Career Update

I managed to get the Schalke job in March and got them from 12th in the league to 5th and also won them the German Cup, my first cup towards the challenge.

The Juventus, Monaco and Man City jobs come available, I applied for them but  they all rejected me, so I am going to try win the German League with Schalke as I think I have got a good team there.

I have done well with France winning the Euros. going to stay with them and try win the World Cup before I try get an African national job and try win the African Cup Of Nations.

Manager Profile – Fixtures

As mentioned earlier I got the job at Manchester City following the really bad season at Schalke 04. When I got the job we were placed 6th after 30 games and with quite a gap up to the top teams, so it would be tough finishing any higher than we were when I got there. My main objective for the season is to figure out how to play with this team, where I need to strengthen before next season and challenge for the FA Cup, where we already were in the semi final.

I got off to a rough start with what is one of the craziest matches I've had yet on this save as my first match against Aston Villa. Went down 1-0 right before half time before we equalised after 70 minutes. As we kept pushing for the win we got a man sent off after 78 minutes, forcing me to change the system only to see them get reduced to 10 men as well after 82 minutes. It looked like it would end disappointingly with a draw before we scored in the 96th and 97th minute to secure a 1-3 win. Went 8-1-1 in the 10 games I had, drawing Tottenham and losing massively against Chelsea. But we secured the FA Cup trophy, giving us something from a bad year.

Quick update on Schalke: Left them 12th in league after 15 games, but saw them through EURO Cup group stage as group winner. In the end they barely survived relegation after winning the play-off and got knocked out from EURO Cup second knockout round.

CAREER UPDATE

Bit of a rubbish pointless season, I won the German Cup, Europa League and Euro Super Cup but I was 2nd for most of the season and Bayern were just too good and then at the end of the season I dropped some points and ended 5th.

I resigned from Schalke, I applied for the Liverpool, Spurs and Barcelona jobs, all 3 chose other managers. I feel like this challenge is going to take longer then I hoped for lol.

CAREER UPDATE

Just a small update but I basically won the Confederations Cup and the World Cup with France.

Still no club job though, I have applied for a few jobs at top teams but despite winning everything with France national team, having a 90% reputation and Continental Pro License I still can't get jobs, I couldn't even get the New York Red Bulls job lol.

I have left France and took over as Brazil manager, just trying to get the International achievements out the way while I find the right club job. I think I will end up taking the longest amount of time to complete this challenge but I will do it eventually lol.

Confederations Cup
2033

Having lost in the nations league final last time out we again got to the final and this time overcame Spain to win the nations league.  The big one this summer though was the Confederations Cup.
We opened up the group stage with a 4-1 win against New Zealand.  We followed that up with a dismal display against Australia drawing 1-1.  And rounded off the group with a 2-1 win against Ecuador.  The semi-final saw us despatch Mexico 2-1 to setup a final against Ecuador.  The final was more comfortable than the group game as won 3-0.

2021 - Changchun Yatai

gn6UW8G.png

Finding a new club only took two months this time. Changchun are an almost permanent fixture in the Chinese Super League's bottom half, but this season they'd found themselves doing better than expected until their manager left for Shangdong (who were in serious danger of relegation until the very end of the season), with the team 7th and only eleven games remaining. Enter myself. I'd just flunked an interview with Jeju, and I figured this was as good a chance as I was likely to get in the near future.

Competitions -- Fixtures

What I failed to take into account was that I'd be having the toughest possible starting fixtures, and that I'd have to deal with them while my two star foreigners were out recovering from hip injuries. Needless to say, it was a bit of a rough landing, but once I finally found my feet the team started playing really well and getting results, even before our best players recovered. A win against Wuhan in the second-to-last fixture would've made us sixth, but in the end we had to make do with maintaining the same position we'd inherited, which is still the best league position for Changchun in almost a full decade.

Next season, the board is unlikely to ask for more than a top half finish, so I should be able to gradually improve the squad without too much pressure. The players seem to like me well enough, so that's already an improvement from my first months in Melbourne, at least. Being optimistic and assuming the transfer window goes well, I should be aiming for a top 3-4 finish, and maybe another good cup run.

Roster

The team has a decent enough base to build upon, that's for sure. The obvious standouts are our three foreigners (well, Vibe also counts, but he's retiring): Odion Ighalo, Marinho, and Pacôme Zouzoua. The first two in particular had an outstanding season in their fifth year in Changchun, and look ready for more assuming they don't injury their hips again. There's also a lot of promising young talent, plus another bunch of 4 to 5-star potential kids that just came through the academy. With a couple of quality signings in key positions (particularly looking at both full backs, the AMC position, and perhaps the goal) we'd have a very solid-looking squad to challenge for things in the near future.

Mexico
Gold Cup
2033

Following the Confederations Cup the Mexico job became available and with the Mexican B team still in the middle of the Gold Cup so I resigned from the Italy post and applied for the vacant Mexican job.  I was appointed just after the group stage had finished so my first game was the Gold Cup quarter-final against El Salvador which we won 2-0.  The semi-final saw us face our rivals to the north which saw us come from behind to beat USA 5-2.  The final was a tense afair with few chances against Costa Rica which we edged 1-0.

Are you keeping your international job when you are applying at club level?  It is VERY difficult to get a good club job if you are in possession of an international job.  It makes sense, though, as I see you're applying to clubs like Liverpool and Barca.  Those clubs don't have to have a manager that splits between international and club duties.

With a 90% reputation and your international trophies, you should get a top club job very easily, IF you aren't at an international post when interviewing.

If you were out of an international posting when these apps were going through, disregard...but at the same time, I think Barca may still be a bridge too far.  You've had awesome international success with the World Cup, but still very little success at club level, with just the one domestic cup pot to your name.  Things to consider...

@jaysdailydose I get the big club jobs with a 90% reputation when still an international manager, if you count Real Madrid, AC Milan and Arsenal (current EPL & ECL holders) as big clubs.  I'd guess @Ronaldo Beckham's reputation is around 60-70% due to only having 5 trophies.  ps. you've got the Euro's and confederations cup in the wrong section in your summary.

I would agree with you, but he stated he had a 90% reputation.

Was going to add to that post but the sub-quoting system is fairly obtuse on here. :)

I was going to say that it is nice to see that it is better in FM18 in this regard than it was in previous versions.  Especially with around a 60-70% rep in previous incarnations, it always seemed quite difficult to get a good club job while retaining the international job.

It is good to see at the absolute top of the game it can still work out.

oops :) missed that :seagull:

No need to knock your head off the walls. :)  Even with his international trophies, that would have generally been my guess in the past as well!

I'm guessing it has more to do with his lack of club success more than his reputation.  I'm sure he'd walk into any international job in the game with his early resume, including both the Confederations and the World Cup -- but with only a German Cup to his name, I'd really find it difficult to think Barcelona would hire him, for example, unless he'd come through their system like Pep and he'd managed their "B" or something similar.

It would actually be nice to know that they would take things like that into account more and more!

At least we know that he's able to get at least fairly reputable clubs, as LA Galaxy is a 3.5 star reputation club.

Thanks for the feedback guys, one question I need to ask as I just won the MLS Eastern Conference and also the MLS Supporters Shield, is one of them classed as the league title and the other one classed as a cup as the MLS really confuses me.

I have now resigned from New York Red Bulls. I will resign from Ivory Coast after the African Cup On Nations as I want to tick that off my achievements and then I will try get a club job in top European League as I got a lot left to do.

@blackdevil Are you sure I have put the achievements in the wrong section as I feel like I have them in the right section.

The Euro's should be in the "Continental Tournaments" section and the Confederations Cup should be in the "World Tournaments" section.

Quoting @vikeologist:

MLS (USA)
 - For challenge purposes the MLS Cup counts as the league, and the US Open Cup counts as the cup. The Canadian Championship, and the league section of the MLS (Supporters Shield) don't count for anything.

CAREER UPDATE

A good season for me with Jiangsu, I won the treble there winning the league, cup and Asian Champions League, so getting them achievements ticked off, I also won the African Nations with Ivory Coast as well.

I am now unemployed with job at all, my reputation has dropped to 70% but I still think that will be enough to get a decent job and try tick the 5 main leagues off now.

UPDATE - Just took over as Fiorentina manager,  they are 14th in the league in January, I am just managing them to get my rep up as I aint got much experience in the top leagues. hoping to win the Italian Cup as well.

CAREER UPDATE

After taking over at Fiorentina in February I managed to get 8th place and one point away from Europa League qualification, a steady start, if I stay at Fiorentina I am hoping to get a top 6 place.

The Bayern, Barcelona and Lyon jobs come available. I applied for all of them but didn't get any of the jobs. My reputation is still too small for a big club. I think I will try to get Fiorentina as high as I can and try win the Italian Cup in the mean time.

Well something unexpected happened and I managed to win Seria A with Fiorentina, I was really surprised by that due the expectations and I just assumed the other teams ahead of me would be too strong. I only just won it and it come to the last game of the season but I won the title and I am well happy.

I have resigned and the process continues. I hope I get a chance at a big club. I want to try win another title and either the UEFA Champions League or cup.

I took over as AJax manager as they were a chance to win another league title, cup and they are in the UEFA Champions League as well. so I took over them, I then noticed that Mexico national team job was available and I thought well I need to win the Gold Cup at some point.

Mexico gave me the job and to my surprise my first game in charge was the Gold Cup final lol. How lucky and flukey is that. I only gone and won it as well beating Costa Rica 3-0 in the final.

@Ronaldo Beckham Congrats on what I'm sure you know is called a 'vike', and turning up at a club just to play the final, although it's Mexico, not a club, so maybe just a semi-vike.

I feel honour bound to try to get a vike into my challenge, but no luck so far. I'm 2 domestic cups in arrears, so when I finish my work in one league, I do look to see if there's a cup finalist vacancy in another, but of course, getting to cup finals does tend to protect managers from the sack.

2018/19
Stevenage F.C.

stevenagefc.png.3e67daade980fc145ccf03505312d888.png

Sky Bet League Two

Well, I managed to find my favorite three words in my FM Dictionary -- "Promoted As Champions!" :D

I always do well whenever I manage Stevenage, so I'm not truly surprised.  This was one of the hardest title fights in my history of playing this game, and that's a long damned history!  The title race was fought very hard until the very final day, with Doncaster refusing to submit to our dominance.  We managed to set club records for both wins in a season and total points with 31 and 102, respectively.  102 points and the race went to the final day, that's right. :)  I finished the season on a 21-match unbeaten streak and it STILL went to the final day, that's how tough Donny was...

Fisayo Adarabioyo (Tosin's big brother) signed in October, leading the way for me getting star strikers off the free agent list, and had 20 goals and 14 assists in all competitions, as my most profitable free agent striker signing.  Fellow free agent Ryan Loft came in at the very end of November and still managed 10 goals and 4 assists in all competitions, in only 16 appearances, many coming as a substitute.  They combined with Stevenage stalwart Matt Godden, who had 29 goals and 17 assists in all competitions, along with at least two other strikers in Jamie Thomas and Jamie Gray who both made significant contributions, although they spent much time out with injury.

"Left Back" Raheem Hanley was another free agent signing, and he starred in central midfield for us... taking our Mezzala role in our tactic and making it his own on his way to winning PFA League Two Player of the Year for his efforts, averaging a 7.40 in the league with 7 goals and 9 assists from the heart of midfield.  Our 4-2-4 that we ran at the end of our Tamworth career was a great tactic for our entire season at Stevenage, and the lads made it work.

We were linked with several clubs before the season ended, and we did try to move after it ended, but interviews at Premier League Wolves, and (ugh) Everton, along with Championship Hull, were all unsuccessful.  Maybe it is better, as we managed to get the Stevenage board to make THREE upgrades to both Youth Recruitment and Junior Coaching, to where we now have Excellent/Above Average in those respective areas -- and they pumped out a "Golden Generation" class for my intake this season.  Sure, it is League Two, but I've already had the striker in the class being picked on "Quick Pick" -- and scoring two and making one on his full debut.  We also had the right back from the intake also make a full league debut and not disappoint.

So, on we go with Stevenage F.C. in League One, and hoping I can re-create my past and get back-to-back promos with a Stevenage side.  We've established a good base, and we've been able to "keep the band together" all except for our best player in goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman.  Bristol City met his £450k release clause, so he has departed.  We'll target a mid-table finish for League One, unless things get interesting, and we go for that back-to-back promotion. :)   We also hope the board will allow us to continue our coaching badges, as with a lack of on-hand funds, we weren't allowed to start our Continental badges yet, and still sit with a National A License.

See you next season!

I managed to finally win the UEFA Champions League and also won the Dutch league so that is another league ticked off.

Jose Mourinho has finally left Man Utd after 16 years there (poor Man Utd fans lol) so I have applied for that, I resigned from Ajax to give me the best chance of getting the job.

Definitely have a lot of work to do to catch you, but luckily, my disabled ass has time to play. :D

Vikeologist's 2035/6 Barcelona Season Report

Image result for barcelona fc

Every team I take over seems to be more in debt. Even after I sold off the players I didn’t need, I was only able to bring in one new player, my Brazilian national team wingback Anderson for £54 million. I also brought in another 2 young Brazilians on loan to develop them and an expensive but necessary loan signing at the other wingback position.

I did think that we weren’t going to be able to beat  Real Madrid who started the season with 9 straight victories, while we had dropped 2 points. However they began dropping points while after the draw we won 19 league games in a row, and wrapped up the league with 6 games to go.

With the league all but in the bag, the tension came from the cup. If we didn’t win it, that would put me 3 domestic cups behind, and thus 3 more leagues I would have to play to complete the challenge. I don’t mind the 2. I’m almost looking forward to managing in Portugal and Scotland, but I could really do without a third extra one.

We did our best to lose it, or perhaps I did, playing weakened sides in first leg defeats before recovering in the second legs. It was stupid. I should have rotated the sides in the league, not cups. However we made it safely to the final where we would face Real Madrid, and this time no second leg should I mess up the first.

We went 1-0 down. The 2-1 ahead. Conceded a late penalty and then scored the winning goal in the 85th minute. As I’ve said before, winning these domestic cups is a huge relief. If we’d lost that would have added (at least) another full season to my challenge.

I thought about leaving straight after the cup, in the hope of creating some kind of job cascade that might open up a vacancy in Portugal or Scotland with a club still in one of the cups. Doesn’t sound very likely, does it? The Hibs manager (my boyhood club) was on shaky ground once they lost in the semi-final, but I want to finish in Scotland, and the Hibs players really do not suit my tactics.

So, I managed to make a 5th straight Champions League final, done with 4 different clubs. There we would face Real Madrid, giving them a quick chance for revenge. (Actually they took their first chance for revenge by winning the last match of the season, which would have been a hell of a last day fixture between the top 2 clubs had we not been 26 points ahead of them).

Anyway, in a far less stressful match for me than the Spanish Cup final, we easily beat Madrid to give me my 3rd Champions League with 3 different teams.

I forget who it was that was doing this challenge and couldn’t manage to win the Champions League, but it’s good that he eventually did, otherwise he would really hate me.

Top Goalscorer – Sidney  – 50

Top Average Rating – Amauri – 8.19

Man of the Match – Amauri – 18

MVP –  Sidney  The best Barca striker is also the best Brazilian striker. Fellow Brazilian, Amauri (Chelsea), who was my best player at Chelsea picked up a serious injury this season and at 30 is now only on the cusp of the Brazilian side.

What’s Next?

Well nothing exciting is happening this summer with Brazil who have won every World Cup qualifying match easily and are now ranker #1 in the world. Still not confident about our chances in the World Cup in 2 years time though.

So, I only have Portugal and Scotland loaded, and unless a top job becomes available (and the Rangers job might well), I might be just managing Brazil for a while. Like I say, I’d prefer to manage in Scotland last.

However, though the Porto job became available, I didn’t get it after the interview, so it’s off to rangers I go. Hopefully I can win the League Cup, and then get another job in Portugal or somewhere else and get both the remaining cups in the one season.

South Korea may also be an option as I have to load up that league to generate some players to make S Korea a playable nation.

@jaysdailydose Congrats on your progress so far. Have you found yourself drawn to follow Stevenage's results in real life or watched any of their matches?

@Ronaldo Beckham Yeah, it's a pain to be a couple of cups behind the leagues, and have to play extra leagues just to get them. The first domestic cup in Scotland finishes by the end of November, so that's a good opportunity for one, but winning it is hardly a certainty. Got my first match in that cup to play now, so expect a sweary update if it goes pear shaped straight away.

Oh, I think nearly everybody is pulling off Vikes; except me.

I mean, I did win the league with Juventus taking over with 15 matches remaining, but that's a sorry excuse for a Vike, given my history in previous challenges of taking over on the day of a cup final second leg, or managing 2 different teams in the same World Cup.

When the Vike don't vike, what's the world coming to?

Only a small update to let you know after applying for all the top teams and even low end Prem teams I didn't get offered any of the jobs there, I got offered the Gladbach, Strasbourg and Valencia jobs so I took the Valencia job as they had the better squad, I am hoping to win the Spanish cup at least and hope I win the league.

@vikeologist Our coverage is very good for football over here in the States, but it is impossible to catch a League Two match, really.  I do follow their results every season now.  As you know, every damn time I have tried this challenge over three versions, I wind up at Stevenage, and do well -- and then a new version comes out.  This time I don't care, I'm finishing this thing. ;)

Congrats with Barca, and best of luck at Rangers and with the Selecao! :D

I think there needs to be a minimum number of available players for the national job to be eligible for the human player to take over.  The "best" thing is to have that nations league loaded if possible and/or surrounding leagues.

I only just about got by with South Korea with 23 players available.  It was that low as I'd only loaded the Chinese league previously and that had since been removed by the time the job became available.

Vikeologist's August to November 2036 Rangers Report

(or A Tale of 2 Cities Part 1 - It's a far better thing I do)

Image result for glasgow rangers

114 days. 1 League Cup. The semi-final was a close one, but other than that, smooth sailing.

Part 1 of my double-cup mission completed.

Goodbye, Rangers. Sorry I never bothered to learn your names.

It is difficult to discipline myself to not bother with trying to improve the training assignments and all the rest of the nitty-gritty. I left Rangers comfortably top of the table and through to the 1st knockout round of the Europa league with a match to spare, but for the most part, I just had a one-track mind. I came, I saw, I won the competition that everybody else at the club didn’t give a toss about.

I made the mistake of applying for a big club in Iceland (can't remember the name) while still at Rangers, and they came to me the day before the final to say that they couldn't agree compensation with Rangers.

A couple of months after leaving Rangers, I almost accepted a job in Portugal, (again, forgot the name) who were in the later stages of a cup that I'd be able to win or lose fairly quickly because of the schedule. probably should have taken it. It wouldn't have done my rep too much harm had I not won it, but I decided to hold off for even lower hanging fruit.

That takes us to

Vikeologist's 2037 Brazil Confederations Cup Report

Image result for brazil hubris

Despite being consistently 1st or 2nd ranked in the world, the FA only expected me to make it to the semi-finals. I'd already won this, so this competition was about me seeing if I'd made the right decision to stay with Brazil 2 years ago in the hopes of winning next years World Cup.

It seems that I might have. We crushed Italy in a pre-tournament friendly and easily beat Germany and Holland in cup to win the trophy, and they're the other top 3 teams in the world.

Season 2036/37

Shakhtar Donetsk and Italy

Another season, another destination.

This won't be a long update. I didn't get interviewed for the couple of decent jobs which came up in Spain, so made the decision to take the Shakhtar job with the sole aim of winning the FA Cup, and adding another trophy to my personal cabinet. If we could win the league as well, that would be great. Realistically, Europe was never going to be a target.

We were the best team in the league, and we really should have had the title wrapped up comfortably. However, 1 point from three games meant that we needed a win on the last day of the season in order to ensure the title. Thankfully, a 4-0 victory over Metalurg was enough to seal the league title. Essentially, its a pointless trophy in terms of the challenge, but winning is never a bad thing for your reputation, right?

Our cup run saw us defeat Zirka 3-0, Dynamo Kiev 3-2 (we took our foot of the gas at 3-0), and Chornomorets 5-0 in the semi final to set up a cup showdown with Kaparty, our closest challengers in the league. Loanee centre back Steve Saunders put us in front, before we were pegged back just after half time. Both sides had good chances during the rest of the second half, and it looked as if we were heading for extra time. However, Alexandr Blinov had other ideas, and he buried his chance in the 93rd minute to complete the double, and this time add a meaningful trophy to my challenge haul.

Europe was Europe. Out in the group stages, and them absolutely spanked by Lyon over two legs in the Europa League.

Internationally, I jumped at the chance to manage Italy. I've spent the first few games trying different players out. I've been brutal with some of the elder statesmen of the squad and shipped them out already if they realistically weren't going to be up to the standard needed for the World Cup in two years time. Qualification is due to start shortly, but the group looks fairly straightforward.
