1886–1919: Changing names

On 1 December 1886, munitions workers in Woolwich, now South East London, formed Arsenal as Dial Square, with David Danskin as their first captain. Named after the heart of the Royal Arsenal complex, they took the name of the whole complex a month later. Royal Arsenal F.C.'s first home was Plumstead Common, though they spent most of their time in South East London playing on the other side of Plumstead, at the Manor Ground. Royal Arsenal won Arsenal's first trophies in 1890 and 1891, and these were the only football association trophies Arsenal won during their time in South East London. In 1891, Royal Arsenal became the first London club to turn professional.

Royal Arsenal renamed themselves for a second time upon becoming a limited liability company in 1893. They registered their new name, Woolwich Arsenal, with The Football League when the club ascended later that year. Woolwich Arsenal was the first southern member of The Football League, starting out in the Second Division and winning promotion to the First Division in 1904. Falling attendances, due to financial difficulties among the munitions workers and the arrival of more accessible football clubs elsewhere in the city, led the club close to bankruptcy by 1910. Businessmen Henry Norris and William Hall became involved in the club, and sought to move them elsewhere.

In 1913, soon after relegation back to the Second Division, Woolwich Arsenal moved to the new Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, North London. This saw their third change of name: the following year, they reduced Woolwich Arsenal to simply The Arsenal. In 1919, The Football League voted to promote The Arsenal, instead of relegated local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, into the newly enlarged First Division, despite only listing the club sixth in the Second Division's last pre-war season of 1914–15. Some books have speculated that the club won this election to division one by dubious means. Later that year, The Arsenal started dropping "The" in official documents, gradually shifting its name for the final time towards Arsenal, as it is generally known today.

1919–1953: Bank of England Club

With a new home and First Division football, attendances were more than double those at the Manor Ground, and Arsenal's budget grew rapidly. Their location and record-breaking salary offer lured star Huddersfield Town manager Herbert Chapman in 1925. Over the next five years, Chapman built a new Arsenal. He appointed enduring new trainer Tom Whittaker, implemented Charlie Buchan's new twist on the nascent WM formation, captured young players like Cliff Bastin and Eddie Hapgood, and lavished Highbury's income on stars like David Jack and Alex James. With record-breaking spending and gate receipts, Arsenal quickly became known as the Bank of England club.

Transformed, Chapman's Arsenal claimed their first national trophy, the FA Cup, in 1930. Two League Championships followed, in 1930–31 and 1932–33. Chapman also presided over multiple off the pitch changes: white sleeves and shirt numbers were added to the kit; a Tube station was named after the club; and the first of two opulent, Art Deco stands was completed, with some of the first floodlights in English football. Suddenly, in the middle of the 1933–34 season, Chapman died of pneumonia. His work was left to Joe Shaw and George Allison, who saw out a hat-trick with the 1933–34 and 1934–35 titles, and then won the 1936 FA Cup and 1937–38 title.

World War II meant The Football League was suspended for seven years, but Arsenal returned to win it in the second post-war season, 1947–48. This was Tom Whittaker's first season as manager, after his promotion to succeed Allison, and the club had equalled the champions of England record. They won a third FA Cup in 1950, and then won a record-breaking seventh championship in 1952–53. However, the war had taken its toll on Arsenal. The club had had more players killed than any top flight club, and debt from reconstructing the North Bank Stand bled Arsenal's resources.

1953–1986: Mediocrity, Mee and Neill

Arsenal were not to win the League or the FA Cup for another 18 years. The '53 Champions squad was old, and the club failed to attract strong enough replacements. Although Arsenal were competitive during these years, their fortunes had waned; the club spent most of the 1950s and 1960s in midleague mediocrity. Even former England captain Billy Wright could not bring the club any success as manager, in a stint between 1962 and 1966.

Arsenal tentatively appointed club physiotherapist Bertie Mee as acting manager in 1966. With new assistant Don Howeand new players such as Bob McNab and George Graham, Mee led Arsenal to their first League Cup finals, in 1967–68 and 1968–69. Next season saw a breakthrough: Arsenal's first competitive European trophy, the 1969–70 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. And the season after, an even greater triumph: Arsenal's first League and FA Cup double, and a new champions of England record. This marked a premature high point of the decade; the Double-winning side was soon broken up and the rest of the decade was characterised by a series of near misses, starting with Arsenal finishing as FA Cup runners up in 1972, and First Division runners-up in 1972–73.

Former player Terry Neill succeeded Mee in 1976. At the age of 34, he became the youngest Arsenal manager to date. With new signings like Malcolm Macdonald and Pat Jennings, and a crop of talent in the side such as Liam Brady and Frank Stapleton, the club reached a trio of FA Cup finals (1978, 1979 and 1980), and lost the 1980 European Cup Winners' Cup Finalon penalties. The club's only trophy during this time was a last-minute 3–2 victory over Manchester United in the 1979 FA Cup Final, widely regarded as a classic.

1986–2018: Graham to Wenger

One of Bertie Mee's double winners, George Graham, returned as manager in 1986. Arsenal won their first League Cup in 1987, Graham's first season in charge. By 1988, new signings Nigel Winterburn, Lee Dixon and Steve Bould had joined the club to complete the "famous Back Four" led by existing player Tony Adams. They immediately won the 1988 Football League Centenary Trophy, and followed it with the 1988–89 Football League title, snatched with a last-minute goal in the final game of the season against fellow title challengers Liverpool. Graham's Arsenal won another title in 1990–91, losing only one match, won the FA Cup and League Cupdouble in 1993, and the European Cup Winners' Cup, in 1994. Graham's reputation was tarnished when he was found to have taken kickbacks from agent Rune Hauge for signing certain players, and he was dismissed in 1995. His permanent replacement, Bruce Rioch, lasted for only one season, leaving the club after a dispute with the board of directors.

The club metamorphosed during the long tenure of manager Arsène Wenger, appointed in 1996. New, attacking football, an overhaul of dietary and fitness practices, and efficiency with money have defined his reign. Accumulating key players from Wenger's homeland, such as Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry, Arsenal won a second League and Cup double in 1997–98 and a third in 2001–02. In addition, the club reached the final of the 1999–2000 UEFA Cup, were victorious in the 2003 and 2005FA Cups, and won the Premier League in 2003–04 without losing a single match, an achievement which earned the side the nickname "The Invincibles". This latter feat came within a run of 49 league matches unbeaten from 7 May 2003 to 24 October 2004, a national record.

Arsenal finished in either first or second place in the league in eight of Wenger's first nine seasons at the club, although on no occasion were they able to retain the title. The club had never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of the Champions League until 2005–06; in that season they became the first club from London in the competition's fifty-year history to reach the final, in which they were beaten 2–1 by Barcelona. In July 2006, they moved into the Emirates Stadium, after 93 years at Highbury. Arsenal reached the final of the 2007 and 2011 League Cups, losing 2–1 to Chelsea and Birmingham City respectively.

The club had not gained a major trophy since the 2005 FA Cup until 17 May 2014 when, spearheaded by then club-record acquisition Mesut Özil, Arsenal beat Hull City in the 2014 FA Cup Final, coming back from a 2–0 deficit to win the match 3–2. A year later, Arsenal appeared in the FA Cup final for the second time in a row, defeating Aston Villa 4–0 in the final and becoming the most successful club in the tournament's history with 12 titles, a record which Manchester United would tie the following season. Arsenal later won the FA Cup for a record 13th time, defeating Chelsea 2–1 in the 2017 final and once more becoming the outright leader in terms of FA Cups won. The victory also saw Wenger become the first manager in English football history to win seven FA Cups. However, in that same season, Arsenal finished in the fifth position in the league, the first time they had finished outside the top four since before Wenger arrived in 1996. After another unspectacular league season the following year, Wenger announced his departure from the club on 20 April 2018, after 22 years as manager. His decision was met by responses of praise throughout English and world football from many pundits and former players, who also thanked him for developing them as people. His final home match in charge was a 5–0 win over Burnley where his entrance was met to a standing ovation by supporters. The final match under the Wenger era was a 1–0 away victory against Huddersfield.

Lucas torreira is a beast

Had a 7.77 rating on my 3rd season as a DLP-D (!!!!! That never happened on fm18 lol)

Always my best player.

I wanna try him as Libero in a 343 system. Not to sure if it will work, but that's what a beta is for (for me).

As like FM18, I was able to sign Hazard and Kante from Chelsea.

Slightly unrealistic, but oh well. I shall enjoy Hazard in an Arsenal shirt.

What season? How did you perform in the season leading up to the transfer? What about Chelsea? What fees did you have to pay?

Slightly unrealistic yes, but heck of a lot of fun. Would love to see them in red! 😊

First season mate. Hazard £88m, only £40m up front.

Kante £75m. Again with just £40m up front.

Be disappointed if I don't win the league now.

In:

Gary Cahill  DC from Chelsea  £8.5m
Lucas Paqueta AMC  from Flamengo  £16m  - Bossed midfield in pre-season and scored 5 goals, a really good buy.
Frederico Chiesa Winger from Fiorentina £49m (rising to £67M) - 4 goals in 2 League starts so far!

Josha Vagnoman Full Back from Hamburg £7.5m (rising to £12m) - Versatile and promising full back nearly at 1st team level.

Out:
Jenkinson £3m to Al-Ittihad Jeddah

Balance - £0.

Just about finishing the first season in game, I've not gone Arsenal but I can't help but enjoy their transfer business, They've signed Icardi for £99mil meaning they could play a front 4 of Icardi, Aubemeyang, Lacazette and Ozil ! As well as signing right back Kevin Mbabu from Young Boys for £10.5 mil including all the add-ons which seems a bargain as he's a good all rounder is now only 24 and is valued at £26 mil !

Started my Arsenal now, Signed Lucas Paqueta, Kieren Tierney, Cristian Pavon and Matthias De Ligt.  Hopefully they will slot into my team nicely

What formation are you planning on playing? Hopefully Pavon gives you some much needed width as our squad is lacking in that regard.

I'm starting a new save.  Wanting to play and sign only players that can be homegrown eventually,  Going to keep Ramsey and build around the players at the club.  I know some won't cut it, but the challenge for me has always been developing and getting a full homegrown squad

Hi all,

I am about 10 games into my first season and it's going really well - I'm quite worried about what the full release of the game might do the match engine.

Playing 4141 DM wide as set out below. I have made some signings but in hindsight, wish I had prioritised a LB instead of another CB but hey ho.

Transfers in:

Milenkovic (£15mil)
Vilhena (£15mil)
Chiesa (£45mil - rising to about £65mil potentially)
Marin (£2.5mil)

Currently top of the league and only conceded one goal - whist scoring 17. Highlight of the season so far was being 3-0 up against Burnley inside the first 8 minutes of the match.

GK: Leno (GK-S)

DR: Bellerin (WB-S)
DC: Mustafi (CD-D)
DC: Sokratis (CD-D)
DL: Monreal (WB-S)

DM: Xhaka (AM-D)

MC: Ramsey (Mez)
MC: Torreira (DLP-D)

AML: Chiesa/Iwobi/Welbeck/Aubameyang (although doesn't work well so far) - IF-A
AMR: Ozil/Mkhi (AP-S)

CF: Auba/Laca (AF-A)

Team instructions wise we use a 'make your own' but is probably closest to the gegen-press instructions. With the ball, Ozil/Mhiki comes well in off the right wing which can create a 5 man midfield (Ozil, 2WBs & 2 MCs) but with Xhaka as AM providing a passing option and defensive security.

The forward then pushes right up front, which I was worried would leave them isolated, but actually seems to create space for the midfield.

Only slight issue so far is that I am struggling to get much out of whoever plays in the AML position - might need a bit of tweaking still.

26 PL matches into my beta save, and it's going reasonably well. Sitting in 2nd only 3 points off Liverpool. Won 18, drawn 6, lost only 2, scored the second-most goals (51) and conceded the least (17).

My tactics could be described as a hybrid of the possession and gegenpress presets we find in FM, but it's ever evolving. As good as we are defensively, we struggle up front, otherwise we could well have turned some of the draws into wins.

I kind of am too attached to the Arsenal to just get rid of everybody and do my own thing, so I'm playing with some extra challenges: make Torreira/Xhaka work and make Auba/Laca work. TorXhak worked pretty well, BUT: Guendouzi is doing exceptionally, so I decided on roles in midfield that don't really suit Xhaka. So I decided to loan him out to PSG and got Emre Can in on loan instead. I will have to decide at the end of the season if I keep Granit around as a sub, or if I cash in.

Laca/Auba: Meh. Tried a variety of roles, nothing seems to really click. Auba is doing okay, tried him as a Raumdeuter to get im running off the ball more than dribbling with it, but actually IF(a) works better. Laca just has foot cancer or something. He just doesn't score enough and fluffs a lot of chances. I tried about every role available as well, nothing really makes him shine. He's a CF(a) for the time being. Maybe once Reiss Nelson is back they have to share responsibilities up top. I can't seem to make both work.

Best playsers rating-wise: Torreira, Bellerin, Sokratis, Guendouzi.

Traansfers: None bar Tierney. Didn't get any budget in winter (while every other team bought all of the wonderkids, thanks for nothing board), used wage budget to barely make Tierny happen.

My XI:

Leno SK(s)

Bellerin/Niles WB(a) - Mustafi/Holding BPD(d) - Sokratis/Kos CD(d) - Tierney/Kola WB(s)

Torreira/Douzi DLP(d) with tackle harder - Douzi/Ramsey BBM(s)

Iwobi/ESR W(s) - Özil/Miki Treq(a) - Auba/Welbz IF(a)

Lacazette/Nketiah EVERY ROLE

You put AM twice for Xhaka. I am assuming you meant DM?

Oh yeah of course! Not the role I’d expect for Xhaka. But if it’s working, fair enough.

It seems to work well, as he just sits there and passes simply. In my opinion, he's massively over rated on FM19 - he has 19 for passing....

Hirving was a touch on the mercurial side in FM2018 so it will be interesting to see if he's more consistent in FM2019.

Can't say it enough, Cahill is available for less than £10m at the start. Still classy at 32 and miles better than any of the current defenders. Home Grown too. I didn't even have to think about it.

in my second season playing 4-4-1-1 geigenpressing: (and doing very well)

Leno

Bellerin Sokratis Manolas Hector

Mahrez (IW) Torreira (DLP) Allan (B2B) Brandt (W)

Fekir (AM)

Aubameyang (A)

I've got rid of Cech, Ozil, Xhaka, Mustafi, Wellbeck, Monreal, Holding, Elneny, Ospina, Jenkinson, Asano, Chambers etc

bench: Lacazette, Gelson Fernandes, Nacho, Maitland Niles, Koscielny, Mkhitarian, Ghendouzi, Ramsey, Gomez (loan), Nelson, Iwobi, Kolasinac, Nketiah. Signed some goalie just for his leadership skills, I forget his name

Xhaka did very well when called upon but his positioning is pony, can't be having that

No room for Ozil's laziness either. Not for 350k a week.

Wellbeck scored a hatful in first season as an inside forward but the 4-1-2-2-1 didn't work, lost too many away games. Had to bring the wingers back to a flat 4 midfield so Wellbeck had to go...made room for Brandt who is a BEAST

Allan and Torreira fit the bill for me big time, both great at tackling and passing, shields the back 4 whilst keeping posession

I need is a striker who has aubas characteristics, fast, and good at finishing, but ideally someone young. At the moment I am torn between getting Werner, or giving Eddie Nketiah a go upfront,(as auba might start to decline soon)

so any help or ideas are welcome!

(Also suggestions for fullbacks that develop well within 2 years would be good as well!), as monreal is gettting on a bit.

Also, personally I am going into my second season and have bought a few beasts,

Almiron(5mil)-honestly this guys acceleration is amazing, I think he is a long term replacement for ozil!

Lozano & Pavon(10mil each)-They both offer width and speed on the wings, but I am not sure I needed both, as iwobi and Smith-Rowe are performing very well(I got rid of mkhitarian as soon as possible)

Rajkovic(3mil)-just a backup, as I sold Ospina.

Personally, I really wanted to buy joao felix, dias or gedson fernandes from benfica, but they were insisting on 50mil for each, even though they wanted to leave! So had to settle without.

Anyone able to sell ozil in first season? Or during second season onwards?

No. Had to let him go on a free (to some American club)

Bit bizarre no one would take Ozil for next to nothing

I sell him because I dislike his style of play. While I have had some success in the beta with him, he forces me to play him due to the wages. I do not like his workrate , bravery etc and prefer other types of players.

What you describe there is a non pressing creative player that when on the ball he performs well. If yous et up with a hard working MC line and play him at AMC line he will perform wonders. Bergkamp was similar however when he did run and put himself about it led to a foul or a card as he couldnt tackle.

Ozil is on the highest wage at the club, will be hard to rid of so i would advise play him and build the team around him.  You can also train him to try and improve his WR. A WR of 11 isnt too shabby tbh, that would be enough to press in the final third. Ask him to stay in the final third and dot ask him to defend you will be fine and will reap the rewards. With passing, vision, flair, OTB, fist touch & technique, of 19, and anticipation, composure, of 18 why would you want him doing anything other than creating?

Why sell him? Play him behind the SC and he will perform wonders.  If your trying to sell he will be difficult due to his wages and the loyalty bonus arsenal would have to pay.

Is that in theory, or did you actually play him and make him work wonders in Fm 19? If so, how? For me he had a super disappointing season, which might be down to my poor tactics though.

Starts with Theory, then practice which you need to understand the roles and how they affect the tactic. It all comes with experience ;)

Cahill will be too slow within a year

That's fine, I'll have money to buy quality defenders in summer 2019.  £8.5m will bring experience and quality to the back line when it's desperately needed. The more pressing concern was a quality wide-man/dead-ball specialist.

Hi

In to my 2nd season now.

In the first I won every competition.

Players In
Summer; Arp 17.5, Paqueta 14.5 (19), Tierney 17.5 (24.5) (paid him 60k wages so I dont understand that other guy who spent his whole wage budget on him), Luis (SLB wonder kid) 12.75, Gonçalo Cardoso 76k, marin 4 and de ligt 23.5 (31)

Winter; Duarte Valente 1.4, Jasper Schendelaar 2.5 (5.5), Josha Vagnoman 6, Keanan Bennetts 5, Francisco Trincão 1.3 and Pelayo Morilla 950k

Players out
Summer; Cech 10.75, Jenkinson 1.9, Monreal 11.25 (14) and Welbeck 10.25 (16.25)

Winter; Kolasinic 21, Liichstiener 1.3, Movraponos 3.7, Bramil 20k, Elneny 20, Martinez 4.2 (5.25) and Holding 6.25 (7.5)

I Started playing 442 narrow diamond

                                   Leno, sk

bellerin wb, de ligt bpd, mestafi bpd, Kosal wb

Elneny dm (Torreira was injured in case someone is hurt)

                  Ramsey rpm    Paqueta apm

                                      Ozil E

                            Aub af          Laca cf

It got results but the full backs were being murdered and the crosses werent coming in so after a month i changed to a direct pressing 4141

                                        Leno SK s

Bellerin FB a  De Ligt BPD d  Mustafi BPD d  Teirney FB a

                                        Torreira DM s

Iwobi IW a     Ramsey DPL s      Ozil APL s    Smith-Rowe IWa

Aub/Laca PF a   (whoever wasted less chances)

Smith-Rowe Marin and Iwobi are Diamonds use the regularly. Ozil is actually pretty good won player of the season, I knew from last fm i couldnt sell him so ive decided to play him. I still cant get rid of mkhitarian and his and ozils wages make everyone else want more which is really annoying.
I always play Positively, pressing game comes with the risk of injuries and near the end of season it's a struggle and rotation is a must.

Playing this game since CM01/02, thanks. Great he's doing wonders for you "in theory" though :brock:

I go back farther than that ;) Good old Domark.

With this incarnation tactics, mentality and transitions are a whole different ball game to FM18 let alone back in the day of 01/02 when everything was very very simple.

Keep chipping away and making small adjustments and my advice is watch the ME on comprehensive highlights to work out what is going right and wrong with your tactics that isnt getting the best out of Ozil. Look at Ozils positioning and where he is receiving the ball and more importantly what he is doing with it, you will be surprised. Understanding your tactic and what players are doing what in each phases of play will give you a better understanding and will help you improve players roles and instructions.

I thought about getting Arp for around 10mil, still undecided, he has a good u21 record in Germany, but I am not sure if he is worth 10mill,

has he progressed better than Nketiah for you?

Yeah Nketiah barely scores, sent him on loan twice Blackburn jan first season, aston villa summer of this season (prem) hes been very average to poor. Arp gets quite a few goals, not good enough to be a starter but very good back up. give him easy games to get him into a bit of form. Theyre both inconsistent, I only kept Arp in jan because I want him homegrown.

That might be me :D

What I meant is I had to reallocate wage budget as the board didn't give me any extra transfer money.

Thats good to know, so I still have to find a replacement for Auba, instead of relying on youth, when he starts to downgrade.

Did any of your youth players actually develop much, or progress, I am trying to give willock ,maitland-niles,smith-rowe and mavropanos a chance;

But dont want to risk the league for their development.

smith-rowe is actually amazing 2nd best winger behind bailley in my 2nd season, niles is a utility man willock wasnt developing and mavropanos has been sold.

But remember a lot of these youngsters have minus potential so they vary from save to save.
