PaulHartman71
April/May A strong finish to the season saw us win the league... I was pleased to see Portsmouth join us in getting promoted, especially at the expense of my rivals Forest Green, who Portsmouth beat on penalties at Wembley. Unlucky lads. Maybe next year. PaulHartman71
Season 26: Blackpool Squad The board wanted to win the league and I'm glad I could deliver it after they put their faith and money towards me. It wasn't a sure thing as Forest Green pushed us all the way but in the end we managed to do it. It's another trophy and promotion to add to my CV so I'm glad to have done it. I think we can probably do better in League 2 than I was doing with Salford when we went up anyway. Aaron May the clear standout, he won Conference POTY and finished Top Scorer, with 39 goals and 9 assists in 52 games in all competitions. Iain McHale did well on the right wing with 17 goals and 14 assists, also quite impressive to have been born in 2016 and named Iain. Francis Green was another stand out, with 17 goals and 12 assists for him. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Season Club Division Position Achievements/Other --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2016/17 Ipswich Wanderers Eastern Counties Premier League 8th Eastern Counties League Cup winners 2017/18 Ipswich Wanderers Eastern Counties Premier League 11th Left in November --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2017/18 Coventry Sphinx Midland Football Premier League 13th N/A 2018/19 Coventry Sphinx Midland Football Premier League 10th Left in December -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2018/19 Carlton Town United Counties Premier League 8th United Counties League Cup runners-up. PaulHartman71
Leighton Baines took over Man United mid-way through the season, but what a job he ended up doing. He won them the Premier League and the Champions League, beating Shevchenko's Juventus in the final. Weinzeri left United for Chelsea mid-way through the year but only ended up 3rd with his new side, whilst Arsenal sacked Pepjin Lijnders in February for lingering in 6th place, they then hired old boy and long-time AC Milan manager, Tomas Rosicky, who had no trouble in restoring his old side to the 4th place they occupied during most of his glory days. Doncaster Rovers, led by Jordan Henderson, won the Championship to get back to the Premier League promise land. Leeds United lost in the Playoff final to Aston Villa, who prevented Leeds from returning to the top flight for the first time in just under 40 years. James Milner's Salford City finished rock bottom of League 2 and were relegated from the Football League. Port Talbot won the Welsh Premier League for the 3rd season in a row. In international management news, John Terry is now manager of Gibraltar for some reason.

PaulHartman71
A lot of overhaul this summer. The main departure being Francis Green leaving us for £125K, with the potential to rise to £215K, very decent money for a 2nd striker and helped fund a lot of the arrivals. The key arrival was up-front with Martin Taggart joining Aaron May. Some of you may well remember Martin from when I was at Port Talbot, as in one of our seasons he got 24 goals and 11 assists in 34 games. He left for £85K to join Rothertham back then, he's not really done much since, save for a decent loan spell with Maidstone in the Conference 2 years ago. He was up for grabs in the summer and I jumped at the chance to sign him and help relaunch his career. In defence we gain a young Northern Irishman in Neil Dallas, he seemingly failed to make the grade at Man United but he'll get on just fine for us. Mohammed Messaoudi is an experienced Belgian who has spent much of his career in League 1 and League 2, he's recently been released by League 1 side Luton, but he looks a decent find for a promoted side like us. David Goncalo also joins us in defence, with the 22 year old having been let go by Southampton, but with any luck he should be able to get his career back on track with us. Finally to shore up our back line, we have Albanian Adrian Ferati become our new 1st choice keeper, with the 26 year old having just been released by League 1 Bradford City, where he's spent the last 5 years. In midfield we have Andy Thompson join us, the Northern Irishman had been released by Linfield which seems a strange move on their part has he'd surely be good enough for the Northern Irish League, unless he refused to sign a renewal. A new tricky winger arrives in Ryan Kennedy, who got released by League 1 Brentford, but should be decent for us. The other key first team arrival is Donny de Groot, a 31 year old experienced Dutchman who has seen it all in the English league, he failed to make the grade as a Chelsea Academy player, but then floated around the Championship and League 1 with clubs like Reading, Bristol Rovers, Crewe and finally Grimsby who let him go this summer after 3 years in League 1. Now he joins us and I'm hoping he can do some good things.

BONGOinCoNGO
I like the look of that 'keeper. Looks very good for a League 2 side. You never know, a good start to life in the Football League and you might get poached by a club struggling in the Conference... To Salford and Back(!) PaulHartman71
August An early exit in the League Cup unfortunately, but sadly League 1 Oldham had too much for us. We've had a reasonable start in the league though. The first game was incredible, we were 4-0 up at half time Hereford aren't even that bad a side as they came 9th last season, perhaps they just had an off day or a rough pre-season, but either way it was a great way to start the season. Peterborough were our next victims as we beat them 3-1 away from home, which at the the time put us top of the table. Portsmouth put us back down to earth by beating us 2-0 and then we lost 2-1 to Scunthorpe, so that did put our first two results into perspective a bit, but we have since then managed to get 3 points against my old side Port Vale, with a 3-1 home win against them putting us back up to 5th! I'd be amazed if we last much longer in the Playoff places, but happy days so far
PaulHartman71
September An unfortunate 3-0 loss to Bolton in our first match of the Checkatrade Trophy. Meanwhile, a decent month in the league saw us win two games away to Dartford and Barrow. We lost to Morecambe and Newport County, with the Morecambe loss a bit frustrating as we had a 2-0 lead at one point. We're still just about in the Playoff places, but the league is very tight and there's no way we can maintain our position with the sort of form we'll expect to have. Overall I think if we're winning 2 and losing 2 each month that's pretty decent and should be more than enough to keep us up.
mrdanbartlett
Really good business this summer, to me that is 'proper FM' - a huge clear-out and signings galore after promotion etc. Very good start to the season, I think if you can finish in the top half that will be a success. What are the finances at Blackpool like? What about the attendance figures?

What are the finances at Blackpool like? What about the attendance figures? Finances are horrific. We're about 500K in the red but at one point in the Conference that was £1M, the board pump money in every now and then which helps prop us up. Towards the end of last season we were averaging around 3,750-4,500 for our home games. We got 7,000 in for the opening day against Hereford this year, which has since averaged out to around 5,500-6,000 now depending on how many away fans turn up. There's work to be done to get the fans in but they've had a rough time of it late so you can't blame a lot of the locals for not wanting to turn up in numbers just yet. PaulHartman71
October Another loss in the Checkatrade Trophy, we did try to win it as I thought we could maybe get a result at Port Vale, but they ended up on top in a high scoring game. There weren't many goals in the league this month, but we had a very solid 5 games, with two 1-0 wins, two 0-0 draws and just the one loss to Grimsby at the end of the month. The 0-0 with Hartlepool was probably the most promising result as they're top of the table, we're also the first team this season to go to Hartlepool and not lose. This means that for the time being, we remain in the Playoffs!

mrdanbartlett
Tight table there! Excellent start. Finances don't sound that bad for lower English leagues! PaulHartman71
November We at least beat Wolves U23s in the Checkatrade Trophy, even if we were already eliminated at this point. Taggart and May combined to help us beat Conference side Maldon & Tiptree to progress in the FA Cup. This month was a real test to see whether the first few months were a purple patch or if we were genuinely up to a Promotion bid. It seems we actually might be up to it. 4 wins, 1 draw and a sole loss to Cambridge made for a fantastic November. We came from behind to win at Mansfield and to get a point against Rochdale, which really felt like a catalyst since that was twice we came back from the dead, as after the Cambridge loss it would've been easily for the heads to drop and for us to lose both those games. We sit in 3rd place with a 5 point gap separating us and 8th place. There's still a hell of a long way to go but we're looking like a side who might actually make the Playoffs which is really exciting.
PaulHartman71
December We gave Hartlepool a good couple of games but sadly they beat us 4-2 in the 2nd Round replay to knock us out of the FA Cup. It was an unbeaten month in the league though, with 3 draws and 2 wins, including a thrashing of Burton Albion. There's now 7 points between us and 8th which puts us in a strong position going into the second half of the season. There's 4 points between us and 4th so we could still easily drop out of the automatic places. Cambridge look quite strong and Hartlepool are probably better than us, but I'd be more than happy with 3rd or a spot in the Playoffs.

PaulHartman71
January The new year kicked off and apart from a demolition of Peterborough we've found it hard to win in the league lately, with just 2 wins in our last 7 games. We came from 2-1 down to equalise against my old side Port Vale though, which kept us going, before a 0-0 at Morecambe and an unfortunate loss to Dartford. Despite our sketchy form (by Playoff standards at least) we're still only 4 points off of Cambridge, but Oxford are now just 2 points behind us in 4th, with the gap to 8th now down to just 5 points. There's a long way to go just yet with 16 games and some tough matches, aside from Scunthorpe, we still have everyone else in the top 9 to play. PaulHartman71
February The month started off really well with 3 wins on the bounce against Newport, Barrow and Dulwich Hamlet. Hartlepool gave us a hell of a game in a big promotion 6 pointer, then we lost to 23rd place Preston who are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table. A real blow as I expected an easy win from that one. It's still all to play for at the top of the table with 11 games to go. Oxford are just 2 points behind us and we still have to play them. There's at least now an 8 point gap between us and 8th.

PaulHartman71
This comes in at an ideal time for both parties really. We're doing really well at the minute so it would've been very frustrating if another League 2 or relegation threatened League 1 side suddenly came in for me before the end of the season. The board's expectations are still low, as this new contract they've given me until the end of next season, still only has the target of avoiding relegation from League 2 I've boosted my wage now too: I think I was on around £850/875 at the start of the season due to a promotion clause, so it's not a straight increase from £750 to £1,000. PaulHartman71
March A fairly decent month sees us win all 3 of our home games but sadly lose both of our away games. We're now up to 2nd and just 1 point off of Hartlepool. There's only 2 points between us and Oxford in 4th though and we still have to play them away from home in our penultimate game of the season. There's 11 points between us and 8th so it at least looks like we definitely have at least Playoffs.
PaulHartman71
April A strong April saw us win twice at home and draw twice away, with back-up player, Louis Kwateng, who was only playing due to a slight injury crisis on the wings, popped up with two very important goals to secure us points. And incredibly, with 2 games to go, we have secured automatic promotion and sit top of the table! We have Oxford (A) and Burton (H) still to play. Will be v interesting to see what happens with your career next. Yeah it should be interesting for sure. I think we should have enough to stay up, the initial budgets don't give me great faith that we'll be able to strengthen as much as we did last summer, but if we can get some good loans in we should be alright to stay up. We may get more money in time if we can have a similar rise in crowds that we got from the jump from Conference to League 2, although probably won't see that until the following season if I'm still there. Nobody traditionally that big looks like they will go down from League 1 to League 2 this season (Lincoln, Exeter, Stockport and AFC Wimbledon) so I should hopefully avoid a situation where I get poached down a league, although in fairness that ended up working out pretty well anyway There are some pretty decent sized clubs lingering in League 1 at the minute though, with Bolton, Cardiff, Derby and Charlton all looking attractive prospects if they were to want me at some point. PaulHartman71
May We got a big away win at Oxford, but the title still went to the last day, with Cambridge level on points with us and Hartlepool 2 point behind us. It basically meant that if we were to lose, then we'd miss out on the title if Cambridge avoided defeat or if Hartlepool were to win. Thankfully they both lost Portsmouth went onto win the Playoffs which means they've actually joined us in going up from the Conference to League 1 in 2 seasons. It looked quite bleak back then but think getting the Port Vale job maybe kick started my reputation enough to make the jump to Wales, whilst I got stuck there a while I think the European stuff and title wins helped out big time. 44 minutes ago, Benjoe said: Truly great work, @PaulHartman71! I imagine my next poaching will be from a fellow League 1 side with more money, but I suppose there is always the possibility a Scottish side comes in for me. 23 minutes ago, Rikulec said: Amazing progress in the last couple of years. Could well have been stuck on the Conference/League 2 cycle floating around smaller sides if I'd still been at Salford and possibly gone down. We were helped this season by having the 7th biggest wage budget so in theory we should've made Playoffs, but factoring in freebie loans clubs get perhaps that's not the best way of looking at it. Being able to attract good scouts was probably the biggest factor as it's all well and good having money, but no good if you can't get the right players. Thankfully my scouts did the business for the most part!

PaulHartman71
Season 27: Blackpool Squad The board's aim was to stay up, so I think it's fairly safe to say I achieved that. Our wage budget was in the top half of the league, so to go up again is not as big an achievement as if I'd done it with Salford, but I was still really happy to have gone up from the Conference to League 1 as back to back champions. I thought we did alright in the cup competitions considering the teams we got drawn against. Martin Taggart and Aaron May scored the goals to help take us up, with the Northern Irishman getting 33 goals and 14 assists in 52 games in all comps, whilst the local boy May got 23 goals and 14 assists in 50 games. Andy Thompson in central midfield is worth a mention too, as he did very well and popped up with some key goals and assists. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Season Club Division Position Achievements/Other --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2016/17 Ipswich Wanderers Eastern Counties Premier League 8th Eastern Counties League Cup winners 2017/18 Ipswich Wanderers Eastern Counties Premier League 11th Left in November --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2017/18 Coventry Sphinx Midland Football Premier League 13th N/A 2018/19 Coventry Sphinx Midland Football Premier League 10th Left in December -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2018/19 Carlton Town United Counties Premier League 8th United Counties League Cup runners-up. PaulHartman71
Markus Weinzeri left United halfway through last season and many doubters laughed at his choice to go to Chelsea, but he's had the last laugh this season as he took Chelsea to the title. Leighton Baines replaced Weinzeri mid-season last year and became the first British manager to win the Premier League and Champions League since Fergie's retirement, but in his first full season he could only take United to 5th, so he was sacked. He was actually replaced by Man United old boy Darren Fletcher, who's spent the last 5 seasons at Roma, where he's won a Serie A and a few Italian Cups. The Champions League had a rare non-English final, although it was Old Trafford that played host to an El Clasico final that sawLuis Enrique's Barca side ultimately victorious. Everton had a year to forget as they came a superior goal difference away from being relegated to the Championship. It was a good year for Essex as both Colchester and Southend United won promotion to the Championship. Also, in Welsh news, Wrexham finally got promoted from the Conference, whilst TNS won their first Welsh Premier League title for 7 years.
