Sorry to piggyback, but you guys have been brilliant in this thread so far and I was hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction.

I'm looking to update my creaking old Dell laptop of six years as it was struggling enormously with FM2012, with only five leagues running. I wanted to get something with a decent bit of power for not only FM but various other media and work tasks. Looks good. The graphics card is a bit weak, if you intend on playing other games then this card probably won't cut it.

But it's fine for FM.

And if you're only planning on playing FM on this computer - it's a bit overkill but it would be great at having lots of leagues running.

it's a fantastic machine ally... and will last you many years....

its at the top of the food chain as it were..

you'll be getting a top top cpu, faster ram than the norm, a dedicated graphics card and 1tb of hdd which is fantastic..

and tbh, the price isnt overpriced too much considering all of that...

the question you'd have to ask yourself is, if you need faster ram than the norm and a very top processor etc...

because if you dont intend on needing every tiny bit of power you can afford, you could easily come down £150 and get something you won't notice much difference at all with if you are just wanting to play fm, bit of movie/sound editing etc

Thanks guys. That's a great help. The fact that it'll last me years is the most important thing for me. I use my laptops until they literally fall apart, usually 7/8 years. The current one, an old Inspiron, has got one broken hinge, the left mouse button doesn't work and struggles to keep up with even a web browser and Word being open at the same time! So I need something that won't slow down too much despite what future tech (and me) will throw at it over the coming years.

but frankly... you're wasting money for no reason if your primary concern is fm and the like

That's a decent deal.. seen better over the last few months for cheaper, you just have to look around and wait for deals.

I'd never recommend spending over £350-400 on a laptop, it's a waste unless you're travelling a lot... spend the same amount on a PC and you will get a beast which will enable you to play any of the latest games.

But the one i posted was the best I could find that wasn't a discounted deal .. and as i've said before as well, if anyone can find better and post it, it's all to the benefit of everyone..

The good ones are normally on deal for 3-4 days every few weeks, just have to wait.. visit hotukdeals.com every day and one will pop up.

I will never buy a desktop again. The fact is you have to have a dedicated desk which takes up room and is impractical, for me.

I love laptops for that reason, when you're finished you just them away until you're ready to play.

I understand desktops can be bought for cheaper and a better spec - but I just can't ever use a desktop again. Takes up too much space.

In saying there are other laptops for better deals elsewhere - well that's a given - so post the links and we can all enjoy those benefits too.

What was posted here 2 months ago may not be a top of the range machine now. So it's always worth asking again and again which one is a good deal.

We all have different sources and resources for these things - so post them :)

Yes, my search continues :rolleyes: Anyway, I have finally whittled down my options to 5 lol, 2 Desktops & 3 Laptops. This really will be my final choice and I'm not looking at anything else I promise! :D

So you can help me choose, I'll say that I mostly use my current PC only for internet browsing, itunes, torrent sites and of course the only PC game I play and am passionate about - FM. All my other gaming interests are taken care of by my PS3. Now my current PC (Intel Q6600 Quad, 2.4Ghz 3.2GB RAM useable (windows xp 32 bit)) has lasted me around 4.5 years and only now is it slowing down in general use and FM wise.

Obviously nothing is future proof but I would like to see the Desktop/Laptop I eventually buy, last this long (excluding faults, just performance wise I'm talking about here). Would I get this from all 5 of these? I know you can upgrade desktops easier in the future but with laptops you are kinda stuck with what you got for the most part so I'd just like to make sure these systems would all last. The thing I dislike about desktops though as Eugene said, portability is restricted, even in a house setting it's good to know you can go anywhere with a laptop really.

There is another model above this in spec slightly which has a 650M and I7 3630QM for £722 (separate purchase of W7).

Look, I know that both of the desktops are more powerful than the laptops but tbh as I said before, if these all would last me a good 4 years or so, provide at least 25+ leagues worth and 100k+ worth of players on FM then I would go with one of the laptops tbh. I seem to be obsessed about getting an SSD for some reason even though I know it's not a necessity. So which is it to be? Desktop or Laptop and which model? :D

Advice would be appreciated (e.g your top 2?) as I'll definitely be buying one of these systems by this upcoming Tuesday at the latest.

Very good processor better than the one above. If you want to play other games on this laptop then I'd change the graphics card to a GT 650 instead of the 630.

Again if you want to play other games then the GT 650 would be better.

It's a good computer - on par with the desktops imo.

I'd go for the other model with the 650m - this is a monster of a computer! I'd be tempted.

I saw a German site that said it ran a bit hot, which was the only thing that concerns me. One benefit is that there is a spare HDD bay so you can add an SSD or another HDD at some stage.

For the price it seems a very good deal.

I've seen a few Medions and they just look cheap and clunky. I don't what it is about them - random parts strewn together imo.

On most desktops there's usually a spare bay. But always check.

It's a good deal alright. I'd be wary about them though. Although it's been a few years since I've seen one.

@ Eugene - Thanks for the advice mate but what do you reckon would suit my needs most out of the 5? Regarding the Novatech's, didn't you think the build quality looked a bit poor and tacky? That was all I was worried about plus it being their own brand. Yeah, that one in your link was the upgraded one I mentioned.

Remember though, I don't play any other game on the PC but FM. I'm just looking for a good performance over 4 years with a 25+ league setup and a 100k+ player database.

In regards to the 25+ league and 100k players I couldn't tell you what FM13 possibly requires for this.

That Novatech one I pointed to is pretty good specs - and someone else on the forums (can't remember who) backed the Novatech build.

That Novatech or the Dell one posted above are superb.

@ Eugene - Ok no problem. Either Novatech is great but it looks ugly don't you think? Pity the Dell comes with W8 & not W7 :(

I'm obsessed with getting an SSD and that is the only stumbling block for me with most of the laptops. That's why I'm leaning towards the desktops. I'm just thinking, are the desktops worth over £100 over the laptops? (with monitor, desktop 1 is £780 and desktop 2 is £775 with monitor & £25 delivery). I don't want to be overspending just for FM here.

I think the novatech looks fine. The back is a bit ugly but you can buy vinyl skins to cover it if you don't like it that much.

Regards the Dell -- surely you can get windows 7 and install it on the computer.

If it's just for FM don't get hung up on SSDs, you'll have faster boot time, faster load and save times. But it does nothing to speed up the actual game play. All that is in the processor.

The Dell - Yeah I suppose but the cheapest I can find Windows 7 for is 72.99 so I wouldn't want to do that. Welshace said that Windows 8 is poor and targeted at tablets.

Yeah I know SSD's wouldn't affect FM but I mean for general use like booting up Windows and Firefox, Itunes etc. I'm not so bothered about file transfer speeds though really but I like the sound of instant response times. I'm probably being a bit picky though.

From what I've heard Windows 8 isn't that much of a leap from Windows 7 for desktop users, rather than "poor". If you're using a touchscreen its miles ahead. I'm not particulary worried here.

Ok so I've done some thinking and have ruled out 'Desktop 1'. Also, I won't be going for the upgraded Novatech due to it being £722 with W7 when I could just get 'Desktop 2' for £52 more. I'm still considering the £622 Novatech ('Laptop 2') though. Oh, and due to the Dell deal, I can also rule out the Toshiba ('Laptop 3') as the Dell is better @ the same price. Dell will take the Toshiba's place as 'Laptop 3'.

Nothing to do with hard drive space - it's a better processor - that's what the game needs to run on - a good processor.

160 gb is loads for FM.
