The World Cup Final was hit by pitch invaders in the 52nd minute.

Four spectators simultaneously ran on the pitch and interrupted play in global football's showpiece match.

Dejan Lovren attempted to drag one of them to the floor as stewards ran on to the pitch to deal with the interruption.

Political protest group Pussy Riot claimed responsibility for the invasion on social media shortly after the spectators ran on the pitch.

The invaders were all dressed in the same uniform and appeared to come from the same area of the stadium.

Pussy Riot are a Russian feminist protest punk rock group based in Moscow.

They are known for pro-LGBT rights and opposition to Russian president Vladimir Putin .

In a lengthy Facebook post following the pitch invasion, they demanded "free all political prisoners", "stop illegal arrests at rallies" and "allow political competition in the country" among other things.

It seemed to affect Croatia more than France, with Dider Deschamps' side striking twice in the aftermath of the invasion to go 4-1 up.

Theres an argument that Croatia were so put off by it, it helped france score their 3rd and 4th goals. Still, punk rockers are going to punk rock at the end of the day.

I said at the time it was clearly staged.

If one person runs on the pitch, it could easily be they were a bit drunk, or just caught up in the atmosphere and grandeur of the occasion, but when 4 people all invade at the same random time it was clearly something staged.

Wonder what will happen to these 4 people who have so openly opposed Putin. Wonder if they just disappear...

The line of stewards in the second half was amazing. I'd love to know where they all came from at such short notice.

also: was there a downfall in tweets because of it
