Mario Fernandes (CSKA Moscow)

Mário Fernandes is the one who famously rejected a Brazil call-up in 2011, when he was at Grêmio.

Need a World Cup countdown thread tbh until the proper WC Forum is opened.  One month to go

England squad is coming on Wednesday apparently, it's a 23 + standby list rather than a bigger squad that then gets reduced down.

If Lovren doesn't end up in prison after the farce in court today. :D
Would be hillarous if he missed CL finals because of the trial. Both him and Modrić. And fair.

Of course they won't

Brazil will be the only announcing the proper 23-man squad while everyone else is announcing their preliminary squads.

Iceland confirmed the squad you have listed as the 23 man squad for the world cup

Brazil squad:

Selecao_lista2_14052018.jpg

The squad is more or less as expected but I would change at least 3 players:

- Vanderlei (Santos) or Marcelo Grohe (Grêmio) instead of Cássio (Corinthians)
- Arthur (Grêmio) instead of Fred (Shakhtar)
- Luan (Grêmio) instead of Taison (Shakhtar)

A cool stat:

Only six Brazilian national team players called up for the 2014 World Cup have been called up for 2018 World Cup as well:

Marcelo, Thiago Silva, Fernandinho, Paulinho, Willian and Neymar

Completely forgot, but how wasn't Miranda invited back then? Atletico played in CL finals and he was amazing with Godin.

That stat shows why Brazil is performing so much better than Argentina. They realized that many older players got plenty of chances and failed. While Argentina is still clinging on the likes of Mascherano, Biglia, Perez, Aguero and Higuain.

Yes, Miranda should have been in the 2014 WC, Dante (awful), Henrique (ok but not NT level), David Luiz (overrated) and Thiago Silva were the four centre backs.

As for Argentina, I think their pool is smaller than that of Brazil, so it's harder to revamp the squad every WC like Brazil often does.

Yeah, it's smaller, but it's not like 32yo Biglia and 35yo Mascherano can provide much.
Aguero and Higuain got plenty of chances and never delivered. They even got booed by their own fans.
Neither Dybala or Icardi never got a proper chance, just an odd game here and there.

True, but I suppose the frequent change of managers has not helped them either with the call ups.

Both him and Felipe Luis were completely snubbed back then.

Renato Augusto is the 5th player who is not based in Brazil/Europe that is called up for the World Cup:

2018
Renato Augusto - Beijing Sinobo Guoan (China)

2014
Júlio César - Toronto FC (Canada)

1998
Dunga - Jubilo Iwata (Japan)
César Sampaio - Yokohama Flugels (Japan)

1994
Ronaldão - Shimizu S-Pulse (Japan)

(Leonardo joined Kashima Antlers from Japan on 1 July 1994, so he can be counted or not depending on the criteria used).

Gundogan and Ozil apparently upset a lot of people and facing a reprimand from the DFB after meeting with Turkish despot Erdogan and calling him "[their] President". So if this escalates I wonder what the chances are of them being left out the German team.

Germany's goalkeepers (and squad tbf) is just ridiculous, each of their expected 3 keepers is better than England's 1st choice.

Not been keeping up to date with Serie A really or know much about Brazil these days, but why no Alex Sandro in Brazil squad? Injured or just not liked? I think I'd prefer him to Filipe Luis.
