We weren't: we were third and five points behind Chelsea having played a game more. And the Boxing Day game? Chelsea at Alonso Stadium, of course! We put up a good fight, but had to go for it at 2-1 down with 20 minutes to go and it went the wrong way, with Chelsea extending their margin and winning the game 4-1. It felt like this would be another year without the title already. But a big 4-0 win at Tsakiridis over Man City, the only other team to have beaten us up to that point, gave me fresh hope. Though I could never string more than two wins together in a row, we didn't lose again until April, when we decided to lose to Juventus, Middlesbrough and Cardiff and just draw with Derby to end all three of our major trophy hopes: four games saw us fall from a potential clean sweep to another likely empty handed season. Worse still, the last game in April would see a visit to Chelsea, and the possibility of conceding the league to them with a defeat. But we didn't. A Sargin goal put us 1-0 up with 25 to go. A tense final quarter was tough but a Crocker goal in injury time gave us a glimmer of hope! One point behind, two games to go. We were relying on Middlesbrough or Tottenham to do us a favour, whilst we needed to win at Old Trafford to give us a shot of the title on the final day against Sheffield Wednesday. But Middlesbrough's failure to put up a fight in the first of the four relevant games didn't bode well. While Chelsea aimed to win the FA Cup against Cardiff, we faced our Old Trafford trip needing a win to give us any realistic chance of the title. Sargin gave us the perfect start after just four minutes and about the same amount of time into the second half he doubled our advantage, before completing his hat-trick the other side of a United consolation. It was going to the last day... The goal difference situation meant that only a win would help us, but I also knew that if we could beat Wednesday, the pressure was on Chelsea against Tottenham - who themselves were lying in 17th and needed a win to guarantee their place in the league next year! Things were looking very exciting indeed. And made more so when Chelsea lost in the Cup Final: their form wasn't great having lost four games in nine in the run up to the final day. They also had the CL final against Juventus to think about six days after the Spurs game. Could it be that this was it? In what seems an unbelievably unlikely scenario, THREE of my young players including two defenders who would have played were travelling back from international duty and missed the final game of the season. Tobia Lanna had been the find of the season and to miss him for the last game was annoying. But honestly, I felt that even with a switched formation made necessary by the total lack of full backs (Ricardo and Barber were injured and suspended respectively), I could overcome Sheffield Wednesday to potentially win the title. I got very excited very fast. Just two minutes in, Sp**s took the lead against Chelsea! Within four more minutes, Crocker had given us the lead. As it stood, we were champions! Terni doubled our lead and Burden's goal in the 24th put our game beyond much doubt. At half-time, we were 4 goals to the good. Spurs were still holding firm... Surely it wouldn't be this straightforward? There had to be a twist. We kept banging in the goals in the second half, and with three minutes left, I started to think it was done. We were 6-0 up, and Chelsea still trailing 1-0. This was it...my first completion of the challenge. Surely? CHALLENGE COMPLETED for the first time ever! With FM16 around the corner and possibly the end of this game, I can't tell you how happy I was when this happened! It's not even close to my highest points tally of 83 but it's all about context, and this year we were the best! Won the manager of the year for the TENTH TIME! Our CUP RUNS this year. Pretty honoured that in a CL group that included Juventus andLeverkusen, I didn't concede a single goal until 12 minutes before the end of the final game of the group! We still won the game 4-1. It felt very good to finally win at Wembley again in February and take the pressure off the other competitions a little. It was disappointing to go out to Juventus when we were by far the better team throughout the tie. But losing in the FA Cup Semi Final to Cardiff was perhaps even more gut-wrenching. Unforgiveable. It does make me feel a bit better that Chelsea not only lost the FA Cup Final but the CL Final too! Estimated Values give a good estimation of where we are in the grand scheme of things. Reputation seems to take a while longer to catch up. I've decided to put every club in here for some global context. A huge swing towards us this year, with a couple of hundred million added to our value and Chelsea falling back towards us. But I should overtake United soon. This year, if they fail to win their CL qualifier. Key Players These are the main men who brought me to the final hurdle of Dafuge's challenge at long last. Nicola Terni* - I said last year that he was a legend. Anyone arguing? Tobia Lanna - the find of the season. A stunning centre back who is able to play right back too. Not yet ahead of Matamala but I am using them in rotation. Francis Burden - only 32 goals this year but has now formed a wonderful partnership with... Gokhan Sargin - not a lot to choose between them. £113m well spent, I feel. Mejdi Ghodhbane - the rock in my midfield still. Isaac Turkson - still going strong, and now cemented as a legend. Simon Simpson - I'm so pleased we won the league while he was still around. Probably my favourite player from this save. But he only has one final season left, with retirement now twelve months away. Nicolas Matamala - to have him this low in the list is indicative of how good this squad is. Still brilliant. Stevie Dempsey - probably should be better than he is to be honest, his attributes are stunning. (*= fans' player of the year) The team of the year. This is a screenshot that means a lot to me. The first title-winning Whitehawk side! The historical best XI. Matamala replaces Hermannsson. Ghodhbane is in for Richards, with Calder dropping to the bench. I have replacements ready. He may also have the distinction of having played the most games for us without scoring! He has never scored a senior goal for anyone. APPS: 226, GLS: 0, ASSTS: 13, MoM: 3, AvR: 7.21 MANEL LAO Although I don't need him with Burden and Sargin around, to lose him for nothing was daft. Oh well. I'm also really busy at the moment which doesn't help but I'm starting to cast my eyes to next month and what I'd like to do. After the small but loyal following I've had down in Brighton this year, I'd like to do my own career thread again. I'm currently thinking I'd like to do a long term Arsenal save (it's been a few years since I had a really good game with my own team). It would probably be with the intention of focussing heavily on youth (Neppo's challenge is always fun) and trying to keep a nucleus of loyal English players who play for years and years and years. I always find this is the most fun I have with a game: when players are breaking records left, right and centre and there's some friendly competition between that top striker you've had for years and the centre back stalwart as to who can play more games etc. However, I've also considered having another crack at the wonderfully named Moron in the lower leagues in Sweden, which was great fun a couple of years ago. I'd be open to other ideas too - but I'm a one-club man. The fun of FM for me is in seeing players develop and achieve things with you. I'm fairly determined to do one more year of my Whitehawk save so that I can finish off Simon Simpson's career as he's been one of my stalwarts. With that in mind I thought I'd do a bit of a nostalgia trip for you: In terms of legends, I'd say it goes, in ascending order of greatness: Tsakiridis, Ghodhbane, Terni, Finney, Simpson - but I appreciate that I might be a bit biased towards the most illustrious era during SiSi's career. It's also probably rather harsh on Nate Judge, who is, after all, the holder of the record for the most appearances for me in this save with 638 in the league. I also can't remember a game where none of the names that immediately spring to mind have been strikers. That's unusual. Although I have a massive soft spot for Francis Burden, I don't think he is quite in the same category! Victor Hugo Rocchiccioli, perhaps aptly given that he shares a name with a great novelist, holds all the short term scoring records (overall in a season and a league season and most in a match), whereas the honour of being the highest league goalscorer goes to CFG, but he wasn't even close to being the best striker I've had - he managed 30 goals only once and only got to 20 on one other occasion. I just liked him! SiSi holds the honour of the highest AvR in a season with 7.98 in 2052/53, which is about the highest I've ever seen for so many games I think. The highest fee I have paid was £113m for Sargin and the highest fee received was £38m for Enzo Criniti (a good bit of business that, he was never brilliant and recently moved on for just £9m). If I finish this season, SiSi will break the record for being my oldest ever player. He already is the oldest goalscorer I've had (the youngest being Paniagua who is doing stunningly well at Celtic on loan and could end up being one of three rotating up front and the eventual successor to Sargin). Biggest bargain: easy. Simon Simpson cost £3.4m and was for a while arguably the best player in the world. Cheers, Olympiakos! Honourable mention to Africa's finest, Isaac Turkson who only cost me £1.7m from Asante Kotoko. I also bought Daniel Antwi from them that day. Yes, I don't remember him either - hit and miss?! Matamala also only cost me £1.5m. Biggest flop: hard to say at this point but Anthony James is a name you don't know yet but will do shortly. He looks like a candidate having been signed for £42m. For the time being though this goes to Matthias Lechner for £25.5m. Inexplicable signing since he was a winger and I've never used wingers. How I managed to only lose £7m on him I still don't understand. But then I've bought quite a lot of rubbish players for big money and been able to sell them on for a profit for no obvious reason! I think my biggest loss though, was on Alessandro, my first real big money signing in 2046 for £27m. He played 54 games for me, scored just 16 goals, and was sold to Monaco for £8.5m where he proceeded to score almost 150 league goals in just 7 years. For now, that means (with the number in brackets indicating appearances total before the season I'm in): Walsh (25) Open (will be looking for a new young left back) Terni (319) Matamala (348) Clark (16) Watts (25) Ghodhbane (354) Simpson (552) Jose Alberto (0) Burden (314) Open (will be looking for a new striker and selling Sargin on eventually, but for now he'll play there and if he comes good for a while, I'll keep him on to break CFG's record). Realistically, there are only five of those who can make it: Watts, Walsh, Jose Alberto, Clark and Burden. Take Burden out of there and they have just 42 appearances between them before this year. A stellar career saw Simpson win literally every major trophy available to him at club level. He was probably the best player in the world for some time, definitely the best player Australia have seen and Whitehawk will miss him greatly. His career stats, although his overall stats for Whitehawk (not just league) are: Appearances: 608 Goals: 181 Assists: 256 Player of the Match: 59 Yellow Cards: 20 Red Cards: 0 Average Rating: 7.52 What a legend! Last time they came up after two seasons, the previous time they spent seven seasons down there.... GreyedOutMan Posted October 28, 2015 Author Share Posted October 28, 2015 If anyone's still reading I'd love some input on my plans for FM16 which I am very much umming and aahing about. I feel I have unfinished business with this save, I'd love to get a stadium named after someone other than a defender for a start! So I'll probably stick with this until any initial problems with FM16 are ironed out, but when I do get it, I want to have a clear idea of a save. I was fairly sure I wanted an Arsenal save as it has been a while but I'm toying with the idea of moving abroad. I had a great game in Sweden with Moron FK a couple of years ago where I used only players from their youth system: it won me my only award ever on these messageboards! It was good fun and that sort of save could be a way to go. However, the idea of working in one of the big European leagues also appeals. Even there, I'd have to decide whether I wanted to take on a big club and work to rebuild with youth perhaps (I've always wanted to try doing the big club/small nation again but Guatemala seem to be too small to be realistic), or something else... I've tried doing "journeyman" saves before but they never really get me interested: I want to build/rebuild a club and stay with them for years and years and years! I'm also fairly sure that the only club I'd consider in England would be Arsenal. Any suggestions about what you'd like to see me do with FM16? It's likely to be around Christmas, I think, but you never know... Current list of possibilities (open to adding to the list, otherwise votes?) Real Madrid or Barcelona - youth only, Guatemala focus. Small club in one of the big leagues - take on the big boys and build a dynasty. Open to suggestions about which club! Moron youth only. Linfield youth only. I'd much prefer the small club in a big league option. Some suggestions: FC United (too boring and predictable, I know), Holstein Kiel (German 3rd League), Monopoli (Italy, just because the name is hilarious), Clermont Foot (French Ligue 2). FC United is too similar to Whitehawk for me, but the other three are all possibilities. Although I suppose I'm slightly leaning towards Spain if I don't go for the Arsenal save, simply because it would be great to eventually topple the Real/Barca duopoly (see what I did there?! dllu Posted October 28, 2015 Share Posted October 28, 2015 Germany Holstein Kiel are the German club that is closest to Denmark (on the national level), so could be interesting to try and do a "Danish youth project" with them. Come to think of it, if you don't pick this one, I might just do it myself. Or maybe Würzburger Kickers. Just promoted from the regional leagues for the first time and arguably the smallest playable team in Germany. The challenge could be to become the biggest club in the state of Bayern - which would of course also mean the biggest in the whole country. Or take Magdeburg (also newly promoted) back to their 1970s GDR glory days. Italy I really only picked Monopoli because of the name which could make for a heavily pun-laden career. I doubt the new manager avatar feature includes white handlebars and top hats, though. Or make Lupa Roma the kings of Rome (and Italy). France I have no relationship with Clermont Foot other than having visited the city once. I'm really not very familiar with French football. Spain Gernika (because of the history of the town), Mensajero (on the Canary Islands) or Melilla (the Spanish enclave in North Africa). Yes, I have a thing for weird or "isolated" clubs... Definitely possible. As for the Germany/Denmark thing - nah, the whole point is that it has to be a tiny country. One that has never qualified for a world cup before. Borne is a village with 400 inhabitants. Though you would need some lower league update to play this. And try to sign Messi before he retires of course.
