-15-6-intel-core-i3-laptop-256-gb-ssd-silver-10189730-pdt.html

Ive read through some previous posts and this one seems to be recommended a bit - is this best option for me?

https://www.box.co.uk/NX.EFREK.014-Acer-Extensa-15_2612001.html

For an extra £50, is it better to get this one which may last me a few versions of future FM's?

https://www.box.co.uk/NX.EFHEK.014-Acer-Extensa-15-2540_2312768.html

Any help and advice would be very appreciated.

Looks good !

sorry to be a pain @Smurf but i just want to be sure that i am making the right decision. In terms of performance i appreciate that the Asus is better than that Acer with the i5. Is it worth to spend that extra and get the Asus or will the Acer with the i5 be more than enough for me?

The i5-7200U is 279th in the list of processor benchmarks, whilst the i3-8145U (the cheaper Acer) is ranked higher. The Asus is 73rd so better but just want to know if there is that much difference for an extra £130 between the Asus and the Acer with the i5.

That's tongue twister!

The latest you posted is the best of the list. Go for the better one if you can afford it.

what would be the best laptop I can get for a budget of around £800? Something that will run the game smoothly?

If you're into other games

If you're not then consider this refurb.

Medion where taken over by Lenovo - and Lenovo are a good make.

I never used to recommend Medions but lately they get good reviews.

MSI are an excellent make too.

It's completely up to you which one you go for.

HPs in that price bracket tend to have flimsy screens/cheapish bodies/keyboards etc.

Take the main specs here it is either going to be an i5 8300H or an i7 8750H processor - either is fine and similar performance for FM.

Take 8gb RAM or more if you can get it.

GTX 950 graphics card is pretty good, then the 1050, then 1060 and so on.

Stick to that and whatever brand you want.

Hi all

After a bit of laptop related advice if you don’t mind

Due to a variety of issues I am being compensated with a new laptop - screen 240hz, 9750h gtx 2070, 512GB SSD. Completely overkill for my needs so am considering selling it, would any buyer have any issues if I did if they had to have something fixed under warranty? Would appreciate your input... Many thanks

It'll come down to the individual warranty agreement with the store giving you the laptop. A lot of those warranties aren't transferable though, and if that's the case they wouldn't be able to get it fixed on warranty.

Hi ive a friend selling a laptop the same as in the link below.

HP Pavilion 14-bk154sa (3DL70EA#ABU) - 14" Laptop Intel Core i5-8250U 1.6 GHz / 3.4 GHz Turbo Quad Core Processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, HD Display, HDMI, USB 3.1., Windows 10 Home 64-bit https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BVJ82J2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WjvEDbWSP5AE5

I only would like to play with 6 or 7 leagues with a small database, i only play matches in 2d also so graphics wouldnt matter too much.

Would this laptop be suitable or can anyone recommemd a laptop to me for a budget of £250 to £300. I know its low but id be willing to buy refurbished.

Hi to all,

I'd like to ask an advice because I have to buy some parts for my desktop PC.

I don't want to spend too much, ideally below 300€, for buying CPU, MB, RAM and SSD. I will play FM only in 2D mode and with maximum 4/5 different leagues loaded.

I was looking at a configuration with:

- AMD Ryzen 3 2200G

- 16 GB RAM Corsair Vengeance 3000 MHz DDR4 (I will also use Photoshop for entertainment)

- MB (reallly I don't know but I suppose it won't be so important)

- SSD 250 Gb

The question is: will it be enough in terms of CPU and graphic cards for running FM only in 2D mode?

Thank you

Hi guys,

I've missed out on the hotukdeal hp laptop above, would have ordered it if I had seen it early enough!

I’ll be playing in fm20 in 2d with 4-6 leagues medium database. I don’t play any other games and won’t use the laptop for anything else.

Whats your thoughts on this laptop? Or is there an alternative cheaper than this?

I don't think it would be suitable, but if your budget is 250 to 300 then probably best you can do.

This is probably best you could do - and I'd recommend this over the other one https://www.box.co.uk/(Refurbished)-Acer-Aspire-5-A517-51-33YD_2417968.html

Thanks smurf! I’ve just come across this with a better processor for £50 more.. good deal?

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1690000

This one won't boot up or load games as quickly initially, because whilst it has much more storage space, it's a standard hard drive, as opposed to the solid state drive in the cheaper one (but that one has barely any storage space on it), but processing will likely be a bit faster, though whether you'd notice the difference, I'm not sure (it's only 0.1GHz difference in processing speed for both the base speed and the boosted speed). I'd probably go for the Argos one anyway though, as you'll be able to save a lot more on the hard drive, even if it does boot slightly slower.

It has 16GB RAM rather than just the 8GB in the one you linked, and FM isn't going to look any different on a 120Hz screen compared to a 60Hz screen.

Ssd has little or no effect for FM performance.

Youre better off putting money into the processor and graphics card.

This is for everyones benefit:

You cannot change the processor or the graphics card in most laptops.

What you can change is the RAM and the hard drive. Both easily done they are plug and play. Mosy laptops just have a piece you unscrew under the laptop.

If you are not bothered about 3d put your money into the processor.

8gb Ram is min.

Ok so I apologise if I’m on the wrong thread before hand. So I’m about to purchase a laptop after a few years of playing football manager touch, however as a student I’m on a budget so I can’t exactly splash out on a expensive laptop. Most of the laptops around my budget range have 4gb ram is this good enough to run football manager or no? I also have no idea about specs and so on with laptops so thanks for all you guys help in advance.

4gb won't be enough - please let us know your budget and we can take a look and see if there's anything we can find online.

I’m not bothered about 3d.. I looked at 3 laptops, all three have 8gb ram and GTX1050 graphics one of those had i5-8300h processor and the other two have the i5-9300h processor. I chose the one with i5-9300h processor and ssd for faster loading times
