Leyton Orient (5) Everton (1)

Orient- D.Fredheim Holm 18,43 J.Donnelly 32,34 D.Poole 68

Everton- C.Beckers 62

MOM- David Poole, Leyton Orient

Orient used a strong effort and some stern discipline from the referee to see off visiting Everton by a 5-1 score as the eagerly awaited pairing of David Poole and Jamie Donnelly occurred. Lee Sims keyed the first goal with a good pass to Daniel Fredheim Holm down the right side. Fredheim Holm did the rest as he easily moved past Yakubu on the dribble and then fired a rising shot over Richard Wright's shoulder to give Orient the lead. A scuffle after Yakubu had to leave the match following a hard tackle by Carl Laurie resulted in a yellow card for Fredy William Thompson and a red card for Phil Black as he landed a left hook on David Poole. Stephen Pearson made a superb pass from midfield to find Poole with space at the edge of the area. Poole flicked the ball to Donnelly and he rifled it past Wright into the left side of the net for his 15th goal of the season. Carl Laurie's excellent through ball allowed Donnelly to repeat his scoring demonstration against Wright less than three minutes later- again into the left side of the net for his 2nd goal of the match. The frustration was clearly taking hold of the visitors was Thompson pushed down Matthew Etherington following Donnelly's 2nd goal and earned his 2nd yellow card and an early trip to the showers. Jan Evrard made a nice pass to Fredheim Holm roaming down the right sideline and Fredheim Holm proved how dangerous he was by taking the ball past Stuart Howe and Richard Naylor before making a final move and ripping a shot over a diving Wright for his 2nd goal of the match and 5th of the season to give Orient a 4-0 halftime lead. Everton scored their lone goal when Orient misplayed a corner and James McFadden laid the ball back for Christian Beckers to blast past James Hicks from just beyond the edge of the area. Poole finally got the goal he deserved in the match when Sims again sent a picture perfect through ball to him through a crowd and Poole just had to slightly deflect it for it to sail past Wright to close out the 5-1 win.

***

"I was worried that Jamie Donnelly and David Poole might not work well together- especially as we were moving Jamie to the left side, not the right side he had been playing all season," sighed Drabek.

"No worries there- at least if today is any indication. They played very well together- actually maybe they might work together better than Moore and Poole did, but I guess time will tell us on that," replied Field.

WBA (2) Leyton Orient (3)

WBA- T.Ghioane 23 J.Koumas 90

Orient- D.Poole 21 O.Oskarsson 29 J.Donnelly 44

MOM- Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Leyton Orient

It was a battle for Orient, as they played another close match with a club that always is difficult for them in WBA, but they came out on top 3-2 at The Hawthorns. Orient took the lead when a weak goal kick from Russell Haworth went to Stephen Pearson. Pearson had the presence of mind to pick out David Poole between two defenders and made a perfect flick to him. Poole volleyed the shot past Howarth and Orient was ahead. WBA struck back to equalize almost immediately when Jason Koumas saw Tiberiu Ghioane left unmarked in the middle and sent the ball to him. Ghioane made a terrific curling shot that Sebastien Frey got a piece of- but went through him into the net. Orient moved back in front when a crisp passing sequence from Michele Marchese to Poole to Orri Freyr Oskarsson allowed Oskarsson to fire in a shot to the right side of the net. Jan Evrard made WBA pay for another less than perfect goal kick as his header forward found Jamie Donnelly in full stride. Junior tried to cut Donnelly, but wasn't able to before Donnelly's quick move past Howarth and then an easy chip into the net to give Orient a 3-1 halftime lead. WBA pressed in the second half, but the Orient backline and Frey were playing well and kept the two goal lead into injury time. WBA finally drew a goal back when WBA worked an excellent play. Neil Clement's throw in was centered by Lewis Guy. Peter Crouch rose in a crowd of Orient defenders and flicked the ball back to Jason Koumas and Koumas made a brilliant half-volley to send it past a slow reacting Frey. WBA fell short in their fightback as Ghioane hit the post with a header in the last moments of extra time and Orient hung on for the close 3-2 win.

Leyton Orient (2) Tottenham (0)

Orient- J.Donnelly 3,32

Tottenham- None

MOM- Jamie Donnelly, Leyton Orient

In a match moved to Sunday afternoon so it could be televised, it was Orient winning the showdown match between the two clubs tied atop the EPL. Orient's offense was dynamic in the first half and Tottenham was having difficulty staying with the sharp passing shown by Orient. Lee Sims is proving he is a dangerous long passer and he proved it again as he threaded a ball past Ledley King and Robin Faber to find Jamie Donnelly camped in front of Tim Howard. Howard had no chance as Donnelly quickly rocketed a shot past into the right side of the net. Howard kept Tottenham in the match with a series of dazzling saves in the next 10 minutes of play. He stopped Orri Freyr Oskarsson twice in one-on-one situations, stopped Donnelly's hard angled shot and pushed a blast from David Poole over the bar. Jan Evrard's pass to Donnelly after a corner was slightly deflected by Stilian Petrov. Donnelly was first to the loose ball and showed beautiful touch with a shot that squeezed inside the far right post as Jonathan Guerrero desperately tried to clear it off the line for Donnelly's 2nd goal of the match. Orient came close to putting the match out of reach in the opening moments of the second half as Poole went in free on Howard and uncharacteristically waited a moment too long as Howard got his hand to push the ball past the post. Howard also stopped Donnelly again as he smothered the good chance at his hat-trick. Tottenham showed more offensive life in the second half, but Sebastien Frey and the Orient backline did a good job of blunting their attacks and scooping up any errant attempts. The 2-0 Orient win moves them 3 points ahead of 2nd place Tottenham.

***

"Another strong performance- the boys are really playing well," observed Field.

Drabek chuckled ruefully, "To think I worried about pairing Poole and Donnelly. I believe you are correct Spencer, they may well make a more dangerous combo that Moore and Poole did last season. The only reservation I have is that Jamie is not as easy giving up the ball as Stefan was- David could have had a couple good chances if he had just sent a pass to him sooner."

"Maybe that will come with time- after all they haven't played together that many matches yet."

Millwall (1) Leyton Orient (2)

Millwall- S.Johnson 22

Orient- J.Turner 29 D.Fox 45

MOM- David Fox, Leyton Orient

5th place Millwall and EPL leader Orient staged an entertaining match at The New Den, but it was Orient ahead 2-1 at the final whistle as they managed to fight back for another road win. Millwall sent their fans into a frenzy when Simon Johnson made a scorching run past Jan Evrard and then faked Sebastien Frey enough to slip the ball under him for a Millwall lead. Orient answered when Matthew Etherington made a good volley on a long pass from Ryan Garry. Etherington's volley found David Poole with enough space to blast away, but Nicky Weaver parried away the low shot. John Turner, who was a suprise choice in place of Jamie Donnelly, had an easy time picking up the rebound and whisking it into the open left side of the net for his 5th goal of the season to even the match at 1-1. Orient took the halftime lead with a goal in first half injury time. A long pass from Lee Sims caused havoc for Millwall when Poole headed it down for David Fox and he made a quick move past two flat footed defenders before smashing a shot that Weaver got his hand on, but still bounced into the net. The second half saw the two sides battle bitterly for each possession and scoring chance. Both Frey and Weaver were very sharp in the second half and the halftime score of 2-1 also became the final tally as Orient won another important road match to stay in front of Tottenham.

Leyton Orient (3) Celta (0) Champions Cup Group B

Orient- M.Marchese 5-P,28-P J.Donnelly 90

Celta- None

MOM- Michele Marchese, Leyton Orient

Because Orient had already clinched a place in the 2nd phase of Champions Cup competition, it was mostly their 2nd unit that played as they hosted Celta at Brisbane Road. Orient did just fine with those players as they cemented a likely top placement in Group D with a 3-0 win. In a scramble for the ball at the edge of the six-yard box, David Albelda grabbed and held Jamie Donnelly. Michele Marchese drove the penalty kick into the right side of the net and Orient was off to a flying start. It was a very similar situation midway through the first half when Mikael Nilsson earned a yellow card and another penalty kick for holding Donnelly to keep him from zooming to a loose ball. Marchese calmly scored his 2nd penalty kick to push Orient ahead 2-0. Orient capped off the win when Marchese deftly slipped a pass through to Donnelly. Donnelly raced past his defender and then with time drove a low shot past Pablo Oscar Cavallero for his 20th goal of the season and a 3-0 Orient win. Dinamo Kiev traveled to Sofia and drew 0-0 against Levski Sofia to also clinch a spot in the 2nd round- which makes the final Group matches pairing Orient at Dinamo Kiev and Levki Sofia at Celta meaningless. The bad news for Orient was losing Jamie Donnelly for the next couple weeks due a groin strain.

MOM- Paul Robinson, Leeds

It was no surprise that Paul Robinson received MOM honours- after all the Brisbane Road faithful had given him a nice ovation at the end of the match, all the while grumbling about the scoreless draw. Orient outshot Leeds 21-1 for the match, but many of the shots were by Stephen Pearson and Daniel Fredheim Holm from a ways out. Still, Robinson salvaged the split of points for Leeds when he made an excellent one-on-one save against David Fox early in the second half. He also stopped young Danny Thompson twice from close in. The draw leaves Orient only a point ahead of 2nd place Tottenham at the 17 match mark point of the season.

Leyton Orient (3) Arsenal (0) League Cup 4th round

Orient- M.Harding 9 D.Vanni 25 O.Oskarsson 45

Arsenal- None

MOM-

Orient took full advantage when Arsenal defender Jens Forster earned his 2nd yellow card at the 8 minute mark. They attacked the 10-man Arsenal side relentlessly in the first half and scored a 3-0 win to move on to the Quarterfinals. Orient struck directly after Forster's 2nd yellow card, as Michele Marchese turned the free kick into a nicely timed passing play that saw Mark Harding move in to slot the ball inside the left post on the far side of the play. Orri Freyr Oskarsson challenged Diego Placente when he sent a hard pass through to Davide Vanni. Placente couldn't flag down the sizzling pass and Vanni was beyond him as he moved around a diving Chris Kirkland to fire the ball inside the right post. Matthias Franz's long pass was run down by Vanni in the right corner and he made a curving cross that Oskarsson reached first and forced past the grasp of Kirkland to put Orient ahead 3-0 at halftime. With the lead, Orient was content to defend in the second half, but they almost paid a price in the opening moments as Adriano was sent in alone. James Hicks, who Orient plucked from Arsenal last season, made a terrific save on Adriano as he pushed his shot over the bar to help earn the clean sheet as Orient finished out the 3-0 win.

Leyton Orient (6) Sao Paulo (2) Intercontinental Cup- Yokohoma, Japan

Orient- D.Poole 5,11 Rogerio Ceni 25-OG,32-OG M.Baros 45 D.Arrieta 72

Sao Paulo- A.Fernando Teixeira da Silva 16,78

MOM- David Poole, Leyton Orient

A horrible match by Sao Paulo keeper Rogerio Ceni contributed to a worthy Orient effort as they stomped on the Brazilian side 6-2 in Japan. Orient got off to a quick start when Christopher Eagles made a superb pass that found David Poole with just enough room to blast the ball inside the near right post past Rogerio Ceni. Poole then barely missed the far post on another good chance two minutes later before adding his 2nd marker of the match when he pounced on the loose ball after Julio Santos had made a good tackle on Milan Baros. Poole snapped his rising shot home to make it 2-0. Jan Evrard's slow reactions cost Orient a goal to buoy Sao Paulo. Sebastien Frey had parried away a low blast by Luis Fabiano, but Evrard failed to quickly clear it and Antonio Fernando Teixeira da Silva swooped in to drive it inside the left post past Frey. The match quickly turned into a keeper's worst dream for Rogerio Ceni. Stephen Pearson showed good vision to find Baros unmarked in the area and Baros ripped a hard shot off the left post. As Rogerio Ceni whirled to try and grab the rebound off the post, he accidently swept the ball into the net for an own goal and returned the Orient lead to 2 goals. Minutes later it was another mistake by Rogerio Ceni, as he mishandled the ball into the net after Pearson headed a Daniel Fredheim Holm corner directly to him for his 2nd own goal. Baros then showed exquisite touch in shooting, as he sent a perfectly placed ball into the upper left corner after a flick on from Poole gave him space to the left of Julio Santos to give Orient a 5-1 halftime lead. Orient piled it on when Baros made a centering pass for Danilo Arrieta- on for a tiring Poole- and Arrieta made a beautiful sliding half-volley hook of the ball for his 5th goal of the season past a surprised Rogerio Ceni to make it 6-1. Fernando Teixeira da Silva scored a consolation goal when a hard shot from Luis Fabiano slipped through Frey's hands and rolled in front of the open right side of the net. The trip back to Europe as a celebration for both Orient and their fans who had made the trip, as they had to fly to Kiev for their Champions Cup match.

Dinamo Kiev- M.Shatskikh 46

MOM- Olexander Shovkovskiy, Dinamo Kiev

One defensive mistake and a sensational performance by keeper Olexander Shovkovskiy was enough to propel Dinamo Kiev to a 1-0 win over Orient in Kiev. The final match in Group play meant little as both clubs had clinched their respective placement and that fact showed as Orient rested many of its main players. Despite the hodge podge lineup Orient exerted extreme pressure on Kiev throughout the match and outshot them 19-5 overall. Kiev scored the only goal that mattered when Jan Evrard allowed Maxim Shatskikh to flick a centering pass on for himself beyond the flat footed Evrard. Shatskikh then drove a low shot past Sebastien Frey inside the near right post for the lone goal. Orient's placement earned them a second round matchup with Milan.

MOM- Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Leyton Orient

In a match that certainly wasn't Orient's best effort- they were able to win out over a stubborn Sheffield Wednesday side with a pair of second half goals. The first half featured play that was poor on both clubs parts as there were many missed passes and bad choices being made all over the Brisbane Road pitch. Orient started playing with more authority in the second half and finally took the lead in the match when Orri Freyr Oskarsson deflected a Jan Kristiansen corner past Andreas Isaksson. Isaksson was at fault when Orient struck for a second marker less than two minutes later. Joey Barton found Danilo Arrieta in a seam between Leigh Bromby and Danny Butterfield. Isaksson had drifted out to challenge and Arrieta displayed wonderful touch as he lofted his 20 yard shot over him into the net. Isaksson prevented the margin from becoming worse with a brilliant save on Oskarsson later in the half. Orient was happy to close out the 2-0 win that will keep them in 2nd place in the EPL.

Tottenham- S.Davies 2 J.Thomas 5

MOM- Tim Howard, Tottenham

Orient paid for a bad start to the match as the two early goals by Tottenham were enough in the 2-0 win that broomed Orient from the League Cup. Tottenham pressured Orient from the opening whistle and Hanno Balitsch made a sizzling cross that Simon Davies had little trouble heading into the left side of the net. A scramble at the edge of the area allowed Jerome Thomas to wheel and catch Sebastien Frey flat footed as he skipped his shot past him to make it 2-0. From there Tottenham turned it over to Tim Howard and their backline. They managed only 2 more shots the entire match, but Howard was stellar stopping all 14 shots that Orient put on him. Orient was left shaking their heads as they headed off after the disappointing loss.

MOM- Lee Sims, Leyton Orient

Orient managed to earn the win, but the Leicester club earned the Brisbane Road crowd's respect with a gritty display of defensive football in the 1-0 Orient win. Leicester was behind the 8-ball from the 17th minute when midfielder Tom Williamson was redcarded for a two-footed tackle on Stephen Pearson. Orient controlled the match from that point on, but despite numerous good chances they were having difficulty getting anything past Matt Murray. Murray was well supported by his backline as they managed to just barely clear away several rebounds that seemed like they would become certain Orient scores. Orient finally solved Murray when David Fox threaded his way through the crush of players to deflect a Daniel Fredheim Holm corner past Murray in the second half. Orient tried to clinch the match, but Murray resumed his stingy ways and the Orient crowd was left muttering at the strong defensive display- even as they celebrated the close Orient win.

Orient- D.Fredheim Holm 83

MOM- Daniel Fredheim Holm, Leyton Orient

In a gale-swept Reebok Stadium Orient managed to finally convert one chance to edge Bolton 1-0 in a bitterly contested match. Bolton's keeper Chris Howarth had made the big saves throughout the match- denying both Jamie Donnelly and David Poole in one-on-one situations, but he didn't have the answer when David Poole flicked on a pass from Jan Kristiansen and sent Daniel Fredheim Holm free on the right side. Fredheim Holm made a quick dip that froze Howarth and then snapped a shot into the right side of the net for the lone goal of the match. The match had been a rough one- a total of 10 yellow cards given out, evenly split between the two clubs- and both clubs were happy when the final whistle sounded and they could leave the chilly, wind-scoured pitch.

Leyton Orient (2) Manchester United (0)

Orient- J.Donnelly 8,34

Manchester United- None

MOM- Jamie Donnelly, Leyton Orient

Orient opened 2011 with a superb defensive effort and coupled with Jamie Donnelly's offense it was enough to defeat struggling Manchester United 2-0 at Brisbane Road. Manchester United came into the match under the interim guidance of Assistant Manager Claudio Ranieri after they had fired Erland Johnsen a couple days prior to the televised match. Orient struck early to set the tone of the match as Stephen Pearson sent a pass forward for Donnelly. Donnelly and Philipe Mexes tangled and the ball skipped past both of them. Donnelly's incredible acceleration allowed him to reach the ball first and Rio Ferdinand couldn't close down quickly enough from the other side to prevent Donnelly from smashing a low shot past Fabien Berthez to give Orient the important first goal. Manchester United tried to answer back quickly but Sebastien Frey was very sharp in snaring a rising blast from Sanli Tuncay. Frey then challenged Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldo missed the far post by inches. Christopher Eagles hard work paid off for Orient when he reached a loose ball and sent a pass into the space between Mexes and Ferdinand. Donnelly's electric pace got him to the ball before they could close him off and he split them on the dribble. Barthez hesitated and was lost as Donnelly had pushed the ball out enough that Barthez had a chance- but when he didn't grab it, Donnelly snapped a shot past him inside the right post for his 2nd goal of the match. With the 2-0 lead in the second half, the Orient backline- helped by Eagles and Pearson- did a stellar job in closing down the desperate ManU attack. Ronaldo had little room as Eagles helped keep him under wraps. ManU's forwards fared little better as Ruud van Nistlerooy, Tuncay and later Maxi Lopez couldn't escape the close attention from Titus Bramble and Jan Evrard. The 2-0 win extended Orient's unbeaten string to 22 matches- but still leaves them trailing red-hot Tottenham for 1st.

Blackburn (0) Leyton Orient (2)

Blackburn- None

Orient- J.Donnelly 11,48

MOM- Jamie Donnelly, Leyton Orient

In a tale of two keepers it was Sebastien Frey that won out over ex-Orient Tommy Lee as Jamie Donnelly once again provided the firepower for the close 2-0 Orient win. David Poole keyed the Orient surge in the first half when he held up the ball long enough to force Martin Taylor to commit to covering him and then slipped it past Taylor with a deft pass to send Donnelly free down the middle. Neither Maik Franz or Mark Vaughan could come in quickly enough from the wings to close down Donnelly. Donnelly's dribbling well in front of him caused Tommy Lee to break- and then stop when he wasn't sure if he could reach the ball before Donnelly. That was plenty of opportunity for Donnelly as he took the ball at speed and easily moved around Lee before firing it into the right side of the net past his ex-teammate. Orient struck again early in the second half to give themselves a cushion. Mark Harding picked out Matthew Etherington on the left sideline and Etherington took the ball right down to the byline. Etherington's outward curling cross was perfect for Donnelly to wait- and then half-volley past Lee into the left side of the net for his 2nd goal of the match. Blackburn tried to rally, but Titus Bramble did a great job of muzzling key forward Giampaolo Pazzini and Frey made two good saves on Brett Emerton and Lucas Neill to preserve another clean sheet in the 2-0 road win.

Leyton Orient (1) Fulham (0) FA Cup 3rd round

Orient- M.Baros 46

Fulham- None

MOM- Milan Barros, Leyton Orient

Orient managed to work their way into the FA Cup 4th round with a close 1-0 win over visiting Fulham. Orient played well offensively, but saw some excellent scoring chances stymied by the good work of Fulham keeper Lee Camp. Camp stopped both Milan Barros and Marco Borriello from point blank range in the first half to help ensure the two clubs went to the dressing room in a scoreless draw. Orient struck in the opening moments of the second half to grab the lead. Ryan Garry made a good tackle to knock the ball away from Dean Lewington. Orri Freyr Oskarsson sent a short pass across to Michele Marchese and Marchese lofted a pass down the pitch. Matt Sullivan and Baros jostled for the ball in the air and it went past both of them- but Baros moved quicker and fired a low blast when he reached the ball. Camp managed to block the ball, but it went right back to Baros and before Sullivan could stop him he ripped it past Camp into the left side of the net. Orient played good defense with the lead- continually frustrating Fulham's rally attempts. Baros almost clinched the match in the late stages when Robert Huth's excellent through ball sent him in free, but Camp was able to push his shot around the post. The good news for Orient in the match was the return of winger Danny Byrne, who finally returned after a 4-month absence. Byrne was lifted at halftime by Manager Drabek as a precaution, but was in fine spirits after finally playing again.

***

"It was great to have Danny Byrne back," offered Field.

Drabek nodded, "We have certainly managed to cover the spot while he was out- but our offense is in another dimension when he is playing well. I didn't want to let him risk reinjuring it in the second half, that is why I pulled him then."

Aston Villa (0) Leyton Orient (2)

Villa- None

Orient- J.Turner 9,71

MOM- John Turner, Leyton Orient

Orient defeated Aston Villa 2-0 in a bruising, foul-filled match in front of a packed house at Villa Park. Villa got off to a bad start when keeper Thomas Sorensen botched a goal kick and it went directly to Matthew Etherington. Etherington and John Turner broke in with only Dadi Einarsson back to defend. Etherington blasted a low shot that Sorenson was able to parry, but the ball came back to the open right side of the net and Turner was there to tap-in for the early Orient lead. The match grew rough as both sides were showing their dislike for each other. By halftime Orient still held their 1-0 lead and six yellow cards had been issued- three a side- along with numerous other fouls called. Orient apparently figured out that being in the ref's bad graces was not going to help them win the match and managed to avoid any further cards. Villa wasn't as fortunate as they kept trying to exert a physical presence on the match. It resulted in Fabian Andres Vargas getting a red card after he kicked out at Carl Laurie at 60 minutes. Orient took advantage of the space when Jan Evrard sent a long pass down the left sideline for Matthew Etherington. Etherington used excellent vision to realize that John Turner was unmarked just beyond the edge of the area and made a shallow cross for him. Turner produced a fabulous half-volley that sailed past Sorensen from 20 yards for his 2nd goal of the match. With the lead and Villa only having 10 men- Orient was content to play out and earn another clean sheet for Sebastien Frey in the 2-0 win.

Marchese Heading Home

In a surprise announcement today, Leyton Orient announced that they had completed a transfer sale/exchange that will send flamboyant midfielder Michele Marchese to Roma for a reported 8 Million and also Orient will receive highly touted 17 yr old English defender Steve Senior. The sale is rumored to have provisions to allow Roma to pay the bulk of the transfer amount out in increments over the next 24 months, but there was a substantial initial payment made. Marchese had signed on free with Orient after his contract had run out in Milan and has made spotty appearances on the Orient Senior side over the last two seasons. He said he was happy to be returning home to Italy and was looking forward to playing for the storied Roma side.

"Turned a nice profit on that one, didn't we?" asked Field with a grin.

Drabek smiled as well, "Makes the board happy. We are probably a little bit worse off overall, but that was a lot of money AND they gave us Senior- who they wouldn't even discuss with me before the season. It will take some time, but he is one of the best young DCs I have seen in awhile."

"Michele played well here, but I am not sure he would ever have completely fit into our system."

"I have to agree with you Spencer and ultimately that is why I made the deal. He will do better in their system- with his flamboyant play- than he would have in our system. Still, he was a good young talent and I don't like disposing of them cheaply- so we didn't."

Rooney Rumors

Rumors abounded this morning that Wayne Rooney might be leaving Everton soon. The main rumor heard whispered by insiders was that Everton might swap Rooney for David Poole, his English strike partner, who is at Leyton Orient. The 25 yr old Rooney has helped Everton to its current placement of 6th in the EPL, but apparently has been at odds with Everton manager Steve Bruce over some of Bruce's comments in the press on his recent form. Poole, who is 26, was injured while playing with the National team during the summer and has only now started to regain some of his match fitness. Poole hasn't been close to the offensive force as in his previous seasons at Orient. Orient now has the rising star of the EPL, 23 yr old Jamie Donnelly, and may be willing to relocate Poole. In an interview this morning, Orient manager Will Drabek admitted that he, "Would certainly be interested in adding a player with the quality of Rooney." Drabek also commented that he had a good relationship with Rooney, "Because of our work together on the National side."

Bruce immediately lashed out at reporters over their questions. "Wayne is an important player here at Everton and to think we would let him go is silly and pointless." Bruce also warned off any clubs that may be interested in the prize forward. Despite Bruce's comments, many in the know believe that a deal remains a possibility. They point to the fact that Everton is seriously over budget and has been losing money this season. They also point to the deteriorating relationship between Bruce and his star striker over the manager's comments in the press.

We will continue to track this rumor and report more as available.

***

Field looked up from the paper, "The paper doesn't go as far as the Football365 site on the rumor."

Drabek nodded, "They wouldn't. Being in actual print sometimes makes them a bit more cautious."

"And the truth is?" asked Field.

"The truth is that I did comment that I would be interested in adding Rooney. Who wouldn't? Will anything come of it? I didn't think so when I made the comment, but one of our scouts just called and a little birdy told him that Bruce would be willing to listen to a proposal if I made one."

They both chuckled over the birdy reference before lapsing into a moment of thought for each.

"Well, if you are actually considering a deal- then let's talk about the possibilities," said Field.

"Ok. Rooney is rated at 23 Million. That is exactly how much we have in the transfer fund at present. The word I was given through our scout though is that money won't be enough to land him- we would have to give them a player back as well."

"Did they specify a player?"

"Not really, but the hints were it would have to be a forward- since replacing Rooney will require them to get one."

"The rumor mill has David Poole moving. Would that be the deal to make?"

Drabek stared at the ceiling for a minute, "I don't know Spencer. David really is the heart and soul of this club, even with him not making as big a contribution this season. We might be a lot worse off if we sent him there."

"I have one suggestion. Danny Thompson is clearly unhappy about his role here. He wants out- he hasn't come right out and said it, but I am certain he would welcome a chance somewhere else."

"Good suggestion Spencer- let me mull that one over a night of sleep."

Poole's Parry

In comments to Football365.com last night David Poole stated that he is unhappy with the possibility of replacement as one of the cogs at Orient. "Orient was the one club that gave me a chance when I was released. I have been with the club as we moved up the ladder and as we have achieved great things. I don't want to leave, but I have to admit I don't want to be less than a full-time player here either. I feel I have earned that type of respect for my work here and on the National side." Poole, who has scored 229 goals at Orient since signing on free and has 27 International goals in only 25 International matches, was clearly worried about the rumors of his being swapped for his National strike partner Wayne Rooney. "Sure, my season hasn't been up to the past ones- but it has taken me until just recently to really regain the match fitness I had before the injury I suffered this summer. I fully expect to begin scoring more as I regain my match touch." Poole spoke about the respect he has for Leyton Orient and England manager Will Drabek, "He has spurred me to the successes I have had- when many doubted my abilities. I can't thank him enough for the opportunities he has given me."

Attempts to contact Drabek or Everton manager Steve Bruce went unanswered last night.

***

Field leaned in the office door, "How bad?"

Drabek slouched over the desk, "Bad enough. David told me he is rather unhappy with the whole situation and wanted to know where he stood with me. I assured him that I hadn't discussed swapping him to Everton for Rooney, but I got the impression he wasn't ready to believe me on that."

"Ouch. Are you sure you want to leave him in the lineup for today's match?"

"Yes- he will start. The lineup is set for today- I don't plan on changing it just because of this situation."

Leyton Orient (1) Wolves (0)

Orient- O.Oskarsson 63

Wolves- None

MOM- David Poole, Leyton Orient

It was a rousing ovation that boomed from the sellout crowd for David Poole as he accepted his MOM honours with a wave to the Brisbane Road faithful. Many in the crowd believed that this might well be Poole's swan song for Orient and that the rumors of his imminent swap for Wayne Rooney might occur very soon. Orient and Poole both seemed distracted by the swirl of comments and opinions on the rumors. Orient played well offensively in edging the Wolves as they kept control of the tempo through much of the match- but the close score can be directly attributed to Poole's poor finishing. Poole had two superb one-on-one chances in the first half as good passing sequences put him in free on Conejo Perez, but both times Conejo Perez was able to block away his low shots. Poole had a golden chance to give Orient the lead early in the second half, but missed inches wide on the far post and was left staring unbelievingly at his miss. Orient finally took the lead when Danilo Arrieta swept down the left sideline and lofted a centering pass to the middle. Orri Freyr Oskarsson showed exquisite timing as he leaped and deflected the ball past Conejo Perez to give Orient the lead. Poole missed one more superb chance late in the second half when Stephen Pearson found him with space in the area- but his shot skimmed the top of the bar. Poole's selection as MOM seems to have been more for honouring his play at Orient- since he was clearly off his game tonight and a more deserving player would have been Carl Laurie.

***

Drabek sighed, "It clearly is affecting him- I couldn't believe he missed that many good chances. I don't think I have ever seen him miss that many in one match in the whole time he has been here."

Field nodded agreement, "Sometimes it is just a circus. Right now I feel like I am in the maze of funny mirrors."

Drabek laughed despite the worry lines that still creased his forehead, "Our little birdy passed the word. Bruce asked me to call him tonight. One way or another I am going to either get this decided or get clear of this whole rumor mill mess."

Wayne's World

Welcome to your nightly Football365.com update on the rumors of Wayne Rooney moving. There are reports that several clubs besides Leyton Orient are interested in landing the services of Rooney. Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United appear to be weighing their options on the 25 yr old- but there have been no reports of substansive offers on the part of any of them. The most persistent rumor still has Rooney heading to Leyton Orient, with Orient bundling David Poole, unhappy 21 yr old Danny Thompson and a boatload of cash to Everton for Rooney. None of the involved parties were willing to offer any comments on any possible proceedings.

Rooney showed he is able to shake off the controversy as he scored a pair of goals to send Everton into penalties against Aston Villa in their FA Cup 3rd round replay and didn't need to take his penalty as Everton had already clinched the win before his chance. Rooney's performance can be placed in sharp contrast to Poole's performance as he didn't capitalize in Orient's match against the Wolves.

***

"It's big Spencer," calmly stated an obviously tired Drabek.

After hearing the details all Field could say was "Wow!"

"We will talk in the morning about the impact on the club."

STUNNER!

In a terse announcement this morning, Leyton Orient manager Will Drabek announced that Orient and Everton had successfully concluded negotiations to complete a transfer that would bring Wayne Rooney to Leyton Orient. The price to Orient was high for Rooney as they had to package rising star Jamie Donnelly and promising youngster Danny Thompson along with a reported 15 Million in cash to bring Rooney to Brisbane Road. Drabek took only a couple questions before ending the press conference, but did state he was pleased to bring Rooney to Orient to pair with his National side strike partner David Poole. The announcement of the transfer ends a wild week of rumors about Rooney's departure. Rooney will reportedly be dressed and in the starting lineup for Orient's match against against Arsenal at Ashburton Grove tomorrow. Everton manager Steve Bruce refused comment on the transfer, but was heard to be happy about adding the electric Donnelly to their starting lineup.

Rooney, who had scored 167 goals at Everton and has 26 International goals, was reportedly pleased about moving to Orient with the chance to play in Europe and also to move to the EPL leader. His contract is rumored to now be the highest on the Orient squad. Thought Orient put a significant chunk of cash into the deal, it appears that the linchpin of the deal was their inclusion of rising star Jamie Donnelly. Donnelly, a 23 yr old, originally arrived in Orient as an 18 yr old after they purchased him from Chesterfield. Donnelly has been the sensation of the EPL this season after not gaining a lot of regular playing time in his other seasons with Orient. In his breakout season Donnelly has scored 24 goals in 22 matches and is leading the EPL in goals with 21 as well as leading with an average rating of 8.30 and trailing only Mark Quigley with MOM honours (7 to Quigley's 8). Danny Thompson also will move to Everton in the deal. Thompson has been featured on the National Under-21 side and according to scouts we spoke with has a very bright future. The 21 yr old was purchased from Norwich by Orient last season, but was featured only rarely on the Senior side and was disappointed about his lack of playing time. The boost to Everton will come from the lightning pace that both Donnelly and Thompson add to what was a somewhat slow side.

It appears the rumors of Orient's swapping David Poole for Rooney never had much merit as Drabek commented, "We would be foolish to cast away an important cornerstone in the development of Orient as a significant English club."

***

"That ended well- I guess," quietly commented Drabek.

"Jamie is going to be a great player- we are going to miss his scoring punch if this doesn't work out," replied Field.

Drabek snapped a stare at Field, "Spencer- we already know that Wayne and David are a potent punch- if they can do it Internationally- they can certainly do it in the EPL."

"Likely true, but the dynamics of our club is different than the National side."

"That is a good point- but I really do believe this is best in the long run for Orient. I wouldn't have made the deal otherwise. I think Wayne and David are a better combination up front that Jamie and David were- so I think it will work out well."

"Did I hear a rumor about Fox?"

Drabek laughed, "In all the turmoil, I forgot to tell you about that. Arsenal wants David Fox, but I turned them down flat- we won't be selling him."

Arsenal (5) Leyton Orient (3)

Arsenal- Adriano 16-P,28,39,60-P,68

Orient- D.Poole 22 S.Pearson 36 W.Rooney 49

MOM- Adriano, Arsenal

Orient's 26 match unbeaten streak came to a crashing halt at Ashburton Grove in front of a full house of delighted Arsenal fans. Adriano single-handedly carried the home side to the 5-3 win as he scored all 5 goals and left Orient manager Drabek fuming at the performance of his backline. The loss ruined the spectacle of Wayne Rooney's Orient debut. After missing close on a couple chances in the opening stages of the first half, Orient fell behind when Robert Huth was whistled for pushing Adriano in the area. Adriano calmly fired the penalty kick past Sebastien Frey and he was off on his best ever match for Arsenal. Orient evened the match when Philipe Senderos tried to knock the ball away from David Poole on Poole's run. He did that successfully, but Wayne Rooney picked up the loose ball and returned it to a now unmarked Poole. Chris Kirkland got a portion of the ball on Poole's shot, but not enough to keep it from trickling into the net for Poole's 10th goal of the season. Adriano put Arsenal back in front when Huth didn't challenge him closely enough and he had plenty of time to rifle a shot past Frey inside the far right post for his 2nd goal of the match. Orient again fought back to get the match to 2-2 when Stephen Pearson deflected a David Fox corner into the near right side of the net past Kirkland. Just as quickly, Adriano again moved Arsenal ahead. Ashley Cole took the ball away from Danny Byrne and quickly sent it to Adriano. Adriano easily left Huth in his wake and then was able to shield off Lee Sims as he tried to close down from his fullback spot- before blasting a shot past Frey to complete his hat-trick and give Arsenal a 3-2 halftime lead. Once more, Orient fought back to even when Wayne Rooney scored a terrific goal in his debut. Fox threaded a through ball past John Halls and Rooney quickly whipped it inside the left post before Kirkland could react. Adriano wasn't done yet though and he converted his 2nd penalty kick of the match after Danny Byrne was yellow carded for a handball in the area. As Orient tried to press forward to equalize once more, Arsenal made them pay when Poole showed poor judgement in flicking a goal kick from Frey back toward Sims. Frederik Ljungberg picked up the ball and sent Adriano in free and he drove his 5th goal past a diving Frey to cap a sensational match. Orient tried to rally, but found Kirkland steady in the closing moments of the 5-3 win for the home side.

"That was embarassing," muttered Drabek.

"Take away those penalties and we are even with them," countered Field.

"That's true- but that is not what I was embarrassed about. We ranted at the backline about Adriano during halftime- did it make a difference? No! I am extremely disappointed in Huth's play- he may be a top choice for the German team, but he hasn't shown nearly that level of play here- and we are paying him top money."

"I think all of the excitement of Rooney coming here got to the club. I think now that things should die down, we can get back our focus."

Drabek shrugged tiredly, "We just need to remember how we got this far in the season. Our defense had only allowed 7 league goals going into that match- and they get 5 on us!" He shook his head again and walked out of the office.

Malbranque Moves to Orient

In another surprise transfer announcement, Leyton Orient announced that they had purchased 31 yr old AMRC Steed Malbranque from Newcastle for 2.5 Million. Malbranque had signed on free with Newcastle during the summer, but hadn't been able to work his way into regular play there and had become unsettled at his status. Malbranque's addition reportedly was to balance out the loss of Michele Marchese according to sources in the Orient camp, but David Mannix made several public comments that reflected his own lack of playing time- and that there was little faith being shown in him. Orient manager Drabek declined comment, but there are rumors that Mannix's actions will earn him a place on the transfer list in the next few days.

***

"Why did you add Malbranque?" asked Field.

Drabek replied, "A couple reasons. One is that he has been a player I have admired for awhile and I do think he will help us. The other is that Danny Byrne isn't quite ready to be the same player he had been for us- and it may take until next season to see him back to his former self. With Malbranque able to play the wing- it gives us more depth- losing Marchese hurt there- and should help us for at least the rest of this season.

QPR (0) Leyton Orient (1) FA Cup 4th round

QPR- None

Orient- W.Rooney 88

MOM- Clark Carlisle, QPR

Division 1 QPR gave Orient all they could handle at Loftus Road, but Orient won 1-0 on a late goal to move on in the FA Cup. QPR had the first good chance to gain the lead in the match, but Phil Poole missed over the net when all alone in front of Sebastien Frey. Orient had problems getting untracked as the QPR backline- led by Clark Carlisle- did a masterful job in closing down and limiting good chances. Darren Colemen came up with a pair of key saves early in the second half when he pushed a shot by Steed Malbranque over the net and then pushed a shot from Matthew Etherington around the post. QPR's undoing came later in the second half when David O'Brien earned his 2nd yellow card at 71 minutes. At 79 minutes Marc Bircham pushed Wayne Rooney in the chest and also earned a redcard. QPR tried to survive regulation scoreless, but there was just too much room for the Orient offense and Jan Kristiansen (on for a tiring David Fox) sent a pass that found Rooney in the area after he had slipped his marker. Rooney fired the ball past Coleman into the far left side of the net for a late match winner as Orient was pleased to avoid a replay.

Leyton Orient (3) Charlton (0)

Orient- O.Oskarsson 58 J.Turner 65,81

Charlton- None

MOM- John Turner, Leyton Orient

There were a smattering of boos as Orient left the pitch at halftime, held to a scoreless first half by last place Charlton. The fans were in a restive state after the Arsenal loss and wanted to see some improvement. Orient came out and improved their level of play in the second half and Charlton could not contain them as they pushed for a 3-0 home win. Charlton had the better of chances in the first half, but James Hicks played well to earn his clean sheet. The 18 yr old continues to demonstrate moxy beyond his young years and he stopped both Francis Jeffers and Claus Jensen on good chances in the first half. Orient had only managed some long shots by their midfielders in the first half but their play started gelling in the second half. Ryan Garry sent a scorching pass to John Turner just outside the area. Instead of collecting the pass, Turner used his vision to see Orri Freyr Oskarsson steaming in from the midfield and he touched the ball past his defender to Oskarsson. Oskarsson didn't miss as he struck his shot inside the right post past Brad Friedal to put Orient up with his 10th goal of the season. It was Oskarsson's turn next as he made a soft chip pass that found Milan Baros breaking past his marker on the left side of the area. Baros slotted the ball back for Turner and he blasted a shot. Friedal managed to block it, but it bounced back toward Turner and he had an easy time tapping the ball into the right side of the net to make it 2-0 Orient. Oskarsson keyed the last goal too as he dribbled into the area. Djimi Traore challenged him and Oskarsson deftly laid the ball for Turner. Turner made one quick step before blasting a hard, low shot. Friedal almost grabbed it, but the ball slipped out of his grasp and trickled into the net for Turner's 2nd goal of the match as he capped the scoring in the 3-0 win.

Bradford City (1) Leyton Orient (1)

Bradford- J.Davis 69

Orient- D.Poole 74

MOM- David Poole, Leyton Orient

Orient squandered numerous chances against 16th place Bradford City and was forced to battle back to earn a 1-1 draw at Valley Parade. Despite outshooting the home side 13-4, Orient found themselves behind in the second half when Stephen O'Donnell took full advantage of Mark Harding's inattention to James Davis. O'Donnell's pass found Davis well beyond the wandering Harding and he broke in before rocketing a low shot past Sebastien Frey into the net as he scored in his Bradford debut. Orient fought back when David Fox showed excellent vision when he picked out David Poole with space while on the move at right sideline. Fox made a splendid pass that found Poole with Eddie Howe unable to close down quickly enough on him to prevent Poole from making a perfectly placed shot inside the far left post past Alan Combe. Orient was unable to gain the goal to take the lead as they saw Wayne Rooney rap one off the post in second half extra time and had to settle for the 1-1 draw.

big dave- ultimate- sorry that the story isn't meeting your standards, but the initial plot that drove this is done for now. There are stretches in this- and this is one- where there is less added info from Drabek and Field, there will be more down the road. If you look around, you will find many stories that don't differ appreciably in approach from where this is right now.

Coventry (1) Leyton Orient (0)

Coventry- L.Moore 15

Orient- None

MOM- Owain Fon Williams, Coventry

The expected Orient surge of offense with the addition of Wayne Rooney hasn't yet materialized, as they dominated Coventry but fell to them 1-0 when they couldn't find a way to get the ball past keeper Owain Fon Williams. Coventry took the lead when poor play by the Orient backline allowed Shola Ameobi to cross to an unmarked Luke Moore and Moore had an easy time directing it into the left side of the net past James Hicks. Orient tried everything to rally from the deficit, but were left wondering what is going on with their sputtering offense. Rooney had the best chances for Orient as he had three good ones- one hit the post, one was parried away by Fon Williams and the third was cleared off the line by defender James Panayi. Orient outshot the home side 14-4 in the match.

England- J.Jenas 6,24 W.Rooney 37 L.Sims 48 S.Moore 57 J.Morris 88

Cameroon- V.Mezague 56

MOM- Jermaine Jenas, England

In front of a smallish crowd at Wembley, England had an easy time rolling over Cameroon in their friendly. England featured a hodge-podge lineup as Manager Drabek decided to give debuts to Clark Carlisle and Jody Morris during the match. Jermaine Jenas staked England to an early lead when he deflected a Matthew Etherington corner past Idris Kameni for the early lead. Jenas then repeated his feat on a David Fox corner for his 2nd goal of the match. Titus Bramble's long pass found Wayne Rooney in the area. Rooney pushed the ball over to Orient strike partner David Poole and Poole immediately squared it back for Rooney to blast a shot past Kameni into the far right side of the net. Lee Sims then chipped in with his 1st International goal to open the second half when he knocked home a rebound after Etherington's free kick bounced back off the crossbar. Cameroon got on the board as Valery Mezague deflected a Modeste M'Bami corner past Paul Robinson. England answered immediately when Jerome Thomas lofted a centering pass and Stefan Moore overpowered keeper Kameni as he tried to challenge him for the ball. Sims' good pass down the right set Michael Owen up and he danced past the defender. Owen then unselfishly laid the ball back to the edge of the area and Jody Morris blasted a shot past Kameni to score in his first Cap and finish off the 6-1 win for England.

Liverpool (0) Leyton Orient (0) League Cup 5th round

Liverpool- None

Orient- None

MOM- Ross Flitney, Liverpool

Liverpool and Orient battled to a scoreless draw in their 5th round FA CUp match. Liverpool may have been relegated to Division 1 (they are currently 2nd to West Ham there), but they still have the same core players that made them a difficult club in EPL- Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyppia and Anthony Le Tallec. Orient went with mostly their 2nd line players at Anfield and it allowed Liverpool to control the tempo of play through much of the match. Owen, Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle all took their best shots at beating James Hicks- but he was able to save all of their good chances in the scoreless first half. Orient managed a couple opportunities in the early 2nd half, but Ross Flitney came up with excellent saves against Milan Baros and Daniel Fredheim Holm. Liverpool pushed to avoid a replay at Brisbane Road in the late stages of the match, but Hicks again stepped up and kept the clean sheet as the two clubs finished out the scoreless draw.

"James (Hicks) cemented his place on the club for a long time- he is really developing nicely," commented Drabek.

"I would rather we had put forth a better effort offensively and won this one," replied Field.

Leyton Orient (1) Newcastle (2)

Orient- L.Sims 90

Newcastle- Lucio 2 J.Jenas 63-P

MOM- Lee Sims, Leyton Orient

Orient dropped to 2nd place in the EPL as they staged an abysmal showing against Newcastle in front of their disappointed fans. Newcastle took the lead in the opening moments of the first half when Lucio deflected a Yldiriy Basturk corner past Sebastien Frey. Orient lacked cohesion offensively and appeared confused throughout the first half- as they missed passes and wound up taking long shots when they had unmarked players in the area. Newcastle moved up 2-0 when Titus Bramble was whistled for bumping Michael Chopra in the air in the area. Jermaine Jenas converted the penalty kick and the Orient fans began leaving the stadium. Orient managed a consolation goal in second half injury time when Steed Malbranque blasted a free kick and Shay Given dove to block it. Lee Sims pounced on the rebound and slotted it home, but it was the only offensive highlight for Orient today.

***

"We certainly don't seem to have improved with Rooney aboard." offered Field.

Drabek shrugged, "I still think it is and was the right decision in the long run for us. Despite all those deriding me for sending Donnelly in the exchange- he is having his 1st good season. David Poole has had many good seasons and I really do believe he will break out of his slump soon. Right now I think it is just a matter of gelling. Hopefully, Danny Byrne can get back to playing well- he really helps set the tone for us when he is right, but we haven't seen that 'Byrne' yet this season."

Milan- None

Orient- None

MOM- Sebastien Frey, Leyton Orient

Orient's offense continued to sputter, but they played a strong defensive match as they battled Milan to a scoreless draw in Milan. The first half featured few good scoring chances by either club with most of the play flowing between their respective midfields. Orient generated a wonderful chance in the opening moments of the second half, but Wayne Rooney's shot skimmed off the bar. Mark Harding was caught pressing forward and a through ball to Ricardo Oliveira looked like disaster for Orient, but Sebastien Frey made a terrific save- pushing his shot over the bar. Moments later it was Orient with a golden chance as Orri Freyr Oskarsson, who subbed on for tiring David Fox, was alone in front of Mickael Landreau, but shot over the net. Ricardo Oliveira had another great chance to give Milan the lead, but Frey smothered his low shot to preserve the scoreless draw late in the second half.

Leyton Orient (4) Liverpool (0) FA Cup 5th round replay

Orient- D.Poole 24,26,34,90

Liverpool- None

MOM- David Poole, Leyton Orient

Orient's sleeping giant- David Poole- awoke and when the final whistle had sounded it was clear Liverpool had seen enough of him as his 4 goals led Orient to a 4-0 win and a place in the 6th round of the FA Cup against Chelsea. Poole and surprise starter John Turner played an excellent give and go passing sequence to put Orient into the lead. Poole lofted a ball out to Turner on the left and then Turner's centering pass was perfectly placed for Poole to head it past Ross Flitney- though Flitney did manage to get a hand on it before it went in. Joey Barton's through ball went past a David Raven and left Poole with an easy move past a stranded Flitney before slotting it home for his 2nd goal of the match. Poole completed his hat-trick thanks to a quick, deft pass from Steed Malbranque. Lee Sims made a good entry pass to find Malbranque and Malbranque showed his great awareness by just touching the ball enough to square it for Poole. Poole's quick shot was by Flitney before he could react and Orient held the 3-0 halftime lead. Liverpool tried to open up their offense in the second half, but neither Michael Owen nor Florent Sinama-Pingolle could find room against the swarming play of the Orient backline. Orient added another goal for measure in second half injury time as the hustling Danilo Arrieta, on for Turner, managed to reach a long pass first and hook it across for Poole. Poole had a simple move around the out-of-position Flitney and tapped it in for his 4th goal of the match and 15th goal of the season to finish out the 4-0 win.

***

"Hmm, why the explosion this time," wondered Field aloud.

"I think it was just not having the pressure of Rooney in the lineup with him at the same time. That and our whole midfield actually moved the ball much better in this match than we have been seeing. The funny part is that David could easily have had 7 goals in this match. He missed wide early, Flitney made a good save on him early in the second and then again another good save on him midway through the second half. But the important thing is that I think he regained some confidence today," stated Drabek.

Chelsea- None

MOM- Danny Byrne, Leyton Orient

Orient proved that the Liverpool offensive display was no fluke as they crushed Chelsea 6-0 at Brisbane Road to move on to the FA Cup Semi-finals. In front of a record crowd, Orient got off to a fast start when David Poole scored in the opening moments. Wayne Rooney sent a long pass up the center and it bounced off and past Simone Padoin. Poole reached it first and made a quick move to the right past Marcos before firing the ball into the center of the net. Chelsea tried to answer quickly as a good pass from Hugo Viana put Joe Cole in free on Sebastien Frey- but Frey stymied Cole with a fingertip save. Chelsea's nightmare start continued when Lee Sims made a good interception and sent a pass down the right side for Danny Byrne. Byrne made a terrific curling cross that Rooney put a strong head on. Marcos parried Rooney's shot, but Poole was quicker than Padoin to the rebound and slipped it into the net for his 2nd goal of the match. Rooney added a goal with a superb touch, that ever so slightly changed the direction of sizzling pass from David Fox and was enough to leave Marcos flat footed as the ball skimmed into the right side of the net. With a 3-0 halftime margin, Orient was content to play more defensively in the second half. Carl Laurie took the ball past Valdo on the left sideline, but his centering pass was knocked away in a jumble in front of Marcos. Danny Byrne picked up the loose ball just beyond the area and threaded a shot through the crowd that Marcos never saw until it went past him for Byrne's 1st goal of the season. Poole's excellent flick on allowed Danilo Arrieta, on for tiring Rooney, to run on to the ball and he made Marcos pay for his inattentiveness as he lobbed a shot over him into the far right side of the net from 30 yards to make it 5-0. Jan Kristiansen capped the scoring when he picked up a loose ball outside the area and whistled a shot inside the left post to make the final score 6-0 in front of the pleased Brisbane Road faithful.

Drabek smiled, "They are working it out- it took time- but we both saw how much awareness of each other they had today."

"Chelsea aren't a bad club, but they didn't know what hit them today- our counterattacking was excellent."

"Too bad David (Poole) missed his hat-trick. He had Marcos out of the way when he fired and hit the post early in the second half."

"He may not have scored- but it was an excellent move on a pretty good keeper."

Orient- O.Oskarsson 8,40 D.Poole 39 W.Rooney 49

Milan- None

MOM- Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Leyton Orient

The surprise start of Orri Freyr Oskarsson over David Fox seemed to both invigorate the Orient offense and throw the Milan defensive equation out of whack. It was clear from the opening whistle that this wasn't the Orient side that had played to a scoreless draw in Milan. Orient's aggressiveness paid off early when a through ball from Stephen Pearson found Oskarsson lurking in the area. He made a quick move and then snapped a shot past Mickael Landreau for the lead. Milan tried to rally and Sebastien Frey had to be very sharp to stop both Ilan and Mikel Arteta from close range to keep the visitors off the scoreboard. Orient made the home fans much more comfortable with a double strike late in the first half. Off a scramble at the edge of the six-yard box, Pearson chipped it out to Wayne Rooney. Rooney's tried to quickly move it on to a streaking David Poole, but Alessandro Nesta got in the way. Unfortunately for him, Nesta was off balance and the ball did bounce past him to Poole- who was in stride still. Although Landreau challenged Poole, it was Poole's precision shot inside the right post that put Orient ahead 2-0. Orient quickly made Milan pay for leaving Oskarsson unmarked just inside the area. Lee Sims' searching pass picked him out and he whipped it past Landreau into the right side of the net before Fabricio Collocini could close him down for his 2nd goal of the match and the 2nd Orient goal in a two minute span. Sebastien Frey caught Milan trying to press forward in the opening moments of the second half and his long kick allowed Rooney to run on to the ball with enough time to pick his shot. Rooney, who had barely missed on two good earlier chances, didn't miss this time and drilled a low shot into the left side of the net. With the 4-0 lead Orient was content to blunt the half-hearted rally attempts of the Italian side and they closed out the match with another clean sheet for Frey. Three English clubs made it through the 2nd phase (Arsenal beat Porto and Tottenham won on penalties against PSV after two scoreless ties) and two of them will face off as Orient receives another shot at the club that knocked them out of the League Cup when they face Tottenham.

MOM- Fitz Hall, Southampton

Orient wasted several chances to score in the second half and wound up in a scoreless draw. Southampton played much better than Orient in the first half and also had the better chances, but James Hicks kept them from converting any of them. The second half saw Orient start to press the attack more and Robert Green was called on to make good saves against David Fox and David Poole early on. Wayne Rooney had the best Orient chances as twice he was sent in free by nice flick-ons from Poole- but he missed over the net with both chances and Orient was forced to split the points with the home side.

***

Drabek muttered, "David Poole was too unselfish today- he had a couple of great chances that I thought he was going to shoot, instead he left the ball off for Rooney both times."

Field nodded, "Well, it would have looked fine if Rooney had converted- but he was having a tough time today. Neither shot was close actually- both well above the crossbar from close range."

"It was a very frustrating result."

MOM- Carl Laurie, Leyton Orient

In a showdown match between 3rd place Chelsea and 2nd place Orient- Orient duplicated the rout they handed Chelsea 10 days ago in their FA Cup match, as they easily beat their visitors 5-0. Wayne Rooney gave Orient the momentum with the first goal. Orri Freyr Oskarsson sent him a nice pass, but his centering pass to David Poole was headed away by Simone Padoin. Rooney got the ball back and laid it off for Oskarsson. Instead of shooting, Oskarsson tapped the ball quickly back to Rooney and his shot caught Marcos moving as the ball skittered past him for Rooney's 5th Orient goal while he tried to stop. Jan Evrard made a superb through ball that found Rooney and he fired it past Marcos inside the far right post for his 2nd goal of the match. Oskarsson then dealt a wonderful pass that found Poole free on the right and he blasted a rising shot past a diving Marcos. It was 4-0 at halftime as Stephen Pearson picked up a loose ball and tapped it to unmarked Oskarsson in the area. Oskarsson's low shot skipped past Marcos and bounced in off the left post. Orient capped the scoring with the lone goal of the second half as Pearson challenged Marcos for a Daniel Fredheim Holm corner and knocked it past him to finish off the demoralized visitors in the convincing 5-0 win.

MOM- Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Leyton Orient

Orient and Tottenham staged one of the wildier Champions Cup matches in recent memory as Orient hung on for the 4-3 win in their 1st Leg at White Hart Lane. Orient started quickly as Orri Freyr Oskarsson made Ledley King pay for a momentary indecision. On a loose ball in the middle of the field Oskarsson raced to the ball and by the time King decided he couldn't reach it and tried to backtrack- Oskarsson had sent the ball ahead to Wayne Rooney. Rooney blasted a 25 yard shot inside the far right post past Tim Howard to give Orient the early lead. Tottenham answered when Robbie Keane's blinding pace allowed him to outrace Titus Bramble to the far side of the net and be in perfect position to knock in a cross from Helder Postiga. Orient wasted little time retaking the lead. Carl Laurie sent a quick pass to the right following a scramble at the edge of the area. Danny Byrne reached the ball and then easily went past Gareth Barry before crossing hard to the near post. Oskarsson was in the right spot to step in and head the cross inside the post. Orient went ahead 3-1 on another sensational counterattack. Laurie sent a 40 yard through ball that went past Barry and right to David Poole inside the area. Poole fired a shot into the upper right corner past Howard for his 20th goal of the season to make it 3-1 Orient. Tottenham drew a goal back as Helder Postiga's pace again torched Orient. Lee Sims chipped a ball for Jan Evrard in the middle, but Postiga swept in and past Evrard and blasted a low shot that Sebastien Frey couldn't get a hand on. It was 4-2 at halftime when Sean Davis was yellow carded for holding back Rooney as he tried to leap and head a long pass. Poole converted the penalty kick for his 2nd goal of the match and a 4-2 halftime lead. There was no quit in Tottenham and they survived an early scare when Rooney was in alone on Howard, but Howard managed to parry away his shot. They were back within a goal when Postiga and Keane worked their magic again. Postiga leaped and flicked on a long pass from Davis and both Bramble and Frey didn't react quickly enough as Keane burst to the ball and hooked it past Frey into the net to make it a 4-3 match. Tottenham almost had the equalizer moments later as Postiga was loose again behind the Orient backline, but Frey managed to push his shot around the post. Stilian Petrov came close in the waning moments, but his shot skimmed the bar and Orient breathed a sigh of relief with the 4-3 win in the books.Tottenham paid for their aggressive play in the match as they earned 6 yellow cards (to Orient's one) due to their rough tackling. In other Quarterfinal action- Arsenal beat FC Bayern 2-0 at Ashburton Grove. Olympiakos beat Rangers 1-0 in Greece and Sparta Prague and Celtic fought to a scoreless draw in Prague.

***

"Whew!" offered Field as he slumped in the folding metal chair.

"It wasn't a pretty defensive effort- the pace of both Keane and Postiga was something we didn't deal well with and Sebastien Frey wasn't at his best in the match- but we do have a win and 4 away goals down. We need to play better at home, but I am certain we can."

MOM- David Poole, England

It was the Orient show on display as England rolled over Iceland 4-0 at Wembley on the strength of goals from Leyton Orient players. The worries about Poole-Rooney working together on both Orient and the National side proved misplaced today. England maintained control of the match the entire first half, but were having difficulty getting their shots on net. Both Rooney and Poole missed over the net on good chances. England's mobile backline gave Iceland fits and Glen Johnson keyed the first goal with a long centering pass. Poole leaped and let the ball go through and Wayne Rooney was on the far post to tap the ball in for a 1-0 lead at halftime for the home side. Iceland's determination started cracking in the second half and Carl Laurie's brilliant long pass into the area was an easy volley for David Poole to make it 2-0. An innocent throw-in led to Rooney's 2nd goal of the match as he deflected a cross from David Thompson inside the right post. Matthew Etherington finished out the English scoring with a spectacular 30 yard blast after he collected a loose ball outside the area. In other Group C play Croatia easily saw off Faroe Islands by a 4-1 score.

Millwall- None

Orient- None

MOM- Nicky Weaver, Millwall

Millwall ended Orient's FA Cup run as they knocked them on penalties after the two sides battled to a scoreless draw in extra time. Millwall had a great chance to take the lead in the early portion of the game when Titus Bramble was whistled for pushing Mark Quigley in the air as both were trying to head a looping centering pass. Quigley took the kick from the spot, but Sebastien Frey saved it. Quigley tried to half-volley the rebound in- but it sailed over the top of the net. Orient missed some good early opportunities as Celestine Babayaro made a great saving tackle when it looked like Milan Baros was in alone on Weaver. Weaver also made a sensational save on John Turner as he was parked alone in front and Joey Barton made a good pass to get him the ball. The two sides battled up and down in the second half, but neither backline was allowing good chances at scoring. Orient suffered a blow midway through the second half when Jan Evrard received his 2nd yellow card and an early departure. Millwall received a scare in the second half extra time as Orient managed a last counterattack and Danilo Arrieta looked like he might score at the edge of the six yard box- but Weaver was up to the challenge and blocked away his low shot. Neither side was able to get a shot in extra time and Orient was left on outside looking in of the Finals when both Daniel Fredheim Holm and Joey Barton's penalty kicks were saved by Weaver to boost Millwall into the Finals.

Fredheim Holm Out For Rest of Season

Leyton Orient's winger Daniel Fredheim Holm suffered a groin injury that will keep him out the remainder of the 2010-11 campaign. Orient chose to send him to rehabilitation after surgery versus holding out hope that Fredheim Holm might return for a match in May. Both Orient Manager Will Drabek and Fredheim Holm expressed frustration at the injury as he had been enjoying a fine season at Orient.

With the aggregate lead and 4 away goals already- Orient came ready to play a defensive match as they hosted Tottenham in the 2nd leg of their Championship Cup Quarterfinal matchup. The strategy worked to perfection as Orient avoided the sweeping runs of pacey Robbie Keane and Helder Postiga and kept the Tottenham offense frustrated througout the match. Orient managed a scarce chance or two in the match and Tim Howard made a sensational save on John Turner to keep the visitors in the match in the first half. Orient was playing without Wayne Rooney, Lee Sims and Daniel Fredheim Holm in the match and then suffered the loss of Jan Evrard late in the first half- but their depth won through as they played steadily in front of Sebastien Frey all match and helped him earn another clean sheet. In the other Quartefinal matches- Sparta Prague drew 2-2 against Celtic at Glasgow to advance on away goals. FC Bayern came close to getting even with Arsenal, but fell short as they won 1-0 at Bayern- but lost on 2-1 aggregate. Rangers scored a late goal to win 3-1 over Olympiakos and move on to the Semifinals on 3-2 aggregate.

"The Board was pleased. Not only did we win- which earned another 2.7 Million- but the gate receipts broke the record today," stated Drabek.

"How much in gate today?" asked Field.

"1.2 Million."

Drabek nodded and grinned back at him.

In a match that had become a 'must-win' for Orient with Tottenham's 3-0 road win over Bradford City, it was Orient's precision passing that helped them to a comfortable 4-0 win at Brisbane Road. After Russell Howarth made a pair of good saves on Wayne Rooney and David Poole to blunt the first good Orient chances, it was Stephen Pearson who picked out Orri Freyr Oskarsson unmarked just inside the area. Graham Campbell tried to close quickly, but Oskarsson fired a shot inside the right post past Howarth to give Orient the lead with his 15th goal of the season. Danny Byrne's sensational long cross picked out Oskarsson again lurking just inside the area- this time Oskarsson fired his shot inside the left post for his 2nd goal of the match to open the second half. Orient quickly added another when Danny Byrne's swerving 25 yard free kick eluded Howarth and went into the left side of the net. Joey Barton's through ball found Steed Malbranque (on for slightly injured Oskarsson) on the move and after Howarth parried away his initial shot- he was first to the rebound and fired it into the net for his 1st goal at Orient to cap the 4-0 win. The win sets up the showdown match at White Hart Lane between 1st place Tottenham and 2nd place Orient.

Orient- D.Poole

MOM- David Poole, Leyton Orient

Trailing Tottenham by 3 points coming into the match, it was a match Orient knew if they lost would certainly cost them the EPL title and if they only managed a draw, would likely cost them the EPL title. Orient went home a winner in the match thanks to a scintallating performance from David Poole in a 4-2 win that was dominated by the two offenses. Orient turned the match into a nightmare start for Tottenham as Orri Freyr Oskarsson blitzed down the middle and broke to the left before sending a short cross back to the right. Waiting for the cross was David Poole and he cut in front of Ledley King to head the ball past Tim Howard. Orient then worked a counterattack to perfection as Oskarsson found John Turner out on the left and he showed a perfect sense of when to thread a pass across to Poole. Poole <was unmarked on the corner of the net for an easy tap-in for his 2nd goal of the match and a 2-0 lead. Tottenham roared right back into the match behind the lightning pace of Helder Postiga and Robbie Keane. On an Orient free kick, Mbulelo Mabizela blocked the ball away into the Orient end and Helder Postiga easily won the footrace to the ball. Postiga made a quick dip and then slid the ball under a diving Sebastien Frey to make it 2-1. Simon Davies then sent Postiga racing down the right side again and this time- with Robbie Keane a perfect decoy- Postiga sent a pass across to Sean Davis at the far post and he had his easy tap-in for his 50th goal at Tottenham to quickly bring the match back to 2-2. Orient took the lead again early in the second half when King tried to send a through ball, but saw Steed Malbranque step in front and send Poole away free. Poole took the ball to the edge of the area and then rifled a shot inside the right post by a diving Howard to complete his hat-trick. Minutes later it was Oskarsson's mazy dribble that allowed Poole to break free of his marker and Oskarsson sent a nicely chipped pass to him. Poole took aim and then smashed the ball inside the far left post for his 4th goal of the match. Tottenham desperately tried to rally, but Orient had finally put the clamps on Postiga and that helped slow down their blazing offensive attack. Poole missed a chance at a 5th goal after Gareth Barry upended him in the area and Howard saved the resultant penalty kick. Orient's 4-2 win drew them even atop the EPL with Tottenham and the goal differential has them in the top spot with 5 matches to play (they have one in hand over Tottenham at present).

MOM- Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Leyton Orient

It was short rest for Orient as they jumped back into play with their midweek tilt at Brisbane Road- hosting Sparta Prague in the first leg of their Champions Cup Semifinal. It was apparent from the opening whistle that Orient was little affected by the short rest as they thoroughly dominated the visiting Czech side in handing them a 5-0 loss. The Orient advantage in pace saw them blanket the efforts of Sparta Prague to run a quick attack offense. Time and again it was Orient first to the ball and quick sharp passing saw Orient break down the Czech's efforts at containing the home side. Stephen Pearson's precision pass found Orri Freyr Oskarsson with a full stride on Lukas Zelenka and Oskarsson showed that was all he needed when he slipped the ball under a diving Martin Krivanek to give Orient the lead. Joey Barton's nice touch pass slid past Tomas Hubschman and found David Poole in the area. Poole made a quick move around the challenging Krivanek and snapped his shot into the open net to make it 2-0 Orient. It was 3-0 at halftime as Jan Evrard broke up a counterattack with a nice intervention and started Orient moving the other way. His quick pass was redirected by David Fox. Fox's good vision had found Oskarsson unmarked just outside the area and Oskarsson made a quick move into the area before blasting a 15 yard shot inside the right post past Krivanek for his 2nd goal of the match. Early in the second half, Pearson chipped in with a goal himself when he took the ball on a dribble and caught the Prague defense flat footed as he moved around four players on the left before firing a ball inside the far right post to cap a spectacular move. Wayne Rooney then capped off the scoring in the match. David Poole's blast got through Krivanek and Rooney outraced two Prague defenders to hook the ball into the net to make the final scoreline 5-0 Orient. In the other Semifinal, Rangers stunned Arsenal with a 4-1 thrashing at Ibrox to leave the Scot side looking good to make the Finals.

"Pretty impressive effort," commented Field.

"I thought we were as ready to play today as we have been for any match this season. This win, coupled with the win at White Hart Lane, leaves me hoping that we can just continue to roll through the final matches of the season," replied Drabek.

There was a large amount of booing after the announcement of Danny Coid as Man of the Match, as the Brisbane Road crowd clearly acknowledged that they thought Nicky Weaver was deserving of the honour. Weaver came up with a series of sensational saves in both halves and that combined with Orient's inability to hit the net with good shots left Orient in a frustrating draw after they held sway over the match. Orient outshot their visitors by a 13-1 margin, but between Weaver's performance and close misses from Orri Freyr Oskarsson, David Poole, Wayne Rooney and Danilo Arrieta- they were left splitting the points in the disappointing scoreless draw.

MOM- Wayne Rooney, Leyton Orient

The much anticipated return of Rooney turned out to be a celebration for Orient as Rooney's inspired play helped Orient to an important 4-2 road win. The pace was crackling from the opening whistle and Everton came close early as Jamie Donnelly nearly made his old mates pay, but hit the post behind Sebastien Frey. Orient grabbed the lead with a sizzling counterattack. Stephen Pearson ran down a ball just before the left sideline and then sent Rooney into space on the left side. David Poole ran away from his marker and Rooney made a spot-on pass that allowed Poole to half-volley past Richard Wright into the right side of the net. It was quickly 2-0 Orient when Pearson again chipped to Rooney in space on the left side. Rooney's cross went unclaimed though and Orri Freyr Oskarsson ran down the loose ball and snapped it past the sprawling Wright. Everton quickly hit back as Ben Watson's 25 yard blast deflected slightly off Joey Barton- and that was enough to catch Frey moving the wrong way as the ball bounced into the net. Orient improved the lead to 3-1 as David Poole outleaped Joseph Yobo for a cross from Pearson and his deflection caught Wright slightly off balance as he couldn't hang on and the ball trickled into the net for Poole's 2nd goal of the match. Everton got right back into the match early in the second half. Yakubu outleaped Rooney and headed the ball into Orient territory and Dean Bowditch outraced Ryan Garry, on for injured Titus Bramble, to the ball. Bowditch took advantage of Frey's hesitation on rushing out and struck a curling 25 blast past him into the right side of the net. It was Rooney's match though and David Poole nicely squared a ball off for him to cap the scoring in the match as he smashed a shot into the left side of the net past Wright to make the final score 4-2 Orient.

***

"That was nice of you to offer some comments about David (Poole) to the press," offered Field.

"He has earned it. He has worked hard to get back to where he was after the injury. He should have had a hat-trick again today, but that shot in the second half was just inches wide of the far post," stated Drabek.

MOM- Titus Bramble, Leyton Orient

Orient took advantage of a rare mistake by Leeds keeper Paul Robinson as they edged Leeds 2-1 in rough, bruising match. Leeds took the lead when they staged a terrific counterattack. John Ryan's clearing kick from the Leeds area found Leandro Bonfim past midfield. Leandro Bonfim showed exquisite touch as he moved the ball on and picked out Alan Smith as he moved past Titus Bramble. Smith then launched a laser shot past Sebastien Frey into the left side of the net for his 10th goal of the season. Orient evened things when Titus Bramble deflected a inswinging Matthew Etherington corner past Robinson. Orient threatened to take the lead in the first half, but Etherington's 30 yard free kick bounced back off the post and Wayne Rooney hit the outside of the post on another great chance. The physical play saw Orient sporting 4 yellow cards as the match moved into the second half. After both sides squandered early chances in the second half, Orient took the lead on a bad decision from Robinson. Danny Byrne lofted a pass down the right side and Robinson chose to come out of the area and along with defender Steven Venables challenged David Poole in the air. Poole timed his leap perfectly and just flicked the ball a short way to Steed Malbranque. Malbranque moved into the area and didn't miss the wide open net to score the match winning goal. Leeds came close to equalizing in the dying moments of second half injury time, but a timely block tackle from Jan Evrard blunted what looked like a great chance for Fabio Paim. Orient's win allowed them to hold on to 1st place with two matches remaining in EPL play.

Sparta Prague- None

Orient- None

MOM- James Hicks, Leyton Orient

Clearly content with a 5-0 margin in hand, Orient played a patient, ball control defensive match as they battled Sparta Prague to a scoreless draw. Neither side managed many chances- a total of 8 shots between both for the match, but young Orient keeper James Hicks earned both the MOM honours and clean sheet with a couple of stellar first half saves. Hicks tipped Lukas Zelenka's hard shot over the bar in the opening moments of the match and then made a smothering save against Thomas Jun in a one-on-one situation midway through the half. Orient's only good chance of the match saw Milan Baros- who had come on for a slightly injured Wayne Rooney- drill a shot off the outside of the near right post after a good pass from Jan Kristiansen had found him with room. Orient clearly was avoiding playing Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Danny Byrne and David Fox- all in danger of missing the Final had they earned a yellow card. Hicks was the surprise starter in net as Drabek displayed confidence in the young English phenom and he rewarded that confidence with a solid match. In the other Semifinal, Arsenal launched 35 shots at Dean Simpson in the Rangers net- but only 11 actually on net and they were beaten on a 4-2 aggregate after only scoring a 1-0 win for their efforts. Rangers and Orient will meet at Brondby to settle the Champions Cup title.
