Tactic Familiarity problems, please help

Recommended Posts

You don't have to be perfectly familiar at the start of the season, but sometime before the end of september would be nice. The number of pre-season friendlies you have to play in order to get somewhat familiar is very unrealistic anyway. I dare say there are very few teams that do that amount of friendlies irl. I also find it very unrealistic the extent of which players "forget" what formation and tactical instructions they played with only 2 months ago ... New players coming into a club with a different approach than what they're used to - sure, but players that played for the same club and the same manager and (broadly) the same tactics last season and a couple of seasons before that? Nah.

Team tactical familiarity should be done away with, really, and replaced by familiarity on an individual basis. The team collective familiarity would then be the sum of all individual player's.

That could be how it is implemented already. After all, familiarity goes down with each new signing. Each player has a way of playing that they are used to - "Player X is used to closing down a lot more than he is being asked". There's some evidence to suggest that the familiarity is based on individual familiarity already.

If it is, it is done in a very crude and rudimentary fashion. I bet you if you did this experiment: Manage 2 teams, play with exactly the same tactical setup in both teams. Then, next season, swap all of the players in the 2 clubs. Lo and behold, suddenly the players have become totaly unfamiliar with all aspects of tactics, even though they're the same as they played last season.

Not to mention that if you don't get any new players at all in between 2 seasons, and haven't changed anything in tactics, the players still have forgotten much of how they played last season.

This aspect of FM needs to be refined.

Even withing the squad... E.g. assume 22 players, each position covered twice. One selection plays 4231 attacking with the wide players as inside forwards en fullbacks pushing up. Selection 1 plays all there matches exclusively in this formation. The other 11 players, selection 2 plays counter 4231 with wode players as defensive wingers. Now will the individueal wide players be familiar with both wide playe roles? If you were to switch tactics for selection 1 & 2 would familiarity suddenly drop? I doubt it.

In another mind experiment: Lert's say we have one tactic and use it for 6 months, no shouts tweaks whatsoever during matches or in between matches. Everything will be very fluid. Now, if tweak a W9a) to an IF (s), will the familiarity for the entire team drop or just for one player? And what effect will it have on the pitch? The limited left back would not have to adopt a whole lot in his play if the right winger is asked to cut inside a bit more you'd suspect.
