Resurrecting a Fallen Angel in Belgium: Royal Léopold FC

Royal Léopold FC was founded in Brussels in 1893 as Léopold Football Club and was one of the founding members of the KBVB. Considered a club for the aristocracy and nobility, the club played in the first division for the first 17 years of its' existence (18 overall), but has not reached the top level of Belgian club football since the 1913/14 season. In 1900, the club represented Belgium in the Olympics, earning a bronze medal.

Léopold Football Club, ca. 1896

From 1919/20 to 1925/26, the club played in what is now the Proximus League, before dropping down to the lower levels of Belgian competition, never to return again. Two seasons at the third level from 1931 to 1933, and another season at the third level in 1951 is the most success the club has seen since then. The club has bounced around recently, largely competing in the Vierde Klasse (fourth division) since the early 2000s. Following Belgium's league structure reorganization in 2015/16, the club competed in the ACFF A League of the Derde Amateurklasse in 2016/17, which is now the fifth division of Belgian football.

Over the years, the club has merged several times and undergone several name changes, merging with Circle Sporting Racing Uccle in 1982 to form Royal Léopold Football Club D'Uccle, with Royal Uccle Sport in 1990 to form Royal Uccle-Léopold Football Club, with Royal Circle Sports La Forestoise in 1996 to form Royal Uccle-Forestoise-Léopold Football Club, and with Royal Circle Sports Saint-Josse in 2001 to form Royal Léopold Uccle Forestoise. Following a name change to Royal Léopold Uccle Football Club in 2005, the club briefly went by Royal Léopold Uccle Woluwe Football Club following the team's relocation from Uccle to Woluwe in 2013. They currently go by Royal Léopold Football Club.

The goal for this save is to bring Léopold back to the top of Belgian football, before ultimately conquering the Champions League and Club World Cup. It will not be youth-only to begin with (I can't even tell if my youth team plays competitions) but if at any time I am a professional team or in the top two levels of Belgian football, I can only bring in players who would be considered homegrown in UEFA competition when they turn 21 (i.e. under 18 when they arrive at the club). During times when other transfer activity is allowed, I am only allowed to bring on players with Belgian nationality. I'll be starting as a Sunday League player with no badges, and will have to earn those on my way up as well.

How Does the Derde Amateurklasse Work (in FM)?

2KiUtiL.png

I put this together to help explain how the Derde Amateurklasse works in the game. I'm using claasen's editor files, and it differs slightly from the real-life format of the league.

The division is made up of four 16-team leagues, two under the VFV (Flemish side of the KBVB/URBSFA) and two under the ACFF (French side of the KBVB/URBSFA). Each league plays a 30-match round-robin. The champion of each league is directly promoted to the Tweede Amateurklasse, and enters the Champions Playoff to determine the overall winner of the division. The 2nd-5th-placed teams in each division enter a Promotion Playoff against each other, with the winner earning promotion.

On the other end of the table, the three lowest-ranked teams in each division are relegated to their respective provincial leagues, while the 13th-placed team faces the other 13th-placed team in their organization (ACFF/VFV) in a relegation playoff. The loser is relegated to the provincial leagues, while the winner stays up.

2017-2018 Recap

I'm just going to do a quick recap of the 2017-18 season since I've already played it and I just wanted to get through it.

Team Overview

When I came into the job, we had four real players, the rest were players added to the DB by the game. These four players were Guy Keh Morel, Nicolas Van de Walle, Diego Inacio Ribeiro, and Stéphane Odimboleko. All were extremely skilled for the division, but they were all on big part-time contracts that I couldn't afford. No one else at this level could either, making them impossible to move. I decided at that moment that I was going to throw finances into the wind for this season, and go for promotion in season 1, knowing that I would likely not be able to resign these players next season. I typically play in a 4-2-3-1.

Goalkeepers

ZE1aMd7.jpg?1

Came to us from division opponent Couvin-Mariembourg in the summer transfer window. Had 9 clean sheets in 25 appearances.

kokBjUY.jpg?1

Dual Italian national, came from RJS Taminoise, who play in the VFV A league, in the summer transfer window. Had 1 clean sheet in 5 appearances, mostly when I didn't want to pay Mallet's appearance fee.

Defenders

HUNm6wH.jpg?1

Dual Ivorian national, spent time at RWDM, Standard Liege, KV Mechelen, and La Louviere Centre before joining Leopold. Capable of playing every position on the left wing, as well as striker (super helpful). Had 6 goals in 28 appearances, unfortunately got suspended for yellow cards twice (one of which really hurt, more later).

PDlJhjP.jpg?1

Spent time at both Anderlecht and Club Brugge before dropping down to RWS Brussels and ultimately Leopold. Capable of playing all along the back line, started 33 matches and averaged a 7.05 rating.

w2svi9w.jpg?1

Dual Moroccan national, came from Merelbeke, who play in the VFV A division, in the summer transfer window. Started 27 games, averaging a 6.91 rating.

e6BBE4W.jpg

Joined from Dikkelvenne, who played in the VFV A division, in the summer transfer window. Started 31 games, scored 3 times, averaged a 7.03 rating.

UxVjwFo.jpg?1

Trusty backup fullback capable of playing both sides of the field. Joined from Kampenhout, who played in the VFV B division, in the summer transfer window. Made 14 appearances, averaging a 6.83 rating.

Midfielders

17LmOPn.jpg?1

Joined from Kampenhout along with Merckx in the summer transfer window. Started 30 games, scoring once, assisting once, and averaging a 7.07 rating. Completed 80% of his passes.

6iZbNNX.jpg?1

Joined from Diest, who play in the VFV B division, in the summer transfer window. Made 29 appearances, scoring twice and assisting 8 times. Averaged a 7.37 rating. Completed 78% of his passes.

UgU5v0v.jpg?1

Joined from ACFF B side Herstal in the summer transfer window. Mostly appeared as a sub, making 20 appearances, scoring and assisting once.

Attacking Midfielders / Forwards

oIQrrmq.jpg?1

Odimboleko came to us from RWS Brussels, and was honestly too good for the division. Made mincemeat of the division, scoring 28 times in just 22 appearances. Was severely hampered by injuries, which really affected the team late in the season. Overall scored 32 in 25, added another 4 assists. Averaged a 7.72 rating.

rJLYkfu.jpg?1

A dual Brazilian national and Standard Liege youth product, Inacio Ribeiro never made it with the club and has bounced around the lower levels since 2014. Was our talisman for most of the season, starting 32 games, scoring 14 goals and tallying a stunning 24 assists. Averaged a 7.79 rating. Led the league in assists.

KBhz98S.jpg?1

Came from VFV A side Mariekerke in the summer window. Made 31 appearances, scoring 5 goals and adding 6 assists. Averaged a 7.36 rating.

6OAQOAk.jpg?1

Joined from VFV A side Wolvertem Merchtem in the summer window and made a huge impact for us, scoring 19 goals and adding 11 assists in 29 appearances. Averaged a 7.74 rating.

Had a fantastic season by most accounts, but unfortunately fell short towards the end of the season with Odimboleko out with injuries, finishing fourth in the league and bowing out in the promotion playoffs semi-final. Disappointing to an extent because I sat first after 9 different matchdays. Made a huge mistake towards the end of the season, starting Keh Morel in what was ultimately a meaningless game. He picked up his 10th yellow of the season, which caused him to be suspended for the last regular season match as well as the semi-final against La Louviere. Without a backup striker option, I was impotent against them and crashed out.

I set league records for biggest win (8-0 vs. Spy at home on 9/9/17), highest scoring game (W 5-4 vs. Couvin-Mariembourg at home on 10/1/17), and most goals scored (84). Odimboleko and Inacio Ribeiro led the league in goals and assists, respectively, and Odimboleko set a league record with 7 goals in our 8-0 drubbing of Spy at home.
