FM 07 Football Club Name of the Day: Ocean Boys (Nigeria of course)

Their logo seems to be a bird using a tractor beam to steal the football of a fish that just wanted to play.

"Ocean Boys FC of Brass". Apparently the club is made from an alloy of copper and zinc.

Problems of taking over a new club #267

I take over Man City and the core of the team are veteran players (32, 33, 34, 36 y/o) who are declining rapidly. Plus, all of the midfielders have picked up the same PPM "gets forward whenever possible" which means the defensive transition is fun to watch :)

Just had this lad arrive in the youth intake. I'm thinking of pushing him into becoming a winger rather than a striker, but what would you do with him?

Depends on how much that pace would grow, whether I'd be happy with him as a winger, maybe an inside forward?

Could be a good AMC too, but would also need plenty of work there.

Sega ****ing Ngom

Probably my best ever result on Football Manager.

EDIT: Also reached 'the future' for the second time ever in a save where I don't holiday untill today. It's something.

Cheers for that. Happy enough with inside forward too, I'm just looking to get him some match time as he's too good to waste. We are overloaded up front at the moment, and going forward we'll only be using one striker.

I'd still say he was more of a striker.

Yeah that should be his primary role, but the relatively low anticipation and composure put me off continuing down that path I guess.

My save is really starting to slow down, taking ages to process even a few days and its making me not enjoy the save as with limited time I only play 3 or 4 games in an evening.

Think its time for a new save, last one before FM19 comes out.

A post from 2009 seems to have saved my story.

I got an error trying to save, but I went to the options and ticked to compress save games and it's saved.

So a save of 2GB seems to be the cut-off point. If so, it should last a long while yet with compressed saves... it'll just take 10 minutes to save a game...

Just had a look at a couple of my older long term saves, and I *think* my outgoing record is €34.5m (although I was managing in Norway) and the most I've spent is €23.5m from my Dutch save. I *may* have spent more on an old Inter save, but I really can't remember. The numbers above are truly mental, but then so is the game at the moment!

Neymar's transfer sum from Barcelona to PSG was bigger than the GDP of the six smallest countries. Mental is exactly the right word.

Terrifying. From a different perspective, if I'd bought a season ticket at 4th tier Notts County this year, it would have cost £400/€445. It was £255 under a decade ago. I'm probably three or four years off taking my kids to games, I reckon that price will increase by 20%+ in that time.

I remember the LLM Zealot Online Clan game on CM01/02 where we reached the 2040s. I had progressed to manage Tottenham in the Premier League. The most I had ever paid for one player was around £12,000,000 and I went and smashed that by paying a then mammoth £45,000,000 Argentina striker. He helped me win the Premier League and Champions League for the first ever time on any CM game.

Did it again the following season, got bored and moved to Yeovil in the then Third Division. :D

Odd coincidence as I did kinda the same in FM 07. Managed Tottenham up to the 2030s, buying the first £50m, £75m and £100m players  on the way to several leagues and a couple of Champions Leagues, then moved to Brighton in League Two.

Man City have a documentary out on Amazon, but the original one from the 1981 was pretty engrossing and has crazy insight and bizarre/funny behind-the-scenes events.

It starts with Malcolm Allison, a cigar-smoking Clough-a-like about to get sacked.

We get to see the bizarre job interview (featuring the chairman flipping his matchbook from boredom) with the eventual next manager John Bond, who is pretty much Roy Hodgson.

We also see Bond's first introduction to his new squad and him Hodgson-ly going through the rules and all the ways you can get fined in a direct copy of The Simpsons' That's A Paddlin' speech.

Though it would turn out it would be a very good appointment for City.

Meanwhile, Allison has gone back to Crystal Palace, who he would get relegated by the end of the season. But first, Man City draw Palace and Allison in the cup.

So we get to see the dynamic there, ending with a passive-aggressive Bond gloating right next to friend and former team-mate Allison at a 'press conference', claiming he needs to be on a leash and he's not scared of him any more.

BTW the 'press conferences' involve a few reporters standing around the manager's desk with a notepad while sipping wine.

Here's just the job interview and introduction to the squad:

Inspired by some threads on here (namely those by @ManUtd1, @noikeee & @Makoto Nakamura) and want to do a journeyman for FM19. But I don't want to plod along from job to job, I want to have a goal. Already thought of trying to bring glory to the Red Bull sides and had winning the Champions League with sides that have lost to Real Madrid in finals suggested.

Anyone got any other ideas, this will be my only save for FM19?

Start unemployed and try to win the national league titles in the Nordic countries: Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. I did this back in the FM16 days and it was indeed my only save of that year. You can have a look here if you want.

My favourite ever save was in Norway, and I managed to turn a little club from north of the Arctic Circle into the biggest club in Europe.

The league restricts you to 9 foreign players which means you have to concentrate on youth, either from your academy or by signing players of 18 and under to become homegrown, or you have to seriously consider who you buy. You also have to sell players because there are limited funds even after European success, which means the save maintains a challenge over time.

By any chance did you write about that save?

I did, although I'd used photobucket for images... and then they lost their minds by pulling all images unless people paid $400 for them!

Here's the link, if it's at any way useful:

I know what you mean about developing an attachment for the club, I developed one organically to this club which simply grew as I continued. I would recommend you don't pick one of the country's traditional "big" clubs at least, as overthrowing them becomes the first challenge.

You reminded me of this, so I looked up how it went...

https://www.bizjournals.com/denver/news/2018/05/17/photobucket-drops-pricing-that-angered-millions.html

tl;dr: The CEO who led the idea is gone, Photobucket has reverted millions of links back to showing the images, and reduced the $400 p/a pricing to $54 p/a.

Which is still laughable, never mind that everywhere else is free.

Damage is already done. I use Imgur now, until that goes under in 10 years, then I'll use Imagebook or whatever comes next.

And historically to really get into a save I have to develop an attachment to a club, how would I do this say in Norway as @withnail316 and @Rikulec suggested

To me that tends to happen automatically when I spend some time at a club in a country I don't have any relation to. I (loosely) follow teams IRL only because I once managed them on FM... :D

I go further and would like to actually visit Busan/South Korea after I had managed them. I used to imagine it was just a poor man's Japan, but it turns out it's one of the best places to live.

I enjoyed finding visual porn photos of Busan for my story thread. It seems if you wanna live in a cyberpunk city it's a choice between Tokyo, Seoul or Dubai.

Not really got into a save this year as haven’t had much time due to working all hours god sends! 😩 had a nice game with Lincoln City in 2018-19 season they had finished 2nd in League 2, and had £1m budget I set to work and had a really good squad and was P4 W3 D0 L1 in the league. I then played Leicester City away in the League Cup expecting a battering but we played magnificently and won 3-1 unfortunately this would be a premature end to the game as I had forgot to save the game and let my daughters play roblox on my laptop and they turned off the game 😡🤬

After this I played around with a few teams but then loaded up the save starting in season 2 and just let things ride for a few months,

I came across Darlington 18th in the National League North, with their manager insecure  but results had picked up a bit for them so I decided to take over and see what I could do I set up in a 4-1-4-1 wide dm I believe fm called it. Playing a AML as IF and AMR as Winger with an advanced forward up top. We continued in a rich vein of form and should have won all of our games upto now but we dropped 2 points against runaway leaders Chester away even though we battered them! We just couldn’t find the net more than once. That form has seen us fly from 18th to 7th just 2 points behind 2nd place and last night we played at home and had 20 shots of which 7 were on target but only 2 converted. but only conceded 2 shots with a long range shot on target in a dominant performance. Also on the run we encountered MK Dons flying high in League 1. Going 1-0 down early on was worrying but we pulled back to 1-1 before my right back was sent off for 2 bookable offences on 20 minutes just 2 minutes later we found ourselves a goal down but then the lads rallied and we won a penalty which my DM who had to drop to RB converted. Not long after that we were in front for the first time in the match after a nice break and that is how it stayed for the remainder of the game as we held our nerve against wave after wave of MK attacks. For that result we were the first name out of the hat for round 2 and drew Northampton also of League 1 at home so I am hoping for some progress there and hopefully one of the big boys away!

I am starting to look at the squad a bit more in depth now I’m getting more into the game and currently have 2 CB’s in on trial who were released by Middlesbrough last season and am also looking for at least 2 CM’s and a deal to sign striker Bradley Fewster should be concluded shortly as I feel Harvey Saunders isn’t quite ready even though he made an explosive start for me with 5 goals in 3 matches before tailing off and Mark Beck who has been poor since his return the worst display he missed an open net Ronnie Rosenthal style after the opposition keeper just palmed a back pass to him around 16 yards out.

i am hoping this save will have some legs for me and that I can take Darlington back into the Foothall League

In true FM fashion, I can't decide who to be, what country to start in or what sort of save to make it. A couple of weeks, itching to play FM and it comes to it and this dilemma. Got the whole day at work to try and make some sort of decision on what to do.

Can't go wrong with Italy.

I'll have a look at some clubs tonight, avoided managing in big leagues on this years FM except England of course.

I looked at Israel, Malaysia, Australia and Wales last night but just couldn't find a club for that right blend.

Geez i'm having a terrible lack of ideas to use on FM. I want to play it but if i'm just gonna delete the save after a few bad results, what's the point?

Countries i'm most interested at the moment are Malaysia and South Africa as I never managed in those countries before and maybe I could combine it with the Ultimate Challenge.

Will read it if you make a thread about it. Both countries have potential in that the finances should not be too bad so you could build something in the long haul. South Africa may have an initial advantage due to the talent pool and football importance I suppose.

I prefer South Africa in the aspect that it's more straightforward competition wise, while preferring Malaysia due to it's obscurity and interesting but manageable mechanics. Thanks for joining along if I do ever make a thread about it. Not sure if I will though.
