I would like to thank both OCD & Claassen as both have contributed equally to this challenge.

Season 1 Overview

image.thumb.png.7f6f43ee3af1cb5129e079a66ac5e4f3.png

The Kiribati National Football Stadium has never hosted an International fixture due to the fact that the playing surface is sand.

Kiribati League Structure:

  • Four groups of five teams
  • One game between teams per season
  • Top four teams from each group qualify for the First Knockout Round
  • Bottom team from each group is relegated.

My first job:

Beru - an Island Council football club on Beru Island.
- Just over 2,000 people live on the 18sq.km spit of reef sticking out of the ocean, and it's quite a long boat trip to the stadium on the main island.

My predecessor's record:

59f4a90443408_Beru-LeagueFixtures.thumb.PNG.b9768396c4253348323193436c22ba27.PNG

59f4a8fc6f88a_Beru-League.PNG.e1c132068a8bd8225f8ae0c0e845e643.PNG

Just about enough for qualification to the next stage of the competition, but not good enough for the board.

There was a long wait between my application and a decision being made. So much so that Beru's First Knockout Round game was played without a manager, almost four long months after the sacking:

59f4ab5b8b7b8_Beru-Knockout.thumb.PNG.09c30890a37d119b8638c122f55c7158.PNG

Eventually, they must have been desperate, but who am I to complain? My first job and I'm already in the Quarter Finals of the league.

Key players:
A striker with finishing of 5 and A 16yo left back with no attribute above an 8 were our two stand-out players. Yes, seriously.

59f4ac85e1a22_Beru-Pomeroy.thumb.PNG.697e3a42ac2eb47ef0b6260dbf433e8c.PNG

59f4ac8aa4355_Beru-S.Longue.thumb.PNG.db7f8135a6d9a7e788110ab250fea687.PNG

We defied the odds twice, but ultimately we weren't good enough in the Final.

59f4acc5ca203_Beru-MyFixtures.thumb.PNG.a85ce2c1ed90f15292912c701251a495.PNG

Two very even games in the Quarter and Semi Finals with our clinical finishing being the difference, but after being up against it all game, we had no reply to a 75th minute goal from a set piece. Silver medals this time round.

It's alright though. Winning the league in 3 games would have been way too easy.

Season 2 Overview

Switched up our style of play and smashed it in the group stages.

59f62162e024f_Beru-LeagueFixtures.thumb.PNG.496d3fccdc58d7aa5b8fe98581352425.PNG

With help from our new star man, Mackin.

But as soon as we reached the Knockout stages, our game was more tentative and we paid the price:

59f6216e7470a_Beru-Knockout.thumb.PNG.22a96b7e580591e47b2e935777523af3.PNG

Our squad is very, very young and a lot of development has to happen pretty quickly before we can be a force.

Season 3 Overview

59f623245fcbc_Beru-LeagueFixtures.thumb.PNG.c85ad1b8bbdf925e478cb5c5f4025a52.PNG

A 1st minute goal, cancelled out by a 90th minute equaliser.

A 2-goal lead squandered.

A comfortable 2-0 win.

An uninspiring stalemate.

= One worried manager come the Knockout Stage.

And rather unsurprisingly:

59f6245379df0_Beru-Knockout.thumb.PNG.fc91c406409c81efccc44a9210b57195.PNG

An abysmal result and performance and the worrying about form turned into worrying about my job status.

Season 4 Overview

11 points from the next 5 games or the sack.

To help us meet the target set, I have brought in two attackers - who worked up one hell of a partnership. Meet Beru's new starlets:

59f62a7a6e5a6_Beru-Tobin.thumb.PNG.bd2fd87ca63f8b949af1eb21c7583268.PNG

59f62a805da16_Beru-Nav.thumb.PNG.293e7ca1834cf178bd48211e6f9edeb4.PNG

And with these two tearing up defences, not only did we manage to meet the objective (just!) - we went on to win the league!

59f62a16d0fa4_Beru-League.PNG.5c017e7f314e8c7d654baf07997426de.PNG

Our group form wasn't the best though. Admittedly their were a few jitters to start with -

- Our previous star striker, Pomeroy, now playing for Nonouti levelled the first game in the 91st minute.
- A 92nd minute winner from us in the next game in hindsight saved me from the sack eventually.
- A good win but another stalemate to round off the group stage.

59f62ae03b95b_Beru-LeagueFixtures.thumb.PNG.3e864ecb93b04db95adbc63b6538b90c.PNG

But as soon as we entered the Knockout phase, we didn't look back!

59f62afb63a02_Beru-Knockout1.thumb.PNG.8389296b5f8552bec31b0b66cf96019c.PNG
59f62b0a20e1d_Beru-Knockout2.thumb.PNG.1f9f2662ce482e0c2363e11c1d4c97b2.PNG

The final was an epic game. Early on, it didn't look like it would be our day with missing a penalty and conceding early on. We had to claw our way back into the game until eventually in the 85th minute we ran away with our hands on the trophy.

59f62ba0279af_Beru-Final.PNG.0d2a198198d066d4bb5388ef5deecbb4.PNG

In the 8 matches played to the title, Navunigasau got 6 goals and an assist in the 6 games he played in, but the star of the show Tobin, got 4 goals, 6 assists and 4 POM awards playing in each game from the right wing.

My first success!

Season 5 Overview

So I feel like there's nothing more to do other than dominate in Kiribati with no Continental Qual / Cup to aim for. So this season I'm open to moving on to one of the other 3 loaded nation's.

But, no one faced the sack, and the seasons fly by in these short leagues. Not that I mind another chance to add to my success.

And succeed, we did:

59f639282e920_Beru-LeagueFixtures.thumb.PNG.2f020982aaf65da451d52a466178533e.PNG

Coming back from 2-down to keep a 100% record in the group stage was magnificent to see.

59f6392d18b26_Beru-League.PNG.0facf4b746f7dd64f951ee8023242451.PNG

We needed extra-time in the most even game of our season, before obliterating the competition in the Quarter and Semi-finals.

Beru - Knockout.PNG

Yet again, the final was an epic.

This time for sheer perseverance. Our star striker (Navunigasau) got injured in the 36th minute at 1-1 and we created so many chances but converted none. Then 2 minutes into extra time, we go down to 10-men. But sturdiness and resolve got us through to penalties, where we rode our luck to claim back-to-back titles!

This time there was only one player to mention as he stood head and shoulders above everyone else.

Navunigasau - 13 goals and 4 assists in 8 games. Which is phenomenal considering he missed most of the final!

But, now it's time for me to move forward.

Season 6 Preview

1200px-NMIFA_crest.svg.png

The Women's National Football Team (WNT) and an Under-16's team (NMI U16 National) both compete in the second division.

Northern Mariana Islands League Structure

  • Two divisions with one promotion/relegation place - I've only loaded the top league
  • 6 teams in each league, teams play each other 4 times per season
  • There is also a straight knockout League Cup with all teams from both divisions competing, plus a few other regional teams.

Over the years so far, the M-League has been the most one-sided league of the four by far. KFAS (Korean Football Association on Saipan) have a near 100% record in the league over a 5 season period:

M-League Record
KFAS P100 W90 D8 L2 GF238 GA53 GD185 W90%

It's going to be incredibly difficult to topple that sort of dominance.

But my opportunity comes in the form of newly promoted Sun Palace. They are manager-less after my now predecessor was favoured over me to take over last seasons 3rd place team.

Miraculously, Sun Palace are fresh from claiming a double - winning Division 2 for promotion and also steam-rolling through to claim the cup. No wonder I was second in line to their old manager. Big boots to fill.

To have any sort of chance at clinching a title - not necessarily this season - we would have to get a result against KFAS. Possibly getting ahead of myself, I took a look at the previous meetings record between the clubs and now I wish that I hadn't!

This is gonna be tough!

Season 6 Overview

And tough it was!

Our form against the reigning champions was decent considering Sun Palace had never taken so much as a draw from a fixture against KFAS.

59f87054b8f00_SunPalace-KFASmyrecord.thumb.PNG.a2534190856cc25bcce1203a40c17ef2.PNG

But our overall form wasn't too pleasing and led to this:

59fb5bf2cf6c1_SunPalace-League.PNG.0023e9cd7ff95f89764a5e062430920c.PNG

The final league standings may give the impression of a season battling against relegation, but our league form massively declined at the end of the season, leaving us in a precarious 5th position.

59f87047d5cfe_SunPalace-LeagueFixtures.thumb.PNG.eb038119c46569f6a31c68bb6c7b32b8.PNG

And we were halted pretty early on in the Cup too.

59f8705c12edb_SunPalace-CupFixtures.thumb.PNG.5f202500a7d282270b5ce6ec59b8de3d.PNG

The only player who played relatively well was a forward. Nine goals in 14 apps - not the incredible record like I saw in Kiribati, but decent.

59fb5c69ddc04_SunPalace-YangJae-Sung.thumb.PNG.f715423f86b1f2e967d936fb84d060d5.PNG

All in all though, not a season to get too excited about.

We need to improve drastically, otherwise I'll cast my eyes elsewhere.

Season 7 Overview

A hugely successful campaign saw us run away with the League & Cup double. With massive help from a forward signed from our biggest rivals KFAS at the end of last season:

5a070bbfa8b40_SunPalace-JungJoo-Hyun.thumb.PNG.02706a367d5081d87d90fb539f280c38.PNG

In all competitions he got 15 goals and and 11 assists in 23 appearances, including 2 goals and an assist when this happened:

5a070c76aaea7_SunPalace-KFAS6-0.thumb.PNG.33c93837b1868edd7c8a7af5448d6cc7.PNG

Obliterating the unwanted record of never winning against them after we got a fluky 1-0 win earlier in the campaign. We ended up comfortable winners.

And in the cup we were never really challenged. Interestingly we did go up against WNT (Women's National Team) in the Semi-Finals but FM isn't cool enough yet to allow female players, so disappointingly it was just a load of newgens. We went up against Thundercats in the final, who have been lounging in the Second Division for a long time and blew them apart to claim the trophy.

I've accomplished all I can here, so now I'll wait until a job become available in either in Micronesia or Wallis & Futuna to move on.

Season 8 Overview

A personally short season, with a combined total of 9 fixtures played. (Still not as short as the 8-games it took to become Champions in Kiribati in 2020 though!)

With the temptation of playing in the Asian Confederation Cup I continued with Sun Palace into the new season. But after 5 games - and a 100% record so far - bottom of the league elsewhere sacked their manager. With no prospect of relegation I decided to apply and start a project at my 3rd club in:

Related image

The Under-23's National Team infamously lost 46-0, 38-0 and 30-0 at the 2015 Pacific Games

Micronesia League Structure

  • One division with no relegation
  • 8 teams in each league, teams play each other twice per season
  • There is also a straight knockout League Cup starting with the Quarter Finals

Fanif have actually won the league twice in the last 7 seasons, but recently they have struggled and no more than this season. I took over in 8th place (bottom of the league) with only one win and two draws in 10 games which made it evident that this was gonna be a tough ride.

5a0718a676f71_Fanif-Fixturespre-me.thumb.PNG.7930e326cfc2d256ff424f3b7853f434.PNG

Out of the cup at the first round too meant that the last four games meant no more than consolidation and could be used experimentally to build a foundation for next season. But I was surprised that I managed to convince a few relatively decent players to join in the short transfer window and I also released a lot of players who were never going to be more than backups whose moral could have possibly been effecting the overall morale of the squad. All considered, we finished very positively:

5a071a0452e04_Fanif-Fixtures.thumb.PNG.e60cb4c53a19c4a582af37b0ab48b414.PNG

But still finished bottom.

5a071a165efff_Fanif-League.PNG.606d3c87c23a7651fbe85d620494de36.PNG

Josh Hewitt being the stand out player with 6 goals (top scorer) and an average rating of 6.89 really tells the story of a poor season at a team really lacking quality.

5a071b253d900_Fanif-JoshHewitt.thumb.PNG.8f9ab0af2eb7a88890e837d2885bbdf4.PNG

I guess we can only improve on this season.

Season 9 Overview

We had to settle for 2nd after agonisingly losing top spot on the final day of the season.

5a083ca837a77_Fanif-League.PNG.24b85762fe9f024c0be95065b2ea87c1.PNG

5a083cb5910ef_Fanif-Fixtures.thumb.PNG.13103c00ecf6273d4be4f833aef44844.PNG

The 'score one more than you' tactic cost us in the end. With a few mad games throughout the season, including a 92nd minute winner for the 5-4 against Nanmohs VB, we conceded twice in the last 5 minutes of the final game of the season against ten men and ultimately didn't deserve the title.

The top 5 being separated by 5 points shows just how evenly matched the teams were this season. International (FSM) won the Cup and League double after nipping us to the title and knocking us out of the first round of the cup. So next season they are definitely the ones to beat.

Most of our success was down to a 17y/o who came through the Fanif academy last season and ripped defences to shreds ending with 16 goals and 3 assists in 12 games:

5a083dc7144d2_Fanif-Scott.thumb.PNG.af0a1082ab5b389ad1fb3c2a58afa9de.PNG

Next year we have to win it!

image.png.c5358692b13cf49415aa9cf4ed4edd69.png

Early in the season I was surprised to be approached for the Northern Marianas Islands National job. Immediately I accepted. Then I looked at their real-life ELO rating over the past few years:

Image result for northern mariana national football team

They entered the East Asian Cup in the Preliminary Qualifying Round. Four teams competing in a 3-game league, with only the top team progressing to the Qualifying Round for another four-team league with the winner only making it to the East Asia Cup itself. So I knew we had no chance of getting that far - but I wanted to show some sort of positivity.

But it wasn't to be:

5a0841a830708_NMI-Fixtures.thumb.PNG.6ba4bd1c013c84119e55ce9aafdd6ec2.PNG

We crashed out after not turning up at all. We led in the last game, only to concede a 91st minute goal to consign us to a terrible campaign. After a two-year wait, we will hopefully see a stronger showing.

Wallis & Futuna, at Vaisei, and later at a club in Kiribati I can't remember the name of. Now I actually check the Wallis & Futunese leagues on other saves just to see what Vaisei did. And guess what, they became champion in 2017/18 on my current save in Spain.

Season 10 Overview

With no transfers in - just concentrating on getting the team to work on the 'score one more than you' tactic we came into this season all guns blazing and won the league in 10 games:

5a0846dda418b_Fanif-LeagueWinG10.PNG.0f9189a0406ae0dd89a7bd7cc8bb63b5.PNG

But from this point on, I was really disappointed with our form. We were so close to a perfect season, even beating International (FSM) in the cup Quarters to get revenge for last seasons losses, but we were ruthlessly discarded out of the cup in the semi's and then drew and lost our last two games respectively. The penultimate game we lost the 100% record to a 91st minute equaliser and then the players were already on holiday (and celebrating) by the final match.

5a0848da64fce_Fanif-Fixtures.thumb.PNG.34ff196ad63564f9c0879f81c8f634a8.PNG

5a0848e48ee25_Fanif-League.PNG.93a1c0abe9ffd7b496587e7ebd3487b3.PNG

A brilliant season though. Just a shame we couldn't see the 100% record through.

Daniel Scott got 17 goals and 6 assists in 14 games along the way - taking his total for the club to 33 goals and 9 assists in 25 matches - not bad for 18!

At International level, I decided to take over the U23 squad for Northern Mariana and compete in the U23 Asian Cup Qualifying. With the disappointment with the senior squad last season I had very low expectations, but we did very respectively against some much higher ranked teams and didn't finish bottom of our group (just!) which I see as a huge achievement.

But we're still a long way from any sort of success.

Season 11 Overview

The Micronesian Cup was to become the first competition I had entered (at club level) and not eventually won (I don't know how I feel about this. My OCD has let me down, I thought it was stronger than this!) - as I took the decision to apply to manager-less Vaitupu in Wallis and Futuna during the off-season.

Wallis_and_Futuna_football_logo.png

Wallis and Futuna League Structure:

  • One division with no relegation
  • 8 teams in each league, teams play each other twice per season
  • 4 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 for a loss (why!?)
  • There is also a straight knockout League Cup starting with the Quarter Finals

And Vaitupu have finished in last place in three of the last five seasons. So an overhaul of the set up was required. I brought in some decent strikers and attempted to deploy the 'score one more than you' tactic that I had been so successful with at Fanif last season, but the team really lacked quality and cohesion all season. Trashed out of the cup and a vague bottom-half finish:

5a0852600a027_Vaitupu-League.PNG.86b82159288426a6fafa764e15085963.PNG

The second half of the season we did pick up form a bit - escaping bottom by 3 points! But the board are not too happy and I've had to promise better for next season. (My job status is Very Insecure - 32%)

A young forward and a huge centre-back are our only shining lights from this season. Without these two, we surely would have been bottom of the league:

5a08564888d15_Vaitupu-Canu.thumb.PNG.56b419be12257ef3d8460a957b4946b4.PNG

With Northern Mariana I had the task of getting at least one respectable result to improve on two seasons ago:

5a085859566ca_NMI-Fixtures.thumb.PNG.582a0b984f4fe1adc4181b29751d3d94.PNG

5a08585f175fe_NMI-Group.PNG.b89b0abfa9cfa99e67e42d4cee0ad73c.PNG

We held Macau to a goalless draw but didn't score a single goal, and whilst it was an improvement, I still felt wholly disappointed by the experience. This led to me resigning from the post a month or so after bowing out of the Preliminary Qualifying Round without so much as a whimper.

Season 12 Overview

Tweaking the tactic from 3-3-4 to 3-2-5 and we ran riot in the league in our second season. As underdogs for most games, we surprised teams with our all-out-attack style and walked away with the Double by the end of the season!

Only one loss and only 2 games where we weren't on the scoresheet all season!

But the key to our new found success came in the middle of the park in the form of a Central Midfielder who came through the academy the season before. He held play together and was threading balls through to the strikers and wingers all season. Meet the future of Wallisian football, 17y/o Curutchet (remember the name!):

Man, should've really used that all out attack tactic too. I didn't concede that many goals, I just couldn't find the net myself. Are you adding the second division of Guam as well?

My OCD is not happy with you skipping the 2nd division of the NMI. :(

Nope. I've decided to always just load the top divisions in each nation. That way I can work upwards (in terms of competition reputation) at all times.

It does mean I'll never experience promotion in my managerial career though. Hopefully I can avoid too many relegations too!

Season 13 Overview

a23a19036ac1cd0a5b5ca2ee11c3be48_400x400.jpeg

Guam beat both Turkmenistan and India in their first and second ever World Cup Qualifiers on the road to Russia 2018 gaining a credible 4th in their group.

Guam League Structure:

  • 6 teams in each league, teams play each other four times per season
  • One relegation spot
  • Knockout League Cup starting after the league season finishes with regional and Division 2 teams

Quality Distributors infamously won the Guam top flight with a record of Played 20, won 20 in the 2009/10 season. This was during a huge spell of dominance: in the 6 seasons from 2007 to 2012 they won 5 league titles and 4 FA Cup titles.

In-game QD have been loitering in 4th or 5th since the 2021/22 season and they have sacked their manager, appointed me and expect nothing more than for me to lead them back to titles, trophies and glory.

Scott Spindel holds the record for number of goals in a season with a staggering 42 in the 2012/13 season (for Quality Distributors.) Unfortunately, he has announced he will retire at the end of this season, but here he is still among the ranks:

5a087ac2e4b6d_QD-Spindel.thumb.PNG.0d7bef44665e9e09dc7e5bac3c9892d5.PNG

We were brilliant. The season started superbly:

5a087ea915701_QD-Fixtures1.thumb.PNG.b010749ed26269ed8b11139696339749.PNG

And then I applied to be the manager of Bhutan's U23's for the upcoming U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers. I did this on the 4/2, the day after the Guam Shipyard victory. And from here until the end of the season, Guam Shipyard would be the only team we would manage to beat:

5a087f29e8434_QD-Fixtures2.thumb.PNG.2c93886af7e08c829f99d008aadabe5c.PNG

In truth, I doubt that the two had much to do with each other. But the coincidence did make me question it for a while. But the devastation of being so far ahead only to completely capitulate and lose the title on the second to last day of the season was really agonising. I am still waiting for the day I win a title in my debut season at a club.

5a088db825bac_QD-League.PNG.d0c4e12f97a691282736bc734e19dfbb.PNG

We have a platform to build on for next season though. And there is a special someone joining us on a free transfer in the off-season.

Taking over Bhutan U23's was a decision I pondered over for a while. International management is definitely on the spectrum, and I decided that taking over the U23's would be a good (if not the best) way to end up as the National manager at some point. But it didn't go to plan:

5a088ee311695_BhutanU23s-Fixtures.thumb.PNG.960ab3cc92fc1985ce8e0f7843baa448.PNG

We could (should) have got a better result to start off against the Maldives and then we didn't do ourselves justice after going ahead in the next two games before being blown out of the water by Qatar. The only consolidation I can take is that we didn't finish bottom of our group.

5a088f3ad1f70_BhutanU23s-Group.thumb.PNG.5ea2c84d059b7dd1be9924ebf16066b1.PNG

The results here have really made me question whether I will continue with the U23's or wait for a full International job.

Season 14 Overview

To build on things at Quality Distributors we needed a Deep Lying Playmaker. So I started scouting and through sheer curiosity tried to sign some of the best players I had managed so far. I got rejected by all but one.

5a08cf4242a1f_QD-Curutchet.thumb.PNG.21266cbda732b993106d45f9b0e7434c.PNG                5a08cfbecf394_QD-CurutchetJourney.thumb.PNG.8f7cfe9197a7c7418e945042dc952f12.PNG

Gregory Curutchet, a product of the youth academy and key to my success in Wallis and Futuna agreed to come aaaaaaall the way to Guam. A 25 hour flight according to Google (which is definitely not the case.) But still, it's far to come for non-contract football.

With Curutchet, our starting line up looks like this:

5a08d0c8e95e4_QD-S11.PNG.bd7d56e345c23c60abe7433f023923dc.PNG

And he played an integral role in getting us through the season to claim the double!

We had a squad full of players who contributed. But yet again, a youth product has caught my attention. A 15y/o winger with immense pace - so I threw him straight into the first team and he has 4 goals, 2 assists and 2 POM awards in 9 games with an average rating of 7.61! Definitely one to keep an eye on.

Yep, I'm definitely going to try and keep Curutchet with me when I move to Bhutan.

..which I don't think is going to happen this season (no. 15) so emphasis is definitely on the continental competition!

Season 15 Overview

In Bhutan, the only two teams that cropped up manager-less the entire season were Bhutan U17's and I didn't fancy the impending relegation battle with the 4 non-greyed out players that they had in their ranks, so I made the decision quite early on in the season to stick it out in Guam and attempt to not get embarrassed in the Asian Conf. Cup with Quality Distributors.

And this season turned out to be the longest and most strenuous season so far!

We opened the season with fine form, 4 wins a draw got us to top of the league extremely early on, but then the Conf. Cup Qualifying Round started.

Three HUGE wins to mark our territory in the continental competition was surprising, but glorious. Especially considering on tired legs in the final group game we were 2-0 up, 3-2 down and clawed it back to 4-3 for a 100% record and top of the group!

But our domestic season took a hit. Three days and an exhausted squad later and we lost to bottom in the league.

We surprised Home Utd with a smash-and-grab to get past the Conf. Cup East Preliminary stage, won 1 and lost 1 in the league before turning up in force again to smash our way past Conf. Cup East Playoff to enter the Asian Conf. Cup proper. We were in the Group Stage!!!

This is where the battle really began. With games coming thick and fast, we really came up against it in a season where I think if we weren't playing across multiple competitions, we would have run away with the title early on.

In the Group Stage we were overrun. We battled and were never completely outclassed - we scored in all but one of the group games - but we were minnows, way out of our depth.

And in the league we were struggling to keep up, always on the tail of Cars Plus, who were the surprise package of the season.

The youth intake really helped as we started to slip away at the end of the season. Two stand-out prospects got thrown straight into the first team to cover for tired legs and both got on the score sheet in a resounding 5-0 win which got us back to top of the league with two games to go (and mathematically saved us from relegation on the same day - which goes to show how close this season was!) Then, again, we faltered at the leagues bottom club, coming away with a scoreless draw. Made even more agonising by the fact Cars Plus managed a 91st minute winner in their game to take them back to top. And Strykers had made a surge at the end of the season. They had managed to come back from 3-down against us to claim a credible draw.

But we had Cars Plus as our final league fixture and Strykers played their last match earlier than us and Cars Plus. Which they Won.

This meant that whoever would win in the final game between us and Cars Plus would be Champions. And a draw meant Strykers would claim the title.

A feisty affair with a red card a piece ended one goal a piece and all ambition of claiming another title in Guam was gone. (I shouted at the team a lot this game.)

So 3rd place in the league, knocked out in the group stage of the Conf. Cup. Only one chance of silverware left; the FA Cup.

And how we let ourselves down.

5a0edc41e7762_QD-Cup.thumb.PNG.b3d827296f375d52bb31b40761eb4095.PNG

So an empty handed season after so much work and effort.

A big shout out has to go to Gomez for this:

I don't think I've ever had a player top all 3 statistics before, so hats off to the man for keeping the dream alive until the last day.

Immersed within all of the going's on at Club level, I was offered the Bhutan job. Slightly odd due to my short and unsuccessful stint at the helm of the U23's just less than a year previous, but I was never going to say no!

I took charge of both the Main and U23 teams, but again, found International management completely different in nature.

The U23's took part in the U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers in a tough group, but I felt we should have come away with at least two wins. Our performance against a bad Tajikistan side was terrible, how the game ended with a semi-respectable scoreline I do not know.

But the real intrigue was my first World Cup game.

I was giddy with excitement at entering the World Cup Qualifiers (ASI) 1st Round. We were drawn against Laos who were ranked 178th in the world. So as 180th in the world I was expecting a good, tight game over the two legs.

But how wrong I was.

It was over in 19 minutes.

5-0 down after 19 minutes.

What do you do in that situation? I was scrambling through tactics and positions trying to find something to halt the onslaught and eventually we managed to get some consolation in a 45th minute away goal. Then in the second half, both teams coasted. But I was absolutely shell-shocked.

And it wasn't over. We had to score early on to have any chance of the unthinkable.

And we did. 8 minutes in and we took the lead.

But then an equaliser, a unwatchable own goal and a 3rd thirty seconds later meant we were now blown out of the water. We managed to grab a second, but 8-3 down at half time and needing to score 6, I knew it was over.

We managed to come back to win the game, which was good. But the damage had already been done. I was devastated to have left my first World Cup in such a manner.

A season of overall disappointment. Time to rethink a few ideas.

Yeah, Guam is flooded with brilliant names.

But my favourite has to be Beercelona. It's just a shame they never gained promotion otherwise I may have waited to manage them purely for the title!

Season 16 Overview

After being knocked out of the World Cup, I had a chance to redeem myself at the SAFF Championships with Bhutan. We were up against some decent opposition but in the last two instances of the competition, Bhutan had advanced beyond the initial group stage and into the knockouts, even becoming runners up once. So I had high hopes!

We managed an incredible win against Bangladesh to open the group, but then were unsurprisingly outclassed by Afghanistan. This meant that if we got a win against Nepal and Afghanistan got a win or draw at Bangladesh, we would be through to the knockouts!

Bangladesh went 1-0 up after 2 minutes. This wasn't in the script.

2-0 by half time and still a stalemate in our game!

The only way we would go through now was if we got a better Goal Difference than Afghanistan. 3-0 in both games would do it! So all-out attack in the 2nd half!!!

64th minute and we score!

A 70th minute penalty makes it 3-0 to Bangladesh!

87th minute and we double our lead!

But it's not enough.. We crash out on goal difference to a single goal. A gutting way to go out after two brilliant performances.

Again, disappointment, but at least now we had a platform to build on. But the Bhutanese FA had other ideas. A week later and I was sacked for the first time in my career. Two wins out of 3 not good enough?!

I was livid.

After last seasons shortcomings and my disaster in International management, I continued a little disenchanted with life at Quality Distirbutors. I ended up applying for a couple of Bhutan jobs (reluctantly) but was made to wait quite a while for a reply. In that time we were storming through the league:

5a14743ee3b0e_QD-Fixtures.thumb.PNG.51d292b79323173c98465e8f66686007.PNG

But then an opportunity cropped up.

Bhutan_FA.png

League Structure:

Bhutan Districts Division

  • Five teams, 12 games each
  • No relegation
  • Top team qualifies for Asian Conf. Cup
  • Top 3 teams qualify for Champions Playoff

&

Bhutan Thimphu A Division

  • Eight teams, 14 games each
  • Two relegation spots - these teams face two promoted teams in a 4-team, 3-game league to decide who stays in which division.
  • Top team qualified for Asian Conf. Cup
  • Top 3 teams qualify for Champions Playoff

Form:

Champions Playoff

  • Six teams, 10 games each
  • Top team claims the title!

Newly promoted Thimphu A Division team Tensung lost their manager to District Division team Phuentsholing in pre-season. A team in a bit of a state - but there is plenty of time between date of employment and the first league game, so I went for it!

But what I didn't know is that the Transfer Window had already closed. So I had to make do with a bare squad with a few holes to be able to adapt to the tactics I would usually use. I still scouted around and set up a few decent signings for the next transfer window - which was at the end of the first stages of the season.

We managed a few decent results early on - but with such short seasons, any period of bad form can really hurt you. And 1 win in the second half of the season meant our push for a Champions Playoff spot was resigned to a laclusture mid-table position.

5a14cbb117749_Tensung-League.PNG.82212d9d1c13ad941eb2e9fae1f27cbb.PNG

We were spectators for the rest of the season as 4th-6th do not compete in either the Champions or Relegation Playoff's. So I set up individual training for all of my new signings and got the team prepared with a more familiar (to me at least) tactic ready for next season.

@maxtothemax definitely a good idea! I've got a save-game for the end of each season, so one day I'll figure out some sort of way to track a Best XI.

A couple of seasons to update on from my last post - they'll be coming soon!

Season 17 Overview

After spending considerable time organising the team and tactics in the off-season so we were raring to go - I had not prepared myself for the exile that occurred. TEN squad players left.

So I brought in a few new faces, but the tactical familiarity and all the effort from pre-season was thrown away!

And it showed:

5a27682fa047a_Tensung-Fixtures.thumb.PNG.7ba4bba72c1e658a5af64e7fd39ad737.PNG

5a2768f1ae274_Tensung-League.thumb.PNG.3dd175599ef1c63639f4a8937028df4d.PNG

Immediately after our season drew to a close I was called in by the board and I pleaded for more time to turn this around. I felt we still had a strong core, and some strong results through the season proved that getting a few players in a few key areas (without losing too many) would mean we could push forward.

The board were happy with my promises and looked forward to seeing the improvement.

And then FM kicked in. At the end of the Promotion Playoff (which I was not part of - only 1st-3rd from each league compete in this) I was sacked for not keeping up with my promises!?!

I can only shake my head in amusement and disappointment but I have been sacked as a club manager for the first time..

Bhutan is proving tough!

Season 18 Overview

The keen-eyed among you may have noticed what was next in store for me already:

I am now the manager of Druk Utd. (Highlighted in last seasons screenshots because the season 17 save-game was overwritten!)

I spent only 3 months out without a club before applying and being readily welcomed to Druk Utd, despite my shortcomings the last few seasons. The board do have lofty ambitions though - the last manager lost his post after winning the initial league and capitulating to an eventual 6th (last place) in the Promotion Playoffs. So I have to do markedly better than what I have achieved in Bhutan so far, and more!

But a season of mad, mixed results shows just how tough I'm finding it to get any sort of consistency or form out of these players!!!

Druk - Fixtures.PNG

Made prominent by the comparing the inevitable opening day fixture against my previous employers - where we were 2-0 up and folded to an eventual 4-2 loss - against a resounding 7-1 thumping win against rivals Druk Star even with a red card in the 4th min! We missed out on the Promotion Playoff by a point!

Druk - League.PNG

And to compound the frustration I'm having - this is my highest rated player:

Druk - Gurung.PNG

Gurung got 3 goals and 11 assists in 12 games and is also the player with the highest pass completion (81%) in our team, despite having a passing rating of 1.

To answer your earlier question, I am now on the verge of being fired unless if I get 15 points in the next 5 games. I'm 4 points behind second to last place, so it's going wonderful. Doesn't help our squad is even worse than yours at the moment. Right now, this CM is on hold because i'm doing my own little series here, but I hope to get back into it once I have a lot of time on my hands.
