True, but he was a free transfer.  Very odd that'd he just say "no thanks" to a contract, only to hang out at home playing Xbox for several months.

I bet a lot of clubs paid a lot of money for much worse players in that period of Xboxery.

Piedra on a free transfer is incredible. It also doesn't look like too long before there's an ‘Invincibles’ season in the Allsvenskan.

The 2nd XI is coming along nicely, especially with Piedra coming in to wreak havoc.  Vujovic is still in the 1st XI...for now.

12! Brilliant. Steaua are a tidy side, but I expect you're well beyond them now.

Good luck in CL! Squad coming along nicely, especially in depth.

Thanks, guys -- should make short work of them, but you can't take it for granted (as you both know)...

Re depth, I also signed this guy to take over for Engstrom in the 2nd XI defense.

Took our foot off the gas in the 2nd leg at the Swedbank, but the result was never in doubt.

We're off to Serbia for the Playoffs, against Partizan.  A team we should make short work of, but one that I'd genuinely like to see progress.

Finally, I brought in one more defender and shipped Engstrom out on loan (to be eventually sold).  I figure that between Odongkara and Chansa (see screenshot above), I've very much solidfied the back line of the 2nd XI.

Dominant in the 1st leg, but poor in front of goal.  The tie should have been over after the first 90.  We buried it early in the 2nd leg, but again were not as clinical as we'll need to be.

Seeded 4th again...hoping to avoid Groups C and D...B or H would be ideal...I could deal with F...

Group F it is!  Alright, the goal is to make the Europa League, ahead of Shakhtar who we drew twice, in the 2019 Group Stage.  We've made a lot of progress since then.

You might be able to pull a second place finish there.

Aye, you never know with Roma, they're a good side but can easily be dodgy too.

The optimism is much appreciated, gentlemen. Roma can certainly be erratic... I just don't want to get ahead of myself.

Can't wait to get the Group Stage going. I'm at that point in a save where I feel confident lining up against pretty much anyone. Probably overly so at this particular moment, but the pieces are coming together.

A moment of madness from Umtiti in the opening minutes opens the door at the Swedbank...we can't capitalize but nevertheless snatch an improbable point from the Catalans.

A solid come-from-behind victory over the Ukrainians at the Swedbank...

...I kept thinking that the scoreboard was glitching, but no...this really happened in the day's other Group match...

...leaving us 3 points clear at the top of the Group?!  What the holy heck is going on here?!?!?!?!

The real question being...could we do it on a cold night in war-torn Donetsk?!  Yes.  Yes, we can.

Barcelona remembered how to play, so things are shaping up quite nicely.  We host Roma next, followed by a trip to Spain that will be for the Group if we hold our ground against the Italians.

4 matches in...and only 1 goal against?!  Must be the grapefruit.

I apparently can't count to 4. I blame the Canadians.

What a match...Roma came to play, and there was an incredible 10-minute period in the 2nd half that saw 3 goals and the visitors reduced to 10 men.  No matter how we pushed, we couldn't find a winner.

Barcelona won in the Ukraine, so we're off to Catalonia with a 1-point advantage.  But, we've already qualified for the knockout rounds.  Incredible.

Nicely done! :D Getting past the CL group stages nets such a huge financial gain!

You'll be dominating the Swedish leagues in no time.

Heh.  That's the reality of Malmo FF.  I've spent 30+ seasons in Sweden over the last 3 iterations of the game (including various saves with AIK and Malmo FF, and a successful youth academy CL-winning save with IFK Malmo in 15).  The domestic competition just isn't there.  Once you have a squad or some financial advantage thanks to European football, that's the ballgame.  More often than not, even after holidaying for 2 years, Malmo has that inherent advantage built in.  I came on board just before the summer break in 2018, and we've been utterly dominant.  My predecessor had made some key signings (including one that is still in my 1st XI today, Vujovic).  We even went unbeaten in the Allsvenskan in 2019, before I started relying more heavily on youth.

The big challenge is making a splash in Europe, which we're poised to do :D

Everything's Coming Up Malmö

Malmö FF
2021 Review

What in the actual ****?  The flight back home from Barcelona is surreal.

Not because of the ongoing celebrations, which look like outtakes from the plane scene in The Wolf of Wall Street (without the blow, of course).  Not because we've managed to hold the Catalans scoreless on two separate occasions.  Not because we're into the knockout rounds.  But because we won the Group, playing our brand of football.  Ok, ok.  We backed off against Barcelona, especially at the Camp Nou.  But the table doesn't lie.

Speaking of tables, Brita texted to let me know that there is a great sale on the Grundtal/Norrviken sink base I've been eyeing at IKEA.  I must remember to stop there on my way home from the airport...

Where was I?  Ah, yes.  Progress in Europe.  Dominant at home.  We seem to be on the cusp of greatness.  But, as we fly back north, we're about to enter the darkness of the Nordic winter, which means I'll be faced with numerous offers for key players.  Staggering piles of cash to tempt them away to warmer climes.  This year, at least, I have the Champions League to truly dangle in front of them.  That, and over the summer I began systematically signing players to contracts through 2025 (and beyond, if you count the extension clauses...).   I hope to finalize these renewals over the next few months; I'm not going to them.  No, that would be a violation of the first rule of bargaining.  Let them come to me as offers are rejected and they request new terms.  Then, and only then, will we haggle.  Except over minimum fee release clauses.  No ******* way.

Time for more champagne, I think.

Goals for 2022: Maintain domestic dominance.  Make a run in the 2021-22 Champions League knockout rounds.  Qualify for the 2022-23 Champions League knockout rounds.

Tremendous news from the CFO:

That increase in our reputation is paying off, both literally and figuratively.

In the Champions League draw, I'm hoping for Benfica, Milan or Zenit...

Ancelotti hasn't kept up quite the same pace as Wenger in his final 4 years, but they're a formidable squad nevertheless -- 2nd in the PL, and with a fair amount of recent silverware.  But, if you want to be the best...

I particularly like seeing randomness like Martial being sold to PSG in 2018, only to be sold back to United in 2021.

I love how United sold Saul on at a profit 3 years later as well.

Wheeler dealers.
