Leyton Orient (2) Millwall (0)

Orient- D.Byrne 5 J.Torhallsson 25-P

Millwall- None

MOM- Danny Byrne, Leyton Orient

Orient had to take care of business as they hosted Millwall with an eye toward their midweek trip to Milan for the 1st leg of the Champions Cup Quarterfinal. They did just that in a workmanlike performance, riding two first half goals to a steady win over the visitors. Orient struck early for the first goal of the match. It came when a long looping pass into space was run down by Johann Torhallsson. Torhallsson broke in on the left side, then unselfishly crossed and found Danny Byrne alone. Byrne made a dazzling move with the ball, leaving Millwall keeper Kevin Clark flat footed, as he took the ball around him for an easy goal. Orient made it 2-0 when Eric Addo was pushed in the air while trying to leap for a Matthew Etherington corner. Johann Torhallsson converted the penalty kick past Clark for his 5th goal of the season and Orient was comfortably ahead. Playing with the lead and confidence, Orient allowed Millwall little room to get decent scoring chances. The closest the visitors came was when Tommy Smith broke clear to run on to a long ball. Titus Bramble never gave up on the play and ran him down- making a superb saving tackle from behind and Orient kept their clean sheet in the 2-0 win.

Milan (2) Leyton Orient (2) Champions Cup Quarterfinal leg 1

Milan- J.Riquelme 12 R.Oliveira 66

Orient- D.Poole 83 S.Moore 84

MOM- Stefan Moore, Leyton Orient

Orient played a poor first half, saw Dida make some exceptional saves, gave away a second half goal and still rallied to earn a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Champions Cup Quarterfinal. Orient found themselves behind early when Juan Roman Riquelme made a surgical 30 yard shot that just caught the inside of the right post. Milan continued to hold sway over the first half play as they had several other good chances, but weren't able to capitalize on them. Orient started the second half and sprung Stefan Moore right away, but Dida made a fantastic diving save to leave Moore talking to himself. Dida was also sharp when his reactions allowed him to parry away a strong header from Titus Bramble on a Matthew Etherington corner. Orient gave away the second goal when Mark Harding, who had come on for injured Eric Addo, tried to give the ball to Tommy Lee, but instead put it past him in the six yard box. First to the loose ball was Ricardo Oliveira and his sliding kick pushed the ball into the net to knock Orient on their backheels. There was no quit for Orient though and they were suddenly right back in the match when Danny Byrne's through ball went past Alessandro Nesta and Poole wasted little time firing a midlevel shot into the right side of the net. It was Orient's turn to stun Milan as Orri Freyr Oskarsson then made a beautiful touch pass that found Moore with space in the area. This time Moore crunched a low shot that Dida was able to get only a piece of and it trickled into the net for a dramatic equalizer. Orient almost stole a win when Byrne got a chance in the area, but Dida was able to parry his rising shot away and preserve the 2-2 draw.

"The boys proved they have the heart and desire," said Field as he shook his head.

"If only we hadn't just handed them that 2nd goal," ruefully commented Drabek. "Still, to get back to even- with 2 away goals on the books- that was quite an effort. Now if we can play better from the opening whistle..."

England (3) Bulgaria (0) World Cup Qualifying Group 4

England- D.Poole 20 A.Cole 59 W.Rooney 67

Bulgaria- None

MOM- Ashley Cole, England

England found the Bulgarian defense hard to crack, but the Bulgarian keeper was less stingy as they cemented their 3-0 win with a pair of unusual 2nd half goals. England's quick passing attack was going well early on and the Bulgarians were having fits trying to maintain coverage. England took full advantage when Steven Gerrard's through ball went by Iliyan Stoyanov and allowed David Poole space. Poole struck a crisp 20 yard shot past Dimitar Ivankov and England was off with a 1-0 lead. In the second half, as Bulgaria had settled down and was frustrating England's attempts to attack, Ashley Cole contributed one goal that will inevitably make its way to the highlight reels- for comic relief if nothing else. Richard Wright had sent a quick goal kick out to Cole on the wing and he didn't stop the ball. Instead he half-volleyed it from 20 yards behind the midfield line, obviously intending to try and catch Wayne Rooney streaking down the pitch. Ivankov stated after the match that he had completely lost sight of the ball just before Cole sent it forward. He never reacted as Cole's long pass landed behind him and bounced into the net for a stunning 2nd goal. England then made sure the match was put away as Joe Cole's chip pass found Rooney with enough room to boom a 25 yard kick that Ivankov couldn't hang on to and it went through him and into the net. It was the first loss in Group play for the Bulgarians and now Bulgaria, Wales, Russia and England are all within two points of each other in the Group.

Russia (1) England (1)

Russia- A.Kherzhakov 70

England- W.Rooney 45

MOM- Ruslan Nigmatullin, Russia

It was a frustrated English squad that boarded the flight for home after thoroughly outplaying the home side but having to settle for a 1-1 draw. England was not even close to as sharp as they were against Bulgaria and they wasted numerous chances in the area due to bad passes. They outshot the home side 17-8 for the match, but Ruslan Nigmatullin provided some timely acrobatics in holding England at bay. David Poole set up England's lone goal, when he took the ball at the baseline and gave Wayne Rooney a perfectly timed pass. Rooney's half volley went past Nigmatullin into the right side of the net, giving England a 1-0 halftime lead. Despite not having many good chances, the Russians played a pretty 1-2 passing sequence for the equalizer. Alexandr Kherzhakov started it with a crisp pass to Dmitry Khokhlov. Khokhlov then tapped it back to Kherzhakov whose pace allowed him to turn past Sol Campbell. Kherzhakov made a precision shot past Richard Wright inside the far left post to even the score at 1-1. England pushed hard to gain the win, as the Russians retreated into a more defensive alignment, but Nigmatullin had the final say as he made a dazzling save on Michael Owen in the waning moments to leave Owen frustrated and kicking the pitch at missing the great chance. Bulgaria and Wales battled to a scoreless draw in the other important Group match.

Orient- None

Tottenham- None

MOM- Lee Sims, Leyton Orient

Playing without several players resting up for their 2nd leg against Milan, Orient was still able to control the match against 3rd place Tottenham. Poor finishing was the culprit as they were only able to gain a scoreless draw, despite outshooting the visitors by a 12-3 margin. Marco Borriello was the most unfortunate Orient, as he missed over the net on two golden chances- one in each half. Orri Freyr Oskarsson was closely marked by Tottenham, who dealt with an Orient lineup missing David Poole, Stephen Pearson, Matthew Etherington and Danny Byrne. Tottenham only had one good scoring chance in the match, but Tommy Lee was able to parry away Robbie Keane's low blast.

Leyton Orient (0) Milan (1) Champions Cup Quarterfinal 2nd leg (Milan advances on 3-2 aggregate)

Orient- None

Milan- Kaka 58

MOM- Alessandro Nesta, Milan

Orient's chance to advance further in Champions Cup was doomed early in the match and indeed now their pursuit of the EPL title is in jeopardy after David Poole was stretchered off in the opening moments of the match with a badly broken leg. Poole should be able to return for the beginning of next season, but is facing at least 4 months of healing and rehabilitation. The entire Brisbane Road crowd was hushed as they carted Poole off- but he did leave to a roaring ovation, as all watching sensed how bad the injury was. The injury seemed to take the heart out of Orient, and though they put forth a workmanlike effort- the spark of their offense sputtered against the hard charging Italian side. The match winning goal was scored by Milan in the second half when Andriy Shevchenko was able to shake loose down the left sideline and crossed to Kaka. Eric Addo couldn't keep pace with Kaka and was a half step slow when he deflected the cross past Tommy Lee. Milan completely shut down Orient for the remainder of the match and moved on to the Semifinals.

***

Drabek grimaced, "That was a bitter blow. We are really going to miss David- especially with 4 of our 6 remaining league matches on the road."

"The whole team is down. We are really going to have to work hard to get them back on an even keel for our match against Southampton," replied Field.

Orient- O.Oskarsson 23,82 M.Borriello 50 M.Carrick 54

Southampton- None

MOM- Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Leyton Orient

Orient needed a boost after the devastating loss of David Poole and received it as Orri Freyr Oskarsson led them to a 4-0 win over Southampton. From the opening whistle Orient pressured their visitors, and it finally paid off when Michael Carrick threaded a pass through that found Oskarsson with space just outside the six yard box. Oskarsson snapped a shot past Stuart Taylor inside the right post for his 25th goal of the season to give Orient the lead. Taylor was stubborn and made a pair of good saves on Danny Byrne and Marco Borriello late in the half to keep the margin at 1-0. He wasn't as fortunate early in the second half. After Anders Svensson had only deflected and not intercepted a through ball- Borriello fired a shot underneath the lunging Taylor from a sharp angle for his 5th goal of the season at Orient. Carrick then scored a dramatic first goal of his own for Orient as he drilled a rising 30 yard blast past Taylor after Carl Laurie laid the ball back for him. Oskarsson then finished off the scoring when he added his 2nd goal of the match when he deflected a William Flood corner past Taylor to finish off the 4-0 win.

Newcastle (3) Leyton Orient (3)

Newcastle- L.Sims 12-OG E.Diouf 71 J.Jenas 74

Orient- J.Torhallsson 65 S.Moore 68 O.Oskarsson 90

MOM- Stefan Moore, Leyton Orient

In a cracker of a match, it was a land of missed opportunities for Orient as they had to fight back to gain a dramatic 3-3 draw at St.James Park. Orient hurt themselves early when Lee Sims tried to head away a Yildiray Basturk free kick- only to knock it into his own net past Tommy Lee. Orient had some wonderful chances to even the match in the first half, but Shay Given was sharp and stopped Danny Byrne and Stefan Moore from close-in. Orient seemed to gain some spark when Johann Torhallsson subbed on for an ineffectual Matthew Etherington. Torhallsson flicked on a long kick from Titus Bramble and Moore turned on the speed to reach the ball first. As Moore reached it, he tapped it back across the net and Torhallsson whipped his shot past Given for the equalizer. It was Moore's hard work that earned him the next goal. Stephen Pearson had threaded a pass through to him alone on the right side- but Given made a sensational parry. Moore reacted quickly and reached the ball in time to fire it past Given as he tried to close the angle off and Orient was ahead 2-1. Orient Manager Drabek was frantically waving at his side to pursue a more defensive formation, but the players weren't paying attention and it quickly hurt Orient as Newcastle evened the match at 2-2. Markus Feulner made a nice chip pass over Mark Harding that put Nicolas Anelka in free on Lee. Lee managed to parry his low shot, but El-Hadji Diouf outmuscled Titus Bramble and smashed home the rebound. Newcastle then moved back in front as Diouf moved past Ryan Garry (who had just subbed on for Carl Laurie) and sent the ball all the way across the net. Basturk quickly ran it down and sent a pass into the center that Jermaine Jenas was able to deflect inside the left post to make it 3-2. Orient's desperation was evident, but their determination was also apparent. Given's clearing kick was intercepted by Lee Sims and his header found Orri Freyr Oskarsson free on the right side. Oskarsson made a short run just inside the edge of the area and then launched a superbly placed shot just inside the left post for the dramatic equalizer with only moments remaining in second half injury time.

***

"Our defense looked in shambles today," grumbled Drabek.

"Carl Laurie had a terrible match, and then Ryan didn't make the play that could have helped prevent Jenas' goal," agreed Field.

Drabek rubbed his chin in frustration, "Tommy Lee has played much better of late, but he hasn't been able to come up with the game saving stop- the ones that we wind up seeing against us lately. I still think I may have to find another keeper to carry us to the next level."

"Summer is soon enough to worry about that Will- let's just finish out this one."

Drabek nodded tiredly.

Blackburn (3) Leyton Orient (3)

Blackburn- J.Halenar 3 G.Pazzini 22 L.Neill 58

Orient- D.Vaughan 15-OG D.Arrieta 68 J.Torhallsson 82

MOM- Giampaolo Pazzini, Blackburn

The Orient backline again let them down with poor play, but Orient struggled back from two goals down to salvage a 3-3 draw against Blackburn. Skipper Carl Laurie, just as against Newcastle, had a bad match and his lack of attention to Juraj Halenar cost Orient the first goal. Eric Addo did a nice job of racing to close down Lucas Neill on the right, but Laurie wandered away fro Halenar and left him standing alone in front of Tommy Lee. Halenar had an easy time deflecting Neill's cross past Lee to send Blackburn off on a flyer. Orient evened the match when David Vaughan tried to head a looping pass over the end line, but instead caught keeper Brad Friedal flat footed as his header caught the right corner of the net. It was Titus Bramble's poor coverage that allowed Giampaolo Pazzini to volley Halenar's hard cross past Lee before he could react and return the home side the halftime lead. Blackburn looked very comfortable as they moved ahead 3-1 when Neill crushed a 30 yard free kick past Lee. Orient wasn't giving up, but not much had been going right for them until Danilo Arrieta (on for a poorly performing Stefan Moore) was able to whisk in a rebound shot after Johann Torhallsson had beaten Friedal cleanly- only to see it ring off the post. Torhallsson and Arrieta then played a pretty give and go before Torhallsson rocketed the equalizer past Friedal. Orient came close to stealing all three points when Orri Freyr Oskarsson shook free in front of the net, but Friedal made a sensational save of his rising blast and kept the final even at 3-3.

***

"Another match that we could have had a much better result in," sighed Field.

"I can't figure out why our backline is suddenly so out of it- but they have really hurt us these last couple matches. Not only that, but today we just got completely outmuscled. Every loose ball seemed to belong to Blackburn- every good pass we seemed to wind up forced off the ball. We were probably fortunate just to earn a draw out of this match."

"We really need a win against Leeds in our last home match," stated Field.

Drabek mutely nodded.

Leyton Orient (2) Leeds (0)

Orient- J.Torhallsson 49-P M.Borriello 53

Leeds- None

MOM- Johann Torhallsson, Leyton Orient

Veteran leadership seems to be pulling Orient through as they try to limp home with the top spot in the EPL. Orient kept their cool in the 2-0 win, something that could not be said of visiting Leeds. During the first half, Leeds apparently irritated the referee with incessant complaining, and suddenly they were drawing yellow cards right and left. Neither side could really muster a good chance in the first half and the scoreless nature created a mild buzz among the Brisbane Road faithful that knew Orient desperately needed a win in their last home match. Orient started piling the pressure on to open the second half, and Nyron Nosworthy was forced to hold Johann Torhallsson to keep him from reaching a loose ball in the area. As the referee was yellow carding Nosworthy, young defender John Ryan said the wrong thing to him and earned his 2nd yellow card and an early departure from the match. Torhallsson drilled the penalty kick inside the left post past Paul Robinson and the crowd seemed to suddenly breathe much easier. Lee Sims started the next goal by lofting a ball for Torhallsson. Torhallsson outleaped Stephen McPhail and flicked it on. Both Nosworthy and Eirik Bakke got a piece of the ball, but it kept bouncing to the far side of the net- where Marco Borriello half volleyed a winner past Robinson to send Orient up 2-0. Down a man, Leeds kept trying to spring Alan Smith, but Orient defenders kept a weather eye on him and prevented him from any strong offensive showing. Orient was content to run out the clock and finish the 2-0 home win.

***

"Whew!" commented Field.

Drabek nodded, "It was a gritty effort all the way around. Johann Torhallsson really stepped up to give us the leadership we needed in the match. He really earned the MOM honours."

"Now we just have to carry this over to our final road matches against Leicester and Everton."

***

"Great work Spencer!" said a very happy Will Drabek as the Orient Under-19 squad celebrated on the field.

Field beamed a relieved smile, "One match- winner take all- the boys played their hearts out and earned it. I am damm happy."

Orient Under-19s Capture Crown

The Leyton Orient and Arsenal Under-19 squads staged an epic duel with the winner taking the Under-19 title. Orient had the better pressure in the first half, but Arsenal keeper Matt White (who earned MOM honours), kept them from breaking the scoreless state. Midway through the second half Ian Adams zinged a long crossing pass that found Adam Roberts at the edge of the area. Roberts broke in and then crossed hard to Dave Hogg in the middle. Hogg volleyed a perfectly guided shot into the far left side of the goal for the only goal in the match. Arsenal had late pressure, but were never able to break the clean sheet.

Leicester (1) Leyton Orient (1)

Leicester- A.Morris 5

Orient- O.Oskarsson 90

MOM- Andreas Isaksson, Leicester

After searching for a way to get a ball past Andreas Isaksson the entire match, Orient finally found the dramatic equalizer in the waning moments of second half injury time as they managed to salvage a 1-1 draw. Leicester had stunned Orient in the early going when Alex Morris hit a curling 30 yard shot that hit the inside edge of the right post and bounced into the net to gain them the lead. Orient swarmed forward looking to even the match, but Isaksson was provide a sensational display of keeping. He made three terrific one-on-one saves against snakebit Stefan Moore in the first half. Leicester could not keep a mark on Moore, but Moore was unable to solve Isaksson. Isaksson also made a nice stop on Orri Freyr Oskarsson in first half injury time. The second half featured more of the same as Orient piled on the pressure. When Isaksson again stopped Moore in the early moments, Jamie Donnelly came on for Moore to try and change Orient's fortunes. Matthew Etherington was playing much better than when last seen and was making strong leftside runs, but they were yielding nothing. With time running out it was another Etherington run and an excellent pass that finally found Oskarsson. Oskarsson didn't do anything fancy with the pass, only making a soft half volley redirection of it and it just snuck into the righthand corner of the net for the equalizer. Etherington then almost won the match outright when he took the ball at midfield dribbled past three tired Leicester defenders only to see Isaksson make another brilliant save to preserve the 1-1 draw for the home side.

***

"We are in a good spot right now," stated Field.

Drabek nodded, "But we still need to clinch it. We know Arsenal is capable of winning all three of their final matches- but they have to be a bit distracted by also facing Milan for the Champions Cup title. All we need is a draw to put it out of reach of them, I don't want to depend on them not winning one of their matches- I would prefer we do it ourselves and win it outright."

"See what I mean?" muttered Drabek.

"Oh yes, I see that we have to take care of our destiny," answered Field as they watched Arsenal finish drubbing 3rd placed Tottenham at White Hart Lane by a 4-1 score.

***

"Well, I'll be!" stated Field as he glanced over at Drabek.

Drabek smiled and offered his hand in a handshake as they quietly celebrated Orient winning the EPL, "Who would have thought Middlesbrough could do it -- a last minute goal and 1-1 draw."

"No matter how it happened- we have done it," smiled Field. "Listen to them out in the street now!"

The rollicking party for the new EPL Champions- Leyton Orient- had suddenly started now and the growing buzz of the crowd could be heard outside the small pub.

"I think we are safer in here," chuckled Drabek.

Everton- O.Lorenzen 73 C.Finnigan 89

Orient- D.Ambrose 90

MOM- Daniel Carr, Leyton Orient

With the EPL title clinched, Orient trotted out the reserves to play their final match of the season at Goodison Park. Though they offered a good effort, Everton was able to score a pair of second half goals to edge Orient 2-1. Everton was clearly the sharper of the two clubs and Daniel Carr did yeoman work in keeping the match scoreless at halftime. He couldn't stop Olivier Lorenzen though, when he was left unmarked behind the backline and Lorenzen was able to take the ball around Carr for an easy goal. Lorenzen and Chris Finnigan then played a neat give and go that saw Jon Spector completely turned and Finnigan drilled a precision shot past Carr into the far left corner of the net. Orient gained a consolation goal when Darren Ambrose deflected a Jan Kristiansen corner past Richard Wright in second half injury time. That was it for Orient though as Everton celebrated the 2-1 win at the end.

Andorra (0) England (3) World Cup Qualifiers Group 4

Andorra- None

England- W.Rooney 23 M.Owen 59 J.Thomas 77

MOM- Ross Gardner, England

On the rain soaked Andorra pitch, England dominated the small side as expected, but had less than expected to show for it as they managed a 3-0 win. England clearly missed the finishing presence of injured David Poole, as Michael Owen continued his struggles. England took the lead in the first half when Wayne Rooney deflected a David Thompson corner past Francesco Manuel Siles, but Siles made two sensational saves on Owen to keep the lead from being more at halftime. Owen missed the net twice on chances that looked like certain goals and also missed over the net twice on more marginal chances. Owen finally broke his slump when he added England's 2nd goal in the second half. He made a nice volley off a pass from Ross Gardner. James Thomas finished off the scoring in the win as Gardner threaded a pass through to him and he popped in the rebound after Siles parried his first attempt. England outshot the Andorrans 24-0 in the match, and there was a lot of discontent that the margin wasn't larger. In other Group matches, Bulgaria and Russia battled to a 1-1 draw and Wales dumped Latvia 4-2, which leaves England a point in front of Bulgaria, Russia and Wales- who are all tied for 2nd. There was more post-match discussion where Manager Drabek reviled the English FA decision to force him into using only 22 players for this and the Latvian match, so that the FA could submit their Confederation Cups roster. Drabek clearly would have preferred having the whole 26 man roster available to England.

England (1) Latvia (0) World Cup Qualifiers Group 4

England- W.Rooney 77

Latvia- None

MOM- Wayne Rooney, England

England provided a wholly unimpressive display as they managed to pull out a 1-0 win over lightly regarded Latvia. The win highlighted England's offensive woes and Michael Owen was subbed on for to a round of boos after another very subpar performance. Wayne Rooney managed to score the lone goal for England when Wes Brown launched a long pass to Jerome Thomas and Thomas headed it all the way to the far side of the net for Rooney to slam the ball into the net. England outshot the visitors 20-3 for the match, but of those 20 shots only 5 were actually on goal. Manager Drabek was visibly frustrated at the club as they wasted opportunity after opportunity. In other Group play Wales hosted Russia and they battled to a 2-2 draw at Cardiff. Bulgaria easily handled Andorra 4-0. England remains atop the Group by one point over Bulgaria and now readies itself for Confederations Cup play.

MOM- Ross Gardner, England

England overcame an ineffective first half to blitz Nigeria in the 2nd half on their way to a convincing 6-0 win. It appeared England was going to continue their struggles as it looked like a scoreless first half that featured Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen shooting wide on good chances and Greg Etafia making a couple splendid saves. David Thompson helped change that when he floated a perfectly shallow lofted ball that found Michael Owen alone in front of the net. Owen did not miss this time as he hammered a shot past Etafia and England had the 1-0 halftime lead. Early in the second half Ross Gardner came on for the struggling James Thomas and he immediately added lightning to the English attack. England started the second half by trying to run Owen deep while breaking the offside trap. It worked a charm as a long ball to Owen and his quick pass back to the middle found Gardner cruising just inside the area. Gardner blistered a shot past Etafia for his 1st International goal. Nigeria wasn't able to break down the England backline and this set up the counterattack for Gardner to flick on to Rooney. Rooney sent the ball inside the left post to make it 3-0 England. David Thompson's corner was deflected by Rio Ferdinand, but Etafia managed to block it- only to see Gardner slam the rebound past him into the net for his 2nd goal of the match. Titus Bramble added his 1st International goal when he challenged Etafia on a long free kick from Thompson and was able to loop the ball over him. It was an unselfish play by Owen that allowed Gardner to finish his hat-trick and cap the scoring in the match. Owen ran down a long pass and then when challenged by Etafia, he slipped the ball over for Gardner to whisk it into the net in the last moments of second half injury time. In Group A, Brazil looked set for the top spot after dumping both Japan and Mexico by 3-0 scores, after Mexico had beaten Senegal 2-1 and then Senegal drew against Japan 2-2. Australia had edged Uruguay 1-0 in the other Group B match.

Australia- B.Emerton 19

MOM- Zeljko Kalac, Australia

England was in deep trouble early on as Titus Bramble was given a redcard for holding Harry Kewell's shirt and Bret Emerton had boomed home the ensuing 25 yard free kick to give the Aussies the lead. It had been a good start to that point for England as they had already applied pressure- only to see Zeljko Kalac make superb saves on both Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen. England's strategy changed with Bramble's sending off and Rooney was replaced by Wes Brown. England tried to give Owen running room to create chances and the strategy started working in the second half. Though they only had 10 men, it was England who was creating the chances. Those finally paid off when Owen made a long run and then beat Glen Bennett on the dribble. He sent a hard cross from Jerome Thomas, who had jumped up into the play and Thomas deflected it past Kalac to even things at 1-1. Kalac made another sensational save on Owen to keep England from gaining the lead. Richard Wright made a couple excellent stops, including saving a corner in injury time as the two sides had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

England (3) Uruguay (1) Confederations Cup Group B

England- M.Owen 35,67-P R.Ferdinand 90

MOM- Carl Laurie, England

As they walked on to the field for their match against Uruguay, England knew exactly what it would take to move on to the Confederation Cup Semifinals. Australia had beaten Nigeria 3-1 earlier to clinch a place and England needed a win if it wanted to capture the top place (and avoid Brazil). England was without Glen Johnson, who broke his wrist in practice and will miss the remainder of the tournament. Uruguay got off to a great start when Carlos Diogo found Chevanton lurking behind Sol Campbell. Chevanton turned on the jets and Campbell couldn't get to him before he boomed a low shot that trickled through Richard Wright and into the net. Needing some inspiration, England received a boost when David Thompson slipped a pass through two defenders and the rejuvanted Michael Owen scorched the equalizer past Gustavo Munua. It was a rough match with liberal dosings of yellow cards- especially to Uruguay. In the second half, Alejandro Gonzalez made a dangerous two footed challenge on Ross Gardner in the area and was lucky to escape with only a yellow card. Owen stepped and smashed the penalty kick home for his 2nd goal of the match and England finally had a lead. Uruguay continued their rough play and Chevanton was sent off at 88 minutes with his 2nd yellow card. England was able to take advantage of that when Owen Hargreaves hit an inswinging corner that Rio Ferdinand headed home to clinch the 3-1 win and top placement in Group B. Mexico and Japan played to a scoreless draw, so England will be facing Mexico- while Australia and Brazil face off in the other Semifinal.

Mexico (0) England (1) Confederations Cup Semifinal

Mexico- None

England- J.Cole 33

MOM- Conejo Perez, Mexico

England dominated another rough match and will move on to face Brazil in the Finals thanks to their 1-0 win. Mexico almost got started on a flyer when Steven Gerrard's backpass to Titus Bramble was wild and went past him. That put Ismael Iniquez in free on Richard Wright and Wright not only stopped his first attempt, but was able to parry his shot on the rebound past the post. Conejo Perez had some magical moments to keep Mexico in the match and one of them came early when he stopped Michael Owen when Owen looked like he had taken the ball around him. England got a break to score their goal as Joe Cole ripped a shot from the edge of the area and Iniguez slightly changed its direction- enough for it to sneak past Conejo Perez into the right corner of the net. Mexico had already received 4 yellow cards at the point when Rafael Garcia came and pushed Owen down from behind to earn a redcard at 57 minutes. England kept pressing the play, but Conejo Perez stopped Gerrard from close in and then stopped Owen again in one-on-one situation. It was only a 1-0 score, but it could have been much worse for how much play England had in the Mexico end. Brazil beat Australia 3-2 to grab the other place in the Finals.

Brazil (0) England (2) Confederations Cup Final

Brazil- None

England- R.Gardner 45 W.Rooney 48

MOM- Wes Brown, England

England rode a strong defensive effort and a pair of timely goals to upset favored Brazil 2-0 in the Confederations Cup Final. The first half was highly entertaining as the free wheeling Brazil attack ran into a stubborn and determined English backline. Richard Wright made a couple of huge early saves on Kaka and Roberto Carlos to keep Brazil off the board. At the other end Wayne Rooney worked very hard to run down a ball and cross to a wide open Michael Owen, but Diego made a good parry and Owen was left with head in hands again. Just before halftime, a nice flick by David Thompson gave Owen room in the area. He broke out, but Juan was able to knock the ball away. It rolled right to Ross Gardner and he ripped a low shot into the far left corner of the net to give England the 1-0 lead. England then stunned Brazil in the opening moments of the second half as Wes Brown made a timely interception of a long pass and sent it back to Joe Cole. Cole had room to run on the left, but was being closed down when he chipped a pass into the middle and Wayne Rooney dove to head it past Diego for England's 2nd goal. It was a staunch defensive effort from there as Brazil maintained control most of the remainder of the second half, but the England defense stood its ground and Wright kept the clean sheet to capture the Confederations Cup. The win cost Brazilian manager Oswaldo de Oliveira his job, as he was fired after the match. The win also allowed England to surpass its record- with its 16th straight unbeaten match.

Orient Comings and Goings From Summer 2009

Coming to Orient:

Jens Everard (Purchased from Anderlecht for 3.1 Million)

Evrard is a 25 yr old Belgian D/DMC that is very likely to be paired with Titus Bramble as a starter in Orient's central defense.

Robert Huth (Signed on Bosman from Chelsa)

Huth is a 24 yr old German DC that will help provide cover for Titus Bramble.

Sebastien Frey (Purchased from Parma for 16.5 Million)

Frey was a product of intensive negotiations over the summer. Parma finally agreed to sell the 29 yr old GK for the huge sum of 16.5 Million. Frey was brought to Orient to be the #1 keeper and to help Tommy Lee develop.

Francesco Coco (Signed on Bosman from Inter)

Coco is a 32 yr old D/DML that might wind up starting leftback. His credentials are impressive and his veteran presence is bound to help the still youthful Orient squad.

Michele Marchese (Signed on free from Milan)

Marchese is a 20 yr old Italian MRC who already has 5 Under-21 goals. He had played well for Milan in sparing action, but was looking to receive more playing time and was willing to come to Orient to try and earn that.

Elliot Grandin (Signed on free from Real Madrid)

Grandin is a hugely promising 21 yr old French SC that had sizzled on Real Madrid 'B', but hadn't yet broken on to the senior side. He was looking for more playing time and like Marchese thought that Orient might be able to offer that.

Leaving on the Express:

Jon Otsemobor (Sold to Bristol City for 3.1 Million)

Jan Schlosser (Sold to Bristol City for 1.2 Million)

Otsemobor and teammate Jan Schlosser were both sold to newly promoted Bristol City as they tried to strengthen their squad to play in the EPL. Both were excess in the Orient plans due to the other additions.

Will Haining (Sold to Bradford City for 300K)

Haining never played well enough to really merit a regular position- it was time for him to get a shot at another club.

Wade Small (Sold to Aston Villa for 625K)

Jone Samuelsen (Sold to Aston Villa for 700K)

Small never played well enough to earn a lot of playing time when it was hoped he would split time with Danny Byrne. Small and Samuelsen were both unhappy about their lack of first team time and they will get better shots with Villa.

Clint Hill (Released on free)

Flavio Dias (Released on free)

Stephen Clegg (Released on free)

"Are you sure that is wise?" asked Field. "You know he wants to leave."

"I don't want to let him go to Tottenham- even if we got Robin Faber in exchange. David (Fox) will get his chance this season and if he pans out we will try to sign him to a new contract."

"He may not sign- you already know he wants a *lot* of money."

Drabek shrugged, "I know. Just rolling the dice here Spencer and I think the best call is not to let him go to Tottenham. Much as I would love to add Faber on our backline- we don't really *need* him. Tottenham could explode if they add the playmaking ability that David has..."

***

"Two down already," sighed Drabek.

"We will be taxing our depth soon," agreed Field.

2nd Major Orient Injury

Leyton Orient today learned that promising rightback Mitchell Booth will miss the next 5 months after surgery. Booth, who left a practice session with a torn groin, had successful surgery, but won't be returning to the lineup until sometime in 2010. The news was also a blow to Wales, where Booth had earned his 1st Cap this summer. Booth joins fellow fullback in Adrian Nevins in being off for a long period. Nevins had knee surgery and is currently not slated to return until late September or early October.

Community Shield- Wembley

Leyton Orient (2) Ipswich (0)

Orient- M.Harding 32 R.Calliste 38

Ipswich- None

MOM- Mark Harding, Leyton Orient

Orient easily handled Division 1 Ipswich as they won the Community Shield in their first try with a 2-0 win. Ipswich had earned the right to face Orient by upsetting Manchester United on penalties in the FA Cup Final. Despite Orient featuring few of their summer additions, they had little trouble dominating the midfield against Ipswich. Orient's first goal came when David Fox sent a long, curling free kick into the edge of the six yard box and Mark Harding outleaped two defenders to deflect it past Kevin Davis. Orient quickly added a second goal when Harding stepped in front of an Ipswich pass and sent the ball a long pass in to space for Ramon Calliste to run down. Calliste did so and then blasted a low shot that Davis was able to get his hands on, but which kept going through him to softly trickle into the net. Davis made a couple superb saves to keep Orient locked on to two goals. Tommy Lee also came up with some very good work, as he made a couple sensational saves to blunt the Ipswich rally in the second half and keep the clean sheet in the 2-0 win.

***

"I guess maybe I should have taken Tottenham's offer," sighed Drabek.

"We knew he was unhappy. Not much you can do now- other than allow him to be on transfer list," replied Field.

"They will have to meet the price to get him though- not with two more years on contract with us."

Fox Transfer Listed

David Fox, Leyton Orient's 25 yr old MC, was placed on the transfer list at his own request today. Fox wants to move to a larger club and to find someplace where he can play every match- not something he has been able to do in his two seasons at Orient. The listed amount for Fox is over 10 Million dollars and reportedly both Tottenham and Real Madrid are sending scouts to observe Fox.

Thompson Joins Orient

Promising 21 yr old AMFL Danny Thompson finally joined Orient today, after having signed with them during the summer. Thompson came up through the Norwich youth program and had played regularly the last few seasons at the Division 1 club. He will likely spend a lot of time on the Orient reserve side this season.

***

"Do we really need him- well maybe not. Still, I really like the blend of his talent and I think he might be able to help us in a couple seasons. I don't think we are going to be able to get Adrian Nevins re-signed, so bringing him is a hedge against Francesco Coco aging quickly," stated Will Drabek.

"He has some exciting qualities, but I think Carl Laurie is better there."

"That might be true, but this season we are going to give Carl a good long look at midfield. His tackling, speed and passing abilities may be just what we need there..."

Orient Finds Franz

Leyton Orient today announced the transfer purchase of 22 yr old German DL Matthias Franz from Hannover 96. Hannover was willing to accept Orient's offer of 850K because they had not had any luck in getting Franz signed to a new contract and wanted to cash in before losing him. At Orient, Franz is set to apprentice with storied veteran Francesco Coco at the leftback spot. Rumors aboud at the Orient camp that Carl Laurie will move from fullback into the midfield.

Orient, buoyed by the surprise return of David Poole after 4 months off with a broken leg, made a strong statement with their 3-0 defeat of Tottenham at Brisbane Road. The televised match saw Orient jump on top when Orri Freyr Oskarsson had plenty of room to blast a rising shot past Lars Hirschfield after Danny Byrne had found him unmarked when Stilian Petrov lost touch with him. Poole, still looking slowed by the recently healed leg, used his great sense around the net to be on hand to swat a rebound past Hirschfield after Hirschfield made a good parry on a shot from Stephen Pearson. Pearson also was the instigator for the lone goal in the second half when Jerome Thomas tripped him in the area. Stefan Moore converted the penalty kick for the clinching goal in the satisfying 3-0 win.

Orient wasted a golden chance to earn a win when their backline got caught too far up and left Sebastien Frey trying to deal with too many Leicester choices for a dramatic equalizer. Orient scored midway through the first half when Marco Borriello zipped a pass across the area that David Poole volleyed past Andreas Isaksson. The second half featured several wasted Orient chances, as they weren't particularly sharp in moving the ball. Orient still appeared to be on their way to the win, until the late breakdown that saw Lee Sims too far up and Eric Addo (subbed on for injured Titus Bramble) making a coverage mistake that led to the dramatic equalizer for the home side.

Orient- O.Oskarsson 15 S.Moore 27,55 S.Pearson 89

MOM- Stefan Moore, Leyton Orient

Orient got back on track with an clinical display of passing as they dumped visiting Aston Villa 4-1. The score could have been much different as Orient lost two goals to offside calls and Villa missed a penalty in the second half. Orient was on the board first when Orri Freyr Oskarsson pounced on a loose ball and fired a sharp angled shot underneath Thomas Sorensen. Stefan Moore showed superb touch when he chipped a pass from David Poole over Sorensen from close in to make it 2-0 at halftime. Oskarsson was the trigger man on Moore's 2nd goal of the match. Oskarsson scorched a pass past a defender and Moore's choice was to rip a midlevel shot inside the far right post. Taiwo Atieno had a chance to bring Villa a goal back, but Sebastien Frey saved the penalty kick after Jan Evrard was called for pushing Mista in the area. Villa did get their consolation goal when Evrard missed intercepting a looping Mista cross and that allowed Darius Vassell all the time he needed to finally find a way to place a shot past Frey. Orient cancelled out that goal as they finished the scoring when Stephen Pearson headed a short cross from Danilo Arrieta (subbed on for tiring Poole) past Sorensen to make the final margin 4-1. Moore lost out on his hat-trick when Arrieta was ruled offside midway through the second half.

"We already have wingers galore!"

Drabek shrugged at Field's comment, "Look Spencer- Bojan Djordjic and Matthew Etherington both have contracts that they are going to want huge raises on. Etherington hasn't played that well for us. I think he can really help us on the left side- we have seen how well he has played against us..."

Orient Buys Fredheim Holm at Transfer Deadline

Just beating the transfer deadline, Leyton Orient announced the transfer purchase of 24 yr old Norwegian AMRLC Daniel Fredheim Holm. Fredheim Holm's reported purchase price from Arsenal was 4.6 Million. Fredheim Holm had demonstrated that he has EPL class ability when he shone for Everton while on loan last season, but still wasn't able to gain a place on the Arsenal side and wanted to move to a club that would give him more playing time.

Blackburn- D.Braathen 65 D.Thompson 84

Orient- D.Poole 15,33 S.Moore 46

MOM- Stefan Moore, Leyton Orient

Orient seemed on their way to a comfortable win when they went up 3-0 early in the second half, but Blackburn roared back and Orient had to hang on for a hard fought 3-2 win. Orient looked very crisp in the first half as they stormed to a halftime advantage. Stephen Pearson sent a shallow lofted pass and Stefan Moore flicked it over Martin Taylor for David Poole. Poole reached the ball first and whistled a precision shot past Brad Freidal inside the far left post. Danny Byrne capped a mad scramble that finally saw him with the ball on the right edge of the area. He sent a short, sharp cross that Poole had an easy time deflecting into the right side of the net for his 2nd goal of the match. Daniel Fredheim Holm had an impressive debut for Orient as his hard work finally resulted in a pass into open space on the right side of the area. Moore ran down the ball and then fired a sharp angled shot past Freidal into the far left corner of the net to make it 3-0 Orient. Blackburn started their comeback when Daniel Braathen took advantage of Robert Huth's mistake. Huth had wandered away from Braathen to challenge Jami Puustinen in the air, when Jan Evrard was already there. Puustinen headed the ball back to Braathen who broke in and made a clinical shot inside the far right post past Frey to draw a goal back. Blackburn would then rue the offside call that lost Braathen a 2nd goal a few minutes later- as Braathen had not stayed onside during a midfield scramble. Blackburn was right in the match when David Thompson struck a beautiful 30 yard shot past Frey- a goal that might well be Goal of the Month. Blackburn had two more good chances, but they went begging as Frey pushed both of them over the bar to preserve the 3-2 Orient win.

***

"It was closer than it should have been, but I was really happy with the way we played early in the match," stated a tired Drabek.

"Our pressure was really grinding their backline down, but then Danny Byrne, David Fox and Moore all got tired," offered Field.

"If Fox had more stamina he could really become something. Still, I am glad we kept him- despite the huge offers we received from Juventus and Real Madrid."

"That is probably a clue that we should try and keep him," chuckled Field.

MOM- David Poole, England

England welcomed back David Poole in much the same manner as his parent club- Leyton Orient- did, as his scoring helped lead them to a crushing 5-0 win over Wales that likely doomed Wales dream of making the World Cup. It didn't take long to see the crispness of the English offense as it mowed down Wales. Ross Gardner sent a sizzling pass into Poole in the area, and he made a quick change of direction that sent Daniel Gabbidon by him before he rocketed a shot past Darren Ward to give England an early lead with his 20th International goal. Wayne Rooney then added his 20th International goal when Steven Gerrard's through ball gave him time to crash a shot past Ward from the left side of the six yard box. Poole added his 2nd goal of the match after Rio Ferdinand sent a through ball past Gabbidon. Poole finished the hat-trick when Rooney gave him a quick cross and he deflected inside the far left post. Poole missed getting a 4th goal when Ward saved both his penalty and the rebound after Gabbidon had been forced to pull him down in the area. Steven Gerrard capped the scoring when he headed a superb corner from David Fox, making his 1st Cap, past Ward to make the final margin 5-0. Russia easily beat Andorra 3-0 and Bulgaria edged Latvia 2-1 to keep pace with England.

Bulgaria came into their home match with England on a roll and if they could dump their visitors they would take over 1st place in the Group. Their hopes and their fans hopes were high. What they saw was bit different than their hopes, but thanks to the magnificent work from their keeper Dimitar Ivankov, they were able to hang on for a scoreless draw. England pressured the home side from the opening whistle. Even without Joe Cole, who had been injured in practice the day before, the English piled against the Bulgaria area with the relentless waves of a stormy sea. Ivankov made a brilliant save on Wayne Rooney in the early moments, as he was able to push his half-volley over the net. Ivankov also made a difficult save on David Poole, pushing his shot around the post. England may have been frustrated in finishing, but they were incessant on the attack as they only allowed Bulgaria 2 shots on goal. Ivankov made a pair of late saves on Steven Gerrard and Poole again to preserve the scoreless draw. In other Group play, Wales beat Andorra 3-0 to keep their hopes of a 2nd place finish alive. Russia beat Latvia 5-1 to set up a final match showdown with England at Wembley in a month. England holds the top spot in the Group by a point over Bulgaria and Russia (Bulgaria 2nd on goals). Wales is 3 points back of Bulgaria and Russia.

Orient fought off a determined Newcastle effort to win a close 3-1 match. The first portion of the first half saw keepers Sebastien Frey and Shay Given trading superb saves. Frey stopped El-Hadji Diouf on a close-in shot and Given saved Stefan Moore's blast. Moore put Orient in front after Given made a miraculous save of David Poole's blistering shot. Moore drilled the angled rebound into the open net for his 5th goal of the season. Newcastle evened things when Olivier Bernard snuck in to deflect Yildiray Basturk's corner past Frey inside the left post. Orient moved back in front early in the second half as Steven Taylor could only deflect Moore's through ball to Poole. Poole went in free on Given, but Given parried his shot away. Poole quickly ran down the rebound and took it farther as Given desperately tried to get over to him. Poole fired the sharp angled shot inside the near right post for his 5th goal of the season to give Orient the 2-1 lead. Poole then made the match much more comfortable for the Brisbane Road fans when he and Moore played a tap-n-run. Poole flicked the ball to Moore who pushed hard down the left side. Jermaine Jenas tried to get back to mark Poole, but Moore slotted the pass to him and Poole whipped it into the net for the final goal in the 3-1 win.

MOM- Stefan Moore, Leyton Orient

It was a confident display by Orient as they pressured Dinamo's backline until it finally cracked and were able to take away a 2-0 road win to start their Champions Cup play. Dinamo keeper Robert Sertic played a terrific first half as he made sensational saves against David Poole, Matthew Etherington and Stefan Moore to keep things scoreless. On the Orient side, Sebastien Frey is living up to his advance billing. In the opening moments of the first half he made a terrific save against Niko Kranjcar. He also pushed a free kick from Ivan Kurtovic over the bar. Orient's pressure finally broke down the Dinamo defensive effort and Michael Carrick (subbed on for a tiring David Fox) sent a through ball for Stefan Moore. Moore had enough room to blast a shot toward the far corner. It appeared Sertic had made another save when he got his hand on the ball- but instead it deflected straight behind him into the net to stun the home crowd. Orient took advantage of the momentary disorganization on Dinamo's part when Stephen Pearson's pass found Poole lurking unmarked in the area. Poole rifled his shot inside the near right post and Orient had struck for a 2-0 lead in a three minute span. With the lead, Orient backed off its aggressiveness. Dinamo took advantage to spring Kranjcar on a counterattack, but Frey was again equal to the task and kept the clean sheet in the Orient win. In the other Group match, Lyon and PAO played to a scoreless draw at Lyon.

Orient- J.Kristiansen 75

MOM- Luke Steele, Southampton

In a match that Orient controlled much of the play in, it took a terrific shot to allow them to edge Southampton 1-0. The first half was a bit on the quiet side, with each club trading a few scoring opportunities. It was easily apparent that both Luke Steele and Tommy Lee had brought their 'A' games, as they kept things scoreless in the first half. Orient started piling on the pressure in the second half and Steele was equal to the challenge as he made several stops. The one he couldn't get was a breathtaking curling shot from Jan Kristiansen which should receive consideration for goal of the month. Kristiansen, who had subbed on for David Fox, hit a 25 yard curving kick that snuck inside the near left post past Steele. Orient's Danilo Arrieta missed several good chances to put the match out of reach for Orient, and they were forced to hold off a late rally where Lee's diving parry of a Darren Carter header saved the three points for visiting Orient.

"Better to send him out now- we might have him back for the last part of the season," stated Field.

"You're right, but frustrating to lose another midfielder."

Orient Loses Carrick

Leyton Orient today announced that midfielder Michael Carrick would be lost for the next 5 months due to surgery. Carrick had successful surgery to correct a torn hamstring and faces a lengthy recovery, but Orient remains optimistic that he will be able to return late in the season.

Orient- O.Oskarsson 8,75 J.Torhallsson 34 M.Borriello 90

Wolves- Z.Vukic 14

MOM- Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Leyton Orient

Orient broke open a close match against the Wolves, scoring a pair of late goals to finish off their visitors 4-1. Orient started the scoring when Orri Freyr Oskarsson and Johann Torhallsson played a nice give-n-go play. Oskarrsson sent a pass out to Torhallsson on the left and Torhallsson immediately headed it back. Oskarsson was unmarked and whistled a shot past Conejo Perez inside the near left post. The Wolves quickly evened the match when skipper Zvonimir Vukic curled a 30 yard free kick inside the left post past Sebastien Frey. Orient regained the halftime lead on a precision shot by Torhallsson. Wolves fell asleep on an Oskarsson free kick, assuming that he would blast away at the net. Instead, Oskarsson sent it to a breaking Torhallsson from the left sideline and he ripped a shot off the inside of the far right post for a terrific Orient team goal. Orient finally broke the match open in the second half. Oskarsson added his 2nd goal of the match with a great deflection of a Darren Ambrose corner. Conejo Perez got a hand on the ball, but it went past him to give Orient a 3-1 lead. Marco Borriello finished off the scoring for the match as he took a flick on from Oskarsson and struck a hard, low shot that Conejo Perez couldn't stop.

"We played well today- especially for having rested David Poole, Stefan Moore, Stephen Pearson and Danny Byrne," offered Field.

"Everyone on the senior side knows they are getting chances to play. It is the only way we will survive all the European competition and the inevitable injuries," agreed Drabek.

***

Drabek sighed as he looked at the report, "Ankle ligaments- he will also be out for awhile."

Field grunted, "Good thing we have some depth on the wings- looks like we will need it."

Fredheim Holm Out

Leyton Orient's newest acquisition, midfielder Daniel Fredheim Holm, will be out for a month due to strained ankle ligaments. Fredheim Holm wanted to come back quicker, but was sent for a rehab assignment to try and fully heal the lingering problems with his ankle.

Leyton Orient (1) Lyon (0) Champions Cup 1st phase Group C

Orient- D.Poole 7

Lyon- None

MOM- David Poole, Leyton Orient

Orient took an early lead and then played a steady match as they edged visiting Lyon in Champions Cup play. Orient struck quickly to take the lead. Danny Byrne volleyed a throw in directly to Stefan Moore. Moore flicked the ball back and found Poole a step behind Patrick Muller. Poole had enough time to drive a searching midlevel shot past Gregory Coupet to give Orient the 1-0 lead. That would turn out to be the only goal needed as both sides offered a determined effort, but no more goals were scored. Orient suffered another loss to injury as Stefan Moore, in the midst of a terrific start for his season, will miss the next two months due to a groin injury. In the other Group match it was Dinamo travelling to PAO and battling to a scoreless draw.

***

Will Drabek was beaming when he caught up with Spencer Field in the hallway, "Finally some good news Spencer- David Fox asked to stay with the club."

Field smiled brightly, "What changed his mind?"

"Just getting to play more regularly. He also asked me to start talking with his agent on a contract extension."

"After all the injuries, that is good news."

MOM- Stephen Pearson, Leyton Orient

Orient struck for a pair of first half goals and then closed out what had been an entertaining match with a pair of late goals for a 4-0 road victory. Chelsea tried to press Orient early, but Sebastien Frey came up with good saves on Eirik Bakke and Stephen McPhail. Orient gained the lead when David Poole had an easy time taking the ball around Paul Robinson after David Fox made a neat chip pass into him. Poole wasted little time scoring his 2nd goal of the match and 10th of the season, this time after a good through ball from Stephen Pearson allowed him in free against Robinson. Chelsea tried to rally and Luca Amenta came close, but Frey parried his shot away. Orient then clinched the match with a blast from Johann Torhallsson that Robinson parried. The ball wasn't cleared away by young Adam Mitchell and Torhallsson smashed the loose ball past Robinson. Torhallsson then set up Danilo Arrieta with a scorching cross that Arrieta perfectly timed and deflected past Robinson to cap the 4-0 win.

ENGLAND

England (3) Russia (0) World Cup Qualifying Group 4

England- J.Thomas 27 W.Rooney 30,63

Russia- None

MOM- Jerome Thomas, England

The match was winner take all in front of a packed Wembley. If England won, they would win the Group and qualify for the World Cup. If Russia won they would win the Group. If the sides drew, it would open the door for Bulgaria to capture the top spot in the Group. From the opening whistle the Russians were proving that this would be a rough match. David Poole went off after five minutes of play to stitch up a large gash in his forehead. Joe Cole went down with a broken shoulder after a collision with Yegor Titov at 15 minutes. Despite that, England was showing much more quickness and fluidness in their passing attack and were breaking down the Russian midfield. David Fox, who was starting for his first time- replacing injured Ross Gardner, made a sizzling run down the right and just missed wide. Shortly after missing, he repeated his wending run and this time crossed to Jerome Thomas. Thomas put a strong header on the ball and it eluded Ruslan Nigmatullin to give England the lead. Glen Johnson's long pass was touched on by David Thompson and the ball was teed up perfectly for Wayne Rooney to blast it inside the right post as England moved up 2-0 at halftime. Fox then put on another amazing run as he moved all the way from the rightside down the left sideline before crossing back to the middle. Rooney deflected the ball past Nigmatullin to put England ahead 3-0. Another injury took Steven Gerrard out of the match with a badly bruised shoulder and Thomas went down in the waning moments of the match with a strained groin as England was content to play solid defense and hand Richard Wright another clean sheet in the 3-0 win. The win will send England on as automatic qualifiers from Group 4. Bulgaria, by virtue of a 1-1 draw with Wales, finished 2nd in the Group- 1 point ahead of Russia and 3 points ahead of Wales. Latvia crushed Andorra to leave the hapless Andorrans with an 0-10-0 record, 0 goals scored and 36 against.

Leyton Orient (5) Everton (1)

Orient- J.Torhallsson 12,22 D.Poole 25,41,82

Everton- P.Black 44

MOM- David Poole, Leyton Orient

Everton came to tangle with Orient in a battle of the two unbeaten EPL squads at this early juncture. They left with a loss as Orient routed them 5-1. Orient's precision passing put Everton behind early in the match. Stephen Pearson's lovely through ball found David Poole at the edge of the six yard box. Instead of shooting, Poole sent a hard cross to Johann Torhallsson. As Richard Wright reacted to the cross, Torhallsson volleyed back to the right side of the net and it went inside the post. Next it was Francesco Coco making a splendid pass that found Torhallsson on the run. Torhallsson wasted little time blistering a shot past Wright inside the left post for his 2nd goal of the match. Matthew Etherington's long crossing pass from over midfield hit Joseph Yobo, but then kept bouncing. Poole ran onto it and flicked it into the net past a diving Wright to make it 3-0. Poole scored his 2nd of the game when Etherington found him with a cross from the just inside the corner and Poole deflected it past Wright. Everton drew a goal back when Phil Black got a bit of revenge against the Orient club that dumped him earlier this season. Black headed a cross from James McFadden past Sebastien Frey to make the halftime score 4-1. Orient closed out the match with Poole finishing off his hat-trick by rapping in a rebound after Wright had parried a header from Titus Bramble on a Jan Kristiansen free kick in the late stages. The 5-1 win had the Brisbane Road faithful very happy afterwards.

PAO- E.Olisadebe 64 T.Seedorf 83-P

Orient- None

MOM- Giannis Arabatzis, PAO

Orient suffered their first loss this season as they fell to PAO 2-0 in front of a packed house in Athens. The two sides battled up and down the pitch in the first half, with Orient generating some good chances. PAO keeper Giannis Arabatzis was stellar throughout the match and never more than when he parried away what looked like a certain goal by David Poole. PAO finally broke the ice when Juan Albin crossed from the right side of the six yard box and Emmanuel Olisadebe had an easy time heading the ball into the left side. PAO got the clinching goal when Carl Laurie was yellow carded for tripping Makis Costis in the area. Ton Seedorf converted the penalty kick for his 1st goal at PAO. PAO provided staunch defense down the stretch and kept Orient from any close in chances as they preserved the 2-0 clean sheet. Dinamo defeated Lyon 2-0 in other Group C action.

Norwich (2) Leyton Orient (6) League Cup 3rd round

Norwich- P.McVeigh 24,31

Orient- O.Oskarsson 13,25,45,48,71,84

MOM- Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Leyton Orient

It was already known that Orri Freyr Oskarsson was an explosive scorer from last season's performance. He outdid himself in Orient's League Cup match at Norwich. Oskarsson scored all 6 Orient goals in breaking the single game scoring record as Orient rolled over Division 1 Norwich 6-2. He struck quickly to give Orient the lead when Marco Borriello flicked a header on to allow Oskarsson to fire a 20 yard shot past Joe Lewis for his 5th goal of the season. Norwich evened things when Carl Laurie fell down while moving the ball and Paul McVeigh took the loose ball to the left side before launching a shot inside the far right post. Laurie redeemed himself when he keyed the next goal. Laurie's long pass set up a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing sequence that saw Borriello volley it for Ramon Calliste. Calliste headed it back and Oskarsson had an easy finish for his 2nd goal. Stubborn Norwich didn't wait long to even the match again as Kevin Mitchell crossed to McVeigh. Mark Harding had lost touch with McVeigh and Orient paid the price as McVeigh whisked the ball into the open net to make it 2-2 with his 5th of the season. Norwich once again had problems the three forward formation Orient was using and Curtis Woodhouse's excellent through ball allowed Oskarsson to finish his hat-trick before halftime as he drilled a shot past Lewis inside the left post. The first half was closely played, but the second half belonged to Orient. Michele Marchese sent the ball out to the left and Calliste crossed back for the unattended Oskarsson. Oskarsson took his time before moving to the right and blasting the ball past Lewis. Oskarsson then lost a goal when he scored, but Borriello was ruled offside. He marched on with his 5th goal of the match as Jamie Donnelly (on for Calliste) ran onto a pass and crossed for Oskarsson. Oskarsson's header hit the crossbar and bounced in. Oskarsson then capped his stellar match with his 6th of the match and 10th of the season when Carl Laurie's threaded pass found him alone at the left corner of the net and he volleyed past Lewis.

Arsenal (0) Leyton Orient (2)

Arsenal- None

Orient- D.Poole 51 J.Torhallsson 79

MOM- Sebastien Frey, Leyton Orient

Arsenal and their fans at Ashburton Grove dearly wanted to win this match, both to boost their place in the standings and to help cut the visitors down to size. On a wet pitch it looked like they might well do so early in the match. Thierry Henry had a superb chance, but Sebastien Frey snared his rising shot. Frey then stopped Adriano when it looked like he would score. Orient missed a couple chances of their own as Johann Torhallsson missed wide of the net and Phillipe Senderos was able to get back and make a saving tackle on David Poole when it looked like he would score. Orient broke through early in the second half with a superb display of teamwork. Jan Evrard started the play with a long pass into space on the left side. Johann Torhallsson ran the ball down in the left corner and sent a short pass into Matthew Etherington- who had jumped up into the play and was just inside the left edge of the area. Etherington quickly sent a cross for Poole, but it skipped just past him. Poole reacted more quickly than Senderos and slid and hooked the ball into the right side of the net before Arsenal's new young keeper- James Hicks- could get there. Hard work by David Fox set up the 2nd goal. Fox took the ball away from Patrick Viera at midfield and then battled Viera's attempts to tackle him and worked his way through. Hicks hesitated and then came out to try and smother the ball, but Fox reached it first and struck a low shot. Hicks got a piece of the ball but it skittered through and though Fox could have reached it- he let Johann Torhallsson, who was streaking in from the left side, smash the ball into the open net to make it 2-0. Arsenal tried to rally, but Frey had the answers for shots by Mike Zonneveld and Jermaine Pennant and Arsenal was left with a disappointing 2-0 home loss.

***

"Great match by the boys- very hard work!" cheerily commented Field.

"I was very impressed by the way David Fox never quit going- his hard work earned us that 2nd goal, even if he wasn't the one to put it in," agreed Drabek.

Orient- O.Oskarsson 3,18,32 M.Borriello 47 D.Poole 81-P,87

PAO- None

MOM- Orri Freyr Oskarsson, Leyton Orient

Orient gained a large measure of revenge on visiting PAO as they crushed them 6-0 in Champions Cup play. With Orri Freyr Oskarsson again playing up front, the Greek side had problems as they could not keep the quickness and elusiveness of Oskarsson under wraps. PAO has to wonder if the match would have been altered if Emmanuel Olisadebe had scored in the opening moments. A long pass had sprung Olisdebe past Jan Evrard and he went in alone on Sebastien Frey. Frey was able to smother his shot and then made a quick long throw to Stephen Pearson. Pearson sent a looping pass deep into PAO territory and David Poole headed it down for Oskarsson. Oskarsson was unmarked and wasted little time driving his shot past Giannis Arabatzis. Pearson also triggered the second goal with another long pass that found Poole at the corner of the six yard box. Poole's blast was parried away by Arabatzis, but Oskarsson was right on hand to push it into the net for his 2nd goal of the match. The Greek side was attempting to play a physical match, but the referee was handing out yellow cards left and right and at 28 minutes PAO defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos earned his 2nd yellow and an early shower. Oskarsson took advantage of the extra room when Marco Borriello was able to flick a header on to him and he sent a rising shot inside the left post for his hat-trick. Orient continued their onslaught in the second half and David Fox sent a soft pass in that Borriello fired off the inside of the right post to make it 4-0. Loukas Vyntra pushed Pearson in the air on a cross from Danny Byrne to give David Poole a chance to add to the Orient total. Poole converted the penalty kick to make it 5-0 with his 15th goal of the season. Poole then finished off the scoring in the match as he outraced Arabatzis to a through ball from Jan Kristiansen (on for Fox) and slid it under him for the final goal in the 6-0 win. In other Group play, Dinamo beat winless Lyon 5-2 to take firm hold of 2nd place in the Group.

Chelsea- None

MOM- Daniel Fredheim Holm, Leyton Orient

In the battle between the 1st and 2nd place clubs in the EPL it was no contest as Orient destroyed Chelsea 5-0. Chelsea had a couple early chances in the first half, but Orient quickly took control of the match. David Poole launched a long pass that Johann Torhallsson was able to outrace Simone Padoin too. Torhallsson then took the ball around a diving Marcos- having to leap over his dive- and put the ball into the net for a spectacular start for Orient. Torhallsson returned the favor with a lead pass for Poole. Poole played a 1-2 with Daniel Fredheim Holm and fired the ball past Marcos after Fredheim Holm touched it back. It was Poole's turn to dish again as he flicked a pass from Lee Sims to unattended Fredheim Holm and Fredheim Holm blasted a low shot through Marcos for his 1st goal at Orient to make it 3-0 at half. Things were no better in the second half for Chelsea. Orient worked a textbook passing sequence as Sims passed to Poole, Poole tapped it back for Fredheim Holm, Fredheim Holm sent a sizzling pass to unmarked Matthew Etherington and Etherington slid it past Marcos for his 1st goal of the season to make it 4-0 Orient. Danilo Arrieta then capped the scoring in the match in the last moments of injury time as he took a well placed pass from Torhallsson and ripped it past Marcos to finish the 5-0 win.

Bristol City (1) Leyton Orient (3)

Bristol City- D.Proffitt 13

Orient- M.Franz 25 M.Borriello 29,75

MOM- Marco Borriello, Leyton Orient

Bristol City hosted Orient with all the bad feelings of old home week, as they featured ex-Orient players David Livermore, Jon Otsemobor and Jan Schlosser in their starting lineup. The newly promoted club gave their fans something to cheer about early as Ben Muirhead's timely chip pass allowed Leroy Lita a chance to blast away at Tommy Lee. Lee misplayed the shot and the rebound bounced away to Dorryl Proffitt and he slipped it into the open net. Orient started applying continuous pressure on the Bristol City backline and evened the match when Matthias Franz deflected a Bojan Djordjic corner past Schlosser for his 1st Orient goal. Orient then wasted little time moving in front as Danilo Arrieta made a brilliant cross to the near post from the right corner and Marco Borriello overpowered Otsemobor to head it past Schlosser. Orient maintained their pressure in the second half and finally clinched the match when Djordjic ran down a loose ball and passed to Borriello. Borriello wheeled and launched a rising shot past Schlosser to clinch the 3-1 road victory.

***

"I was really pleased with how well everyone is stepping into the lineup and playing," stated Drabek.

"It makes a difference when you know there is a chance you will play- that you won't rot away on the bench," replied Field.

Leyton Orient (4) Bolton (0)

Orient- D.Arrieta 7,16,40 R.Calliste 42

Bolton- None

MOM- Danilo Arrieta, Leyton Orient

Not even an early redcard could derail Orient as they surprised Bolton with continued aggressiveness in an impressive 4-0 win. Ryan Garry drew a redcard in the 5th minute of play for pushing over Ryan Wilkie and will likely see an extended ban. Instead of buttoning up and defending, Orient went to a 3 man backline with Carl Laurie serving as sweeper and stayed aggressive offensively. It paid huge dividends as Orient scored right away to gain the lead. Michele Marchese made a nice head ahead of a long kick and Danilo Arrieta immediately sent the ball on for a quick moving Ramon Calliste. Calliste took the ball on the run to the left side from his right side and behind the play Arrieta moved in to fill on the right. Calliste gave Arrieta a perfectly lofted short cross and Arrieta got to the ball before Nicky Hunt to head it past Jussi Jaaskelainen for the lead. Orri Freyr Oskarsson stepped in front of a Massimo Donati pass for Kenny Nolan and sent Arrieta away on the left side. Arrieta beat Jaaskelainen cleanly inside the left post from 20 yards to make it 2-0 Orient. Bolton tried to pressure Orient, but Sebastien Frey was steady in handling their long shots. Arrieta completed his hat-trick when Darren Ambrose sent a corner to him as he was lurking outside the area. Before Bolton could close on him he scorched a low 25 yard blast past Jaaskelainen. Arrieta then outhustled Wilkie on a loose ball and sent a long, curving cross into the center. Calliste outleaped Hunt to deflect the ball past a despondant Jaaskelainen as the 10 man Orient side went to halftime leading 4-0. Orient buckled down and played the second half in defensive mode as they worked hard to help Frey to another clean sheet in the surprising win.

***

"We really are on a roll," grinned Field.

"Beating them with 10 men- with few of the regulars playing- yep, I would say that a roll sums it up quite nicely," smiled Drabek.

Leyton Orient (5) Dinamo (0) Champions Cup phase 1 Group C

Orient- D.Poole 11,41 J.Torhallsson 37,51 M.Etherington 88

Dinamo- None

MOM- Johann Torhallsson, Leyton Orient

Leyton Orient dominated visiting Dinamo in easily handling them 5-0. The win insures Orient a place in the 2nd phase of Champions Cup play. Orient outshot Dinamo 19-2 for the match and started the scoring early. Lee Sims threaded a pass through two Dinamo defenders and Johann Torhallsson squared the ball perfectly for David Poole to boom a cannon shot past Robert Sertic before he could react. Orient added another superb team goal when Sims outleaped Drazen Mlinar to flick on a long Jan Evrard free kick to Danny Byrne. Byrne made a quick move and crossed to Johann Torhallsson. Torhallsson had an easy time tapping his header into the open left side of the net to make it 2-0. Stephen Pearson was the architect of the next goal. Pearson dribbled past Niko Kranjcar and as Andre Mijatovic stepped up to challenge him, he flipped a pass by him to David Poole. Poole, who Mijatovic had been marking, had plenty of time to choose where to slip the ball past Sertic for his 2nd goal of the match. Pearson's superb awareness setup showed as he found Torhallsson lurking alone just inside the area. Torhallsson fired a low shot past Sertic inside the near post for his 2nd goal of the match. The last goal of the match was just another example of hard work paying off. David Fox sent a ball into space in the right corner. Orri Freyr Oskarsson, subbed on for Poole, outraced two defenders and sent a high looping cross to the center. Goce Sedloski missed getting a head on the ball and Sertic couldn't grab it. It wound up with Matthew Etherington who had an easy tap into the net to finish off the 5-0 win. In other Group C action, PAO kept Lyon winless with a 2-0 victory- which means PAO and Dinamo will square off with the winner moving on as 2nd place finisher in the Group (Dinamo a point ahead, match is in Athens).
