Club Atlético Boca Juniors

Season 2014 Review:

The last season of the old way bought about a change in a new way for Boca Juniors as the appointment of Arlos Pianchi was hoped to stir the club into a new era. 3 Competitions (potentially 4) lay ahead, the Torneo de Transición (League), the Copa Argentina, a trip into Continental football with the Copa Sudamericana and finally should Boca win either of the domestic competitions a chance at winning the Supercopa Argentina.

Personnel wise, there was little required and the main changes saw 2 experienced players leave as Fernando Gago went back to Italy in a $9.5m deal to AC Milan, whilst verteran 'Stopper Agustin Orion made the switch to Europe with Sparta Prague in a deal shy of $1m. Coming in saw the team spend $5m as Miguel Torren joined from Argentinos Jrs (later to be given the nickname El Carcinero from the fans), whilst nearly $4m was spent on 18 year old Jonathan Requena from Banfield as Boca looked to the future.

Onto the action then and the first big surprise came in as the lineups were announced for the opening fixture at Velez. 18 year old Keeper Matias Budino would get the nod in between the posts. Even more of a shock came when Budino himself would score the 2nd of Boca's 2 goals in a 5-2 reversal at Velez, as 'El Jugador' was born with the teenage sensation becoming the latest in the line of South American keepers responsible for their teams Free Kicks and Penalties.

'El Jugador' would prove to impact Boca both at the front and back!

Boca had to respond immediately to that humiliation and 'El Jugador would again strike, this time from the spot as Boca got back on track with a 3-1 win at home to Quilmes. 10pts were then picked up from the next 4 games as Gonzalo Castellani stood out as as main man, notching 3 goals, including a late winner as Boca overcame Racing Club in a 7 goal thriller.

Disappointment was mixed in with that run however as Boca fell at the Preliminary stage of the Copa Sudamericana. The draw pitted them with arch rivals River Plate ensuring an early taste of the Superclásico for Pianchi, and although the opening spat saw Boca win 4-2 at home to River, the 2 late goals conceded in that tie would prove crucial as River would exact revenge with a 2-0 win at the Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti and progress on the away goals rule.

Action returned swiftly to domestic matters and Defensa Y Justicia found themselves on the wrong end of a pair of hammerings as a 5-3 league win, was followed up by a 7-1 trouncing of the minnows as Boca embarked on their Copa Argentina journey with Martinez scoring a hat trick. Belgrano were turned over as Boca continued to harass Velez at the top of the table, before a shock 2-1 loss at upstarts Atl. Rafaela gave the Sarsfield club the advantage once more.

Winning ways soon came back to the Xeneizes, as Castellani and Martinez continued to pepper the score-sheet as Boca run up heavy scores against Arsenal de Sarandi and Olimpo, whilst El Jugador added his 5th goal of the season with a sublime free kick in the win over Lanus.

Progress continued to be made in the Copa as Chacarita Jrs succumbed 2-1 to a weakened Boca lineup, but then 1pt from 6 in the next 2 league games raised doubts as to whether Boca could usurp Velez at the top, as a loss at Independiente, followed by dropping a 2 goal lead at home to Newell's Old Boys looked to prove costly.

Torren or 'El Carnicero' as he become known to the Xeneizes

At this point Miguel Torren or 'El Carnicero' as he became known would prove to be a talking point, as his lack of discipline and interest in the 'rougher side' of the game proved costly, however for all his dirty traits, his solitary sending off came in that Newell's game, as referees often fell blind to his gamesmanship.

Boca had 4 games left and effectively needed to win them all to take the title, Godoy Cruz were easily notched 4-2 at home, before Boca exacted the ultimate revenge over River Plate with a 2-0 win on their turf, combined with a Velez slip put Boca on top of the table with just 2 to play. Defending Champions San Lorenzo were next but Martinez again score a deuce as another 2-0 win on the road put the title firmly in Boca's hands with just Tigre at home remaining on the final weekend.

Martinez shines and ends up with almost a goal a game, as his value soars after a fantastic campaign

Before that though a Copa Argentina Semi Final was due and the luck of the 'cup draw' had pitched Boca and River together again in the 4th Superclásico of the season. Boca would run riot, they would go 4 up before River responded and then continued to show no mercy on their rival by smashing home 6 of the best in a 6-2 romp that sparked scenes of violence in the River end. Boca would face Velez in the Final, as going into the final weekend of the League season, both teams still harbored ambitions of a domestic double!

Boca had the upperhand in the League though and with Tigre coming to La Bombonera it would take a miracle for them to tear the title from the hands of the Xeneizes. Once again 2 first half goals would prove to be the key to open the floodgates as Boca went nap with on loan Fuenzalida scoring a triple as Tigre were bounced 5-1 and the Torneo de Transición crown would once again find its way to Boca.

Celebrations break out amongst the Boca fans, as they once again are the best in Argentina

The season would be wrapped up with 2 more games against Velez. First up the Copa Argentina Final would end in disappointment as although Carrizo gave Boca the early lead, Velez would battle back and recover from missing out on the title by winning 2-1. The teams would then meet again just a week later to finish the season with a Supercopa clash, this time Boca made no mistake after striking early and go on to edge out Velez 4-2 to claim their 2nd honour of the season and spark more celebrations amongst the Boca faithful.

Club Atlético Boca Juniors

Season 2015 Review (1st Half):

A big year ahead for Boca, not only did they have to look forward to defending their Title in the new look Primera Division, but also another shot at the Copa Libertadores was on offer in the first half of the year.

Off the field, financially the club had been a success but more importantly elections were due to decide a new Chairman and way forward for the club. Current incumbent Daniel Angelici would stand again with the elections due for the end of 2015.

Preparations for the new season came round quick and immediately Boca and Pianchi made it clear that this year they were going all in to win the Copa Libertadores. As such a whirlwind few weeks in the transfer market ensued with the club spending just shy of $40m (a net spend of $30m). The most exciting capture was that of Lucas Romero from Velez Sarsfield, the dynamic young midfielder had a release clause in that when activated allowed Boca to enter negotiations with the player when bidding $15.5m.

Boca met the fee and although Romero hesitated as he had hoped for a move to Europe, he agreed a hefty contract with Boca, on the guarantee that he could leave to join a European team if a release fee was met. Other signings included bringing back Ezequiel Munoz from Palermo to strengthen the teams defence, whilst experienced Gabriel Hauche was snapped up from financially stricken Racing Club for a mere $4m.

Promising youngsters in Ponce and Cardozo completed the teams acquisitions as the 5 faces gave Boca a younger look to their squad. On the way out of the club was Juan Manuel Martinez, who had impressed in his spell since signing from Corinthians, however PSV Eindhoven were too much of a draw for Martinez and he left for an ininitial $4.5m fee.

With everything in place, the long grueling season could begin and Boca would immediately find out how tough things were going to be. The opening fixtures in the league saw them pick up just 1pt from 6 as a draw at Racing, followed up by a defeat at home to Rosario Central left many wondering if the new young looking Boca side had the steel about them to compete in so many competitions.

The Copa Libertadores group draw would be kind to the team, but success in the league was still wanting as the team would only pick up 4 more points in their next 3 fixtures with defeat at Velez a kick in the teeth. With the team struggling a shining light came out in the form of Luciano Acosta, given the name 'pequeño milagro' for his diminutive size and style, Acosta would start to score and create on a regular basis.

Luciano 'pequeño milagro' Acosta came alive for Boca this season, interesting many parties from Europe

Misery in the league would translate to joy on the continent as the team would start collecting group wins with ease, as Olimpia (PAR), Inti Gas (PER) and Universidad Catolica (CHI) would all face the wrath of the Boca attack with Acosta notching 4 of the teams 5 in a win over Inti Gas, before scoring a domestic hat-trick as the team romped to a 8-1 win at All Boys.

With the goals flowing and the teams easing through their group in the Copa Libertadores, a sudden bump to earth would come in a humiliating 7-3 reversal at Defensa Y Justicia, immediately followed up by a loss 2-1 to San Martin and a slump into mid table. Mexicans Tigre would then be Boca's next victum in the Copa' as the knockout stage began with a comfortable win.

Bocas league campaign before a 3 month break would end in disaster as River Plate would win the Superclasico at El Monumental 3-0 leaving many wondering if Pianchi had lost control of his team due to the dismal effort shown in domestic games. Even more would question his leadership when Vitoria would beat Boca 2-0 in Brazil, as the first leg of the Quarter Finals of the Copa Libertadores couldnt have gotten off to a worse start.

The return in Argentina would prove dramatic, Boca would go 3 up, Vitoria would pull one back and then in the final minute with Extra time looming, Carrizo raced through and slid home the 4th for Boca to clinch a dramatic aggregate win and setup the unthinkable 'Superclasico' Semi Final in South America's premiere competition.

The Semi Final of dreams; Superclasico and a chance for the ultimate victory

Having just lost to River and with River looking good in the Top 3 of the Primera Division, Boca entered the game as underdogs, but with the first leg away from home, they knew any sort of decent result would leave them with a chance back home in front of Los Xenezies. It would prove to be more than decent, Castellani netted first and then Colazo struck early in the 2nd half as Boca would bring home a 2-1 lead from the leg.

Back at La Bombonera Boca would score first again as Colazo helped himself to another, River equalised but as they pressed an to tie things up, an unlikely source would prove to be the Boca hero as subsitute defender Lisandro Magallan headed home to wrap up another 2-1 win and a 4-2 aggregate scoreline. Boca would have a chance to win the Copa Libertadores once again, their first since 2007.

Coming Home?

The final would see Boca face off against surprise side Santos Laguna from Mexico. The Mexicans looking to make history would struggle in the first leg as they snatched a late consolation at home to lose just 2-1 to a dominant Boca. The 2nd leg however proved to be more dramatic, Boca would go 2 up on the night an 4-1 on aggregate seemingly on their way to a 7th title in the Copa', however the Mexicans upped their game and 3 goals would stun the rabid home fans and force extra time.

Nothign was giving in the extra session until the 118th minute, when Castellani found himself in space, a sharp turn gave him the angle on the Santos 'keeper and his left foot shot soared into the back of the net, sparking huge celebrations, with the fans swathing down the stands to cheer their new hero. Boca and Pianchi had achieved their dream, the Libertadores was back in their hands and although there was still plenty to play for, heads immediately looked towards the showcase FIFA World Club Cup in December for Boca to really stamp their authority on the game on a global basis.

Club Atlético Boca Juniors

Season 2015 Review (2nd Half):

With the Copa Libertadores in the bag, Boca came back in August with the determination to catch Estudiantes (LP) and claim an unprecedented double. Initially success in the league saw the team collect some important points as Mati 'El Jugador' Budino won his place back in the team and started to find himself on the scoresheet once again.

The good results would be tempered by a crushing exit in the Copa Sudamericana Preliminary Round once again, this time Velez would win 6-2 at home, to seal a 6-4 aggregate win over a Boca team tiring from the early season exertions. Cup fortunes would be ignited in the Copa Argentina however, with a 5-0 win over Ferro, then a 2 goal win over Racing putting Boca into the Quarter Finals.

Gonzalo Castellani continues to endear himself to the Boca faithful

Unfortunately league form would become patchy once again and although a glut of wins would push Boca into the Top 5, defeats at home to the La Plata sides of Estudiantes and Gimnasia would all but rule Boca out of a late entrance into the title race. Boca would advance to the Copa Argentina Semi's with ease over Boca Unidos, but further defeats in the league to relegation threatened Olimpo and Guarani Antonio Franco would ensure that Boca would finish no higher than 5th.

In the Copa Argentina, Boca would once again face River Plate in the Semi Final. This time the teams tied 2-2 and River would exact a modicum of revenge by winning the resulting penalty shootout. The Copa would once again elude Boca Juniors.

Then with the FIFA World Club Cup on the horizon, Boca would play 3 further games in a end of season playoff for the sides 2nd-5th in the Primera Division. A win at River would be the highlight, however Velez would top the group with Boca 2nd as they failed to win any further games.

FIFA World Club Cup; Can Boca top the World in Canada?

The big one came next as Boca's long season would come to a dramatic finale with the FIFA World Club Cup in Canada. Boca would cruise through their Semi Final matchup with Iranian side Persepolis as the team shared around the goals in a 5-1 rout. This would setup a finale with Oil Rich PSG from France and current European Champions. The game was expected to be close and even have PSG as favourites, however Boca tore up any notion that they would be a pushover and would score 4 goals before half time en route to another 5-1 win and the clinching of the FIFA World Club Cup for the first time in its current iteration.

A draining season had come to a fantastic close; success was found on the Continent in the form of the Copa Libertadores and then Globally by winning the FIFA World Club Cup. Challenges still remain and now with the big lclubs in Europe interested in what talent Boca currently possesses, a new look may once again done the famous Blue of Boca in 2016.

Daniel Angelici returns for another term; he will look to continue his work with Pianchi and add more trophies to the decorated cabinet

Off the field, matters would be resolved in the Elections as Daniel Angelici would win another term in charge and immediately he sanctioned the expansion of La Bombonera by another 12000 seats to help Boca achieve their aims commercially down the road.

Club Atlético Boca Juniors

Season 2016 Review (1st Half):

After reaching the pinnacle of South American football last year, Pianchi knew that this year would be harder to maintain expectations. The first problem that he and Boca faced would be keeping the team together, as with success the European clubs came looking and an exodus began.

El Carnicero would shock the Boca fans by moving to Velez in a $5.5m deal as he wanted to be part of somethign more important, whilst full back Emanuel Insua left for Turkey and Fenerbahce in a deal that met his release clause. Young striker Ponce who had not long signed for the club also had his head turned and signed for Sevilla in a deal that will breach $10m before its out.

Pizzini who top the scoring charts on loan at Defensa Y Justicia, will hope to make the most of his big move to Boca

Then just as Boca hoped to get settled, they saw deals made for Ezequiel Munoz and Lucas Romero in packages that will top $40m in total, as they would join Benfica and Lazio respectively come June. The heart had been ripped out of the Boca, so the task of replacing them was set and in came 3 notable players from Independiente as Pizzini and Mancuello would be the headline signings. Replacing Insua would be Insua.. thats right Emiliano would return to the club from Atletico Madrid. Whilst another signing at the back in the form of Christian Lema would produce its own story.

The Captain of Independiente caused a storm by signing for Boca; but he now has a chance to win trophies and be the big player he can be

With the Copa Libertadores to defend and the Primera Division to try and win back, Boca would need a quick start to the campaign and they got just that, going 9 undefeated in the league, dropping just 4pts as notable wins over Velez and reigning Champions Estudiantes put Boca top of the pile.

The defence of the Libertadores also started well with all 3 opening group games won, as El Nacional, Libertad and Tolima were unable to keep pace with Boca. However a defeat in the return fixture at Tolima would be Boca's first of the season in all competitions and just a week later, All Boys would stun Boca 4-2 and end the teams undefeated league record.

Humiliation on a grand scale!

Qualification for the last 16 in the Libertadores was soon sealed and after coming through 7-3 on agg over Union Espanola, Boca would hit arguably the darkest moment of their history. Firstly the Superclasico at El Monumental would prove to be a horror show for Boca. River would run riot and not show mercy on their rivals, blitzing in 8 goals without reply as Boca were humiliated.

Things would go from bad to worse as Velez would then hammer 5 past Boca in the 2nd Leg of their Libertadores Quarter Final to end all hope of Boca retaining their continental crown. Progress was made in the Copa Argentina as Tigre were smashed for 6 before the break in the season, but Boca would wave goodbye to Munoz and Romero before returning to try and salvage something from their season.

Club Atlético Boca Juniors

Season 2016 Review (2ndHalf):

Boca still had title ambitions going into the 2nd part of the season and successive wins over Banfield and Racing would keep them in touch in a 3-horse race alongside River and San Lorenzo. Elsewhere Newell's would be overcome in the Sudamericana Preliminary round, whilst disappointment would arrive in the form of a resounding loss to Vasco in the Recopa.

Back to back league defeats against Newell's and Atlanta would hamper Boca's surge, before a 7 game win streak put them right back in the mix, including a crucial 5-3 win over San Lorenzo that saw El Jugador score a pair as he would once again reach double digits for the campaign.

Boca fans flock to La Bombonera and over 60000 attend the win against San Lorenzo

In the cups, Boca would beat Cienciano comfortably in the Sudamericana before succumbing to Fluminense in the Quarter Final, however the run in the Copa Argentina continued and the goals flowed with 4 against Quilmes and 5 vs Godoy Cruz taking them into the Semi Finals.

With 3 games remaining in the league Boca knew that winning all 3 would be their only chance to overcome the gap to San Lorenzo. Unbelievably a trip to unfashionable Sp. Belgrano would end up with Boca on the wrong end of 4 goals. It handed the title to San Lorenzo and even though Boca would win their 2 remaining games, there was little they could do but settle for 2nd place.

Every trophy is important and the Copa Argentina is becoming a staple diet in Argentinian football

In the Copa, a crushing win over Rosario would setup a Final with San Lorenzo and another double by El Jugador (who could have had a hat trick) would help Boca gain a modicum of revenge in a 3-2 win. Boca ensured their Libertadores qualification with this win and although San Lorenzo would end the season by winning the Supercopa against Boca, Pianchi and Los Xenezies had some silverware to celebrate.

The end of season playoffs to decide who would get a Libertadores place mattered little to Boca and their only highlight being a 3-2 win at River, as Boca also claimed a place in the Sudamericana for 2017.

Club Atlético Boca Juniors

Season 2017 Review (1st Half):

After missing out on all fronts bar the Copa Argentina last time out, Pianchi managed to convince the Boca directors to open up their finances and allow him to spend a portion of the $70m + raised last season via selling players. The rebuild was agreed upon and Boca would enter the transfer market with an agressive strategy that would see them have a net spend just shy of $30m.

The plan was to put together a squad with more depth to enable Boca to cope with the exertions of the long league campaign as well as the Libertadores and potentially a run in the Sudamericana in the 2nd half of the season. With that in mind, Boca would bring in the better talent from within the Primera Division as over $16m was sent to Velez for Asad and Noguera, whilst $5m saw Boca sign Tevez from Newell's (not Carlitos... but still...). Finally and arguably the biggest signing would be to bring Allione back to Argentine football as with Palmeiras relegated to Serie B in Brazil, Allione would be available for a relatively cheap $6.5m.

Allione would prove to be a master stroke addition to the Boca squad

Matters on the pitch clicked instantly for Boca, 4 straight wins to open the league campaign boded well as the goals flowed with Huracan being hit for 4 and Lanus 6 as Pizzini found his scoring boots early. A tough Copa Libertadores Group draw would see Boca lose for the first time this season with Cerro Porteno coming out on top 2-0 in Paraguay, as Boca would find it tough in a group that also included Gremio and America (MEX).

Back to back draws saw Boca stutter a little and give Estudiantes a chance to close in at the top, however Boca continued to remain undefeated as a 4-3 home win over Estudiantes would cement Boca's place in the table, whils Douglas Haig would be another team on the end of 6 of the best from Boca. In the Libertadores, Boca would win and draw against each of Gremio and America, leaving them needing a result in the final game at home to Cerro Porteno. Fortunately the Paraguayans dont travel to well and Boca would come out on top comfortably with Allione nabbing a brace.

With the 1st half of the Primera Division coming to a close, Boca would remain undefeated, winning 4 games on the spin, the last being a 2-1 home squeaker in the Superclasico as River would throw away a first half lead. The remainder of Boca's concentration would be on the Libertadores, with Chilean 'cracks Colo Colo their opponent in the last 16.

A close 2-1 win in Chile set Boca up for the return and although Colo Colo did score, 3 more from Boca would seal a 5-2agg win. The Quarter Finals would throw up a surprise as tiny Brazilian outfit Chapecoense navigated their way into the last 8. Once there however they were no match for the mighty Boca and a 5-0 thumping at La Bombonera would put paid to their chances of progressing, albeit they would salvage pride in the return by winning against a weakened Boca 2-1.

Boca fans needed revenge after taking the 8-0 humbling to the hands of River last season

Into the Semi Final and for the 2nd time in 3 years it would be a Superclasico with Boca facing off against River. The first leg at La Bombonera would see 10-men Boca survive a River onslaught to hang on to a 2-1 win thanks to a double from Acosta. The 2nd leg in El Monumental would be a classic in every sense of the word as Boca would lead on the night 2-0 and 3-1 before half time.

With River desperate they poured forward and although they scored a 2nd, Boca would add a 4th thanks to Acosta once more and all but secure their place in the Final. However River continued relentlessly to assault the Boca backline and when Teofilo Gutierrez added Rivers 3rd, they knew 2 more goals in the final 20 minutes would force Extra time. Boca resisted gallantly but in the final minutes Adrian Ramos would score to make it 4-4 on the night. River piled forward in the final moments to try and sneak it, but Boca bravely hung on and edged out River once again to make it to the Libertadores Final.

The old enemy collide at club level; Boca and Gremio square off for the biggest prize in the Continent

Once there, Boca would face Gremio again. This time the teams shared 4 goals in Brazil as Boca would come out with the edge going back home for the 2nd leg. In Argentina, Boca would go 2 goals up and seemingly be cruising to the win with Pizzini bagging both. However Cristian 'El Verdugo' Lema would senselessly be sent off and let Gremio back into the tie, something they grabbed with both hands as they would tie the game on the night and on aggregate with time running out.

Boca though would not be denied and with La Bombonera bouncing, Pizzini found himself with half a yard of space and would score to complete a stunning hat trick and ensure that the Copa Libertadores would find itself back in the hands of Boca after a years absence.

Season 2017 Review (2nd Half):

With the Libertadores in the bag, Boca had to focus on trying to reclaim their domestic crown. Once again the Copa Sudamericana would be a distraction, as would the Copa Argentina. Whilst the icing on the cake would be another crack at the FIFA World Cup in December with Boca hoping to once again top the world at the expense of the European Champions.

Boca's form would carry over the break in fixtures, as they instantly chalked up 5 more straight league wins as the goals kept flowing, Rosario and Velez both saw 4, whilst Independiente were hit for 5 in their own backyard. Boca would also progress in the Copa and Sudamericana as Olimpo would be dispatched in the former, whilst Rosario and Cobreloa would be victims in the latter as Boca would reach the Quarter Finals of both competitions.

In the league Boca remained undefeated but Estudiantes kept pace with them, just 3 points behind in due to that defeat to Boca earlier in the season. With neither side looking like dropping points, Boca had to keep winning and this they would do as Atl. Rafaela, Godoy Cruz and then San Lorenzo would all be hammered as Boca marched on behind the goals of Francisco Pizzini.

Progress to the Copa Argentina Semi Finals would come about with a mullering of Defensa Y Justicia and then with Estudiantes blinking, Boca's 7 goal romp over Patronato would be enough to ensure the title would return to La Bombonera after a 2 year absence and for the first time in the new format.

Coming Home! Boca go undefeated en route to winning the Primera

With the Primera Division sown up, thoughts turned to completing a clean sweep of titles as Boca would dump out holders Velez Sarsfield in the Sudamericana Quarter Finals 10-7 on aggregate in 2 of the greatest ties to be played in the competition. Into the Semi Finals and it would be another all-Argentine clash as Estudiantes awaited a slice of revenge for missing out on the Primera crown. They would get that as a 4-3 win in the opening leg would be enough, thanks to a hard fought 1-1 draw at La Bombonera.

The 'Double' is sewn up with a romp against Independiente as Pizzini makes his former club pay

Boca would make up for that disappointment in the Copa Argentina as easy wins over Velez and then Independiente in the Final would ensure a domestic double and retaining of the Copa. There would be no such celebration in the FIFA World Club Cup though, as although Boca would thrill the fans with a 4-3 win over Mexicans 'Atlas, they had no answer to Bayern and Thomas Mueller as they would succumb 3-1 in the Final.

Last up in a long season would be a chance to win the Supercopa, however once more Estudiantes would usurp Boca's chance, going 4 up, before allowing Boca to make a game of it at 4-3, to win a piece of silverware. However it has been Boca's year; the Primera Divison back in the bag, coupled with a domestic double thanks to a Copa Argentina triumph, whilst also adding the Copa Libertadores to their glittering cabinet. Boca would go undefeated in the league, whilst losing just 5 of 60 games played in 2017....expectations have just gone up a notch!

Club Atlético Boca Juniors

Season 2018 Review (1st Half):

The problem with success as Boca have seen before is that success brings interest. For Boca that means their invincible team of 2017 would soon be peppered by offers from Europe and the inevitable breakup of one of the clubs greatest squads was soon to happen.

Pianchi would obviously try to resist the wholesale changes, but once AC Milan made it clear that they would get Agustin Allione, it was just a matter of time before the squad disintegrated. Allione would go for a healthy profit in a $17.5m deal to Serie A, soon followed by Leandro Marin who would swap Argentina for Mexico and America (MEX) for $11m. Next up would be the one that hurt the most, Luciano Acosta had been coveted for a while now and Pianchi had promised to allow him to leave should his fee be met. Various clubs took that opportunity, however it was a surprise to see Acosta go to Galatasaray for $17m.

Noguera has the potential to be a World Class defender and will shine for Napoli after his big money move

Emiliano Insua would be on his way back to Portugal as Sporting coughed up over $7m for his signature, whilst finally Fabian Noguera who impressed in his solitary season in the Boca colours would go to Napoli in another $17m deal. Overall Boca would raise $75m in transfer fee's, Pianchi would replace them on a budget and with just $14m being spent to rebuild the squad, along with a clutch of youth players called up, the latest transition in Boca's history was on its way.

Boca would almost immediately find things tough, as they would lose for the first time in the league for over 30 games going down 1-0 to Colon in week 2. A quick recovery saw Boca get back on track with 6 straight league wins, as well as fly through their Copa Libertadores group fixtures, dropping just 2pts in a home draw with Sao Paulo, as they would gain qualification thanks to wins over Leon de Huanuco and Alianza Petrolera respectively.

However that would be the best it got, a stuttering cup win over Godoy Cruz on penalties would be a sign that all wasn't rosy in Boca's garden. Back to back league defeats to Sp. Belgrano and then a curmbling 5-2 loss to Estudiantes bought the reality of the situation home to Pianchi. Infact Boca would collect just 4 more points from 5 games before the break, as further defeats to San Lorenzo, Gimnasisa (Jujuy) and then at home in the Superclasico 2-0 to River would leave Boca ensconced in 9th place and off the pace.

nacinoal_zps532ab17e.jpg

Boca would survive in Colombia; but it wasnt enough... As El Verde caused the upset!

If that was disappointing, the loss to Atletico Nacional of Colombia in the Copa Libertadores would be worse. A 2-2 draw in Medellin appeared to be enough for Boca to progress, however Nacional would cruise through at La Bombonera with a 2 goal win and a 4-2agg beating of the defending Champions. Boca's season was in tatters, the Copa Argentina remained on the horizon, as well as another shot in the Copa Sudamericana... but they were shy of coming close in either of the 'Major' honours and Pianchi would need to find answers... quick...

Club Atlético Boca Juniors

Season 2018 Review (2nd Half):

Pianchi had learned alot about his team during their struggles in the opening half of the season and as such Boca would come out with a different look domestically when they returned from the mid-season break. Results on the continent would continue to disappoint as Rosario crushed Boca out of the Sudamericana early on, whilst Bahia would ensure Boca would miss out on the Recopa once more, however in the Primera, Boca had things tuned in.

They would start by smashing Union 5-0 and that would spark a winning streak of 7 games in the league, as the goals started to flow again, most notably in the 7-2 destruction of All Boys. That winning run put Boca right back in the mix alongside Estudiantes, Newell's and Velez as neither of the 4 teams really stretched away from the pack.

Campeon!

Continued success in the Copa Argentina went alongside the league form, however a 1-1 draw at home to Rosario would not stop Boca, infact that would be the only points they dropped in the second half of the campaign as 6 straight wins to finish the season, including a 1-0 win at home to Velez on the final day to clinch the title, gave Pianchi and Boca an unlikely title after such a poor start.

Add the Supercopa to the growing list of Pianchi achievements with Azul y Oro!

Velez would get some revenge by winning in the Copa Semi Final, but it was Boca who on the back of a rebuild in pre-season that once again ruled Argentina, their 3rd title in 5 years and a reminder to never rule out the Azul y Oro. Wrapping up the season Boca would face Rosario in the Supercopa, with Boca claiming a 2nd piece of silverware with a 2-0 win to the delight of those who kept faith with what Pianchi hoped to achieve with his new look lineup.

Thats that then.

Been screwed by the Copa Libertadores bug... its not scheduling anymore from this season... pretty much ruins the point of the game tbh :(

Sorry about that, one of the best saves ive enjoyed in a long while tbh

Feel free to delete the thread if its clogging up the boards :(

That sucks, this was a ton of fun, following Pianchi and his team :) you're an awesome writer by the way. Amazing how much cash they gave you to spend though, that's absolutely not at all realistic with Argentinian teams.

Thanks mate, i think i will come back to Boca as it has been loads of fun :)

With regards the cash, I think it was 2-fold... 1st I didnt know but there is a bug with their Season Ticket sales that gave them 10x the amount they should have had... and 2nd, I managed to make alot via sales, which obviously rather than cater to debt, was then given to me as the Season Ticket money was servicing the other areas.

Still it was tough to manage at times, Pizzini for example had just walked away on a free transfer and I had called up a few more youngsters, plus nearly every player would ask for a move once some interest came their way... which I felt realistic and challenging as I couldnt just stack an amazing squad for year on year, more like build one each time.

Thanks again for the comments :)

I love Boca, I grew up following them on every chance I had, grew up 500 km from Buenos Aires.... Anyhow, I'm also playing with Boca and was very interesting to follow your career as I made similar moves. Lucas Romero has been amazing for me the second season. My first season I won the league by a point on an unbelievable collapse by River and Estudiantes, also won Copa Argentina, but lost both games in the Copa Sudamericana. Sold a couple of high profile youth and bought Peruzzi and Forlin on the agreed fees, however, not sure why the transfer scheduled for July 2015... As I said, I bought Romero and a young GK, been doing just ok in the league on my second season, but I just destroyed Argentinos Jrs. 9-0! I think it's the breakthrough win the team needed, happened as I changed my tactic and formation completely from a 442 diamond possession, short pass to a 4231 fast counter.

I can't wait for Peruzzi, Forlin and Mannama all coming in July. I may have to sell Gago, but my club gave me 30 mill at the end of the first season... It has to be a bug.
