Shooting Star- will try to look back at year end totals and give you some ideas on those...

Kieran- It has been (and continues to be) a lot of fun- especially because with the exception of Frey this club really has no world-class players.

Thanks both of you for following along and your comments...

5.5.10

FC Bayern (3) Leyton Orient (0) Champions Cup Semifinal 2nd leg (Leyton Orient advances on 5-3 aggregate)

Bayern- M.Forssel 19,45 Diego 30

Orient- None

MOM- Mikael Forssell, FC Bayern

Bayern made things interesting as they scored 3 first half goals to give their fans hope, but Orient steadied themselves on defense in the second half and held off Bayern on a 5-3 aggregate. The first half for Orient was disastrous. Playing without several players who couldn't afford another yellow card, Orient played with a lack of cohesiveness in the first half and Bayern was quick to take advantage. Titus Bramble made a bad choice of trying to control the ball inside the edge of the area after having battled Mikael Forssell for most of the way down the pitch- Forssell took the ball away from him and fired it by Sebastien Frey to right corner of the net. Both Bayern and their fans could sense there was still hope, while Orient still seemed a bit smug about their overall lead. It was certainly a less smug feeling when Diego swooped in and overpowered Jan Evrard to get a shot off. Frey blocked it, but Diego whisked the rebound into the net past Frey and it was 2-0. Orient clearly lacked offensive presence in the first half, with David Poole resting on the sidelines, and the doubts about Orient manager Drabek's lineup choices were fast and furious at halftime after Forssell scored his 2nd goal of the match when Lee Sims failed to stay back on a corner and Forssell took the ball all the way from midfield in before firing it past Frey into the upper left corner. Bayern fans were buzzing, only one more goal and it would really be a match! They never got the one more goal they needed. Orient steadied themselves at halftime and with both Stephen Pearson and Carl Laurie subbing back into the lineup- the defense became more fluid and consistent. Orient missed several chances to dash Bayern's hopes completely with an away goal. Stefan Moore missed three times in one on ones with Oliver Kahn and also shot over the net on a penalty kick after Tobias Rau tripped Pearson in the area. Danilo Arrieta was also close, but Kahn managed to smother his break. The desperation rose for Bayern as time wound down, but they just weren't getting any more good chances and Frey grabbed off the few they managed. Their last good chance saw Diego miss high from just outside the six yard box with a hurried shot. Orient conceded the 3-0 loss as they moved on to the Champions Cup Finals on their 5-3 advantage. In the finals they will face fellow upstart Dinamo Kiev, who advanced on away goals after battling PSV to a 2-2 draw in Eindhoven.

Lol you got thrashed 3-0 and still managed to go 5-3 on aggregate?!

Hahaha you must have strikers from Hell to manage that! Keep them coming mate!

Shooting Star- well Orri Freyr Oskarsson put up a 4-spot in the first leg (see a few posts up)- but forwards on this club are Oskarsson, David Poole, Stefan Moore, Johann Torhallsson and Danilo Arrieta (not playing Diablo tactic btw, just a counterattacking 442 style that is well suited to the speed on this club)

Bradford City (1) Leyton Orient (3)

Bradford- M.Aaritalo 43

Orient- S.Moore 23,63,87

MOM- Stefan Moore, Leyton Orient

The match would seem to have meant little to Orient, but it was easy to sense that there was a sense of purpose in their appearence at Valley Parade. It was the regulars starting and though they weren't as crisp as in other matches- they were working hard. All of that paid off in a 3-1 road win. Manager Drabek explained after the match that they had to get the 'taste' of that bad performance at Bayern out- and that meant playing hard. Stefan Moore gave Orient the lead as he put back a rebound past Alan Combe. The intial shot was a pretty play as Carl Laurie passed to Stephen Pearson, who moved it on to Moore. Moore volleyed the crisp pass and Combe made a terrific diving stop- only to see Moore slot the rebound past him. Bradford City evened the match just before halftime when Ben Muirhead outworked Matthew Etherington on the sideline and then scooted past Laurie who had been going the wrong way. Muirhead's sharp cross found Mika Aaritalo and he deflected it past Frey while Jan Evrard was shaking his head over not having kept as tight a mark on Aaritalo as he needed to. Isaac Okoronkwo's mistake cost Bradford City dearly. Under pressure from David Poole, Okoronkwo sent a backpass to Combe, not realizing that Stefan Moore was bursting down the pitch toward Combe. Moore reached the ball first and slid it past Combe for his 2nd goal of the match. Moore then finished off his hat-trick with the match clincher. Pearson sent a pass over Richard Brown and Moore took it on the run down the pitch. Combe came out, but Moore fired a 25 yard curving blast that went into the right side of the net to make the final 3-1.

Leyton Orient (5) Liverpool (0)

Orient- J.Donnelly 11,58 J.Torhallsson 14-P,40-P,83

Liverpool- None

MOM- Johann Torhallsson, Leyton Orient

Liverpool, which was already guaranteed a place in Division 1 play next season, seemed intent on physically taking out their poor performance on Orient in the final EPL match for both clubs. 10 yellow cards and 2 penalty kicks later, they may have won the battle- but they lost the match 5-0. Orient, which was playing with many regulars resting, took advantage of Liverpool's lack of focus. Jamie Donnelly headed a long pass over to Johann Torhallsson. Torhallsson quickly returned a beautiful cross that Donnelly half volleyed past Christopher Kirkland. David Raven then tripped Donnelly in the area to earn a penalty kick that Torhallsson converted. Anthony Le Tallec then tripped Danny Byrne when it looked certain he would score and Torhallsson converted that penalty kick for his 2nd goal of the match and a 3-0 halftime lead. Orient just kept pushing and Liverpool kept roughing in the second half. Bojan Djordjic threaded a pass by three Liverpool players to find Donnelly unattended on the far post for his 2nd goal of the match. Danny Byrne then sent a lightning quick cross that Torhallsson headed into the left side of the net for his hat-trick and his 15th of the season as Orient won 5-0.

"It is still hard to believe that Liverpool is going down to Division 1," commented Spencer Field.

"They have as much talent as any top club in the EPL, but something is seriously wrong with their overall chemistry. They don't play well together. I was really surprised that Michael Owen re-signed with them- after they were already assured of being relegated," replied Drabek.

Tottenham (5) Leyton Orient (6) FA Cup Final Extra Time

Tottenham- S.Petrov 2 F.Oliveira 29 L.King 49 H.Postiga 65,90

Orient- D.Poole 39 S.Pearson 43,96 T.Bramble 53,61 S.Moore 90

MOM- Stephen Pearson, Leyton Orient

It is hard to imagine a more improbable outcome for a Cup Final. Neither Tim Howard nor Sebastien Frey can be faulted for the outcome as they both played very well, but the match was a free wheeling display of offensive potential on both clubs. Tottenham got off to a flyer when they converted a scramble in front of the Orient net into a 20 yard blast from Stilian Petrov that threaded through Frey to put them in front in the opening moments. It was 2-0 Tottenham after Robbie Keane sliced through the Orient backline. Frey stopped his close in blast, but Filipe Oliveira was on hand to chip it over the sprawled Frey. The Orient rally began when Stephen Pearson intercepted a Howard goal kick and headed to Stefan Moore. Moore flicked it on to David Poole and Poole had enough room to slash a low shot past Howard. Orient evened at 2-2 for halftime when Carl Laurie zipped a pass that found Pearson with room to move in the area. Pearson slipped a shot past Howard into the lower right corner to equalize. Tottenham moved back in front early in the 2nd half when Ledley King scored his 1st goal of the season as he deflected a corner from Luis Boa Morte past Frey. Titus Bramble then offered a mirror replay when he scored his 1st goal of the season on a David Fox corner to make it 3-3. Shortly after it was Bramble again soaring high to deflect a Jan Kristiansen corner by Howard for a 4-3 Orient lead. That lead didn't last long either as Helder Postiga drove a 15 yard shot past Frey after Jan Evrard had misplayed a ball and let Helder Postiga reach it first. Both sides were out to try and win in regulation time. Tottenham supporters were in a frenzy when Helder Postiga knocked in a rebound after Frey had made a difficult save on a long swerving shot from Sean Davis. It looked like they had won the FA Cup in the last minute of regular time. With four minutes of injury time left- and without David Poole, who had left earlier due to a slight injury- it appeared very grim for Orient. The heart of the Orient club has never been in question- and won't be again. Danny Byrne, who everyone could see was extremely tired, fought hard for a loose ball and took it down the pitch. He timed his pass perfectly and Stefan Moore broke in on Howard. Howard came up with the save to the groans of the Orient fans, but the rebound bounced away from him. Moore picked it up and kept moving before firing it inside the left post by a diving Howard to score the dramatic equalizer that sent the match to Extra Time. In Extra Time, the match was decided by another corner. Jan Kristiansen hit an inswinging corner that Pearson timed his leap perfectly on and above Boa Morte he was able to deflect the ball past Howard. Orient went into a defensive shell- as they were really too tired to do much more offensively. Fortunately, Tottenham was in the same boat and only managed one more good chance- which Frey saved a rocket from Helder Postiga to help finally finish them and Orient had its treble with a 6-5 win for the FA Cup.

Also, with Liverpool being relegated next season and with Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard (is he staying too?) staying loyal to them and going down with them, are they still up for possible places in the England national squad?

Dinamo Kiev (0) Leyton Orient (3) Champions Cup Finals

Dinamo Kiev- None

Leyton Orient- D.Poole 20 O.Oskarsson 28 S.Moore 68

MOM- Stefan Moore, Leyton Orient

Orient came out intent on swarming and smothering the Dinamo Kiev midfield and they did just that the entire match. Orient got goals from all three of its big guns as they won convincingly 3-0 to send their fans into a raucous celebration. It was clear from the opening whistle that this was closer to the Orient team that other clubs have seen all season and not the one that barely edged Tottenham for the FA Cup. They put pressure on the Kiev backline early and only a couple good saves from Olexandr Shovkovskyi kept the match scoreless. Orient finally broke the ice when Stefan Moore flicked a pass from Titus Bramble across the net. David Poole shook free of Gregoriy Yarmash's coverage and volleyed the ball for an Orient lead. The biggest save of the match happened when Sebastien Frey stopped Diogo Rincon cold in a one-on-one situation moments later to keep the lead. Daniel Fredheim Holm made a left side run and slipped a pass into Stefan Moore. Moore laid the ball back to the edge of the area where Orri Freyr Oskarsson moved to get it, then wheeled around and let loose a 20 yard blast that Shovkovskyi couldn't react quickly enough to even come close to as Orient moved to halftime ahead 2-0. Moore put the match out of reach of Kiev in the second half when he blasted a low shot to the far right corner of the net after a good pass from Pearson had found with room to let the shot go. Orient then put the clamps on Kiev and closed out the Champions Cup title with a great defensive effort to give Frey his clean sheet.

Summer of Changes

Orient (and England) manager Will Drabek was relaxing with Assisant Spencer Field in the Brisbane Road offices.

"I just wanted to catch up with you on the last week Spencer. While you were on R&R in the Med (Drabek grinned at the sunburnt Field)- I have been working on the contract side of the club. We re-signed several players whose contracts expired in 2011 to new contracts."

"Who would those be?" asked Field

"So far- David Poole, Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Adam Roberts, Matthew Morris, Lee Sims, Titus Bramble, Carl Laurie, William Flood, Stephen Pearson, Robert Huth, Mark Harding and Ryan Garry all have contract extensions through 2013."

"I notice you haven't mentioned Stefan Moore?" asked Field.

"Unfortunately, no. He is still negotiating with us, but we don't seem to be in the same ballpark on wages right now. I will likely have to work on it next season. Also, I transfer listed several players that are expiring in 2011- we will just have to see on them."

"Who are on the list?"

"Danilo Arrieta, Jon Spector, Bojan Djordjic, Elliott Grandin and Alex Weckstrom. We have a whole slew of contracts expiring soon- including Darren Ambrose, Michael Stewart, Eric Addo and Jason Gavin- I don't plan on offering them new contracts since most of them want out anyways."

"Hazards of running a world-class club," stated Field teasingly.

"Pretty true on that Spencer. We have a lot of players that expect to be first-team, and aren't happy when they aren't."

Rooney Out of Cup

England will be missing one of their key players as they move to next week's World Cup in Spain. Wayne Rooney tore his groin in a practice session and though expected to be healed by training time for next season- it may be a close thing on his recovery, but he is out for this year's World Cup. Stefan Moore was called up to take his place on the Cup roster- despite still nursing minor injuries himself.

WORLD CUP

9.6.10

The first upset of the 2010 World Cup happened in the first match, as unheralded Kuwait shocked Germany for a 1-0 win. The lone goal of the match came at 55 minutes when forward Turki Al-Mulhim scored in his National debut. Germany outshot Kuwait 7-2 for the match and must be bitterly disappointed at the result. Angola came back and stunned Spain with a late goal to earn a 2-2 draw.

France (2) England (3) Valencia, Spain

France- S.Gouvou 38 P.Viera 71

England- D.Poole 10-P,32,89

MOM- David Poole, England

Even without his strike partner Wayne Rooney, David Poole proved he can deliver for England as his hat-trick helped England edge France 3-2 in the waning moments of a terrificly entertaining contest. England took the early lead in the match when William Gallas pushed Jerome Thomas (starting in place of Rooney) and Poole calmly converted the penalty kick past Mickael Landreau. David Beckham's hard work paid off when he managed to take the ball away from Mikael Silvestre on the right sideline and sent a pass into space for Poole. Poole managed to reach the ball before Sylvain Vistin and wasted no time in firing away. Landreau got his hand on the ball, but it trickled through his grasp and just inside the left post for Poole's 2nd of the match and a 2-0 England lead. France started their rally with a vengence as they completely took the flow of play away from England. Thierry Henry had his corner headed back out, but his ensuing cross was flicked on by Hatem Ben Arfa and it went to Sidney Gouvou. Gouvou, just beyond the edge of the area, had time to pick his spot before blasting a rising shot into the left side of the net past Richard Wright. France pressured England throughout the remainder of the first half and Wright had to be sharp to push a Nicolas Anelka blast around the post in the late portions. France continued the pressure to start the second half and England seemingly started to wilt- as they couldn't get the ball out of their end of the pitch. France made their vise pay off when they worked a superb passing sequence. The end result was Guillaume Petit chipping to Patrice Evra. Evra quickly blocked the ball to the middle where Patrik Viera was moving through unmarked. Viera took the ball inside the area and then struck a sailing shot that went past Wright into the upper left corner of the net to even the match at 2-2. England proved it had heart though. After failing to do anything constructively on offense, they sprung Michael Owen (subbed on for Joe Cole, with Thomas moving to leftwing) and he broke in free on Landreau. Landreau smothered his shot- leaving Owen despondantly shaking his head. Glen Johnson started the key play of the match with a long pass up the right side. Poole outleaped Jeremie Brechet and headed it back to Owen Hargreaves. Hargreaves, who had subbed on for injured David Fox, then caught Brechet in an indecisive moment and immediately sent the ball back to Poole who was beyond Brechet. Poole had time to line up and drive a low shot. Once again, Landreau got a hand on the ball, but it kept going past him and just rolled over the goalline before Silvestre could clear it for a hat-trick and a dramatic match winning goal. England kept France from any more chances in the remaining time to finish the 3-2 win. Egypt edged a stubborn Rwanda side 1-0 in the other Group B match.

Rwanda- None

MOM- David Poole, England

The outcome was never in serious doubt as England did not allow Rwanda a shot on goal for the match. England launched 23 shots and kept the play in the Rwandan end virtually the entire match. England's first goal was a patented Beckham highlight. Beckham launched a 45 yard shot that looked like a pass in to David Poole in the area and instead fooled both the defenders and keeper Damien Buchon as it sailed over Poole's head and into the left side of the net. Michael Owen and Jermaine Jenas both came close to adding to the total, but their shots bounced off the posts. Khaled Aghbo pushed Poole in the area and Poole converted the penalty kick that followed to give England a 2-0 halftime lead. Owen Hargreaves sent a long pass in for Poole. Poole flicked it on and found Owen with enough room to snap a shot past Buchon to make it 3-0 England. Stefan Moore, subbing on for Owen, then capped the scoring for the match as Jenas threaded a pass through to the six yard box and Moore was quickest to the ball and fired it inside the right post to make the final score 4-0. Unfortunately for Moore, he strained his groin on the play and will miss the rest of the tournament. In the other Group B match, Egypt managed to survive the French onslaught and held on for a scoreless draw. The draw means that England has qualified for the 2nd round and that France will be out of the tournament if Egypt at least draws against England.

"It wasn't much of a conversation," stated Drabek. "They want Orient to challenge for the EPL title again and they told me our transfer budget was 12 Million."

"That isn't that much- given how much they paid out in revenue at the end of the season," replied Field.

"Yes, true- but they are still upset at our record spending last season- never mind that most of that went to buy Frey- the player who made the difference. They are also still upset at our high weekly wage level- though they told me I was only a little above their adjusted amount now- not 120K over it like last season."

Egypt (1) England (1) Barcelona, Spain

Egypt- G.Haza 12

England- D.Poole 80-P

MOM- David Poole, England

England and Egypt squared off in a match heavily influenced by the hot, dry gale force winds blowing at Nou Camp. England was sporting a lineup designed to keep several players out of yellow card trouble (since 2nd round advancement was clinched) and this caused a certain amount of hesitation in their play. Egypt took advantage of the swirling winds when Wahleed Salah Abdel Latif's corner caught a gust and blew over the mob in front of the net- directly to Gamel Haza, who was posted on the far corner. Haza blistered a close-in shot that Chris Kirkland put a hand on- but couldn't keep out of the net. England had real difficulties adjusting to the weather conditions in the first half and had only one shot on goal. The second half was improved for England as they started establishing their passing and only some very good work by Abdel Wahed El Sayed in net was able to keep Egypt in the lead- as he stopped Michael Owen and David Thompson from close range. England finally scored the equalizer when Hossam Ghaly pushed David Poole from behind in the area. Poole converted the ensuing penalty kick to even the match at 1-1. England had a last chance to win it, but Abdel Latif saved Egypt's chance to move to the 2nd round when he turned an Owen blast around the post in extra time. The draw spelled doom for France, as they beat Rwanda 4-0 at Sevilla, but wound up on the outside looking in as Egypt claimed 2nd place in Group B.

In Group A play, the hosts- Spain- were knocked out of the tournament when Germany defeated them 1-0 at Bilbao to gain the 2nd spot in the Group. Kuwait continued their surprising play as they easily handled Angola 3-1 at Madrid to finish with three wins in Group play and the top spot. The win by Germany sets up and England-Germany 2nd round matchup.

WORLD CUP

23.6.10

It was a day of stunning upsets in Group C. Serbia & Montenegro forced their way into the 2nd round as they thumped Argentina 4-2 in Sevilla to knock them completely out of the tournament. The reason Argentina is out was because Iceland- led by a pair of Leyton Orient players, Johann Torhallsson and Orri Freyr Oskarsson- crushed Mexico 5-1 at Barcelona to win the Group. In Group D play it was slightly more predictable as Italy qualified with the top spot due to a 1-0 win over Iraq in Madrid. Peru played themselves into the 2nd round as they knocked out Australia with a 3-1 win over them at Valencia.

Blow To English Hopes

The news from the English training camp in Spain was very bad as key forward David Poole injured his groin and will require surgery. Poole is expected to miss the next four months- which will also affect Leyton Orient's chances as he will miss the start of the season. England- J.Cole 54

MOM- Jerome Thomas, England

Both sides gave a gritty determined effort, but it was a Joe Cole free kick that turned out to be the difference as England moves on to the World Cup Quarterfinals on their 1-0 win. England missed some excellent scoring chances in the first half, as Tim Wiese provided a sensational display of keeping in the German net. Jerome Thomas played a neat give and go with Joe Cole that put Cole in free on Wiese but he parried away the blast. The rebound went right to an unattended Michael Owen, but Wiese blocked away his shot also as England bid for the lead in the opening moments of the match. Thomas made a dandy move with the ball to give himself space to shoot, but missed over the net at 27 minutes. Joe Cole's 33rd minute free kick punched through the wall, but the deflection drifted agonizingly past the left post. Germany hadn't generated many chances going into the second half, but everyone knew that would change and it did in the opening moments as Richard Wright was forced to push a Miroslav Klose blast over the crossbar after Michael Ballack had laid the ball off for him nicely. England finally struck gold when Joe Cole hit a swerving 30 yard free kick that curled inside the left post past Wiese for the first goal of the match. England came close again at 63 minutes when Thomas ran past Thomas Lell and crossed to an open David Thompson on the far side of the net. Wiese got a hand to push the ball just outside of the near right post. The desperate Germans pressured the English backline and Kevin Kuranyi caught Rio Ferdinand leaning too much forward and sent Klose in free with a good pass. Wright managed to smother the low blast from Klose and leave him with his head in his hands. England came very close to clinching the match when Thomas made another run past Lell, but Wiese was able to leap and grab off his cross that was intended for the unmarked Owen on the other side of the net. The German pressured the leftside of the English defense, but Carl Laurie was there to blunt three attacking opportunities in a row as he used his speed to keep pushing the ball out of bounds. The final whistle blew and the English fans gave their club a rousing ovation for their effort in the close win.

Owen, Smith Out!

England continues to be plagued by injuries to their forwards as today Michael Owen had his cheek badly fractured in a freak training accident. Owen will be out at least two weeks and will miss the remainder of the World Cup- joining David Poole and Stefan Moore on the sidelines due to injury. Alan Smith suffered a gash on his leg and will also miss the next match- leaving England with Jerome Thomas as their only healthy forward. With both Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand suspended for the match- England will also have a meager bench.

29.6.10

In a cracker of a match, Scotland won the first match decided on penalties at this year's World Cup as they bested Ghana. Ghana had taken a 2-0 first half lead on goals from their prolific striker Baffour Gyan. Scotland fought back as James Graham netted one just before halftime and then scored the dramatic equalizer in second half injury time as Stephen Hughes fed him a perfect pass and he wheeled and fired it home for his 2nd of the match. Scotland took the lead in extra time when Ryan Wilkie scored, but Gyan finished his hat-trick to send the match to penalties. The African magic was gone though and when Constant Mantey missed wide to the left- Scotland had a place in the Quarterfinals. Brazil made their way in to the Quarterfinals as they defeated a stubborn Croatia side when Ronaldinho scored on a free kick in extra time for the only goal of the match. Croatia had been with only 10 men since Igor Tudor had been sent off in the opening moments of the second half.

Grandin Going, Gone

Last One Standing- Not!

England suffered another blow as their only health forward- Jerome Thomas- injured his foot and will miss the remainder of the tournament. Every one of the 5 forwards England had on their roster is now out with injury- David Poole, Stefan Moore (who himself was on the roster because of an injury to Wayne Rooney), Michael Owen, Alan Smith and now Thomas. This doesn't bode well for English chances against Peru in the Quarterfinals.

"I don't know Spencer, I just don't know. I have never seen a spate of injuries that cut down every available body. The only bodies we will have on our bench- other than both backup keepers- are Carl Laurie and Jonathan Woodgate. All I can say is that we will field a creative lineup against Peru and hope for the best," stated Drabek.

ENGLAND

2.7.10

Peru (0) England (1) World Cup Quarterfinal- Madrid, Spain

Peru- None

England- J.Jenas 120-P

MOM- Jermaine Jenas, England

Not much more can be said about the effort and the heart of England as they played with a patchwork lineup and still outplayed Peru in deservingly moving on to the Semifinals. The match appeared to be moving to penalties when England managed to earn a corner in injury time of Extra Time. David Beckham's sweeping corner was on its way for Wes Brown, but Brown was pushed down by Luis Guadalope and the referee immediately whistled for a penalty. Jermaine Jenas was England Manager Drabek's choice to take the penalty and he calmly drilled it into the right side of the net as keeper Erick Delgado guessed wrong and the English players mobbed Jenas. The final whistle was only seconds away and an improbable English side had managed to move on. With no healthy forwards, Drabek had gone with Joe Cole and David Fox up front. The midfield featured Owen Hargreaves, Jermaine Jenas, David Beckham (playing inside) and David Thompson. It wasn't revealed until after the match- but both Jenas and Beckham were playing hurt, as training accidents had left each of them with slight foot injuries. The only other players on the bench were Carl Laurie and Jonathan Woodgate- as Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard were suspended for the match. Despite the lineup, England carried the play to the Peruvians and allowed them only 3 shots on goal the entire match, while managing 15 themselves. The lack of finishing almost proved costly to England as Joe Cole had two one-on-one chances against Delgado in the opening moments of the first half- only to see the keeper have the better of him both times. Jenas was very close with several long shots as well- just skimming the bar with two of them. In extra time David Fox made a brilliant run and cross, but Delgado stretched full out to knock Joe Cole's header around the post. England's backline play was rock solid during the match as Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson did a fine job of pinching the sidelines and taking away the normal Peruvian wing attack.

Italy ended the improbable run of Kuwait when they scored the only goal of the match in extra time to win 1-0. Gianluca Zambrotta's quick cross was flicked on by Andrea Pirlo and Antonio Cassano was on the far edge of the net to head it home at 101 minutes for the Italian win at Sevilla.

In a stunning upset at Barcelona, the Holders of the cup- Brazil- were sent packing by Colombia in a crushing 3-1 loss. David Arturo Ferreira led off the scoring for Colombia, but his goal was quickly answered by Ronaldinho. That was the last answer Brazil had, as they seemed to lack the energy of the smaller South American side. Juan Pablo Angel and Luis Gabriel Rey scored goals that Brazil could not match and they now head home to the angry calls for manager Emerson Leao's head.

The other improbable portion of the storyline played out later in Madrid as Scotland made Stephen Hughes and Shaun Maloney's first half goals stand up as they held off favored Holland to win 2-1. The plot is more intriguing as now England and Scotland are matched up in the Semifinals.

Healing Up?

On the eve of the World Cup Semifinal, Alan Smith has declared himself ready to play. Smith, who just had the stitches out of the gash in his leg, says he is completely fit. England (3) Scotland (0) World Cup Semifinal- Barcelona

England- D.Thompson 14 A.Smith 27 J.Jenas 85

MOM- David Thompson, England

It was a match with all the pre-match hype you might expect when two ancient rivals meet each other. The sub-plots were many, most of which related to how healthy England was for the match. Both clubs had kept tight lips and refused to offer their opponent bait in the press, which left the press creating their own divisiveness for the match. Once the match started, the hype faded and Scotland witnessed a very determined English defensive effort. Scotland was not able to manage a shot on net for the match as the hustling, smothering English midfield and backline caused them all manner of problems. It was clear when Stefan Moore and Alan Smith, both still sporting slight limps, came out on the pitch- that England was prepared to sacrifice to earn a chance in the Finals. Jermaine Jenas caused the first goal of the match as he ripped a 30 yard blast that Allan McGregor made a good reaction save on. The rebound bounced out to the right and David Thompson was quickest to the ball as he made a quick move around the diving McGregor before slotting the ball into the net to give England an early lead. Stefan Moore's appearence in the match was brief- he only played until halftime, but he made an important contribution. Joe Cole sailed a splendid pass to Moore on the right side. Moore steadied and quickly crossed to the center. Alan Smith overpowered both Andy Webster and Kevin McNaughton and headed it past McGregor to move England on top 2-0. With the lead, England backed off their pressure and worked on controlling every inch of the midfield. Scotland had a difficult time making a pass as there always seemed an English player right on top of the ball. The match played out quickly as Scotland couldn't break out and England was content with possession and the occasional shot. Jermaine Jenas put the match out of reach when struck a wicked 25 yard blast that hit Webster's shin and changed direction to trickle into the left side of the goal as McGregor was caught moving the other direction before it deflected. England's 3-0 win sends them into the Finals against the winner of Italy and Colombia.

Italy- F.Miccoli 37,68 A.Cassano 100

England- D.Fox 17 M.Owen 88

MOM- Stefan Moore, England

It was a tremendous final, but in the end the English players were wearily taking the long walk back to the dressing room after losing on a silver goal to Italy. England started fine as David Fox deflected a David Thompson corner past Gianluigi Buffon to gain the early lead. The English backline, especially Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson had a very subpar match and it showed when Richard Wright was able to parry away Antonio Cassano's shots not once- but twice and still the English defense was standing around as Fabrizio Miccoli broke in and drove the ball past Wright. Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand were both lax in defending as Manuele Blasi ran onto a ball in space and had plenty of time to find unmarked Miccoli who drove it inside the right post to make it 2-1 Italy. England looked very tired but with Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard subbing on- tried to press the attack. Carl Laurie's long pass to Stefan Moore was perfect and he flicked it back to a moving and unmarked Owen. Owen lobbed a shot over the stranded Buffon and scored a dramatic equalizer for England. In the opening moments of extra time Moore made another superb flick on that left Owen all alone in front of Buffon. Owen drilled his shot, but it went over the crossbar as he hung his head in disbelief. Wes Brown and Ferdinand were both caught flat footed and out of position as Andrea Gasbarroni chipped a looping pass over them to Cassano. As Wright challenged, Cassano showed exquisite touch and lobbed the ball over him for what we would be the match winning goal. England could not break down the determined Italian backline play and was left rueing the missed chances in the 3-2 loss.

Orient Training Camp- August 2010

"It is going to be a difficult start to the season," commented Will Drabek to Assistant Manager Spencer Field. "With Poole out for another 2 months or so- we may have scoring problems up front."

Field shrugged, "I think you may be underrating the depth we have at forward. With Stefan Moore, Danilo Arrieta, Marco Borriello, Jamie Donnelly and even newcomer Davide Vanni- we might be fine."

"You're right- I may just be worrying too much. But Poole is still the heart and soul of this club and I will be happier when he returns."

"I am not disputing that- he is important to us- but I think we will be fine until he returns. All of our new summer additions look pretty comfortable already."

"Very true. Joey Barton (signed on Bosman) looks happy to finally be here- after almost arriving two seasons ago. David Mannix (purchased from Liverpool for 1.8 Million) should help us in the midfield- at least as soon as he is healthy again. Christopher Eagles (signed on Bosman from Manchester United) helps our depth on wing. Our young Italian Vanni (signed on Bosman from Milan- 20 yr old SC) is fitting in well- I think it helped that we already have Michele Marchese, Marco Borriello, Jan Kristiansen and Sebastien Frey here- all of whom he had met in Italy."

"I heard a lot of rumors about Frey lately?" stated Field questioningly.

"All false. I will not part with Sebastien and am going to attempt to keep him under contract for a long time here."

"We may miss Bojan Djordjic (sold for 1.5 Million to Newcastle)."

"I couldn't get him to sign a new contract and he was unhappy about playing time- it was time to move him."

"I don't think we will miss Elliot Grandin (sold to Sheffield Wednesday for 1 Million) or Francesco Coco (sold to Lazio for 200K) much."

"Neither do I. I was happy to move their contracts on to other clubs. The Board is even happy with me now- we are close to the target weekly wage for this season. That is why I am hesitant about adding any more contracts- at least until we move somebody else."

"Are we moving anyone else?"

"Well, the end of this season could be the exodus. We have a lot of players in the last year of their contract. Only Stefan Moore is really a key player out of those. I am trying to re-sign Moore, Jan Kristiansen, Daniel Carr, Ramon Calliste and Jamie Donnelly out of the ones that have contributed to the senior side. On the reserve/youth side- Lee Peacock, Andy Bridges and David Rowe are the ones I am trying to retain."

"What about Danilo Arrieta? Tommy Lee? Michael Carrick? Those are three pretty good players..."

"I am trying with Danilo- but I believe he wants much more than we are offering him and I can't go as high as he and his agent wants. Tommy Lee was an important component for us- but with Frey and James Hicks here and Daniel Carr's development- I am going to let him leave. Carrick has been hurt much of the time here and I believe Joey Barton will more than fill in for him. I am also planning on letting Richie Wellens, Curtis Woodhouse, Adrian Nevins, Simon Brown and Jon Spector leave after this season- if not sooner."

"You are right- that is quite a turnover. I am glad to see few changes in our backline."

"Our backline in underrated by every pundit out there. The press keep commenting that we should splash out and bring in Matt Hill. I like Hill a lot and Aston Villa keep offering him to us, but I won't give them the 11.5 Million they are asking- that would be practically our entire transfer budget."

"If contract negotiations don't go well with Arrieta- remember they were interested in him before. Maybe we could swap?"

"Good idea Spencer- something to keep in mind."

Orient Sells Lee

Leyton Orient today announced the transfer sale of keeper Tommy Lee to Blackburn for the reported purchase price of 750K. Orient- J.Donnelly 21,90

Manchester City- S.Heywood 4 L.Croft 70-P

MOM- Jamie Donnelly, Leyton Orient

Orient scored a dramatic equalizer to send the match to a penalty shoot-out, but then came up well short to lose the Community Shield match. Manchester City scored the first goal early in the match as Orient was caught pressing too far up the pitch and Steve Gordon sent Yakubu free into space on the left side. Orient closed down on him, but Yakubu's cross sailed right past Mark Harding and Stephen Heywood drove a header past Sebastien Frey into the left side of the net. Orient equalized when Christopher Eagles sent a long pass up for Danilo Arrieta. Arrieta headed the ball across to Jamie Donnelly. Kasper Schmeichel blocked his shot, but Donnelly's quickness got him to the ball first and he took it around Schmeichel for a tap-in goal. Schmeichel had a sensational match and stopped Arrieta close-in and then a blast by Adam Roberts from just outside the area to preserve the 1-1 score. Orient was their own worst enemy as Joey Barton capped a poor debut by tripping Gordon in the area. Lee Croft converted the penalty kick past Frey and Manchester City again held the lead. Orient tried desperately to rally, but Schmeichel batted away to potential eveners late in the second half. Just when it appeared Manchester City would be able to run out the clock, David Mannix sent a through ball that found Donnelly moving behind the Manchester City backline. Donnelly broke in and fired a hard, low shot- but Schmeichel got a hand on it. The ball trickled away toward the backline and Donnelly raced to reach it before Schmeichel could regain his position. Donnelly managed to get the ball just before the end line and fire a sharp angle shot by the diving Schmiechel for a dramatic equalizer. Orient failed miserably in the penalty shoot-out as none of their four shooters could convert and Manchester City edged them to take the Shield. After the match it was announced that Frey had been playing with a slightly pulled hamstring and would likely miss a week to recover.

Orient- J.Donnelly 19,76 D.Fredheim Holm 34

MOM- Daniel Fredheim Holm, Leyton Orient

Orient began their defense as holders of the EPL with an impressive road win over Leicester. Building on his strong performance in the Community Shield match, Jamie Donnelly took full advantage of gaining another start and put Orient in the lead in the first half. Stephen Pearson sent Daniel Fredheim Holm down the left side with a long pass and Fredheim Holm made a precision cross to pick out Donnelly on the far corner of the net. Donnelly stopped the ball and fired it into the right side of the net to give Orient the lead. The first half was punctuated by a lot of tough tackling as both sides battled for every loose ball. Danny Byrne was the architect of Orient's 2nd goal as he drove past an already yellow carded Alan Rogers and then crossed sharply for Fredheim Holm. Fredheim Holm's strong header went past Matt Murray into the left side of the net to put Orient ahead 2-0 at half. The lone goal of the second half is bound to be on this season's highlight reel. Fredheim Holm blocked a ball away and Donnelly picked it up well on the Orient side of the pitch. Donnelly began a scorching leftside run but the Leicester backline stayed between him and the goal. Donnelly broke in as he reached the area and zipped past Matt Heath before driving a shot past Murray just inside the far right post for a fantastic goal and certainly his finest in an Orient kit. The 3-0 result was pleasing to the Orient fans, but the rumors about Stefan Moore are swirling as he was expected to be in the starting lineup and then was suddenly pulled at the last moment by Manager Drabek and Johann Torhallsson started in his stead.

Orient Shocker!

The rumors about Leyton Orient forward Stefan Moore were apparently true, as Orient today announced the transfer sale of Moore to Chelsea for a reported fee package of over 10 Million. Moore, one the 'Three Amigos' Orient offense that propelled them to the EPL title and their historic quad, was in the last season of his contract and reportedly asked for much more than Orient could offer him. Manager Drabek commented, "Stefan is obviously one of the class forwards in England, but unfortunately football is also a business and we couldn't get a deal worked out to his satisfaction- so we had to make this move." The move also seems to underline the contract renewals Orient successfully negotiated with both Danilo Arrieta and Jamie Donnelly in the past couple weeks. Orient may splash some of the funds out before the transfer deadline as David Poole remains months away from returning from his summer injury.

Leyton Orient (2) Bolton (0)

Orient- J.Donnelly 14,50

Bolton- None

MOM- Jamie Donnelly, Leyton Orient

The parting of ways with Stefan Moore seems much easier when his replacement is leading the club to wins. That was the case again as Jamie Donnelly continued on his scoring rampage with his 3rd straight two goal match in leading Orient to a 2-0 win in its home opener against Bolton. Donnelly's electric pace caused the Bolton backline problems the entire match. Donnelly came close to scoring in the opening moments, but Jussi Jaaskelainen blocked his low shot away. Matthew Etherington showed superb touch when his lofted pass sailed over Nicky Hunt and Neil Gould directly to Donnelly in front. Jaaskelainen tried to slide out and smother it, but Donnelly calmly whisked the ball past him for his 5th goal of the season. In the early stages of the second half, Lee Sims sprayed a ball out to the right wing. Orri Freyr Oskarrsson flicked the ball on to Donnelly- who had again escaped his marker. Donnelly fired the ball inside the near, right post for his 2nd goal of the match. Orient kept the pressure up on the struggling visitors and only allowed them one real scoring chance- but Bobby Zamora missed wide to the right of the net as Sebastien Frey challenged him away from the net. Donnelly's performance may quiet the transfer rumors- with most available forwards being rumored to come to Orient. Because of the newly completed seating additions to Brisbane Road- the crowd of 19,888 broke the previous attendence record.

"Jamie's on a mission," observed Spencer Field.

Drabek grinned ruefully, "Well, rightfully so. Though we thought he had the talent- we hadn't given him a full chance. What I had seen from him in the friendlies made me comfortable enough to sell Moore- after he told us we weren't even in the ballpark for the wages he wanted. Jamie is proving to everyone how ready he is- I even added him to the England shortlist now as well."

"Are we pursuing anyone before the transfer deadline?"

"Yes. I still want to get veteran striker if possible. We need a bit more experience up front to handle the rigors of Europe and there were a couple on the transfer list that might help- and weren't too costly. We also have a bid on Michele Marchese that may or may not come off."

"I wouldn't mind seeing him go- he isn't working hard in practice and other players are noticing. I think he wants to be back in Italy."

"Parma is who we are talking to, so that might work out Ok. I am still not sure if the deal will go through or not."

Big EPL Signings

Two significant EPL transfer purchases were announced yesterday. Manchester United, seeking to help its already potent offense, completed the transfer purchase of Nicolas Anelka from Newcastle for 26.5 Million. Rumors aboud that Orient will complete the purchase of a forward from Italy- though which forward is only speculation at this point.

Manchester U- C.Ronaldo 86

Orient- O.Oskarsson 81

MOM- Stephen Pearson, Leyton Orient

In a battle between 1st place Manchester United and 2nd place Leyton Orient, it was an entertaining match that resulted in a 1-1 draw that was fair to both sides. Both Fabien Barthez and Sebastien Frey were very sharp in a duel between the two French National keepers. Frey made good first half saves on Sanli Tuncay, Ruud van Nistlerooy and Andrea Pirlo to keep the home side off the board. Barthez only had to make one good save in the first half as he blocked away a rocket by Stephen Pearson, but stopped Jamie Donnelly and Daniel Fredheim Holm early in the second half. Both sides were moving well up and down the pitch and Orri Freyr Oskarsson, subbing on for Danny Byrne, ignited the Orient offense. Pearson's hard work earned Orient the lead when he took the ball away from Andres D'Alessandro at midfield and then found Oskarsson motoring down the pitch unmarked. Pearson's lead pass allowed Oskarsson plenty of time to rifle a shot past Barthez into the far left side of the net. Manchester United's potent offense wasn't done. After keeping Cristian Ronaldo under check for most of the match, Carl Laurie let him slip away and a pretty passing sequence started by a flick on from Tuncay to van Nistlerooy and then a volleyed pass from van Nistlerooy allowed Ronaldo to take the ball around a diving Frey and score a dramatic equalizer that sent the Old Trafford fans into a frenzy. Orient had a golden chance to win the match when a superb pass from Pearson allowed Donnelly to cruise in alone on Barthez, but Barthez made the game saving stop on him and William Gallas hustled back to clear away the rebound before Donnelly could hook it into the net.

Orient Add Two

Leyton Orient today confirmed the myriad of rumors about their acquiring forwards in the wake of the sale of Stefan Moore and the continuing rehabilitation of David Poole. Orient announced that they had purchased transfer-listed veteran Czech striker Milan Baros from Middlesbrough for a reported 950K and also announced the 2.2 Million purchase of 24 yr old English forward John Turner from Tottenham. Baros has been a successful scorer for Middlesbrough in both EPL and Division 1 play, but was on the outs this season and had been stuck on their reserve side. Turner, a forward that Orient heavily scouted before Tottenham had purchased him from Sunderland, hadn't earned a place at Tottenham and was looking forward to a chance to play. In a quiet move, unhappy Orient forwards Ramon Calliste (who is in the last year of his contract) and Johann Torhallsson were placed on the transfer list and both are expected to be dressing with the reserve side for their next match.

***

"Not exactly the forwards I wanted, but they should do fine," stated Drabek.

"How close were we to landing Souleymane Youla? I know he was the top one on your list," offered Field.

"We were close, but Roma started jacking me around on the transfer price and I finally just told them they could keep him. I think they didn't want him here and able to play in our Super Cup match against his old side this week."

***

Holding up the fax, Spencer Field said, "Champions Cup Groupings just arrived."

"Which Group and who with?" asked Drabek succinctly.

"Group B. Dinamo Kiev, Celta and Levski Sofia."

"First time that we haven't had an Italian side in with us. I won't underrate any of those sides though."

Leyton Orient (3) Roma (1) Super Cup- Stade Louis II

Orient- D.Arrieta 46 D.Vanni 69,90

Roma- H.Ben Arfa 76

MOM- Danilo Arrieta, Leyton Orient

Orient put on a strong show in dumping Roma 3-1 for the Super Cup. What was even more impressive is that it was accomplished by what is considered Orient's 2nd unit of players- and they gave Roma all they could handle in this match. The first half featured flowing attacks up and down the pitch by both sides. Sebastien Frey was called on to make good saves on blasts from Antonio Cassano, Marco Di Vaio and Francesco Totti. Ivan Pelizzoli had to make some good stops of his own as he tipped a rising shot from Danilo Arrieta over the bar and stopped Marco Borriello twice on one-on-one situations. Orient jumped on Roma in the opening moments of the second half. Ryan Garry showed excellent vision as sent a scorching low pass by two defenders to find Arrieta unmarked at the six yard box. Pelizzoli parried away Arrieta's shot, but Arrieta beat Jonathan Zebina to the rebound and knocked it home to give Orient the lead. Christopher Eagles made a great pass to find Arrieta moving in space on the left (after switching sides with Davide Vanni- who subbed on for Borriello). Arrieta made a timely cross and Vanni's hard volley was parried by Pelizzoli. Again, Pelizzoli wasn't supported by his backline, as Vanni drove the rebound past him to score in his debut when he was quicker than Traianos Dellas to the ball. Roma put themselves back into the match when their backline was caught pressing forward. Di Vaio made a beautiful curving pass that found Hatem Ben Arfa alone on the left side and he made a nicely placed shot past Frey into the left side of the net when Frey challenged him in the one-on-one. Vanni had already missed two golden chances to put the match away for Orient in the late stages, but when David Mannix (subbed on for Michele Marchese) made an excellent touch pass to send him free in second half injury time- the third time was the charm as he blistered a shot into the right side of the net past Pelizzoli to clinch the 3-1 Super Cup win for Orient.

Orient- J.Donnelly 11,15,26

Aston Villa- None

MOM- Jamie Donnelly, Leyton Orient

Orient continued their winning ways and Jamie Donnelly continued his torrid scoring pace as his hat-trick was all Orient needed to defeat Aston Villa at Brisbane Road. Orient looked set to take the lead in the opening moments when Jonas Johansen pushed David Fox while he leaped to try and head a Daniel Fredheim Holm corner. Unfortunately, John Turner's debut was somewhat soured when he shot over the bar on the penalty kick. It wasn't long after when Donnelly took over the match. Turner made up for his miss with a sizzling cross that Donnelly had an easy time heading into the right side of the net for his 1st goal. Stephen Pearson found Turner with space again minutes later and again Turner showed good touch in his cross that Donnelly was able to volley past Robert Olejnik for his 2nd goal. Turner capped off his fine debut when after picking up a loose ball after a corner- his pass was nicely placed to allow Donnelly to run onto it and blast a low screamer into the far left side of the net to cap his hat-trick. Orient controlled most of the rest of the match, but wasn't able to get another goal against Olejnik and settled for the 3-0 win. The bad news for Orient was that they will lose another player to surgery. Danny Byrne tore his hamstring and will miss the next four months after surgery and recovery.

***

"Jamie Donnelly is on fire right now," asserted Field.

Drabek nodded, "Good thing too- I hope he can stay that way until Poole is ready to go. Then I will have some tough choices- but the kind of tough choices every manager has when he has good players and depth."

Field leaned against the wall, "Depth will be the key this season for sure- losing Byrne isn't going to help things much."

"Good thing Orri's broken wrist wasn't worse- he should only miss a week or so."

England- A.Lennon 83

MOM- David Fox, England

England passed an important test in Group 3 with their 1-0 win over Croatia in Poljud. Though they held sway over play for much of the match, England came close to losing when Jerko Leko's shot bounced back off the crossbar after he was sent in free against the flow of play late in the second half. England took advantage of their reprieve and David Fox's superb pass found Aaron Lennon (making his debut as he subbed on for David Thompson) and Lennon showed his fine scoring touch with a nicely placed shot past Stipe Pletikosa just inside the far left post. England's forwards had visibly drawn Manager Will Drabek's ire for their continual long shots. England failed to carry the play when they reached the Croatia area and many of Pletikosa's saves were of the easy variety. In other Group play Georgia edged Iceland 1-0 in Tbilisi on a last minute goal.

Orient- J.Donnelly 36

MOM- Carl Laurie, Leyton Orient

Orient had to battle a determined Wolves side at Molineaux and edged them 1-0 in a very close match. The lone goal of the match came when Michele Marchese showed good vision to flick on a long free kick. He found Jamie Donnelly moving into space on the right. Jody Craddock came over to try and cut Donnelly off on his dribble, but Donnelly moved past him and launched a wicked rising shot that caught the upper left corner of the net past keeper Conejo Perez. Donnelly had to leave with a deep thigh bruise shortly after, but should be fine in a few days. Donnelly's replacement, Danilo Arrieta came close to adding to the lead- but his hard shot rang back off the left post. Wolves had struggled offensively in the first half, but started playing with determination in the second half. As the time wound down they had three golden chance to even the match. Frederic Kanoute and Henri Camara both missed into the side netting past Sebastien Frey and Barry Ferguson's blast was pushed over the bar by Frey. The win demonstrated the solid play of the Orient backline again- despite missing Titus Bramble with an injury.

MOM- Sebastien Frey, Leyton Orient

In a fair result for two of the best sides in the EPL, Orient and Arsenal battled to a scoreless draw at Brisbane Road. Sebastien Frey earned his MOM honours as he was superb throughout the match. Frey had the more difficult tests, but Christopher Kirkland also came up with the big saves that he needed to make. Arsenal's attack was much more cohesive than Orient's in this match, as Mike Zonneveld plagued Orient's right side with his runs and crosses. Adriano was a dangerous presence, but Frey was able to snare his every shot. Thierry Henry was strangely ineffective in the match and that contributed to the draw. A uncharacteristically poor match from Orri Freyr Oskarsson helped short circuit the Orient offense as the Arsenal backline managed to keep him and Jamie Donnelly under wraps. It was clear that Orient missed David Poole in this type of match- his abilities to score the big goal is something Donnelly hasn't demonstrated yet.

MOM- David Fox, Leyton Orient

Orient squandered a chance at a win to begin their Group play in the first phase of Champions Cup competition and had to settle for a 3-3 draw at Vigo. Poor backline play and an less than stellar performance from Sebastien Frey allowed Celta to fight back from three one-goal deficits during the match. Titus Bramble celebrated his return from injury by scoring when he deflected a David Fox corner past Pablo Oscar Cavellero to give Orient the halftime lead. Celta didn't play well in the first half, but recovered nicely at halftime and Alexander Rondon evened the match when he ran onto a ball at the edge of the six yard box and fired it past Frey inside the far right post, after Bramble had completely missed heading a soft lob pass for Rondon by Peter Luccin. Orient moved back in front when Fox scored his 1st goal of the season on a sensational 25 yard shot into the right side of the net after a good flick on from Michele Marchese found him free beyond the area. Celta again equalized when Robert Huth (on for a tiring Bramble) and Jan Evrard both abandoned the front of the net- leaving Rondon and Pezzarossi alone in front of Frey- and David Albelda made them pay by chipping the ball past both of them for Rondon to have an easy time whisking the ball into the left side of the net for his 2nd goal of the match. Huth made up for his error when he returned the lead to Orient. On a Fox free kick, Huth outleaped two defenders to make a strong effort. Cavellero managed to parry his initial attempt, but Huth overpowered Cristiano Zanetti and fired the rebound past Cavallero for his 1st goal of the season. It wasn't enough though as Huth gave the goal back when he allowed Pezzarossi to walk in free on Frey after Jose Antonio Guerrero had caught the Orient backline scrambling after a free kick. Pezzarossi drilled a low shot into the right side of the net as Huth hung his head and Orient had to settle for the draw. Dinamo Kiev edged Levski Sofia 1-0 in Kiev in the other Group B match.

***

"I know it wasn't Sebastien Frey's best performance," stated Field, "but we left him stranded on both of those last goals."

"Despite the fact that I know he could have made the save on any of the three they scored, you're right- the backline blunders are what killed us today. I know Huth is a better defender than that- but those were both clearly mental mistakes on his part. At least we managed to earn a draw out of the match," replied Drabek.

The fans at The Valley thought they were going to see a much different match than what they saw- and left early from- as Orient crushed Charlton 8-0. Charlton had been struggling on defense this season, but had played much better in their last couple of matches and it was clear they expected Orient to be a bit cautious on the road. Instead, they witnessed an Orient offensive explosion as Orient pressured the ball all over the pitch and took full advantage of Charlton's problems. Orient's first goal came when Dean Kiely tried to punch away a Matthew Etherington corner. His problem was he punched it directly to Mark Harding and Harding fired it back through a crowd into the net before anyone could react for his 1st goal of the season. Charlton believed they could shut down Orri Freyr Oskarsson's midfield runs, but Oskarsson made them pay when he deftly moved the ball on to a fast moving Jamie Donnelly. Donnelly had no problem skipping the ball into the open right side of the net. It was Donnelly again moments later. Charlton seemed to revert to physical play when trailing and earned 7 yellow cards in the match. Robert Huth took a free kick as a result of Djimi Traore's and sent a laser pass to Stephen Pearson. Pearson moved the ball quickly to Donnelly and he barreled past Traore before precisely placing a shot off the inside of the far left post for his 2nd goal of the match. Orient's next goal was a comedy of errors. Joey Barton took the ball away from Matt Holland at midfield and drove down the center. Holland came back to knock the ball away from Barton, but Orri Freyr Oskarsson was quickly on it. Oskarsson fumbled his dribble and the ball rolled to Kiely, but he was unprepared for that and he only slightly deflected the ball as it rolled past him. Oskarsson was again on the ball with an empty net, but lost his concentration and missed the ball on his attempted kick and it kept rolling. Jonathan Fortune had given up on the ball when he saw Oskarsson, but now couldn't move quickly enough to reach the ball before Barton- who had kept running forward on the play- and Barton finally pushed the ball into the empty net for his 1st goal at Orient. The Charlton backline was clearly at fault on the next goal as well, when Robert Huth headed a clearing kick back into empty space in the middle. Donnelly used his blazing pace to swoop in and then he slid the ball under the diving Kiely for his hat-trick. Orient opened the second half at the same blazing pace as the first. Pearson blocked a pass forward and John Turner flicked it across to Donnelly just shy of midfield. Donnelly then took off on a blistering run to the left and as he reached the six yard box he sent a sharp cross. Oskarsson slipped past Hermann Hreidarsson and easily deflected it past Kiely to make it 6-0. Orient's next goal was another gift from the home side. Carl Laurie headed a throw-in to Turner. Turner quickly bumped the ball to Etherington. Etherington's curling cross was right to Kiely, but it slipped through his hands. The ball bounced right to Donnelly for a tap-in for his 4th goal of the match. Another Charlton mistake keyed the final goal of the match. Michael Wiessenberger's pass went right to Barton. Barton chipped the ball for Turner. Turner picked out Danny Thompson, making his debut as he subbed on for Oskarsson, and Thompson whistled a 20 yard blast past Kiely to score in his debut and finish out the 8-0 rout.

***

"Quite an explosion," said a smiling Field.

"Mostly due to their mistakes. I don't think I have seen a match where the opponent did more things wrong than this one. If we score the goals we deserved, we only win 3-0- but they really did hand us the match on a platter with their performance," observed Drabek.

The Orient offensive explosion in their last match did little to intimidate a determined Bradford City side. The motto of the visiting defense seemed to be 'If they can't shoot, they can't score' and they worked hard to make Orient's life in their zone a misery. The visitors found themselves behind early though as Matthias Franz made a superb through ball to find John Turner in the area. Alan Combe managed to parry Turner's initial shot, but Turner's rebound shot bounced in off the inside of the near left post for his 1st goal at Orient. Bradford played a tough match after that goal, but wasn't able to generate much offense of their own. The only good chance they had in the match came just before halftime when Freddy Indurley Grisales skimmed the bar with a close-in shot on Sebastien Frey. Bradford continued their effort in the second half, but it was obvious they were getting worn down in the late stages of the match as the Orient offense started generating some good opportunities. Orient clinched the match as Danilo Arrieta (who had subbed on for Turner) made a brilliant dribble- turning Will Haining not once, but twice on it- and then he centered a pass that David Fox headed inside the near left post to make it a 2-0 Orient win.

Dinamo Kiev- Alessandro 84

MOM- Daniel Fredheim Holm, Leyton Orient

In the highly anticipated match up between last season's Champions Cup Finalists, it was Orient winning out again over Dinamo Kiev in a close 2-1 contest. Orient was much sharper in the first half than their visitors and Andriy Shovkovskyi was called upon to make good saves against Milan Baros, Stephen Pearson and Orri Freyr Oskarsson in the early going. Orient broke through to gain the first half lead when they worked an exquisite passing sequence. On a free kick, Joey Barton picked up the ball as it was headed away and sent it back to Carl Laurie. Laurie zipped a pass in to Marco Borriello in traffic. Boriello deftly moved the ball off to Daniel Freidheim Holm. Holm made one quick, short move with the ball before firing it past Shovkoskyi inside the far right post. Laurie also keyed the 2nd Orient goal when his pass down the left side just beyond Sergiy Federov and to a speeding Danilo Arrieta. Arrieta made a move deep in the area and then picked the perfect moment to cross to the middle. Milan Baros timing was impeccable as he broke away from his marker to head the ball past Shovkovskyi for his 1st goal at Orient. Dinamo Kiev made the late moments interesting when Andriy Nesmachnyi blistered a free kick that Alessandro was able to deflect past Sebastien Frey to make it 2-1. Orient kept the lead with a smothering defensive effort that kept sending Dinamo Kiev chances back to midfield in the last moments as they won 2-1. Levski Sofia beat Celta 1-0 on a second half goal in Sofia in the other Group B match.

MOM- Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Leyton Orient

Struggling Coventry could not have had a worse time to meet Orient- as the Orient offense is seemingly hitting on all cylinders despite the continued absence of David Poole. Coventry made a point to keep Jamie Donnelly under tight wrap in the match, but it did them little good as Orri Freyr Oskarsson found plenty of room to roam and led Orient to a 4-0 win. Donnelly's vision helped Orient score early when he made a good decision as defenders collapsed on him and he skimmed the ball to an unmarked Oskarsson. Oskarsson made a quick move in the area before crushing a 15 yard blast past Owain Fon Williams into the right side of the net. Coventry refused to fold and battled Orient hard the remainder of the half, but despite defending well never really generated any offense against the home side. Orient began to find the cracks in the defense in the second half. Matthew Etherington sprayed a ball out to Davide Vanni and Vanni made a looping centering pass. Oskarsson challenged and outleaped Fon Williams as he knocked it into the net for his 2nd goal of the match. Orient made it 3-0 when Fon Williams leaped and punched away a Jan Kristiansen corner- only to see Mark Harding make a superb volley into the left side of the net from outside the edge of the area. Kristiansen then added the finishing touch on the win. Danilo Arrieta made a nice volley pass off a Matthew Etherington free kick and Kristiansen boomed a shot that trickled through Fon Williams for his 1st goal of the season to finish off the 4-0 win.

England- W.Rooney 21,59,76,82

MOM- Wayne Rooney, England

England easily rolled past Georgia 4-0 in front of a packed house at Wembley as Wayne Rooney stole the show with an impressive 4-goal outburst. Rooney's presence up front was something the Georgia backline had no ability to handle in this match as time and again he overpowered them. His first goal came when strike partner Stefan Moore flicked a Joe Cole pass over to him and he snapped it past Giorgi Lomaia into the left side of the net. The match stayed close until the second half as Georgia worked hard in their end and Lomaia settled down to make some excellent saves. Rooney struck for his 2nd goal when Aaron Lennon passed the ball directly to him on a free kick and he hit a beautiful curving 25 yarder that just went inside the right post. A very pretty passing sequence gave Rooney his hat-trick. David Fox hit Rooney on the run, but he immediately chipped it over to a breaking Michael Owen (subbed on for slightly injured Moore). Owen was challenged by Lomaia and defenders and unselfishly crossed back to Rooney who had an easy time pushing it into the open left side of the net. Fox, Owen and Rooney worked the same combination for Rooney's 4th goal as a good pass from Fox sprung Owen and then Rooney escaped marking to head Owen's cross into the right side of the net to finish off the 4-0 win to a standing ovation from the sellout crowd. In other Group action Iceland managed to edge a determined Faroe Islands side 1-0 in Rejkyavik.

Faroe Islands- None

England- L.Croft 24 N.Ellington 53

MOM- Nathan Ellington, England

England thoroughly outclassed Faroe Islands at Torshavn, but came away with only a 2-0 win due to indifferent finishing and good work by Faroe keeper Jan Jacobsen. The press wanted much more from this match, especially after the resounding win over Georgia, but in defense of England the squad featured the International debuts of forwards Nathan Ellington and Dean Ashton and the return to International play by Kieron Dyer after a long absence from the side and they weren't as crisp as against Georgia. Despite the small margin of the win, there was no doubt England was in control from the opening whistle as they didn't allow Faroe a shot on Chris Kirkland for the match. Lee Croft finally gave England the lead after a number of both missed chances and good saves by Jacobsen in the early going. Jermaine Jenas grabbed off a loose ball after a scramble in front of the Faroe net and slipped it back to Lee Croft. Croft's blistering 25 yard shot for his 1st International goal was by Jacobsen before he could react, as he could not see the actual shot. After Nathan Ellington had missed close twice in the first half, he finally scored in his debut. Matt Hill, also making his 1st Cap, took a throw-in and sent it to Wayne Rooney. Rooney, who moved to the left wing in the 2nd half when Ashton subbed on, sent a rocket pass to Ellington. Ellington did a great job flagging down the pass and wheeled and fired past Jacobsen to score in his debut. England's luck was bad in the late stages as both Ashton and Carl Laurie drilled shots off the posts. The 2-0 win keeps England atop Group 3 as Georgia handed Croatia a discouraging 4-1 loss at Tblisi.

Orient- M.Harding 45 D.Thompson 77

MOM- Sebastien Frey, Leyton Orient

The fans leaving St.James Park could be heard clearly muttering about their fate as Newcastle had outplayed Orient in the match but had lost 2-0 thanks to the exceptional play of Sebastien Frey and Orient taking better advantage of scoring chances. The first half was almost all Newcastle as Orient could not get much going against the home side. Newcastle was quicker to every loose ball and their passing was crisp. The only problem they had was they couldn't find a way to score against Frey. Aruna missed over the net when it looked like a certain goal early on and Patrick Paauwe hit the outside of the post from just beyond the area. It looked certain that Newcastle would take the lead when Mark Harding was warned for tripping Yldiriy Basturk in the area. Michael Chopra was incredulous when Frey dove and batted back his scorching shot. Aruna was first to the rebound, but again missed over the net when he should have scored. Orient took advantage of a corner in first half injury time to score when Harding deflected the ball into the right side of the net on a looping corner from Daniel Fredheim Holm. Newcastle tried to resume their pressure in the second half, but Orient had made adjustments and now the flow of play was evenly distributed with both sides seeking the next goal. It was Jamie Donnelly's pace that set it up for Orient. Donnelly outraced Jonathan Woodgate down the right side and broke in clean. Shay Given parried his hard shot, but Danny Thompson- making his first start on the senior side- swooped in and whisked the rebound into the net to give Orient its final 2-0 margin. Newcastle outshot Orient 15-5 for the match and certainly felt deserving of a better fate.

***

"When he's on like that- Sebastien Frey is just amazing!" exclaimed Field.

"That is why we got him Spencer. That is also why he is under contract with us through 2014 and I will absolutely not listen to any offers on him. There is no way we should have won this match today, but Frey won it for us. Those two saves he made to preserve the 2-0 lead at 85 minutes were just as important as the penalty he saved," replied Drabek. "Just look at the table- we have played 10 EPL matches and Frey and Hicks have only yielded 1 goal. That is why we are in first despite how well Tottenham is playing."

***

Drabek set the cell phone down, "Good news Spencer!"

Field looked up from the scouting report, "What's that?"

"That was the physician treating David Poole. His hip is healed up and he thinks he should begin regular practice again. He advised to bring him along slowly, but thinks the hip is fully healed now."

Smiling broadly, Field nodded and replied, "That will be a boost to the entire club. Now you need to think about how to fit all these forwards we have into one big mix- it isn't going to be easy."

"Best kind of problem to have," grinned Drabek back.

Levski Sofia- None

Orient- M.Borriello 5 M.Baros 15

MOM- Milan Baros, Leyton Orient

Orient took an important step in their Champions Cup Group B when they beat Levski Sofia 2-0 in Sofia. It was the hard work of the forward combination of Milan Baros and Marco Borriello that keyed the win. After a through ball to Baros from David Fox was just knocked away, Borriello fought off defender Anton Vergilov to take control of the loose ball. Borriello then broke in clean and drove a swerving shot past keeper Georgi Shterev for his 1st goal of the season. Baros then showed his talent as a sniper when he ran onto a long pass from Titus Bramble and blasted a shot that got through Shterev to put Orient ahead 2-0. Orient wouldn't get another goal in the match, but they also maintained control of the midfield in easily ensuring that Sebastien Frey would put another clean sheet on his record. Dinamo Kiev moved solidly into 2nd place in the Group with a 3-0 thumping of Celta in Kiev.

***

"Think the knowledge of Poole's imminent return is spurring them to new heights?" asked a smiling Field.

"I can't doubt that all of them want playing time- even Danny Thompson, who hasn't earned it yet- so yes, I guess that will encourage a lot of hard work from all of them," replied Drabek.

MOM- John Turner, Leyton Orient

6th place Southampton clearly wasn't intimidated by the partisan crowd at Brisbane Road. Nor were they successful at slowing down Orient's momentum as the home side downed them 4-1 in a rousing match. Orient capitalized on an early free kick when Jamie Donnelly's free kick went past the crowd in front of Robert Green, but skidded to a stop on the soaked pitch. Jan Evrard was alert and reached the ball first, sending a centering pass back to right side of the net. Joey Barton was in the right spot for an easy half volley into the open right side of the net to give Orient a lead in the opening moments. Robert Huth intercepted a long kick to the middle and headed it down for Barton. Barton's excellent through ball found John Turner in a seam between the Southampton backline and before they could close him down he skimmed a low shot past Green. Orient moved ahead 3-0 when Turner showed good vision by flicking on a long pass from Barton to an unmarked Orri Freyr Oskarsson. Oskarsson showed his lethal shooting again when he fired a 20 yard blast past Green inside the right post for his 5th goal of the season. Southampton gained a little life for halftime when they scored the 2nd league goal scored on Sebastien Frey all season. Green's goal kick was flicked on by Tom Thorpe. Robin van Persie did an excellent job running onto the ball and then splitting Huth and Lee Sims before faking Frey off his feet and taking it around him to make the score 3-1. Barton showed his fine passing as he threaded a ball through to unmarked Turner. Green made a good stop on his initial shot, but Turner nailed the rebound inside the far right post for his 2nd goal of the match. Southampton had no quit in them and attacked the rest of the second half, but the Orient backline continually frustrated their good scoring chances and Frey would allow no more goals as Orient closed out the 4-1 home win.

Orient- D.Arrieta 10,60 D.Mannix 27 M.Marchese 52-P

Blackburn- K.Ryan 21 G.Pazzini 23

MOM- Danilo Arrieta, Leyton Orient

Orient managed to shrug off a pair of goals from Blackburn in a three minute span to take the lead and rallied for a 4-2 win in League Cup competition. It was an interesting match up of keepers as Tommy Lee, Orient's ex-Number 1 keeper, has taken over that role at Blackburn. Starting on the other side was youngster Daniel Carr- making his first start of the season as Orient's number 3 keeper. Orient leaped into the lead. Michele Marchese found Milan Baros in traffic, but Baros made space and blasted a shot that Lee blocked away. Danilo Arrieta was waiting as the rebound bounced to him and he easily slotted it into the net. Blackburn roared right back. Robert Huth pushed Jami Puustinen resulting in a free kick in the center of the goal just beyond the edge of the area. Lucas Neill smashed a curving blast that Carr managed to get fingertips on and it bounced back off the post. Kevin Ryan was waiting just beyond the edge of the area and when the ball bounced back, he blasted it into the right side of the net before Carr could even recover for his 1st goal at Blackburn. Nils-Erik Johansson keyed Blackburn into the lead when he made a strong header on a weak Carr goal kick. His header went to Giampaolo Pazzini who demonstrated to their Brisbane Road crowd why he is turning into one of the most feared strikers in EPL play (and last month's Player of the Month) as he took the ball past Robert Huth on the dribble and then threaded a shot inside the left post past Carr. Orient rallied to even the match shortly after when David Mannix managed to shrug off the marking efforts of Mark Vaughan and accept a pass from Huth. Mannix blasted a rising shot that Lee couldn't push over the crossbar and it was 2-2 at half. Orient took control of the match early in the second half. Arrieta beat Blackburn's offside trap and was in clean on Lee, but Lee managed to make the parry. As Arrieta tried to run down the rebound, Martin Taylor grabbed him and threw him off balance, which earned him a yellow card and a penalty kick for Orient. Michele Marchese calmly converted the penalty kick for his 1st goal of the season and a 3-2 Orient lead. One of the reasons why Lee was replaced as Orient's number 1 keeper was his propensity to give up rebounds. That paid off for Orient when Lee could not hold Baros' hard shot and Arrieta was able to sweep his 2nd rebound into the net for his 2nd goal of the match. With the 4-2 lead, Orient was content to force Blackburn to carry the play and though they had plenty of possession there was a dearth of good chances as the Orient backline ably supported Carr the rest of the way to finish out the 4-2 win.

Chelsea (1) Leyton Orient (1)

Chelsea- A.Gilardino 84

Orient- J.Turner 76

MOM- John Terry, Chelsea

It was the weekend matchups of the top 4 clubs in the EPL. Tottenham thumped Arsenal 3-1 and Chelsea and Orient battled to a 1-1 draw which left Orient and Tottenham even at the top and Arsenal dropping a point behind Millwall which surged into 3rd, while Chelsea dropped to 5th. Chelsea deserved to win a match they dominated for large stretches, but Orient almost took home the 3 points before Chelsea salvaged a draw. The emotional return to the lineup by David Poole didn't seem to help Orient at all, as their offense looked out of sync for most of the match. This match highlighted the lack of Danny Byrne as he and Poole seemed to have some kind of innate knowledge of where each other is and Orri Freyr Oskarsson and Jamie Donnelly failed to spark much from the right side today. Poole had a couple of good chances to score in his return, but Marcos saved both his hard blast after he intercepted a poor goal kick and also the strong header he made on a cross from Daniel Freidheim Holm. John Turner put Orient ahead as they managed a rare attack midway through the second half and earned a free kick. Djibril Cisse made a poor choice and headed a free kick by Fredheim Holm forward out of the six yard box. Poole outleaped Simone Padoin and headed to Turner. Turner whistled a shot past Marcos into the left side of the net. Orient tried to stave off the furious Chelsea rally but Albert Gilardino made a brilliant volley of a Wayne Bridge free kick and it eluded Sebastien Frey's dive to stretch the twine in a dramatic equalizer. Orient missed a great chance for the win when Stephen Pearson's through ball sent Turner in alone, but he missed over the net in the waning moments as the two tired clubs settled for the 1-1 draw.

MOM- David Poole, Leyton Orient

Orient's David Poole proved he was back in a big way as his 5-goal performance led Orient to an easy 8-0 rout of visiting Levski Sofia in Champions Cup Group action. The Levski Sofia backline had problems all day and an early miscommunication allowed Milan Baros to take the ball away and make a short cross to Poole. Poole made a quick move past his off balance defender and fired a shot inside the far left post past Georgi Shterev. Baros caused continual problems for the visitors before leaving with an injury early in the second half, and it was another take-away that set up Orient's 2nd goal. Baros took the ball from Aleksandar Tunchev and broke down the left. He crossed to the right and both Poole and Daniel Fredheim Holm were in position, but Poole let the ball go through to Fredheim Holm for an easy tap-in to the right side of the net. Lee Sims superb through ball allowed Poole to split two defenders and take the ball past Shterev before scoring his 2nd goal of the match. An innocent throw-in from Stephen Pearson allowed Matthew Etherington to chip the ball toward the near left corner of the net. Poole had again slipped his coverage and snapped a low shot past Shterev for his hat-trick. Carl Laurie sent the ball into space down the left side and Baros sent a centering pass looping into the middle. Poole outleaped two defenders and made a strong header for his 4th goal of the match and a 5-0 Orient halftime lead as the Brisbane Road faithful buzzed about the 'real' return of David Poole. Poole contributed on the next goal as he took the ball deep and then made a nice cross to Danilo Arrieta. Arrieta's shot was parried by Shterev, but Georgi Malinov mishandled the rebound right into the net for an own-goal. Orri Freyr Oskarsson's (on for David Fox) nice pass sent Fredheim Holm away on the right and he broke in with a sharp shot. Shterev blocked away the shot, but Arrieta pounced on the rebound and pushed it into the net for his goal. Poole capped his sensational match by easily slotting the ball into the open right side of the net after Arrieta took it away from Vladimir Andonov and broke away clean on the left, before sending a pass to the unmarked Poole. The sellout Brisbane Road crowd gave the club a standing ovation as they went to the dressing room with the 8-0 win. The win combined with Dinamo Kiev's 2-0 win at Vigo over Celta, clinched Orient a place in the 2nd phase of Champions Cup competition.

"David is back," smiled Field.

"Very nice sight to see. I almost didn't play him today, because he seemed tired in the Chelsea match- but I thought this match might help him get back into full playing fitness. It looks like it did," grinned Drabek.
