Basking in the Sunshine

The streets were bare, no people, no parties, nothing. There were empty beer cans, decorative flags, confetti everywhere. The celebrations had lasted almost 24 hours. It had been a great day for the people of the town, one that they would never forget. They had waited for so many years, and now it had happened, they just didn't know what to make of it. It had turned the town into a party atmosphere. Life would never be the same again...

James Holt stepped off the plane at Brussels airport, the hot air immediately hitting him in the face. He suddenly realised that his jeans and thin jumper was inappropriate clothing for the weather, and hurried into the toilet to change into shorts and shirt. He would normally wear a suit and tie for the first day of a new job, but when it was the heat of a Belgian summer time, he felt sure that his new boss would understand. It was a massive opportunity for him, and though he wasn't the most experienced or well known manager in the world game, after four successful years at Oostende, in which he had seen them promoted to the top flight for the first time in their history. The chairman of Anderlecht, Roger Vanden Stock, had contacted him just three weeks after he had secured the promotion, offering him the hotseat at the reigning champions. It was a huge opportunity, and one he never expected to get...however, it was also one he could not turn down.

...

He woke up, the sweat pouring off him. That image again. Though his flashbacks arent as regular, he still fears them. He can still picture that fateful image, one that haunts him regularly. It was all part of the game, a tackle, a 50-50 ball...nothing could have prepared him for what he witnessed. As he went in, he heard a snap, then another one. It was a horrible sound, but nothing worse than the screams. The agonizing screams. As he got up, he saw him holding his left leg...well, what was left of it. He went white, felt sick. He couldn't hold his breakfast down

It had been such a serious injury that he never played again. It was an image that will forever be etched in his memory, and that nagging feeling that he ended another mans career. Yes, it was inadvertent, but it still happened...

Walking through Stade Constant Vanden Stock, the atmosphere of the place just oozed out. The history, the pictures on the walls. It just made him want to get straight down to business. Once he had completed all the formalities, met with his coaching staff, the press and the office staff, he felt it was time to grab his assistant, Franky Vercauteren, and get down to discussing the squad.

"Franky, good to see you"

He sat down, files in his hand, and spread them over the desk. It was clear that he was a man who liked to be organised, liked to be prepared, and that would help them both.

"Where would you like to start?"

"Well, the main players. There's several good, solid players in the squad, and it gives us a decent base for the season. Michel Zewlakow is one, he can play anywhere across the defence or midfield. Walter Baseggio, a central midfielder, is also a good player. Then there's Christian Wilhelmsson, a winger who can play on either side, and Nenad Jestrovic, a striker with a decent scoring record. These players could really help us this season"

"OK. Anyone else?"

He pulled some more files out, not as thick as the first, but still plenty in them

"These are some of the youngsters, in particular the ones who I think are capable of stepping up to the plate. The first is Vincent Kompany. He's a central defender, also capable of playing the holding role. Strong, quick and brilliant in the air. The other is also a defender, and he is one that I think can be a major star. Anthony Vanden Borre is your classic full back, loves to bomb forward but never shirks his defensive duties. Both can quite easily fill spots in the first team this season"

It was obvious that his assistant knew what he was talking about. With the players due to report back the next day, he decided enough was enough and that both men needed to get some rest, ready for the pre-season campaign to begin...

The players returned the next day, and were immediately thrust into a strict fitness regime. They spent the first week getting their fitness levels up to scratch, and though it was tough, was hard, they got on with it. However, when they finally got the balls out to practice their on field activity, they were joined by a couple of new recruits, recruits that the manager had worked hard to get. The first was Leverkusen winger Daniel Bierofka. He cost £425,000, but it was a decent fee for a player who could play on either wing, could use either foot, could create and score goals. His side were keen to offload him, and James was quick to move and bring him in as part of the side. The second was a young striker from Germinal Beerschot, and that was Moussa Dembele. He was wanted by a whole host of clubs around the world, so to be able to secure the transfer and snap up such a talented young player was a real coup for the club.
