First two @GM1903 are identical apart from double the SSD space, which isn't worth the extra 130 odd notes imo..

The Asus however is fairly similar, with the same core components, but it has a bigger screen.. which might well be worth it if you consider that important.

SSHD is a solid state hybrid drive, which combines the best of both worlds of ssd and traditional HD's ..but they also compromise on both, It will come down to what you want really... large storage space  (HD), fast speeds (SSD) or somewhere inbetween (SSHD) ..

SSHD's are efficient as hell these days and I love them.

For an extra 200 quid or so, I like the ASUS, but that's only because I find gaming/working on a 15'6 screen difficult and I happen to like Asus rog's .

As always , I'll end this by asking if there is any reason why you need to buy from scan as they are slightly overpriced when it comes to their laptops etc.

The 3XS is what I have gone for fella. Namely because of the balance between components. The screen while only 60Hz, is a IPS and also comes with the G-Sync chip. If I wanted to play faster online games, can turn that off at the risk of tearing.

Do agree with the SSHD. Did consider that myself, but decided on the normal mechanical disc for storage. I already have a external SATA at 2GB so wasn’t a real issue, although Scan pretty much go up a tenner between 1GB and 2. The SSD that comes as standard is a pretty good drive, but tbh most of the custom builders will charge pretty much the same for the extra 250GB or so. But do agree though, I would personally put that extra towards more DRAM or the 1070 which is around an extra 220 over the 1060.

Overall though as I can’t build it myself, I would have gone for the MSI or the ROG if I had decided that retail route, and yes probably would have got extra DRAM for the same price, or cheaper. I simply went with Scan due to all the reviews in Custom PC over the years, and the component speccing Of PC Specialist was unbalanced. Especially when looking at the different options of CPU. Good advice thought 👍

The only thing I would add is that the screens are spot on with these machines. Most other models come with unspecified TN panels with FHD that offer 120 - 144Hz range. However with an IPS screen, you will get better viewing angles and balanced light and colours without having to sit in front of the machine and adjust the screen to suit how you are sitting. 60Hz is more than good enough for FM 👍

The ASUS is a cracking machine and has millisecond response of 3 which is very good for a laptop. The best being around 2 and 5 is pretty much the ceiling for elite gaming. For FM though not an issue, but just something to keep in mind if you play Overwatch or something like that online. The problem is though, these machines are currently on pre order from ASUS. Scan is not the only retailer in this sense to have this issue. Maybe easier to order direct from ASUS if you decide to settle on one of theirs.

I don't know about any of them to be honest, I'd still go with a 7700HQ - as it's a faster base speed for FM would be better no?

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/173-3xs-lg17-vengeance-g-sync-6gb-gtx-1060-fhd-screen-intel-core-i7-7700hq-16gb-ddr4-250gb-m2-ssd-1t

How about this one instead?

Just curious to what you all think too.

Saves a couple of hundred. I would probably have plumped for that one and increased the DRAM to two sticks of 16GB, plus probably upgraded to a 1070. Or aleast one or the other. Aside from the fact I specifically wanted the 8750H, I would have ideally wanted the i9. However, due to space and time, I have had to get a lappy. But yes though, I too would have happily gone for the 7700HQ for the higher base clock which would indeed future proof from that angle, but wouldn’t necessarily be faster performance wise internally in the future. Not so much about raw speed and clock cycles allied against performance.

I doubt though that SI will increase minimum specs for a while, they will lose a bunch of sales for one. The current state would be more optimisation and taking more adavantage of threading. Just a guess on my part though, as most games minimum specs don’t greatly differ.

Nice machines. Should have no issues with that. If they install the windows partition on the SSD, just keep an eye on the window updates and stuff. 128 GB will be minus up to 40 GB potentially.

it came today, cant believe the difference in speed and general performance, wish id upgraded earlier haha. but im pretty old school like that, if something works why replace it, know what i mean?

Yep. Old school too. Research and more research, codenames, amount of fabrication runs etc. Many CPU’s for example can be different models but the same. Some of the 7300’s can actually be 7700’s but just rated slightly different due to some flaws. Exactly why Intel adopt the same train of thought “If something works why replace it” Computing all over fella, just depends on the way you look at it. Sorry having a geeky moment 😂

Anyway glad you are happy with the new machine. You may need to do a bit of tweaking driver wise. Some of the drivers may well be what’s known as reference. IE what works out of the box, but there probably will be more up to date ones out there. Always worth creating a system restore point in Windows before proceeding though. Any issues you can always post back. Looking forward to getting my new one next week 😊

Been trying to follow advice on here but I'm not tech savy so find it difficult to follow. Looking to purchase a new laptop - which I'll use for work, general browsing and FM. FM is the only game I'd play. Budget in and around £800. Found the below. This work OK? Conscious the processor may not be in the required spec- - Intel Core i7-8550U Processor, Quad-core , 1.8 GHz.

Any advice would be great - thanks!

Wouldn't advise that one

This would be better - it's 17 inch

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-1799E5-1225-MSI-GL72M-7REX-1225UK_2206597.html

However, if you want a 15 inch

To be honest - there's plenty of good choices in the £850 range - that's just two I picked.

Looking to get a new laptop to play FM2018, not had a new laptop within the past 5-6 years so I am out of the loop - i played a little of FM2017 on my current laptop but having only the top leagues from 4 countries put me on half a star and it was taking me too long to do anything.

I have been looking at this one

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NH.Q2REK.002-Acer-Nitro-5-AN515-51-71SG_2156511.html

wondering if this would be faster?

Thanks in advance

It's pretty good

THis has similar specs - much cheaper

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J962-1693-MSI-GL62M-7RDX-1693UK_2166663.html

The acer has a longer battery when not plugged in - however, it's hardly a concern if plugged in while playing.

Do you think that would be enough to run the game smoothly without cooking my laptop?

my older laptop used to get very hot (to the point it shut down one time)

If your laptop is getting hot it's probably because the vents are blocked with dust. You can clear the dust by buying a can of compressed air and blowing it into the vents.

You should also invest in a laptop cooler (they are about 20 quid)  - this does 2 things, rests the laptop on it and the fans underneath blow cool air to keep the temp down - and it also keeps the laptop elevated so dust from carpets, rugs, beds, floor, tables etc doesn't get sucked into the vents.

In saying that - either of the laptops there would be more than capable. Just one is a lot cheaper (similar specs).

If you can afford the more expensive one then go for it.

Yes, that is essentially what is known as thermal shutdown. The CPU operating above designed heat limits. Yes it is correct that dust can be a big issue in a poorly vented system, with which laptops have many constraints with space available.

However, there are other issues that can cause CPU’s to in essence protect themselves, like we do from the sun for example. When you get your next lappy, it is well worth getting in to the habit of watching things like the temperature of the CPU, watching things like the performance of the hard drives/SSD’s to see if things feel a little off over the lifespan of the computer.   Like that game took ages to boot up or something like that.

Just a bit of preventative maintenance, even if it is just keeping an eye on things, can save you time and money in the long term. Plus like using sun cream, it is good practice 😊 All the best with it and hope you get what you want 👍

@Transk53 @Smurf Well the laptop i went to get has now sold out, would dropping from and i7 quad core to an i5 quad core affect running the game too much?

Well how about hte other one at the cheaper price https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16J962-1693-MSI-GL62M-7RDX-1693UK_2166663.html

It's practically the same - the only noteable difference is how long the battery lasts when not plugged in.

For that money you wouldn't see me dropping to an i5.

Ill have a look, this laptop is only for playing FM so would an i7 be a requirement?

last question i promise

Link to post

It wouldn't be a requirement, but you want to get the best you can within your budget.

By getting the best you can you can futureproof your purchase.

For instance, the i5 and i7 are more than capable of playing FM.

But what bout 5 years in the future, would an i5 be ok to play FM? Would an i7?

Who knows - but if you have a budget in mind, you are better off getting the best and most up to date hardware as possible.

Yes as Smurf says both are sufficient. In the desktop world you get more bang per buck from an i5, but the i7 tends to be more expensive. With gaming a lot of the higher end i5's have always been good enough. In laptops though future proofing is a lot more tricky due to the fact that generally speaking the upgrade path is a lot different. CPU's in desktops of the same socket can be upgraded generally, so you can factor that in for example. In this case as Smurf recommends, the i7 models are really the minimum to be as future proofed as possible. Of course, more money has to be spent in general on a laptop so please keep that in mind.

Hey guys many thanks for your feedback and sorry I didn't reply back sooner

@Welshace Yeah I like the Rog machines but my only issue with them is they they all seem to be 5400 rpm want something with 7200rpm I'm looking for a 17" and no I don't need to buy from Scan i was on saveon laptops and the prices were pretty similar.

@Transk53 How are you getting on with your 3XS? Yes i agree about the IPS as i have seen MSI laptops first hand I like the look of them but i dont like the TN panel and have read so many bad reviews saying theirs died on them like after 2 years and the HDD and SSD installed is mediocre and slow.

@Smurf I have no idea abt higher base clock speed I have been patience in getting a new laptop so want it to be future proofed just  noticed this on scan and I'm just asking would u still go for the 7700HQ over this one? https://www.scan.co.uk/products/173-3xs-lg17-vengeance-6gb-gtx-1060-144hz-fhd-screen-intel-core-i7-8750h-16gb-ddr4-250gb-m2-ssd-1tb

Haven’t got it yet. They have been waiting for a supply of new chassis. No doubt because of the G-Sync chip being needed to be built in to the screen, not just about the graphics card. Hopefully it will be with me this weekend 😊

Personally I would still go for the Coffee Lake. It is unlikely that SI will ramp up the minimum clock speed anytime soon. Plus it is not just about raw speed these days as CPU efficiency is just better and better. Yeah I think the 3XS will do you fine, plus built to order is something I personally favour over the mass produced and a badge stuck on it. Okay so some of the components are not heavy weight like some PC Specialist can spec you, but Scan have been around for a good while and where on of the first retailers to offer liquid cooled systems among other things. They have pedigree. MSI and Asus are very good, but can build their machines a little cheaper because they have their products to use, but are still mass produced as items. Yes I get a bit geeky about these type of things 🤓

Forgot to mention that had it not been for all the problems with TSB, I would have had it by now. Took me a week to get the money transferred to Scan, by which time they had ran out of laptop chassis.

It's crazy good - I hit the wrong thing in the selection of the secondary SSD - I'd actually go for something with more space too.

Of course though - if your budget is in the 1-1.5k range or higher - you can get ridiculous rigs.

It is indeed Smurf. I am wary of the overclocked 1060. I hope the chassis is made with sufficient cooling for that. But yes that CPU is a nice chip.

Yes absolutely. Very good midrange I guess the 1060 can be counted as. For 4K and higer resolutions really need a 1070 minimum. And just to complicate a lot more for a lot of people, nVidia are releasing the 1180 Founders Edition in July for around 400 quid. Apparently with 16GB of GDDR6 memory. Laptop versions by the end of the year just to muddy the waters with 1050 to 1080 still available. nVidia do like to offer confusion 😂

Hi guys, I'm looking to get into FM for the first time and I am looking to buy a laptop that can run FM18 well. I don't know all that much about computers though, so I was looking for some help. My budget is right around $1,000 USD, but there is a little bit of flexibility there. Here are the specs on the laptop I am currently looking at buying:

7th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ mobile processor
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphics
2.8 GHz processor speed
8 GB RAM

Any thoughts? I would really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hi guys, I'm looking to get into FM for the first time and I am looking to buy a laptop that can run FM18 well. I don't know all that much about computers though, so I was looking for some help. My budget is right around $1,000 USD, but there is a little bit of flexibility there. Here are the specs on the laptop I am currently looking at buying:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-omen-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-1tb-hard-drive-hp-sandblasted-hairline-brushing-and-carbon-fiber/6123301.p?skuId=6123301

7th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ mobile processor
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphics
2.8 GHz processor speed
8 GB RAM

Any thoughts? I would really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Yeh it looks good enough

The i5 8300H is actually quicker in gaming than the i7 7700HQ, but not by a lot. So yes it would be worth spending less money on the i7. If it had been higher up the family of the new 8xxx series of processors then no only get the 7700HQ if you want a bargain. In fact the 7800 Kaby Lakes are quicker still if you can find one in a laptop. The likes of HP have used them in the Omen machines which are also highly recommended by the technical press.

For other games id plump for the i5 but for fm id be inclined towards the i7 7700hq.

I think the more ram also wins it.

Definitely 👍 for FM it would be fine. If I didn’t need what I went for, I would have gone for the i7 7700 or the 78xx. Eventually I think this will be the i5 that will ship in most decent laptops.

to muddy things even further, and while no official announcement as yet, but Cannon Lake and Ice Lake due the end of this year. 8 core CPUs mainstream.

There's no need to muddy things really - just the best option in hardware for FM. And for FM the i7 7700HQ is one of the best.

Although - the next gen are on the way.

Yeah no you misunderstand again. It was just a turn of speech. I was alluding to the choice for FM gamers, and other gamers alike for the future. Hence that is part of finding the best solution for FM gamers.

You must have a budget in mind?

Cheapest I have found suitable for FM is approx £570 GBP

Most expensive to play FM at a decent rate is approx £900 GBP

And if you want to get really intense you could pay anywhere between £900 and £20,000
