[FM16: Interactive Experiment] - It's an International Game

Challenge time - predict the results!

In a Lawro style point per result and 3 points for the correct score, have a go at these sixteen fourth round games. There'll be goals, I can promise you that... No draws remember! Pick the team, and pick the score (including penalties). Games that go to extra time will be treated as that being the final score after 90 minutes - but you have to predict correctly if penalties will be involved.

Wait what

Northern Mariana Islands? Micronesia? (on the FM version I'm playing, 2012, Micronesia doesn't even exist :D)

Did either of those 2 ever reach the second round?

Only noticed Micronesia on there the other day - after they were featured on BBC irl last year. It'd be great to see them do something.

Dave - am I right in saying Micronesia are only involved in the knockout cup and the Pacific Games? I'd love to see them in the World Cup.

Not even close - not a glimmer of a win between them. In fact they've only scored one goal between them in ten Knockout Cup ties, when Micronesia lost 5-1 to Kyrgyzstan (which is a lot better than they're capable of in real life, as Dan pointed out).

And sadly yes, they don't have full FIFA membership so can't take part in the World Cup... Shame

I figured that was the case - I didn't know if you'd changed the FIFA membership at all!

For experiment purposes, if I win any more - I'm focusing on Micronesia. It's a great indicator of which varying factors have the greatest impact on the international game - who better to experiment on than the team at the bottom right?

2020 WORLD KNOCKOUT CUP - Fourth Round

2020WKC4R.png

Massive performances from Sierra Leone and Belarus to earn their first ever ranking points - huge for their nations. Ireland and Paraguay also guarantee their first ranking points with their wins, while the likes of England, Brazil and Germany win ties which could have proved very tricky for them.

In terms of the challenge - the results are as follows:

Cardiovascular - 20 points (14/16, Algeria-Ireland, Sweden-Germany, Spain-Ecuador)

sherwinriga - 19 points (15/16, Belgium-Norway, Spain-Ecuador)

grianaig - 19 points (13/16, Ukraine-Bulgaria, Paraguay-Montenegro, Sweden-Germany)

schubat - 16 points (14/16, Argentina-USA)

@brenosantos - 16 points (14/16, Spain-Ecuador)

swooperproop - 15 points (13/16, Congo-Georgia)

levigu - 15 points (13/16, Paraguay-Montenegro)

David Corperial - 15 points (15/16)

Taunton - 14 points (10/16, Algeria-Ireland, Sweden-Germany)

Jakarooney - 14 points (12/16, Paraguay-Montenegro)

SuperDan! - 14 points (14/16)

dynaboyj - 14 points (14/16)

fiz - 13 points (11/16, Algeria-Ireland)

SoSolidSnake - 13 points (13/16)

thomas_e - 13 points (13/16)

jtiessen - 12 points (12/16)

So Cardiovascular - please let me know the position, nationality and starting club that you wish the customary WKC youth superstar to have.

Also, how have Aruba/Bonaire/Curacao/Suriname been doing? Any second or third round success for them?

Aruba - reached the second round for the first time in 2020, after a 3-1 first round win in Tahiti.

Bonaire - also reached the second round once, in 2019, after beating Kiribati 2-1.

Curacao - definitely the most successful Dutch-Caribbean side, reaching the second round three times, but losing to Italy (twice) and the Netherlands themselves.

Suriname - second round in 2017 after a win against Réunion.

Sint Maarten (for good measure) - also made it to the second round once in 2017 after beating Gibraltar.

I figured that was the case - I didn't know if you'd changed the FIFA membership at all!

For experiment purposes, if I win any more - I'm focusing on Micronesia. It's a great indicator of which varying factors have the greatest impact on the international game - who better to experiment on than the team at the bottom right?

Couldn't agree more!

Any luck for any middle developed nations (Top 81-150) aside from the 32 even the Philippines? Brunei would shock any weak team I would see!:D

The likes of Curacao, Lithuania and Myanmar (among others) have all done well in either the WKC or in qualifying for their continental tournaments.

Excellent! I'm torn between giving Myanmar someone following their 2019 Asian Cup success or continuing the Georgia rival... but I think I'm going to go with the former and give Myanmar a central midfielder who plays for Yadarnarbon.

Done! Their success has instantly inspired the youth (well, this one at least):

2020 WORLD KNOCKOUT CUP - Fifth Round

2020 WORLD KNOCKOUT CUP - Quarter Final

2020WKCQF.png

Big win for France on penalties against the Brazilians - they've still not lost a game in this tournament over 90 minutes. Belgium won in Buenos Aires to leave Argentina trophy-less for yet another season. Paraguay stunned Germany in a fantastic game, and have earned a semi-final match with Spain, who coolly dispatched Ukraine to keep their bid for their first honours since 2012 alive.

2020 WORLD KNOCKOUT CUP - Semi Final

2020WKCSF.png

Well, France hadn't lost a game over 90 minutes until now, being bettered by Belgium. Paraguay matched Spain all the way, and although they ultimately lost on penalties, can be very proud of their campaign.

2020 WORLD KNOCKOUT CUP - Final

2020WKCFinal.png

What a game! Belgium took an early lead through talismanic striker Romelu Lukaku. However, from that moment on, Spain were dominant - led by man-of-the-match Juan Mata, they raced away from Belgium to finally win the title their star-studded line-up deserved.

Quickfire challenge: Which former Premier League midfielder and children's author (and with an A* in GCSE Latin) is the oldest active player, who will be 42 when his current contract expires?

(I'm never sure if I make this guesses too easy or too hard with the clues I provide...)

Link to post

Well I know Frank Lampard has written childrens book, but is he the world's oldest active player? He's 37 I think, surely NYCFC didn't give him a 5 year contract?

That's my best guess anyway.

Edit: Damn looks like I was beaten to it. Unless we're both wrong haha.

Yep - both right! Look at those pace and acceleration stats... I reckon Mertesacker could outsprint him.

2020Lampard.png

But thomas_e was of course first to get the guess in, so earns the reward.

Which is to improve the player generation ability of any nation you see fit. The statistics that may be improved are show below:

2015WKCReward1.png

Any three of these may be increased (or in the case of "Controversy", decreased) by a single level (ie. from "below average" to "average"). If "Youth Rating" is chosen, a 25 point increase may be bestowed. In addition, all teams in that nation's top league will get a 500 point boost in reputation.

Link to post

Is it correct that I can choose an increase in "Youth Rating" as well as two other statistics? If so, I will choose to increase the "Youth Rating" of Norway. I would also like to increase "Adaptability" and decrease "Controversy". Cheers!

Yep, that's it! Done.

Loving that Ed Miliband lookalike - shame he's opted for England rather than his second nationality!

Fortunately I'm back at work from Thursday so updates will probably be at more appropriate times for you!

2020 EUROPEAN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

2020EuropeGroupsABC.png

2020EuropeGroupsDEF.png

2020EuropeKnockout.png

Tough for Georgia and Scotland, who missed out on the knockout stages by virtue of a single goal each. There were no surprise casualties in the group stages, although Croatia will feel aggrieved to have gone home early. France and England were shocked in the second round, while Denmark had a brilliant run, with two penalties victories and a thumping win over the Czech Republic, themselves on a good run. However, Italy proved too strong in the final, absolutely rolling Denmark over.

Really good to see Solomon Islands in the final - has the extra youth rating made much of a difference at all? The only lost to NZ twice and won the rest so that's optimistic.

Great to see Georgia getting better!

I guess it's hard to say so far as they've not actually produced any youngsters since who are in the national team. But I expect it bears some relevance to the quality of the "greyed-out" players, so I would think it might have done!

PLAYERS - END OF 2020

2020Caps.png

Messi only four caps away from the top now and he'll surely make it, still at 33 and near the peak of his powers. Michael Bradley is still going strong for the USA, but only 2 caps for Andrés Guardado, who hasn't yet retired and seems determined to earn more caps. Sneijder has retired, however.

2020Goals.png

No more goals for Suarez or Oliech as they retire, and although Rooney is still available for England, at 35 and playing for DC United in the USA it looks unlikely. Aguero, Dzeko and Hernandez are still going well in the top 5, as Messi approaches 100. He'll do well to beat Daei though before he retires. And ominously, 28-year-old Neymar has made the list, with years left in him. Expect him to go all the way to the top.

2020Stars.png

Neuer has dropped off now too, with fellow German Felix Passlack taking his place. Other than that, and Messi's slight CA decline, there's no real change from last year.

2020Youth_1.png

Disappointingly, no youth prospects this year worthy of the list. Matthew Neal re-makes the list after Guimaraes hits 22.

2020CSEYouth.png

A couple of big transfers here - Kvarthskhava moves again, only staying in Moscow for a year before moving onto Juventus. Surely he's destined to be the world's best player before long (although excluded from the main list as a CSE-created player). Andrea Niccolai moves domestically, to Juve's rivals Torino, so that could be fun to watch. Lexton Olivar has finally made a CA improvement as he seems happier at his new club, while there are no major changes other than CA boosts for other players.

2020StarsOther.png

Neil Carr surges onto the list in the only real change from last year. He's also moved to Roma from LA Galaxy - Serie A soaking up all the good youngsters. Ferati also moves from Stuttgart to Wolfsburg on a free.

2020YouthOther.png

A few new faces on the list; potential pick of the bunch being Canadian-Italian Riccardo Orlando (although he could later be excluded if he decides to play for Italy). Greek star Georgamilis is another mover to Juventus, while Montpellier snap up Julius Chukwudi on a free transfer.
