Boiiing
Help Next match is away at Tottenham, who have Leandro Damião up front. As you know, he scores goals for fun. Over 30 a season, every season in my Save, including lots against me (booo! hisss!). So how do I stop him, please, short of hiring a digital hitman? Here are his stats: I don't know if it helps, but my CDs are van Rhijn, Denswil, Hanley, and Olsson It looks to me like only Denswil & Hanley might keep up with him over even a short distance, but Olsson's anticipation might give him a chance too. I've a couple of reserve CDs as well, but I don't really think they're up to the job yet. I can link you their stats too though, if you think it would be useful. MrPompey
Sometimes its not about stopping the player who can score goals instead it can be about stopping the players that pass him the ball. You need to think like a manager
aderow
Yup. MyPompey is exactly right. If you can't stop him, stop him from getting the ball in the first place.
MrPompey
PS - Look at his tackling, aggression and positioning skills. Perhaps being man-marked by an aggressive, hard tackling, pressing type player may quieten him down
Boiiing
Sometimes its not about stopping the player who can score goals instead it can be about stopping the players that pass him the ball. You need to think like a manager Sure, that means I only have to stop Bale (8 assists) and Lewis Holtby (9), and Kwadwo Asamoah (7)! (Damião has 8 assists, as well!) I may have to go back to the hitman idea... Perhaps being man-marked by an aggressive, hard tackling, pressing type player may quieten him down Paging Mr. Vukojevic! Mr. Vukojevic, please! And if you're not available, send Mr Srna instead! Actually I've only done this - targeted a player with a specific player of my own - twice before, and in both cases I got told that my player was being dragged out of position. Is there anything I can do or look out for which will help me avoid that, or is it something I just have to accept? For example, Vukojevic is a DM, and Srna is a LB, so given Damião is a central player, I'd probably be better setting Vukojevic on him, right? P.S. I haven't really hired the Croatian Mafia! It just looks that way I hired Vukojevic specifically for the ECC because I needed more "steel", and got Srna in as cover for my main RB.
Guest
Bring pulled out of a fixed position is the trade-off when assigning a player to tightly man-mark an opponent. The skill comes from designing a tactic based around 9 active outfield players.

MrPompey
OKso press the team in there own half, dont let them have possession or time for long So save before the match, then think about different approaches to tactics that you can consider. Set the tactics play, and importantly watch the game and look at the end game stats restore back try another. Now I would focus more on the stats rather than the goals. Whislt you dont want to lose there is some luck involved with goals but the stats will help show you if you tactics are restricting the opposition As I said - think like a manager. If you turn up to any event thinking you will lose then dont turn up. Think like a winner. Dont go toe to toe with better sides, think more craftily. Non Footy example. By Heavyweight standards Mike Tyson was small with a shorter reach than opposition boxers. Did he stand off and let them jab him to death? No it got inside them, in close, gave them no time to think and caused mayhem. Thats what the lesser teams can do Try and test out tactics but just like irl Football accept they dont work 100% of the time
Boiiing
OKso press the team in there own half, dont let them have possession or time for long Really? I thought with very skilful teams it was better to stand off, so your own team keeps its shape more? So save before the match, then think about different approaches to tactics that you can consider. By Heavyweight standards Mike Tyson was small with a shorter reach than opposition boxers. Did he stand off and let them jab him to death? No it got inside them, in close, gave them no time to think and caused mayhem. Thats what the lesser teams can do Well, Tyson was first beaten by someone who wasn't afraid of him, the way I'd always said he would be. Douglas used his jab to keep Tyson from getting inside, and landed his own big punches. And height (which is normally associated with reach, unless the fighter has freakishly long arms, like Liston) isn't always a big advantage in boxing - the taller boxer will be trying to punch down onto a smaller opponent, which isn't ideal. And just to be clear, I've scored more goals than Tottingham this season, while letting in only one more, so I'm not a huge underdog in that way. The quality of their players though is out of this world (as you'd expect of a team that has won the league 4 out of the last 5 seasons), compared with my team. Try and test out tactics but just like irl Football accept they dont work 100% of the time Thanks, I've been doing just that. I can take the lead (have been two goals up) but can't seem to close out the game. My best result came when I went 0-2 up... and let them draw back level for a 2-2 draw. I've managed to keep them goalless once, but had no attacks worthy of the name myself. Mostly they're close-run matches, but they win most of them. And saying that, I've just gone a goal up in the 65th minute... with my first shot of the match. Even if I win this, I know the fans are going to hate me because we didn't have enough shots on goal Of course, I didn't win it. 1-1 draw. And yes, you can guess who their scorer was. I'm going to have to move on with the rest of the season (just two more matches until we can all go on holiday! ), but I will come back to this, it's an interesting exercise. I may have to go back to the hitman idea... but they're mainly wide players I'd be going with defensive full backs, and possibly some 'opposition instructions' of man marking and hard tackling on Bale, just to make a point going back several seasons now, I always used to go hard and tight on Fabregas (helped that I played 2 DMs), which then limited the effect of the OP Vela/RvP/Walcott who always scored 2-3 per game I took great pleasure in watching Fabregas finish the game with under 65% condition (and normally meant I kept a clean sheet)
MrPompey
Really? I thought with very skilful teams it was better to stand off, so your own team keeps its shape more?If you stand off you invite the opposition to attack you leaving them lost of space. They will take shot after shot, make attempt after attempt. Parking the bus may sometimes work but there are manager's of many of the lesser sides who have shocked better sides playing an aggressive in your face pressing approach pressing the stronger opposition in there own half. As I said above use a start point and test various tecniques and watch the game and see how well you. The best player on the park cannot play if he doesn't have the space to do it. rare are the players who thrive in these cicumstances. Look at your team and decide what works best for you. Lay back and wait for the inevitable hoping for a 0-0 is one option, there are others
