Work Permit Information

Recommended Posts

I have just kicked off the 2019/2020 season in Sky Bet League 2 with Boreham Wood FC. In the game, the United Kingdom has now left the European Union meaning a couple of rule changes to signing foreign players (I can't remember the exact message and I can't find it in my inbox). During pre-season (after the UK had left), I signed a few players on free transfers - 2 French, 1 Moroccan and 1 Gambian.

Once those contracts were agreed, they started to go through the work permit application stages with all of them being rejected initially and then rejected again after appeal (which I kind of expected) where it mentioned about applying for them again in 120 days. This was fine as this has happened before however this time it's a little different.

I can play these new players (who haven't obtained a work permit) in competitive matches and there is no small red 'WP' symbol next to their names on the squad screen. I'm just a little confused as to why they went through the work permit applications to then get rejected to then be able to play in competitive matches anyway. I was wondering if someone could just explain this a bit more to me. Will there be a point where they can't actually play?

You can check the work permit conditions under the 'rules' tab of the league.

Regarding the fact that you can play these players without a WP, maybe it's because the news item announced changes for the future, and the current season isn't yet applying the Brexit rules.

I checked the league rules but all it says are what is in the screenshots. From what I gather, this is saying that they DO need a work permit to play (I'm sure i'm not reading this wrong). You may be right when you say that the rules don't apply yet.

I'm getting the work permit problems now.

It didn't in previous saves. You used to be allowed a max of 17 foreigners and the work permits were no hassle.

Only thing I can think of is the latest update? I don't know if that changes things or not.

I have the same issue as Gooner9315. I just started to manage Southampton in 2020 and was informed that Britain had left the EU so new players coming from the EU to the EPL would need work permits. The rules for the EPL also clearly state this. I signed a young player who had failed the application (even on appeal) and meant to loan him until he satisfied the requirements. I did not get to loan him and now noticed that he is eligible to play in the EPL (i'm still in August 2020).

It seems a bug to me (not that I complain in this instance...)

Can a mod (or SI) clarify whether this works as intended and we are not understanding this correctly or whether this is a bug?

The 17 foreign players one tends to depend on which league you're in - I believe it applies to the Premier League and Championship, but the leagues below still have a work permit system.

It's worth raising the issue in the bugs forum (if it's not already been raised) as it sounds like the game is getting confused when different leagues in the same country have different work permit rules - work permit rules are being applied when signing a player but not being checked for the comp, I haven't got to Brexit in FM18 yet but in FM17 the Football League used the FGN player limits like the Prem does even though the game said it would use WP so a similar thing might be happening in FM18?

Also is it league games or cup games that the players can play in? If it's cup games it might be the game struggling to handle different teams being subject to different rules?

Thanks for the feedback! I'll get in touch on the bugs forum. @michaeltmurrayuk - It's in both league games and cup games. They've played the majority of my matches in the current season.

The more I read, along with the feedback I get, it does sound more and more like a bug.

Yeah sounds like a bug then, albeit an advantageous one, though you might have a couple of issues going forward as I don't think players can renew contracts without a work permit, and I also think you need a valid work permit to pick up a British passport, so I wouldn't go stocking up on them.

Got a an issue where I’m in league one and have signed a Polish player on loan. Brexit has happened and it’s the 17 foreign player max outcome.

He’s got the little red WP icon and it says his WP needs renewing, Ive loaned him from Stoke. He didn’t have this icon when he was still at Stoke.

There is no option for me to do anything here. No drop down. Nothing. Is it a bug? Are the rules different for league one and below? Is all a bit confusing.

Thanks for any help.

He wouldn't have the icon at Stoke because he had a work permit with them. The work permit rules can be different between leagues in the same country, you'd have to check the rules listed for your league.

Thanks for the reply.

Is frustrating that the programming allows a loaning club to loan out a player that has a potential WP issue then. I had no information before signing the loan to suggest this would be a problem.

Normally a scout report would highlight wp issues.

Edit* Have checked the league. No difference to the WP system in the rules as far as I can see.

I'm guessing that Stoke are in the Premier League, which is a league with player registration and therefore players do not require work permits. You're in League One which doesn't not have player registration and therefore players require work permits.
